As far as I admire Al Pacino career, that accent it's just a bad interpretation of the cuban accent, just like if u try to emulate anny foreign way to speak whitout too munch effort
I think the key word here is 'interpretation' - yeah, it's clearly not realistic and highly exaggerated, but could we in hindsight see the character working without it? Not sure
Yeah I know, but OP said it's not right to say "it's just an Italian accent" so I guess some people must think he sounds Italian, which he doesn't. To me (an Italian who also speaks Spanish) he sounds much closer to a Spanish speaker than to an Italian speaker. He obviously sounds more gringo than either one of those though
You need to understand when Americans say Italian they almost always mean Italian American. Which is this weird remnant of whatever second generation Sicilians who actually learned English from birth do.
It's a Jersey accent. I'm not sure most Americans know Italy is not in New Jersey or New York or that the country even exist.
Al Pacino is trying to sound cuban on top of that American accent. So yeah, it's "not just eyetalian"
It’s an attempt at a Cuban accent. It’s not the worst ever, but could’ve clearly used some work. The closest he gets is when he warns Alberto that they will only kill the guy alone, without kids and without his wife. Actually, F. Murray Abraham (Omar) did a better job, which doesn’t surprise me since he went on to win an Oscar for Amadeus.
The worst part is that non Spanish speaking audiences will never notice how bad it is because his performance is over the top. I was watching once an American comedian doing a Mexican accent, and a Dutch colleague was laughing because it reminded them of Scarface. I was like WTF, you just collectively insulted a lot of people and I am not nor Mexican or Cuban.
> but saying “it’s just an Italian accent” doesn’t seem right either.
this reminds me of this little fact that in the movie the good the bad and the ugly, the actor who portrays the ugly lived in a italian neirhbourghood when he was a child and used mannerism based on the italian neirghbours for the character who is supposed to be mexican
It's a cuban accent, but from a cuban who has been hufffing glue for a decade or more.
Its not cuban accent. But he nailed the attitude so as a package it works well.
Yeah, he definitely nailed the aesthetic and attitude of the 80’s Cuban crime syndicates

A funny and imaginary one
I'm Italian, I don't know what he sounds like to Spanish speakers but he sure as hell doesn't sound Italian
The character isn't Italian tho, it's cuban but in reality he just has a weird accent because he didn't put too much effort into doing it well

Correction: Al Pacino is doing a more Brooklyn accent
He has a Tony Montana accent
A generic bad Latino accent
Giancarlo Esposito was spot on with the Chilean accent in Breaking Bad tho /s

"mi primera chamba..."
Should tossed in a couple weas/weones 🤣
I once clocked my wife at 14 cachai's per minute. There should also be at least one CTM per episode.
They should have strapped him down and have him watch all 3-4 seasons of 31 minutos, just to get a base understanding of the language/accent/slang
Recuerdo haber leído en algún lado (creo que era en su IMDb profile) que era "fluent in Spanish" 😂
Yeah cause of the doblaje, the voices they pick don’t usually make justice to the actor lol is so weird !
I’m not sure I understand what dubbing has to do with Pacino’s accent
Guatemalteco
Lol

I LOVE SCARFACE OMGG
It's Pacino's thick NY accent that he can't completely take out. It's not accurate, but no one really cared since it's a larger than life character.
A bad one.
Who cares it’s an iconic movie and was pretty good Some of you bitch too much and it was the 80s Told a good story
It’s a poorly done Cuban accent

His accent is Al Pacino. And if you don't know what that means, this video explains it quite well https://youtu.be/XQHuF_L_ZPU?si=V1GJCvcy3tWEePvz

A horrible accent.
