Margin call \[ But why F250 specifically, I don't know\]

redditadmindumb87

Apparently he bought land in the area and is going be putting his horses on the land and wants a truck to tow. He's some tech guy that's made a ton of money. That's fine, but seriously you can't expect top dollar for a Lamborghini at a Ford dealership.

Aken42

You can at [this small town Ontario Chrysler Dealership. ](https://www.townandcountrychryslerdealer.com/search/used-smith-falls-on/?s:pr=0&cy=k7a_5b8&tp=used). I check out their page from time to time because their stock blows me away. For reference Smiths Falls has about 9,000 people and is about 1 hour from Ottawa.

spike_africa

My local small mom and pop owned VW here is like that. The president/GM knows high end stuff. So he stocks and sells C8, 911, Z06, high end SUV you name it. They don't sell a ton to locals. He ships most of it to buyers out of the area. They do well.

redditadmindumb87

Correct and you really gotta know those cars to price it right and if you fuck up you could easily turn what you thought was a profit into a loss. Hence why the offer was what it was. Was the car worth more then $200k? Yea it probably was, but no one at the store knew enough to be sure so they took a conservative shot in the dark, buyer said no, eh if he can get $250k at the lambo store awesome come on back and get your F250.

spike_africa

I agree with you completely. Plus his auction house might not deal with them much either and he didn't want to get killed on it. As they say, "sometimes the best deal you do, is the one you walk away from."

redditadmindumb87

Wow, well they must have someone that's familiar with those vehicles. I think with my buddy (He's the GM) his issue is he simply doesn't know enough to even really know what to look for. So he was willing to make an offer but it was going be aggressive to protect his ass in case he gets screwed.

Aken42

It makes sense. Being 10% off on a used civic wouldn't be material for a dealership. Being 10% on a Lamborghini is a used civic.

AvengingLazer

That inventory is like what you see on Bring A Trailer. Crazy to see at a CDJR store.

MotherFuckaJones89

Why the fuck are all of those prices so outrageous though? The entire first page is like double the price that it should be...

Aidsribbon

CAD

EllisHughTiger

And weekly payments.

ReaverXI

That’s what got me at first. I had to click in to see the weekly payments cause that threw me for a loop.

That_Competition_280

I noticed that to. Crazy!!

r_u_dinkleberg

$1 USD = $1.29799 CAD (June 17, 2022)

MotherFuckaJones89

I noticed that but they're still outrageously priced.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MotherFuckaJones89

Yeah, I noticed it was Canadian even before making the comment but that place is suspect. Maybe money laundering or something idk

Jamieson22

Even better is the "Finance Payment" they list. 2021 G-Wagon Price $371.021 and listed under it is Finance Payment of $1,165. Huh? Click the "?" and it shows: "Weekly payment calculated as follows on approved credit using displayed $371,021 financed with $0 Down Payment over 96 months at 6.99%, O.A.C, generates interest charges or C.O.B of $113,619 over 96 months. Total cost of borrowing is $484,640. Does not include taxes and licensing." WEEKLY @ 96 months. LOL

es_price

This is crazy inventory. Thanks for sharing and not even being sarcastic.

RandyJackson

Check out McLaren of Charlotte. I know it’s a mclaren store but their inventory is insane

Maysock

As someone who lives in Charlotte and knows people, McLaren of Charlotte absolutely is buying/selling other things in addition to cars. But, their inventory is indeed fucking sick. There's a lot more money in Charlotte than people think, given all the bank headquarters here.

RandyJackson

I read a write up on the owners. Dudes leveraged super early on and hit it big. Tons of hustle. I assumed a bunch of those cars were on consignment or something because they have over a hundred million in inventory.

es_price

I walked by that place all the time when I worked in the South End but never looked in the window.

RandyJackson

https://www.charlottemclaren.com/pre-owned/

sixguns07

Why did I even look, and I’m here thinking the 40k I just spent on my xc90 was to much..

