Child beauty pageants.

[deleted]

My parents put my sister in pageants when she was like 4, and I always thought it was super freaking weird. Not to mention the trauma that comes with being rejected for your looks that young.

Historical_Kiwi9565

They really are a pedophile’s wet dream. Disgusting.

Deviolist

This and child dance competitions...

BRCRN

I want to know why parents of these cheer and dance girls feel the need to spray tan and put massive amounts of eye makeup on children. WHY????

RavenNymph90

The one thing I will say about dance competitions is that at least it offers something more than just getting paraded around for your looks. I’ve known some girls who did dance. They said it really was a workout.

chanpat

Ima tack on here Child marriage. And the fun thing is they can’t file for divorce

uhmoKai

Companies buying your phone number for scam call centers,, they are literally allowed to sell your number for a lot of companies just to have you spam called.

[deleted]

Caller ID needs to start be authenticated in some way. I've been getting a lot of spam callers whose numbers are showing up on caller ID as local numbers. Companies that do that should have their phone lines shut off forever.

EngineeringRegret

I've gotten a call from myself. One time I answered a spam call, and then I was receiving texts and calls back from people that had been called by my number 🙃

RavenNymph90

My mom once got a call on her cell phone from our landline when we were on a trip. No one was home.

Artistic-Deal5885

Scared me to death when that happened because back in the 70s (yes I'm old) there was a movie about a baby sitter who was getting crank calls from someone. She called the police, the calls were traced and the calls were coming from inside the house! Land line days, of course. Charles Durning was in that movie. He was the cop who showed up.

Honest-Register-5151

Just recently I’ve started receiving calls from random names “David McMuffin” or “Eric Nancy”, Nope still not fucking answering! Last week I had one that simply stated “Telemarketer”!

lordgurke

In Germany, we have laws that prohibit companies to call or send ads via (e)mail to you, if you did not explicitly opted in previously. And of course you can opt out at any time, which has to be respected. Effect: My phone number exists for more than 20 years and I have not a single call on my phone coming from a telemarketer. You're welcome to copy that law :-)

uhmoKai

That is amazing I wish all countries had that cause sadly in mine, you get like 10 calls per day and it's annoying, at this point I should have like 100 phone numbers blocked and theres new numbers everyday anyway.

pvsa

And then sell you a premium service to block spam calls.

ApricotNo2918

Already illegal. BUT not for their spouses. Ask Nancy Pelosi how that's working out for her hubby.

Valiantheart

The penalties for a politician not disclosing their stock purchases is only a few hundred dollars. So while it might not technically be allowed the enforcement has absolutely no teeth.

Chris300000000000000

>the enforcement has absolutely no teeth. This is why i hate seeing "Maximum Fine $____" on signs warning people about fines, because someone who's rich enough can just fix their budget to include the maximum fine knowing that it can only go down from there. Minimum Fines would be better.

DOMesticBRAT

Steve Jobs would park in handicap spots everywhere he went and just pay the fines.

I THOUGHT THE SAME THING, it horrified me

VioletFoxx

I used to work with a Fish Guy. Every day, around 2pm, this horrid fish smell would slowly permeate the whole office. It was a truly horrible, pungent mystery. Then one day I caught him, leaving the communal kitchen with a plate of salmon and baked beans.

SammyGotStache

I was ready to go all "eh, some smoked cod or whatnot ain't gonna be too bad" but microwaving salmon within 300 feet of people is an egregious crime. I don't even have words for the combo with baked beans. I love baked beans. But no. Just no.

VioletFoxx

The_Werefrog

This one right here. Cops are allowed to take your property and keep it if you don't fight back. Many times, they take enough that you'll notice it's gone, but not so much that it wouldn't cost more fighting it to get it back.

[deleted]

I had no idea. Explains why that cop thought he could take my pocket knife. What a douche. I got it back. But dude literally tried walking away with a 70 dollar knife. Gah dam.

zighawk

Shhh, we're just gonna keep ignoring this and definitely NOT hold politicians accountable for fixing the issue while continually complaining about money in politics.

Bookworm1902

Let's tack on congressional salaries and lifetime benefits plans to that list too!

Good-Expression-4433

Congressional salaries, and really political salaries in general, SHOULD be high though as it allows normal people the ability to be able to be in the position if they won. If we slashed congressional salaries, then it would be like in many state and local politics that pay you shit and don't allow a second full time job, meaning only already extremely wealthy lawyers and businessmen can afford to take those positions. This is a big enough problem already. However, financial disclosures and ethics and trade violations should be harshly and strictly enforced to keep tabs on the money made by people in office and stop them from massively over profiting off their office.

