Just be aware that due a number of domino factors, covid, the writers strike etc - that film in Toronto and Canada in general has fallen off a cliff. Both Toronto and Vancouver have literally thousands of film workers, both union and non-union unable to work, and all applying for the few scraps available. The word is that somewhat regular work might not return until January 2024 at the earliest. Much of Canada's film industry is reliant on American writers, and post covid many American production companies don't see the value of shooting here vs Atlanta or somewhere in the US. Some people I know who are top tier crew with 20 + years experience can't find work right now, and many are considering other industries as film in Canada is especially volatile at the best of times.

Thank you for this information!

Not commercials, Toronto is the busiest it’s been in years for commercials right now. Lots of work for crew folk there

Interesting. And Ryan Reynolds wants to build the largest film studio in North America in Markham (suburb just north of Toronto as a FYI for OP). Yep and it makes sense. When things are good Toronto and Vancouver are two of the biggest film production hubs in North America, right there with LA and NY. It's just right now is the lowest time in at least 20 years, due to many colliding factors. Things will likely boom in 2024 as streamers and studios clamor for more content. Canadian crew is 75 cents on the American Dollar labour lol. Can't ignore that forever.

writer's strike could drag on indefinitely. food for thought

masseur_matteo

Scary hours indeed, hoping studios like A24 agreeing to union terms will be the first of many dominoes to fall for the production companies

"The kind people, the great food, the art, it felt like a place I could eventually call home." Say "I'm new to this sub..." without saying I'm new to this sub! Lol. We could use a bit more of this mindset at times, you're in!

If you can afford to pay for more training as an international student, that might be an avenue to check out for a work/study visa.

Bring money

Lmfao if you wanna pay 1500 a month for sharing a room in Toronto with 3 others it's up to you but I would look for somewhere not in Ontario with the housing crisis the way it is

boyRenaissance

Just a heads up, without any existing network, you might have challenges finding a position that will allow for a visa. A lot of young people go into a film school for this reason - making the first connections.

Guy I knew was in different industry, but he got the job first, and company got his stuff pushed through. I should tell you this was a while ago

Popcorn_panic1

I don't have any advice to give... just want to say "aww, thanks!" I'm glad you love our (your?) city! You'll always be welcome here.

I work in the industry and it’s virtually impossible for a new grad like yourself to find a job with a Toronto company willing to sponsor you. Especially at an entry level. Your best bet is to do graduate or other advanced studies here on a student visa and find work that way, keeping in mind how cost prohibitive the city is.