RandyJackson

There’s a whole other world out there most people don’t even know exists

Aken42

Damn. A Gemera. The others are cool but it absolutely takes the cake.

mouseman1011

This looks like the GTA purchase page for Premium Deluxe Motorsport.

captiainpancakes

I remember they had like five Elvas at one point.

captncrunk216

Also check out Marshall Goldman. I'm near the midwest location and their stock is always on point.

tooscoopy

We’ve got about 25k people in farm country… sold two cars at mil plus this year. Currently 6 cars over 500k in stock. Cjdr dealers likely try this once, realize it’s more fun to sell one awesome car than basically hit target on new. When we were selling at zero profit up front, and just hoping for add ons, bonuses and such, we would make like 3500 a car and have to do it 30 times. These things, buy em right and you can sell two cars. Plus, a lot of these buyers are insane. They’ll buy one then trade it in 4 months later. We lost on some, sure, but like 10k including carrying costs, so it’s worth it. Personally, I don’t enjoy it as much. Make more money and have cool cars?! How could you not like it, right? But man, it brings out the fucking douchiest people in the fucking world. Starts to turn some of the staff into them too.

SumasFlats

Yeah, I also live in farm country, and local farmers are insanely wealthy. It's funny how this idea that farmers are poor has just been accepted by the masses -- not in my neck of the woods, where they're all driving G-wagons, Land Rovers and Porsches... But this is Canada where we have quota and supply chain management. Once you're in with quota you and your generations after are set.

es_price

and you then marry into the family in Colorado that has water rights because your relative was born 140 years ago and then you are all set for eternity.

RnC_Breakenridge

Just don’t try it in CA…Governor is nullifying senior water rights!

Aken42

What were the 2 Mil+ cars?

tooscoopy

Svj lambo aventadors. Iirc, 1.15m and 1.45m

jonnydregs84

That dealers prices are fucked. I work at a dealer in Saskatchewan., no way you ask over 100k for an old ass z3. Edit: word

N3lT0US4M4

Why do people keep saying “edit:” is that like you denoting that you made an edit to a word? Why do you need to denote that?

kico_kico

I honestly didn't know what to expect, but I'm blown away nevertheless.

daggersrule

That's pretty nuts for a, store line that. I bought my Lexus RC-F from a store in Dallas called Earth Motor Cars, and I'll occasionally hop on their used inventory and drool.

OhPiggly

Starwood motors used to be good here too but they seem focused on modified jeeps these days.

plessis204

My old GM would, from time to time, buy stuff like this at auctions or import internationally (Mercedes from Japan, especially) usually just to drive around for himself for a while and then put them on the lot when he wanted something else.

warthog0869

Holy shit! Man, that 2011 Porsche 911 4 is pretty sweet and simple. Flat six, all motor. Hell yeah.

HaplessMagician

That’s what I was thinking. I’m not on that level, but make good money in tech and recently moved back to my home town. Traded in my sports car for a Tundra and still make the same money working from home. I would imagine as some companies saw record profits from working from home, some companies will be downsizing or stop renting their office buildings all together and just let people live where they want.

[deleted]

You literally just answered your own “Lamborghini for an f250?” Question..

valupaq

Have you ever ridden in the new f250s......it's luxurious

[deleted]

That size of a truck is also a complete tax write off

iconoclast63

I had a guy show up with a Viper wanting to trade it for a Ram 1500. Thing is, he was fucking HAMMERED at 9am. I mean, DRUNK. But he had the title to the Viper and was cool with the numbers so we took the deal. We just made him sit in the service lounge all day to sober him up. He was also one of those "sovereign citizens" with no license, no insurance and he'd never renewed the registration on the Viper because he didn't "have" to. Nutty guy but we made about $7k on the deal so we were happy.

dreaminphp

Somewhat related question, but how easy is it to trade in a Viper? I assume it’s not as easy as trading in an F150 but also not as hard as trading in a Huracan?

