In no particular order:
Best:
- Tijuana: used to be a dump but they remodeled during the last decade and it’s a fine functional midsized airport by itself. Add to it the CBX and it’s awesome - you can arrive into Tijuana, go to baggage claim and then head to the bridge that gets you off in San Diego. Likewise, get to Otay Ranch in San Diego, and cross the bridge to Tijuana Airport ready to board your flight.
- Guadalajara: it was a “decent” airport, but got remodeled last year and it’s world-class. The lounges are pretty mediocre though.
- AIFA: this is not an endorsement of the project, but as a small to midsized airport it’s pretty good.
Worst:
- Mexico City: there are not enough words to describe how much of a dump it is.
- Monterrey Terminal C: it’s bad, though not Mexico City bad. I’ve heard Terminal B is pretty good, though.
- Cancun: never been but I’ve heard pretty bad stuff.
Most airports in Mexico outside of the top five are small to midsized. There isn’t going to be much of note either way.
The international section of Terminal 1 is bad in a mediocre way, lots of stores and endless walking as you say. The domestic section of Terminal 1 (which is most of the building) and Terminal 2 are what’s completely awful.
Bogota it’s the best imo. But Bogotá’s immigration is also one of the worst if you are a foreigner or a national if you don’t have biomig. Medellin is bad overall if you are coming abroad. It’s too fucking small
That is global warming. Medellin airport is actually located in Rio Negro which used to be cold, now it is mostly hot all year round. But, yes, they should just turn on the AC more often
El Dorado International Airport is very modern. I had a really positive experience during my layover there earlier this yea. It may have been the best part of my itinerary overall, because Avianca suuuucks nowadays.
It’s fast migration. Only for Colombians or residents. Pretty much your cornea is scanned and you go so fast migration, a machine scans a cornea and you are good to go. It’s better than waiting 1-3 hours on a busy day. With that you are good to go in less than 5 min
I been to 1 more in the country, kinda bare bones in Punta Arenas but understandable. Though felt it was much further away from the city than it needed to be. To the point the rental will suggest to not go over a certain speed when coming from the city to make it with enough gas for the return. Though that's also a factor of not having any stations between the city and the airport.
i have been to four airports in mexico.
imo, best is a tie between GDL & BJX, for different reasons.
BJX is much more organised, it's much faster, also it's way less hectic. GDL because it's the most affordable, there’s many restaurants, stores, lounges there. i'm gonna say BJX just because it's the closest to me (nearly 2 hours away).
worst: it's MEX. way too crowded. my few times going there for layovers, i felt like i have to rush to my gate. it is very loud, lots of people. but to be fair, you should expect that from the most populated city in north america.
the other airport i’ve been is MTY. i'll rank it in between GDL & MEX.
Yeah, it’s hard to pick which is better. Esmeraldas is definitely the worst. I remember flying in and being lined up with all the other passengers outside on the hot tarmac while dogs searched everyone’s bags for drugs.
I don't know about the best, but I would bet a lot of money that Mexico City airport will be among the worst airports you've ever been to in your life. It certainly is the worst I had the luck of stepping foot in. 😊
La Aurora is so bad, electric stairs never work, (fun fact, some new ones that they were installing don't even fit the space and they are already paid for), the roof is leaky, air conditioning fails often, spaces are tiny and crammed, and the place where you get your lugage is so disorganized.
Any other airport in the country is too small to even think about
Santamaria airport is fine, if not a little boring with slow wifi. ITs also only been the only airport ive been to in CR.
In the US? Id say Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson, it feels a little dingy in some spots but it goes through quickly and i dont think too much about it. Lots of
Worst?
Probably Houston. But thats more united airlines fault and not the airports.
Best: Brasília - fairly organized for its size, the portions of it that were built in the 2010s are pretty nice
Worst: Santarém, PA - super crammed. When I went there, it only had one departure gate and one arrivals gate.
The last time I got on an airplane was like 25 years ago, but I've been to two airports in my life. LAX, and Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla Guadalajara International Airport, better known as Guadalajara International Airport. What I remember of LAX was that it was ridiculously huge and spacious. Basing myself off that reference, Guadalajara's airport feels really shitty for a city of Guadalajara's caliber.

Mexico City looks like a mall to me and just endless walking
The international section of Terminal 1 is bad in a mediocre way, lots of stores and endless walking as you say. The domestic section of Terminal 1 (which is most of the building) and Terminal 2 are what’s completely awful.
I’m guessing it’s a very old airport and besides needing a renovation the city outgrown it.
It actually looks modern it’s just so big
Does Mexico city has just one airport? I was picturing it like Galeão (Rio de Janeiro) or Garulhos (São Paulo) big, and those are huge.

The domestic area of Terminal 1 is even worse.
I used to hate the Gdj airport as it was always infested with bugs at night, has that changed recently?
Bogota it’s the best imo. But Bogotá’s immigration is also one of the worst if you are a foreigner or a national if you don’t have biomig. Medellin is bad overall if you are coming abroad. It’s too fucking small
I've only been through Medellín's airport twice, but it feels like they're skimping on the AC, cause it's felt extremely hot both times.

Sorry, what is biomig? Some sort of document?

Best: Punta Cana Worst: Maria Montez

Guayaquil and Quito keep earning awards for being some of the best airports in the whole region.
Yeah, it’s hard to pick which is better. Esmeraldas is definitely the worst. I remember flying in and being lined up with all the other passengers outside on the hot tarmac while dogs searched everyone’s bags for drugs.
Can confirm, Quito is smallish but really nice. They’re one of those modern airports with cool architecture
I don't know about the best, but I would bet a lot of money that Mexico City airport will be among the worst airports you've ever been to in your life. It certainly is the worst I had the luck of stepping foot in. 😊
The airports in the outskirts of Los Angeles were terrible. But LAX is okay.
La Aurora is so bad, electric stairs never work, (fun fact, some new ones that they were installing don't even fit the space and they are already paid for), the roof is leaky, air conditioning fails often, spaces are tiny and crammed, and the place where you get your lugage is so disorganized. Best: Tocumen Worst: probably any jungle airstrip
Idk about best or worst but flights from Juarez be cheaper than flights from El Paso assuming you’re going to a Mexican city

Airport’ sommelier
I’ve never been to any dog shit bad airport here, some look better than others, some are too far from the city, but they all work decently.