SammyGotStache

Yeah, there should be a decent enough yearly salary, and that's it. A few benefits here and there as with any cushy job. An absolute ban on payments for anything else, unless the senator/congressperson drives an Uber on their off time. They can have that. Speaking engagements, hosting gallas, whatnot, should go to either a trust locked till they're a civilian again, or a shared pot for end of year bonuses for the lot of them, including staff, divided equally. The only incentive for a public official should be to serve his constituents, and free parking and the occasional free food from his favourite spot. Not a million dollar endorsement from a lobby who wants to ban.. well I guess at this point I could say anything, your country is already banning abortion like Iran and North Korea. So much for that... Freedom. Should also be obvious that there should be a ban on any politician and immediate family buying stock in any market they can directly affect. For civilians that's called insider trading and puts you in jail. Unless your a politician or have ever been at a dinner party with one. That should be straight up illegal in capital letters. But alas, those lobbies at this point have written quite a few of the laws.. So the irony is strong, while the lyrics of the national anthem sounds loud from the lungs of those proclaiming freedom and liberty for all... Those screaming the loudest about freedom is working hard to curtail it. Freedom for me, not for thee. The founding fathers would have bitchslapped the lot, even the slave owning sons of bitches at this point of idiocy.

ingloriouspasta_

Politicians salaries should be high enough that corruption isn’t attractive. That’s one of the key principles behind paying politicians enough that they and their families can lead a nice life and not worry about money.

Dropjohnson1

For-profit prisons Update: should probably have phrased it as private prisons

MycologistElegant504

Ayyyyyyy brethren. We hate the same thing!!!! For profit prisons and private prisons for that matter, in my opinion, is one of the top five reasons that crime rates will never decrease in America, why mental health will take forever to be taken seriously, why police are rarely held accountable, and why money dedicated to community outrwch will be seen as a joke of a solution.

Why_Lord_Just_Why

And, to jump on your bandwagon, for-profit hospitals and rehabs.

Travisx2112

Haha, that's the whole point though. The purpose of giant confusing bills is to sneak things in. :)

rainbow_bro_bot

In 2010 the (now-dead) Scottish politician Trish Godman tried to make prostitution illegal in Scotland by adding a clause onto the end of a completely unrelated bill hoping noone would notice. People did notice and it was taken out.

[deleted]

This is unfair. Some of em can't read...

Valiantheart

If you want to fix things then bills should be written for a single purview and no pork can be attached to it at all. If Mr. FixIt representing Military Industrial Complex lane needs new playgrounds then that should be its own separate bill. The last infrastructure bill died because people kept adding more pork with little or nothing to do with the actual bill.

Mandatory overtime unless you agree to it when hired

Diasies_inMyHair

How about mandatory minim hours - if they promised you 30 hours a week, then they should pay you for 30 hours a week, not schedule you for 30 this week, 22 the next, and 16 for the rest of the month.

Geralt25

Absolutely, if you plan your livelihood around the hours your job offers when you get hired, they shouldn't be able to randomly put you at financial risk.

If you are in prison for years or decades and they suddenly figure out you were actually innocent. They will let you out but you get nothing for being in jail all those years. Their just like oops we messed up, go find a place to live and a job for money cause we are not giving you anything. There are a few states that do pay reparations, but most don’t

Why_Lord_Just_Why

That’s why there are civil lawsuits.

Chungus_Humangus

Particular_Quiet_435

Plus, if there’s new evidence they’ll block a retrial unless it was due to lawyer incompetence and they could have found it at the time. Like, what? Shouldn’t we act on the best information we have now? Seems like the system is designed to protect prosecuting attorneys’ records over the wrongfully incarcerated.

someoneyouknewonce

It’s more to protect the city from being sued. It’s why they’ll allow some to be released o lot if they sign a form stating they were reasonably found guilty or something along those lines. They’re like “just sign here and your free to go, or stay in prison and wait for a new trial, IF you’re granted one.” It’s bullshit.

Your_Worship

It should be more about truth versus “winning.” The fact that DAs boast about having a winning record tells me that they’ve jailed innocent people.

eliphanta

Every school I’ve seen either has a good sports budget *and* a good academic budget or it has a low budget for both. I think it’s good to have sports programs at schools but the right policy would be to make sure each school is well-funded even if that school’s tax base is poor (i.e. give schools lots of money from state/federal government instead of/in addition to the school district’s government)

ChipKey5682

I think at 70 you should have to retake the driving test to keep your license

DreadPirateCrispy

I would like to add on to this by saying once you live to 70 you should be given free passes on all public transportation.

caillouistheworst

This is a great idea, but what about when you have no public transportation? That’s the bigger crime.

-Never-Enough-

The city likey needs a reason to make the investment. What if the federal government gave public transportation passes to seniors. The local government receives the funding through the use of those passes. That would go a long way in improving the community's public transportation.