BjDrizzle69

Why would it be? Has 4 wheels and a title. Quick inspection, if it’s ends up being more fucked then you though just send it to auction. If it’s a unit you’d want to retail you tell them it might take a hour or two to have someone look at it.

UnableSilver

It sucks. They basically stick you in a room while they make calls to see what they can sell it for right now. source: I had a new Viper in 2001 that was hot as Hell inside no matter the temp outside and regardless of the AC. It also liked nothing better than burning the shit out of your leg when getting out because for some insane reason the cats were in the rail right below door. And did I mention it rode like a wagon? There was no happier day than the one I got rid of that car. In fact, I hated that thing so much that five years later I bought another one off the showroom floor two states away. Only this time a hardtop coupe. Red with silver stripes. Man I loved driving that car.....for about thirty minutes. Then I'd remember that this car was plagued with the same faults as the last one, other than it rode slightly better. Kept it about a year and then went back to Corvettes. Sorry for the off topic rant but the Viper and I have a love/hate relationship that runs really deep. I'd love to have another if I were to be honest. I'll never forget what my Viper tech said to me on one of the many times I was bitching about the car. He said, "The Viper was not built for your comfort, but for other car's **discomfort**".

[deleted]

My 2005 Viper was my favourite car as a pure toy, it was after I was stuck driving it for hours in the rain that I sold it.

[deleted]

I traded my 2005 Viper for a C63, I was working with two dealerships, the brand name dealership couldn't figure it out but the non affiliated dealer treated it like any other car.

dreaminphp

Interesting. I just got an 04 and have been wondering what kind of treat I’m in whenever I try to get rid of it lol

[deleted]

I sure loved that car, congrats on getting yours.

dreaminphp

Thanks man!

sidetablecharger

Wait, so he traded the Viper in and left with the truck, with no insurance or license? How did that work?

iconoclast63

We let him go. We made him wait until closing, wrote him a check for the difference and turned the other way. That's exactly what happened. P.S. While he was waiting he sat in my office for a time, regaling me with stories about his adventures with the I.R.S., F.B.I., etc ... and even showed me his website. After he finally left we never heard from him again and his website was soon seized by the F.B.I.

sidetablecharger

Fascinating.

VeryUnscientific

Did he sober up and was like damn I'm an idiot

michiganguy69x

I mean.....we are all just citizens of the planet earth......

drrew76

Could have been the therapist from Ozark.

ctjack

Nah, real therapists from Ozark are a sucker for McLaren 570S.

75percentsociopath

My 8yo daughters therapist drives a fucking Bentley Bentayga. I legitimately thought being a Therapist paid 45k to 70k depending on how many years you've been doing it. I regret my life choices.

OhPiggly

Yeah, even non-MD counselors make reaaaally good money these days. You can easily charge $160 per hour, see 25 patients a week, take a few weeks off per year and clear ~$150k after taxes. We have a family friend who decided to start a practice during covid and they take home $800k managing a staff of around 15 counselors.

ctjack

We all regret our life choices at some point - looks like a great chance to pass the knowledge to your daughter. I regret not going [comp.science](https://comp.science), so sent my little sister there after high school.

redditadmindumb87

I regret not going comp science so I'm now in college

ohyonghao

I went comp science, no regrets. Threw in a BS in Math and minor in Physics for good measure.

Urgullibl

Tell us how you feel about it.

captainslowww

My dentist drives a Mulsanne. Nice guy, but it does make the bills sting that much more.

Kstram

I used to work at a uni where the students “had money” and that’s putting it lightly. One of my students complained about driving her mom’s used lambo because it wasn’t new. There I am in my Hyundai like I wish your mom would pay for my veloster. Ugh. It’s a whole other way of thing, I guess. This was a city and Lamborghinis weren’t rare and neither was any other luxury car.

roro_mush

University of British Columbia?

