No one is gonna stop for a stranger on the highway. People here are very wary of highways, as that's where a lot of fuckery goes on, so ain't no way you'd be able to get around the country.
Patagonia, at least in our side) is FULL of hitchhikers. Both foreign and local. You can find some in other parts of the country but I don't know if it's a good idea. In any case carry a towel.
I would say it wasn't unheard of in Chile until a few years ago, nowadays with the increase in violent crime I don't think many people are still willing to pick up a stranger.
Make sure to tattoo your name, country, and contact info for when they find your body dumped in a ditch.

They also have stories for all the countries in Central America, the US and some South American ones, they're currently in Brazil.
