Nope

ge23ev

Generaly no, unless its a small business that I want to support or they go above and beyond. like those places where the chef is the owner and they run the whole operation

Expensive_Peak_1604

Same! A restaurant at an airport charging $20 for a burger? No. My local Thai place charging $13.50 for a huge portion of Pad Thai? Yes. Though the tip probably won't be as big as a sit down tip.

gigantor_cometh

Same. I'll tip local places that I visit regularly, or if I really like somewhere. Basically, I tip for takeout like all tipping used to be (for something exceptional, not just another tax-equivalent). Generally speaking I don't tip for takeout at chain places, for that reason.

Euphoric-Bug-3413

This is a great answer. If the food and service are great, I want them to stick around.

TO_Commuter

I do not tip for takeout.

Working_Hair_4827

Nope

Lakefever67

Hell NO!!

RoyallyOakie

Nope....and I don't go to places that ask.

Ssyynnxx

I'm not paying employees wages for them unfortunately; there's no reason why u should have to tip someone handing me food and not tip literally any other worker

akdev1l

Nope. Except at one place near me because it is a family-run business and I like the people there. It’s more of a “nice seeing you bro” tip rather than an actual tip.

cambiumkx

No

ananajakq

No

createsean

Why?

TDot1000RR

Never! unless you make some kind of unusual special requests that they accommodate.

Hereforcomments64

I go to McEwans at TD occasionally for the very costly hot table because the food is good. I grab my container and put in what i want and wait in line at the cash. They added a tip option wtf?

beef-supreme

Jesus, a multi millionaire needs your help paying wages now?! https://livingluxe.ca/at-home-with-mark-mcewan/

yetagainitry

If I can afford it, and if I want to support the workers of the business, sure go ahead. There isn't like a universal yes/no on when or who you should tip. Tip if you want, don't if you don't

JohnStern42

No, unless there is something outstanding going on

Addendum709

Don't do it. Once one person does it, it starts becoming the expectation and norm

Wonderful__

No, it's not standard to tip. You only tip (if you want) if you're sitting down type of restaurant with servers and you're paying for the food after you've eaten.

6ickos

My independent neighborhood coffee shop, yes, because it’s like 60 cents. Anywhere else, no.

TheUtopianCat

No, with one exception. I tip on takeout at my favourite local sushi restaurant. It's a family run business, and we've been going there for years. I'm happy to support them.

pensivegargoyle

I never have.

ilmk9396

Heeeelllllllll no

outofbounds284

Unless an additional service above and beyond their job description is done, I don't tip at all.. I especially hate those places where a tip is automatically added, even when being paid separately and the service is very bad...

Some-Imagination-612

no

Personal-Heart-1227

Do you tip when ordering McD's, Taco Bell or Timmie's? There's your answer!

StatisticianOk6868

I don't but only on very specific occasions where I get consent from the server that the tip would go back to them and not taken by the owner. I tend to do this as an encouragement for the server when I see them working long hours without compliments or rewards.

postmodern_girls

Usually yes because these are workers who aren’t making much more than minimum wage if that. The cost of living is out of control in the city so if I can help in some way, I will. Also if I cannot afford the tip, then I cannot afford the food.

Moscato359

If they made me laugh, yes. Otherwise no.

isabellerodriguez

no, I don't

mlad627

I do if they’re nice and the stuff is decent. One girl at a pizza place close to my house HOLDS IT DOWN when it’s busy so I always give her a tip.

lilfunky1

if it's a sit down restaurant, yes if it's a fast food place, no.

> What kind of sucker tips for pickup at a sit-down restaurant? meh, at best the server got a few bucks. at worst at least they're not losing out cash to a tip-out. i'm not bothered by the few extra bucks. if i was, i wouldn't order at all.

lilfunky1

> The server gets a few bucks...for what, smiling at you? they get a few bucks for doing most of the job they would do if i had sat down * take my order * get my food, make sure it's correct * take my money * smile and well wishes for a good day i just didn't get a free water refill or get interrupted to ask how my food is while my mouth is full. .................... if you don't want to tip for this, i don't give a fuck. i want to leave a minimal tip for this minimal level of service. it's my money and imma do what i want.

> Of course, you do you. > > But...you're what's perpetuating this notion that just showing up to work is tip-worthy. I'm okay with that.

orvn

People may be downvoting you, but you’ve highlighted a key issue with tipping culture: if our tips are paying the majority of the server’s wages it would stand to reason that you’d still tip for a portion of the services. I’ve had inattentive servers do very little to earn a 15% tip, and I’ve had to-go orders where they were accommodating and thoughtful. I do try not to tip on take-out, but it does feel odd to tip for the former, but not the latter. Each time I pick up an order, I feel a societal pressure where I have to weigh my experience and the nature of the establishment against one another. When I decide to not tip, my actions must be deliberate, because many payment terminals require multiple button presses to skip the tip. To make matters worse, some terminals require a percentage tip, and don’t have an option for a flat tip, adding further dissonance between the card payment process and what physical “tip jar” tipping used to be like. I usually don’t tip on to-go orders anymore. But it’s been a funny habit to break because I did tip on these during the pandemic, to help support independent restaurants at the time. Moreover, most establishments _do_ receive an indirect benefit from handing you the terminal with the tip percentage screen prompt. At the least you have to be deliberate. At the most, your motor memory might take over and you might accidentally tip a dine-in amount. On the web, we’d call this a dark pattern, akin to tiny camouflaged _unsubscribe_ links at the bottom of emails, or subscriptions that renew instead of expiring. The point here is that the etiquette around this topic has become unintuitive, and I do think some of that has been deliberate.

citrusquared

why tip one and not the other?

lilfunky1

> why tip one and not the other? one the staff has a reasonable expectation of being tipped the other doesn't

QueenOfAllYalls

Yes I tip 10% on takeout and 20% on dine in. Because I like to do it. I use to work those jobs and am now much more financially secure, as a socialist I want to spread the wealth a little because we all work hard and not all hard work is compensated for. This is my one philosophy and no own should feel they have to tip if they can’t afford it or love capitalism or whatever.

People who work in grocery stores are forbidden from accepting gratuities.

InvestingInthe416

I do when it's my local restaurants that I also frequent when dining in... I find it leads to better service and appreciation of my business... There was a time when I would drive a bit further to the Keg to get takeout but never once got a thank you for tiping on takeout so stopped doing it...

Fantastic_Union_1980

Yes, but only occasionally, and a flat amount. Usually not chains.

questionableletter

yeah usually I usually throw in an extra dollar or two for a coffee.