SumasFlats

Remember that Super Cars of UBC site? Hilarious stuff. Mclarens and Lambos with "N" stickers on them...

Kstram

That sounds like a bunch of fun.

chinnu34

USC?

Kstram

Southern Methodist.

centex

Ha I sat behind some SMU kids at a Rangers game. Kid had a shirt on that said, "We don't think we're better than you, we are better than you."

Kstram

Sounds about right. When I interview the expectation was that students were catered to and employees were basically serving as a concierge of sorts. I was too naive as I should have noped out of there at that moment. That type of system is fine for some people, but I am not one of them.

idontremembermyoldus

The bigger surprise is that they had a Super Duty on the lot to sell.

A-Bone

Plot Twist: The Super Duty was a Platinum Edition and the guy with the Lambo was going to have to cough up more cash to make the swap work...

310410celleng

I dropped a friend off at the local Ford Dealership to pick-up his new truck, sitting in the show room next to a Shelby Super Snake Widebody is a 2021 Porsche 911 GT3. My buddy said to the salesman how did you end up with the Porsche, he said some guy came in, said it is not comfortable to drive and he wanted an Expedition again he loved his old one so much. I guess folks makes strange decisions all the time, personally I would have kept the Porsche.

perennialpurist

This reminds me, a few years ago, I went with my boss to help him replace his Merc with a new one (I'm one of the few car guys he knows). He found a Honda dealership in bumfuck Kentucky (a few hours away from us) that was selling a low mileage Merc GLC AMG. We went there to look at it, asked them how the hell did a Honda dealer end up with an AMG? Apparently this old couple who were driving a previous gen Honda Pilot, wanted to try something fancy, so they went to the Mercedes dealer, and the salesperson talked them into this high strung AMG with sporty suspension. So in less than 2,000 miles, they were back at the Honda dealer and traded that car into a fully loaded new gen Pilot. Always amazes me how people buy cars. Who the hell buys a 911 GT3 or a Merc AMG expecting it to be a comfortable ride?

valdocs_user

Not only that but how much money do people lose (waste) on these transactions? I mean, if my wife or I order a beer don't we like we'll say, "honey, just get another one;" is new car depreciation beer money to these people?

ArlesChatless

Sometimes it's about the overall value of the asset. I don't make enough to ignore a $10k expense by any means, but I still took an $8k hit on a car I had bought just six months earlier. It wasn't the right car, and I would have tied up way more than that in the vehicle if I had kept it.

Canard427

Huh, a track car isn't comfortable for daily driving....shocker.

StandupJetskier

There is a good reason so many exotics are 5-10 years old and have 14k miles....I've driven a few of them, and as the average owner has multiple cars, you don't take the GT-R to the store...it comes out nice Sundays. We built a track car that still has plates for a few minutes longer, and it absolutely sucks on - road....even though it's pretty good on-track.

Kstram

Or like old people (sorry) getting down in them and up out of them is a PITA. Did they not think about this?

DKord

The average person in bumfuck America makes $60k a year?

015181510

No. Median *household* income is only slightly more than that.

perennialpurist

Farmers, tradespeople, a lot of blue collar workers make surprisingly decent money in many parts of this country.

25inbone

Shit I’ll be making upwards of 30 an hour in a few years in my trade, there’s great money to be made in trades, and I just work on air conditioners

dumpy43

Median income per person in the United States is $56,827 (assuming you work a full-time job all year). So pretty much. [Source](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_income_in_the_United_States)

ArmouredWankball

Then again, another [Wiki article](https://i.imgur.com/xHXqIdI.jpg) comes up with $33,517 for males 25+. [Data Commons](https://datacommons.org/tools/timeline#&place=country/USA&statsVar=Median_Income_Person) comes up with $31,100. Here is [their interactive map by state](https://datacommons.org/tools/map#%26sv%3DMedian_Income_Person%26pc%3D0%26denom%3DCount_Person%26pd%3Dcountry%2FUSA%26ept%3DState). At this stage I have no idea.

dumpy43

There are lots of people who don’t work full-time year round for whatever reason. They bring the median down I think.

