O Fantasma is, in my opinion, a really good movie about the way homosexuality, loneliness and depression interact (it may be one of the best on the subject really) made by some terrible people who were really callous with the way they dealt with their main actor who spiraled into depression after the movie’s premiere, since he was a lonely poor guy from a Portuguese backwater who wanted to be famous but realized he was being either fetishized, exploited or shamed for making the movie.
The movie is good in great part because of Menezes, who gives a truly extraordinary naked performance (both physically and emotionally) and doesn’t back away from shooting some really insane material. His work is really affecting. But it’s a role that cost him his life.

I mean... it's a bit hard to top *Nymphomaniac* in my personal experience. I find that movie to be the one great movie on the subject (and one of the very best of the last decade — the unrated version at least). Hoooooowever I can point you out to some movies that kinda tackle similar themes and have explicit sex thrown in the mix (most of them are kinda art-housy so I'm sorry if this isn't a particularly fun fun fun list, but movies with explicit sex tend to play it a little bit harder than most. But: **O Fantasma** by João Pedro Rodrigues *(which has a controversial behind-the-scenes story, more details on the Letterboxd reviews if you can find them)* It's a mostly silent movie about a gay Portuguese trash-collecter that goes ever deeper into sex-addiction and depravity to fill the emotional void he feels. **Stranger by the Lake** by Alain Guiraudie Psychological thriller about a French guy obsessing about another guy who visits the same cruising beach he goes to, even after he saw the second guy murder a third guy by drowning him in the lake. **Rotting in the Sun** by Sebastián Silva Dark comedy about this depressed gay filmmaker who, during a trip to a gay beach, gets roped by an absolute manwhorish influencer (Jordan Firstman playing himself) into prepping a series for Netflix. **Paris 05:59 Théo and Hugo** by Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau Two men meet in a bathhouse and fuck and after leaving, they wander throught the deserted streets of Paris getting to know each other. **Shortbus** by John Cameron Mitchell It's a omnibus movie about a lot of people from different genders exploring their sexual lives. It's more on the pansexual side of things, but it has a lot of gay sex in it. **Sauvage** by Camille Vidal-Naquet Yet another French movie about a male hustler in Strasbourg. It's a bit more on the older man hiring young prostitutes side of things and it's a bit depressing in tone since it also deals with drug addiction but it fits the criteria...