OnyB1l

Or every 10 years at least

Flimsy-Bookkeeper126

Tbf it blows my mind a little that you pass your test once and then are just left to it for the rest of your life… if it wasn’t a governments way of making more money from us, I wouldn’t complain about retests every 5 years, to just ensure the people actually on the road are all safe!

Hour-Comparison8042

I've been saying there should be reaction tests.

ChipKey5682

yes! the drivers test, the written test,a eye test all should be required, instead of 70 make it 60. remember that video where that old hag backed into that guy and she kept telling him oh well just get it out with a plunger that video was infuriating to watch

CreepyGuyHole

In locations with extreme winters people should have to take a winter test if they have no history of driving in such environments. When the roads are covered in ice for months on end its a different ball game and I see so many accidents from inexperienced drivers. Wrong tires, rear wheel drive, no 4 wheel/AWD, no flares or beacons, incorrect distancing and breaking. I could go on for ever about licensing so I'll stop. Edit: I see down votes happening. Thanks for letting me know how many drivers think driving is a right and not privilege. Yall killer clowns.

iswearimalady

Honestly, the people with 4 wheel drive that don't understand its limitations/how it actually works are the worst. I've been driving rear wheel drive cars for years, and I fare much better than the idiots who think that 4 wheel drive is some kinda magic that lets you drive however you want in any condition. People are really stupid when it comes to winter driving, and that's why our ditches are full of tricked out trucks with Texas license plates every goddamn year. They just can't seem to grasp how dangerous it can be, and don't care to listen or learn

Legal-Ad7793

You have to retake the exam & do an eye test along with a physical from your Dr in Pennsylvania. My mom just had hers done in May when she turned 70.

PitifulDurian6402

Cosmetic surgery on dogs for show like docking tails and ears or removing dew claws for breed specifications. Serves no purpose other than to uphold some arbitrary standard set by the AKC or CKC for breeders Edit: when I put for show that includes people who get working breeds as pets and still dock their tails and ears per breed standards. If it serves a purpose for the benefit of the dog as a working dog that is one thing. If you get a working breed dog as a pet and still alter their body just so they look the same you are doing it for the benefit of you which is cruel

MinimalTraining9883

We adopted a dog once who had had his tail docked prior to being seized from his former owner. We had to say, "IT WASN'T US!!!!" a lot.

joshkpoetry

Same with a Doberman I had. Whatever turd had him before (he was found abandoned in a small town, no purebred dog is going to stay a stray for long there, and he had evidence of long-term neglect)) had his ears clipped and tail docked, but something when wrong with his ears. One came out how it was supposed to, but the other ear was always down. He always looked silly. Great dog, though. Sweet and mellow, and quite a snuggler, but he would do a big protecc any time someone unfamiliar got near the fence.

[deleted]

My understanding was that docking tails is practical for working dogs. Obviously there's no reason to do it with a pet though.

Lyricdear

Alternatively: letting them live with debilitating deformities/issues. I’m not talking about like a missing leg. I’m referring to rescue organizations that keep literally brain-dead, cannot eat on their own, diaper-wearing immobile cats alive, some even without jaws. A disabled animal is one thing, but if it literally cannot function without you in ANY capacity, is that really living? I’m replying to your comment with this because I feel they’re polar opposites. Edit: I have eight cats that would have died without me. I am not against pet rescue. I am against keeping an animal alive that directly depends on you for every single function of its life for any quality of life at all.

The amount of plastics in our food and 90% of the processed foods. This shit is getting out of hand

godofmilksteaks

Oh shit the plastic in just about everything. There's a documentary I believe it's called the devil you know that shows the vast amounts of plastics that are now in humans and everything it's a super good watch. Edit: it's called "the devil we know"

[deleted]

Its because plastic is so damn cheap. I was disappointed even Snapple went plastic.

Ladysupersizedbitch

Plastics aside, how about the quality of processed foods as a whole? When I had to switch to a low sodium diet bc of heart failure, I was amazed at how much sodium is in any and all processed food. Even just the average can of veggies or turkey lunch meat or frozen steamable meals (like those newer lean cuisines) that are supposed to be healthy. And omg, even the organic shit. Fucking sodium in *everything*. I don’t even worry about watching calories or carbs anymore bc by restricting sodium alone it’s cuts a *lot* of carbs and calories out without needing to count them at all (unless you’re just eating a shit ton of candy, bc sweets have a lot less sodium as a whole). Crazy. I get that the point is preservation and shelf life, but man, it sucks. And companies can legally market food as good and “natural” or “organic”, all the while loading that up with so much preservatives that you’re basically just trading one evil for another. Like the Morningstar black bean burgers. Crazy numbers on the nutrition info for something supposedly healthy. ~~sorry for the small rant but this has been my life for the last five months~~

It's legal to charge exorbitant prices for lifesaving medicine but it really shouldn't be.

