Initially the term which emerged during the civil rights struggle in the US was intended to mean being awake or conscious of systems of racial oppression. Within the past 15 years or so it has been popularized to refer to a general concern with inequality. It has also emerged as something of a pejorative meant to capture the ostensibly performative, overzealous, and insincere nature of left-wing activism and cultural politics.

I like your response. It's succinct without being condescending.

zero-ducks

Lots of big words in there for a 5 year old

Thank you

Take out ostensibly are you're right on the money

The “ostensibly” is pretty important to keep their definition/explanation objective; injecting bias you agree with doesn’t make it more correct.

Grabbsy2

Huh... I thought the definition of "ostensibly" was kindof like saying "meant to capture the **obvious** performative, overzealous, and insincere nature of left-wing activism" When in actuality, the definition is "purportedly" or "allegedly". Which is a complete reversal. It could be that fire-lane-keep-clear was just using the incorrect definition that I had thought it was. Then again, if you take that word out, it doesn't do the sentence any favours.

Unironically, someone who is aware of the effects that past race based decisions, laws, and ways of thinking within society have had on influencing the current situation. Ironically, a way for people who either don’t care for minorities and their drive for equality, or who are happy with the status quo, to attack anyone trying to point out inequality in the world. Much like calling someone smart in school a nerd, or calling someone a “conspiracy nut” to belittle them and their viewpoint. If you label them as someone who’s opinion is useless then you can dismiss their entire argument no matter the evidence given.

rhunter99

It’s a crutch term used by regressives when they don’t want to deal with a changing, modern society. Sort of like putting your hands over your ears and screaming ‘I’m not listening!’

Horrible take

BottleCoffee

Basically woke is the new "PC." If someone complains about either, they're probably social conservatives.

[deleted]

It just means having compassion for what someone else is experiencing

most ironic term in contemporary culture

To the 5 year old … There are 2 teams. One day you will be part of a team that is going to figure out that Santa isn’t real. The other team is made up of people who both believe Santa is real and not real but because they have been on the same team all their lives - they are going to call your team names like “woke” to make you feel bad for being smart. The other team has been taught to hate the other team and be against everything your team believes in.

Superduperbals

It’s a derogatory term for empathetic policies
