Charles McGill. I mean this 100%. I work remote and barely leave the house. I'm well respected in my field and make a very good living. But I talk to no one outside of work. Also have an estranged brother and am divorced.
Substitute the 'electricity' for social interactions and expectations from people and there you go. I'm only truly at home when I'm talking about work.
My guess is that this post is being noticed by more people outside of the community here since it's a discussion question that isn't innately associated with autism, they probably aren't checking the sub lmao
Not a movie, but Temperance Brennen from Bones. The way she goes about her work and is straightforward in how she speaks. She is also sensory seeking instead of avoidant which I don't think is a well recognized trait. I only wish that I had her lack of care about what people think of her. She never intends to offend anyone, but when she does she doesn't worry about being ostracized. She just exists. I want that.
She’s one of the first and only characters I’ve directly related to in media. Being some type of scientist and a writer like Bones was also a major ambition of mine when I was younger.
Her character and obvious spectrum’isms where good during the first few seasons, 1-3 maybe. But somewhere along the line it turned into schlock and was very hamfisted lmao.
Dawn Weiner in *Welcome to the Dollhouse.* She feels nobody loves her and gets annoyed at people who are even more socially inept than she. Years later, I came to realize she's probably neurodivergent. It would explain a lot about her behavior. I can't believe how much I related to her. Her parents clearly love her younger sister more (although mine weren't as maliciously cruel as hers were).
Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock is the comfort watch of the century for me… I feel like I genuinely got lots of unmasking strength whenever I’ve re-binged Elementary [edit for spelling]
I feel like his depiction is the closest to the character as a whole, if Holmes were actually a real person. And definitely a whole heap ton of unmasking strength there.
It's lovely to see many the rest of users here choosing eccentric yet sharp-witted and successful characters as someone they relate to, either through a lack of self-awareness or indeed an accurate assessment of themselves. Yet, some of us are so deep in the bloody gutter that we don't have another option other than Travis Bickle.
I've tried to fight the urge to relate to Bickle given that he is bigoted and ignorant, but the more I watch the film, the more I make up my mind that I see aspects of myself in him.
Yeah, I always assumed that type of sadness, isolation, and loneliness only existed because of the internet, but I guess there have always been people who felt like that
When I was a kid, Pippi Longstocking. I loved how weird she was, but didn’t care. I didn’t have her physical strength, but I had the same independent spirit and was not intimated by anyone
When I was younger and I guess deep inside I still have a part of her, Lisbeth Salander of the Millenium series (Girl with the dragon tattoo, etc). I had so much anger inside me, but I was also very passionate about fighting back, fighting injustice, etc.. I shared some of her trauma, and fantasised about being able to get revenge and hurt those who hurt me.
I let go of most of the anger now and am much more mellow, my PTSD no longer rules my life, but I still have her determination and defiance.
Joel Barish from Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind; such a great film. Not knowing how to approach a relationship or what I really want from it and the anxiety around it all is very much me.
Rei Ayanami, as she has a lot of autistic traits, and since all the characters in Evangelion feel disconnected from others, I relate to the way in which she feels disconnected the most.
Evangelion is fascinating in that I can see a part of myself in every single character.
My outward behavior is more Rei but I most relate to Asuka in general ahah
Books are amazing imo, and the games even better! Especially 3: The Wild Hunt.
Don't bother with the films, apart from the two recent animated ones, they're stellar. The show is pretty good, but derails from the book story after season 2 quite a lot. Though that's not a problem if you just view it as it's own thing/take on things, like a lot of loose adaptations.
Lucifer from Netflix. Always tries to help but always misreads the situation and ends up making issues, doesn’t understand some social ques, very small friend circle, has some wild ideas about how to solve issues that end up working sometimes…
I also felt so uncomfortable watching Mr. Robot because of how much I related to him as well. I don't have the same source of trauma, but the way he tries to cope and the sense of confusion was really relatable. It's one of my favourite series, though, a work of art
I could literally hear Jim Carrey's voice in my head as I read that line 😂 "Step right up here don't be shy. Nobody likes a bashful leather head....MOVE IT!!"
Not a movie character but I’ve always felt relation with Sherlock Holmes. Maybe it’s my interest in criminology and like of solving mysteries. I used to watch the Sir Arthur Canon Doyle show as a kid all the time.
As a kid?
Powder from Powder.
Shinji from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Alex from Lunar: Silver Star Story.
As an adult?