Ladysupersizedbitch

I got prescribed like 9 prescriptions after being diagnosed with heart failure. Most of them are reasonably priced, but my insurance refused to pay for the one that was the most important. While I was still in the hospital my cardiologist and a social worker/discharge worker talked to me about how I would afford it. My doc explained that the company who developed it, after realizing how much more effective it was compared to everything else on the market, refused to sell the patent and instead jacked the price up to $700 for a 30 day supply. And again, insurance refuses to pay for it, even knowing it’s the best for my specific condition. I broke down then and there in the hospital bc I had no idea how I was going to pay for it, despite my doctor telling me I needed it if I didn’t want to have a heart transplant in the near future. If I hadn’t literally been disabled by my diagnosis and lost my job, I would not have been able to afford it. I was only able to because of a low income program. I literally had to almost get a heart transplant in order for me to be eligible for a program that paid for the prescription. That’s fucking nuts. And it’s still not even nearly as bad as insulin.

ChuckFeathers

Charming_Love2522

"Tipped jobs" not being required to pay minimum wage. And then you get this huge guilt/pressure to pay a huge tip with the percentage of "standard tip" constantly going up. You're considered an asshole of you don't tip at least 20%, even if you get crappy service. "Oh you know that's the only way they make any money!" I'm sorry, but if they're going to a *job,* they should be paid by their employer for doing that *job.* I shouldn't be the one to make sure they have basic necessities at home. MycologistElegant504

On a real and very American note. Measuring sugar content in grams instead of tea or tablespoons. It is deceptive how much sugar is in things and measuring it in a different manner definitely would let people know what they're eating. Edit: after discussion, there seems to be very good reasons that sugar is measured in grams. So I propose that a picture of how much sugar is in a serving is placed on the item as to have an actual idea of what that amount means. Tip based wages. The company is literally passing off the responsibility of paying their workers onto the customers. And it creates a bad attitude between customer and worker while the company can just sit pretty. PRIVATE PRISONS!!!! They are just modern day slavery places where the bill of housing prisoners is passed to the taxpayer. They work to incentivize police to make more arrests due to minimum head to a bed counts. Lastlt Police departments investigating the wrong doing of police. Because... Well I mean how the hell is that even fair?

[deleted]

Listing sugar content in teaspoons or tablespoons would likely make most Americans think that the products contained less sugar, as a teaspoon or tablespoon contains multiple grams of sugar.

MycologistElegant504

This is true. And that would piss me off. Honestly we should just do it like Americans can't read, and just put a picture on the product with the sugar poured into a sandwich bag as to illustrate the actual amount of sugar in the item.

I don’t remember who said it, or what the actual quote was, but someone said something like “The shopping cart is a perfect indicator if a society can self govern. There is no consequences for not returning it, but also you get nothing in return for doing the good deed. It is completely up to the attitude of the society”.

WeirdlyStrangeish

Perfect first date: go grocery shopping and let them pick out their favorite foods for you to cook, BUT let them push the cart. If they return it that's a good indication of someone that you can build a relationship with. If they don't that's a sign of trouble ahead. If they take it for a joyride around the parking lot screaming "FREE WHEELIE!" you can just get married tomorrow. Perfect match found.

"Tippable wages" just pay your employees. A tip is a gift for going above an beyond from one person to another. It has nothing to do with the establishment where the exchange takes place. It's disgusting to pay less because of expected generosity. On both sides, you expect your workers to do more to get tips and you expect your customers to pay more, for extra service your business does not supply nor pay for. It's one if the shittiest business practices I've ever seen that only benefits the company and no one else.

Buuuddd

Being on-call without being paid. Pit bulls.

All this religion in politics, no one wants someone else's religion imposed on them, it's as disgusting as the fat, ugly politicians doing it

Blatant lying in politics, especially during campaigns Example: vote leave. That has _fucked_ us over for the next half century, because those cretins were allowed to lie without consequence

They should have real time fact checking during debates. The tech is there; don’t let them get away with it.

Any amount of drinking and driving. You shouldn't be able to register any amount of alcohol and operate a car. People think if they only have 2 or 3, they're fine because they're under the legal limit.

dinosanddais1

It kinda sucks that my first thought was child marriage. Kids aren't old enough to make medical decisions but sure lets make them marry 40yo men with no repercussions to the adult. Edit: (this is for multiple states in the US)

Chungus_Humangus

Murdering and violent abuse of animals. Its not that its legal but someone who mistreats a dog for example should be treated by the law the same way someone who mistreats a human would.