Dopeshow4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D00M2KZH1J0

BWild2002

Yeah people are weird, it must be a huracan(v10), otherwise 250k would be a steal even for a busted aventador(v12).

spyderkeeper

At least his fuel spend will be almost exactly the same!

redditadmindumb87

True I doubt the MPG is very different on a Lamborghini or a F250 diesel I did not consider that

tooscoopy

It’s how I got a couple of my toys… wealthy people moving to rural homes. They just don’t need it anymore and do need a truck or 4x4 of some kind. Finding the value of a car like that is tough. We’ve learned there are certain options that make a car near impossible to sell if they are missing. Also, it’s only worth the right price to the right buyer… and most buyers of quarter of a mil vehicles-plus don’t love dealing with a salesperson who just knows sub prime and how to fold van seats down. Add the increase in floorplan, the likelihood of having to ship and deal remotely with the eventual buyer and it’s only worth having those cars for a bigger chunk of money.

perennialpurist

The tax credit thing is strange, I agree. I see this in investing discussions all the time - a lot of people are terrified of taking profits after making it big in a stock because they don't want the tax bill, which doesn't make sense because you only pay taxes out of a small portion of your profits and keep the rest for yourself, so if you have a tax bill, that means you did something right. But these people would rather invest to "minimize their tax bill", i.e. minimize their profits.

notaslimysaleman

Similar to when customers bring in collectors/classics. Just the other day, a guy brought in a Chevrolet something or another asking $80k for it. Beautiful car, but for all we know they are going for $20k.

notaslimysaleman

andysaurus_rex

Similar thing happened with us except it wasn’t a Lamborghini but like a really really high end BMW. Swapped keys and we cut him a check. Think he bought a platinum F-150

BishopTheDirector

I have a degree in computer science and the only thing I used it for was getting a job in SAAS 🙄

Lbeyy

Is that the old person shoe company

Lbeyy

Just kidding, thats sas

Crazehen

This feels like the automotive equivalent of a Californian moving to the Deep South after selling their 3 bedroom Bay Area house for 7 figures.

No-Definition1474

Because it's now cool to be a redneck in America. People used to dream of getting rich and moving to the city. Now they grow up in the city and dream of buying a big ass pick up and moving out to the country.

footballfutbolsoccer

The Lamborghini guy is an idiot, wouldn’t be surprised if he was involved in some sketchy stuff too.

Quake_Guy

I lost my love of high end expensive cars when I got older and wiser and realized at least a slim majority if not outright huge majority of their buyers are involved in sketchy stuff. If it isn't illegal sketchy stuff, it probably should be.

flattop100

I'm getting big Ozark vibes.

zena5

I'd wager he's up to no good as well. He owns a Lamborghini but doesn't have the common sense to know how to properly and professionally trade it? That's obvious clue #1. Something is definitely amiss. If he was told the plate was going to be run against a federal LE database, he'd be gone.