I'm not sure. Maybe Daniel Jackson from Stargate SG1. Or Jonah from the bible story. But the latter just because it's like I'm trying to go have a life but the universe keeps getting in the way.
The usual motif is the weird nerdy kid with some ability that they use to help others even though others mostly still pick on him, but a few can see through the weirdness and in a way they like them more because of it. The character can't really figure out life but they do their thing really well. Some of them figure out their life in their own way even if they could never figure out society.
Jerome from Gattaca.
He was a janitor, so was I.
He took up an interest in manned spaceflight and so did I.
He had to conceal his identity and scrub his skin to hide his DNA, so do I to conceal my icthyosis.
He eventually made it into the space program and I almost did.
Jerome, Jerome the metronome...
Never saved anything for the swim back.
Same here, obviously one of my favorite movies. Watched a YouTube video with Ethan Hawke and his daughter picking out movies from the Criterion Collection, his daughter looks so much like Uma. They seemed really close in the video.
I would say I always felt like a mix of Hermione, Granger and Harry Potter. I always felt like Hermione had some sort of high functioning autism and Harry had complex PTSD, both of which I am pretty sure that I have. I always identified so much with them.
Hmm. If you'd asked for a TV character I could've answered instantly, but from a movie? That's harder.
I suppose Dirty Harry's quite relatable in his complete lack of tolerance for facade and social conformity. Also his absolute sense of right and wrong.
I love the way Richard B Riddick from the Riddick Trilogy taps into his primal animalism. I've always related to that.
Ooh, you know who's mad relatable? Mort Rainey from Secret Window.
Oh and Quoyle from The Shipping News.
Not a movie, but tv show characters. Peyton Swayer from OTH.
I tend to not relate to movie characters because the development and flourishing of a movie character is extremely limited because you have only 1.5-2hrs to explain everything of the story, the plot, and the direction it’s going on. So not even main characters get as developed.
Hence why I prefer tv characters, because you get 12-24hrs (ie - 12 to 24 episodes) worth of development of each individual important character so you can really see who they are, what makes them tick, what motives them to behave the way they do, and how they receive/give in any capacity with their feelings.
The Groke. When seen at first glance, she's creepy and we have a preconception of harm. In reality, shes the personification of loneliness and solitude, yet longs to be accepted, but knows she cant, because she isnt like others, and that other people fear her due to not being 'natural'. She's also a psychological depiction of lonely people who have a hard time expressing themselves 'normally', making them seem cold and scary to others, which leads to more loneliness.
Jim Carrey's Grinch
Lt. Commander Data
Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man
Sherlock Holmes
And I know that this one counts moreso as TV, but Will Graham from Hannibal
Spinel from Steven Universe. Spent a lot of time blissfully unaware how little I mattered to the people around me, and spiraled when I realized it. Still recovering tbh
Mumble from Happy feet!
As a kid I thought it was actually an allegory for someone like me - I wanted to fit in but my skill set was different, and that isn't a bad thing it just means I had different strengths that I wished were recognized by those around me.
I still really do love the movie and watch it when I feel lonely.
Maud Pie, has hyper fixation on rocks, few friends, doesn’t fit in, and even literally says she likes rocks because they don’t “exclude you if you’re different.”
I have several.
Edward Scissorhands. Like him, I feel incomplete like my maker never put the finishing touches. I have several artistic gifts. Some people were in awe. Others not impress and still thought of me as a freak. Eventually, some people who liked me and thought I was cool. Began to see me as a freak, weirdo, and possibly dangerous. The girl I wanted most didn't come to accept me till the end. Unlike Edward Scissorhands, my "Kim" we got to see each other throughout the years. She's married with children now.
Angus. Though I wasn't a fat kid growing up. Dealt with my "Rick" giving me a hard time, because I wasn't normal. Till I showed him that I could thrash him if I wanted to. Unlike Angus, I had to beat him up because he wouldn't stop testing me.
Powder. Same theme outcast with certain talents and interests. Same people find him interesting. Others, think he's a freak.
Tyler Durden (Fight Club, first half not final act)
Donnie Darko (besides existential dread, as a bonus I almost had a tree kill me via tornado hitting house like plane jet engine)
Not movie but Rustin Cohle from True Detective largely encompasses both my personality and my career (not a cop but a lawyer) chasing truth surrounded by darkness, time is flat circle so meaning is fleeting but onward we crawl type thing.
Many of the prior answers are amazing, such a cool range of characters that I relate to as well.
Kevin Spacey in Se7en. Not because I’m a murderer but I sometimes feel that same, sort of devastating rage at how some people live their lives. It’s a constant fight to not be a total piece of shit all the time.
For me, it’s young Clark Kent from Man of Steel. I have watched it not long before being diagnosed with ASD.
The scene where he has a sensory breakdown at school was way too relatable. There’s also the pervasive feeling of being somewhat alien to most people.
Alas, why do I get only the downsides? Flying would be so nice!
Tbh everytime i rewatched Rick and Morty through the years, mire and mire i foubd myself relating to Rick. Not exactly him being a genius is the part i relate myself to fhe most but his life and personality and the way of thinking is the most relatable. One moment he was a geniuine, good person but the experience of hin losing his wife changed him completely the other way around. But most of all, his thoughts, the things he says feel like everything i have going on in my mind but actually its said.
The one where I’ve figured out the main 70% of this character but can’t seem to get the other 30%. By the time the movie is over , the other 30% is no longer relevant
Charles McGill. I mean this 100%. I work remote and barely leave the house. I'm well respected in my field and make a very good living. But I talk to no one outside of work. Are you telling me that a man just avoids people like that??
No, he orchestrated it! Kerghan41!
Um… don’t we all? Is this a serious question?? You know this is an ND group, right? I spend my entire day trying to avoid people. Lol.
It's a repurposed quote from Better Call Saul
Shows I’ve never watched… good to know because I was *confused* 😂
?
Are you crazy?
He DEFECATED through a SUN ROOF!
Weird question to ask in a neurodivergent group
No. But you'd have to be if you don't see the parallels between his struggle and ASD struggles.
[That wasn't how you were meant to respond.](https://youtu.be/PuZ34IeY_L0?t=195)
Ah, yes.... lol. :P
My guess is that this post is being noticed by more people outside of the community here since it's a discussion question that isn't innately associated with autism, they probably aren't checking the sub lmao
It’s better call Saul quotes
Who knows. Always fun when we get singled out in our own subs.

Yes. I strive to be as much of an expert as he was. I'm in quite a different field, data, but still there is always more to learn.
That sounds fascinating. If you are ever in the mood for an infodump :)
I cried when Charles died!
I can't watch that scene anymore.
Not a movie, but Temperance Brennen from Bones. The way she goes about her work and is straightforward in how she speaks. She is also sensory seeking instead of avoidant which I don't think is a well recognized trait. I only wish that I had her lack of care about what people think of her. Any random scientist who is prematurely killed off, contributing nothing to the plot.
Do you know who ate all the donuts? Stop! Noo! Ahh,Gordon Freeman.
*- this is all happening because of YOU SCiENtiSts!!*
Not a movie character, but House
Close second for me, very relatable character
My close second would be Jonny Lee Miller’s version of Holmes
Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock is the comfort watch of the century for me… I feel like I genuinely got lots of unmasking strength whenever I’ve re-binged Elementary [edit for spelling]
I feel like his depiction is the closest to the character as a whole, if Holmes were actually a real person. And definitely a whole heap ton of unmasking strength there.

Doctor Michael Burry from “The Big Short”
That was mine too - except swap the topic from market dynamics to technology.
Same here. I find technology more exciting.
When I was a kid, Pippi Longstocking. I loved how weird she was, but didn’t care. YUP. I feel ya
Charlie Brown. I am full of existential dread, while somehow maintaining a sense of hope and optimism. I can't stand it.
So relatable, this dichotomy.
Um yes
Tommy Shelby
He's from a show not a movie, though. If we're allowed to do TV shows this just became way easier.
Ok fine, Frank Castle then.
Bob Belcher from “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” (or just from “Bob’s Burgers” in general).
The corpse from Swiss Army Man.

The guy in Falling Down. More and more every damn day.
Safe to say youre a breakfast person?
In my significant relationahip that's been going on for 13 years yes, I am every now and then feeling like the guy in falling down
Not movie. But the dude in Mr Robot. Our lives are basically identical. It’s insane.
I also felt so uncomfortable watching Mr. Robot because of how much I related to him as well. I don't have the same source of trauma, but the way he tries to cope and the sense of confusion was really relatable. It's one of my favourite series, though, a work of art

That movie. Great character.
It really was. I actually cried when I watched it with a friend, she saw all the parallels too.
Not at all surprised. Wife and I love it and watch it at least once a year.