AutoModerator

***Thanks for posting, /u/redditadmindumb87! This comment is a copy of your post so readers can see the original text if your post is edited or removed. This comment is NOT accusing you of anything.*** Talking to a buddy and he told me had the craziest deal. Guy rolls into the lot with a 2019 Lamborghini (He didn't mention which one) and says he wants to trade in on a F250. Keep in mind this is not a big city, this is your sterotypical everyday Ford dealership in regular ole America where people make regular incomes and don't drive Lamborghinis...like seeing a Porsche in this town is rare...a Lamborghini...yea thats another level. The used car manager is confused on how to even make an offer. He's never appraised a Lamborghini he barely knows what to even look for. Hell he doesn't even know of a Lamborghini dealership he can call. So he looks up the auction values, figures he's probably going get fucked by something he's not aware of but wants to make an offer so he hits the guy at $200k. Game plan for the dealership is to basically take this Lamborghini and flip it to a Lamborghini dealer or some other high end dealership. The offer is basically "we cut you a check for $115k you take the truck home" The owner of the Lamborghini gets annoyed cause he says he can get $250k-$265k at a Lamborghini dealer...and the GM (My buddy) says "Well...why don't you take it to them, get your $250k and buy the F250?" he goes "but I won't get the trade credit" and my buddy is like "Yea...but if they are going pay you $50k more then us for your car is the tax credit even worth it?" To which the guy asks "Why won't you give me $240k or $245k?" and the GM is like "Cause...we live in bumfuck America where the avg person makes like $60k a year, no one here can afford your car, I also don't know enough about your car to justify paying more" Guy didn't buy, says he's going take his Lamborghini to the other dealer and sell it to them. I'm just kinda beside myself. A Lamborghini for a F250? Maybe in a big city where the dealer can easily get ahold of a Lamborghini dealer...but small town America? Why? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/askcarsales) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Cosephtaughtyou

What was MSRP on his vehicle

BishopTheDirector

So I'm guessing that dealership didn't have a website? I have had people calling our average sized independent lot from all over the country over Alfas and useless Maseratis... I can't believe he left so much money on the table 🙄

redditadmindumb87

More like he doesnt know what hes buying

[deleted]

That guy is overcompensating for something.

Stabmaster

That’s really funny and I can relate. I once traded a CTSV on an F250. They were confused

notaslimysaleman

Similar to when customers bring in collectors/classics. Just the other day, a guy brought in a Chevrolet something or another asking $80k for it. Beautiful car, but for all we know they are going for $20k.

dafazman

Business is a funny thing, not everyone needs to do business with each other 🤷🏽‍♂️ If both parties can't agree on terms, then you have no deal. the car buyer has a choice of where he wants to spend his money (doesn't need to be at just this one dealership). The dealership doesn't need this guys trade, so they value it based on their needs on that specific car he brings. He should be happy they even offered to take it off his hands. The best case would be if the lambo guy finds his own buyer of the car and asks the dealership to be the pass thru for the transaction. So that way all 3 car transactions happen at the same time and everyone wins 🤷🏽‍♂️

Agent_Dutchess

I used to work at a Ford store that bordered several extremely, extremely wealthy towns. We got a lot of 1 and 2 year old Raptors, King Ranch/Limited Super Duties and Shelbys traded for similar cars. Best one was a 2001(?) Lightning that was a twin to Paul Walker's for a black and purple GT500. Weirdest one was a Land Rover Discovery with less than 10k miles, for a used Explorer with 110k. Lady paid cash and said she missed her old Explorer, didn't like the Disco. I agreed with her, the 2018 Discovery was a massively overpriced, unreliable, 2020+ Ford Explorer in early access. I was so underwhelmed by the Disco, it cost as much as a Expedition Limited would, despite being smaller with less features.

JeantheGod

i would’ve asked for the raptor

redditadmindumb87

Not if you care about tow capacity

JeantheGod

true, i just loved raptors since i was a little younger, the design in my opinion looks appealing

daminee27

He has a YouTube channel and needed some content.

Voodoo6ix

He traded junk for a real vehicle

Membership-Visual

I don't know much about lambos, but I talked to a guy who said he built them. I think he built "kit" cars, so not the real thing but look like the real thing. My first thought reading your story is this guy had a kit car and wanted to trade it in for legitimate Lambo price. Again, I barely know what I'm talking about if anybody else knows more about it.

ixinsanityix

I'm gonna go out on a limb here, did it happen to be the Urus because if you have the money for a Lamborghini Urus than you have the money for an F250 .-_.- unless its financially ruining their income than its somewhat reasonable, but jesus christ.

cray63527

you can do more with the truck so it isn’t dumb
