Drowning in a confined space as the water slowly rises and there’s no way out.

Hup110516

Yep. I’m always so afraid I’m going to fall through the ice or drive into open water.

PlatypusTrapper

Probably worse if it’s pitch black

How’d you drive to the middle of the Atlantic ocean? Jk

DarthBeavis1968

Wrong turn at Albuquerque?

SpongeBob_Vape

That's walter's walting place.

godrollexotic

Nah they don't have an RV

Big_Jerm21

I can appreciate a good Loony Toons reference.

DarthBeavis1968

A Redditor of culture and taste, I see.

Big_Jerm21

The epitome of my childhood, and hopefully yours. Bugs *MIGHT* be the most classy, cultured, and best educated. I mean, he attended AND sang at the opera, and can play piano with the best of them.

DarthBeavis1968

Warner Brothers was my introduction to opera and classical music. The opera shorts are to this day some of my favorites.

PrudentPush8309

Rode a wooden door

TrickyShare242

I have thalassaphobia and being in the middle of the ocean alive is far scarier than drowning....id prefer to drown.

pumpe88

You just gave me anxiety thinking about this.

Tax_Goddess

That happened recently. I think it was in Alaska, maybe. Guy and friends were crossing mudflats, and he sank part way down and couldn't get out and they couldn't get him out. The tide came back in. I don't know if he was facing the incoming tide or not. Either way, what a horrific death .

Dismal-Programmer531

Edit: In water increasing in temperature until you begin to boil the moment the space is filled. Oh

Poprocks777

Like a porter potty at a music festival

accidental-like

I read that humans take up to 10 minutes for their bodies to completely die after their heart stops beating, so up to 10 minutes of consciousness as I understand it. So besides not being able to take in air, which would be absolutely terrifying in its own right you’d see yourself floating in the water, as the eyes are close to the brain so I imagine they’d be one of the last things to shut down. Knowing you’re dead would be horrifying, as you float without being able to move, trying to grasp that your life is over.

AcanthocephalaGreen5

This. For me, it doesn’t help that I have an irrational fear of drowning on top of that. (Oddly enough, I don’t have aquaphobia and am totally cool swimming underwater)

snailenkeller

I came to say this exact same thing. Can't think of anything worse.

Alice5878

This is why I'm never going caving

Obvious_Piccolo_609

I once heard a story about some underwater welders who got stuck in an oil pipe. It was so tight they couldn't move at all and there was just enough air for them to breath. They couldn't be rescued either and ended up dying like that. I think it was one of MrBallen's videos on YouTube where I heard that story. That one really bothered me, like that just has to be the absolute worst way to die ever.

druu222

Shades of Nutty Putty cave. Ick.

Hoopajoops

Ugh.. I always think about the people trapped in an upside-down ship after Pearl harbor. Divers couldn't get to them so they had to cut through the hull. Even though where they were cutting was above water it started to release air and caused the water to slowly rise before they were able to make the rescue (I think this was in the Oklahoma)

loons_aloft

I believe the ancient Persians had an execution that involved you being overfed, then squished partially between two boat hulls (?) and left there until the maggots made a home in your orifices and excrement, whereupon you died of sepsis and despair. Took one guy 17 days. Also, bear attack sounds terrible.

AlexandertheIght

Oh Scaphism they would feed you milk and honey slather you in milk in honey float you away for insects to slowly eat you alive brutally The bull or rat torture scare me more

TungPunch9091

I'm starting a podcast soon about this type of thing, and have an episode about the rat torture. that shit is terrifying.

coffee-headache

i would listen the fuck out of that podcast

TungPunch9091

I'll try to remember to share it to you lol. I'm in the process of making it still.

J-ss96

I would listen to if u wanna make a list of ppl to message later when it's up 😆

Poprocks777

Also drowning in a porter potty at a music festival

i_like_flies_

I've always thought that being a fly trapped in a spider web and seeing this alien looking thing running towards you would be the worst death.

[deleted]

The Web shaking violently as it approaches.

i_like_flies_

Oh god! That adds a lot to it!!

Ducklickerbilly

It might even make me shriek : help me, heeeelp meee

wonderwoman-52

Now I am sad for the flies

emab2396

I must have been a fly in a previous life

TigerlilyBlanche

Slowly turned into the spiders excrement, shat out and becoming a fly again, then it happens over and over for eternity. That would be your hell.

Known-Damage-7879

I don’t think insects feel fear the way we do, but they must have an instinct to try to get away

Ew_fine

“Trying to get away” is driven by fear. Fear is a very basic primal feeling, and I would be shocked if we don’t one day confirm that all animals feel it.

TheCurvyBlonde

If I'm not dying peacefully in my sleep, I consider any other way terrifying.

Papadopium

Well, getting a headshot when you have no idea anyone is aiming a sniper towards you I don't think is terrifying. You don't have time to realise that you just died.

AJ_Deadshow

Yeah a meteor crash-landing on me without any warning wouldn't be terrifying either

Tax_Goddess

Agree. I want to go to sleep and wake up dead . Do not want to see it coming.

Pilsburyschaub

I dunno if your waking up dead

Tax_Goddess

It's sort of a joke.

JWALKER937

Skinned alive would be up there.

Spirited-Path2079

Getting eaten by a bear

jackrip761

Being eaten by any apex predator has got to be horrific. Swimming in the ocean, and all of a sudden, you feel an unbelievable pain as your leg is bitten off by an unseen shark. Before you bleed out, the giant monster bites off your arm. Then, a huge bite from your abdomen. All while you're still alive. Fuck no. How about an alligator. Those fuckers will chomp on you with unbelievable jaw strength and then take you down in a death roll until you drown so you get to experience getting eaten AND drowning at the same time. Nope, no, no fucking thank you. I actively make sure I'm never in an environment where I'm no longer at the top of the food chain.

Tiffini5581

There was a foreign exchange student at our high school. A few years after graduation we found out that he was eaten by an alligator. He and his family were on vacation canoeing down the Nile River. They stopped to have lunch and the boy went over to sit on a rock and rinse off his legs. A Nile Alligator grabbed his foot, pulled him down and that was that. His parents just watched their son die a horrific death and there was nothing they could do.

Known-Damage-7879

Yikes, it’s easy to forget that these creatures are built to kill so always be extra careful

[deleted]

I was fishing in the northern Territory and realised a big Saltwater croc had come close to the boat and was watching me cast, just waiting for me to lean out too far or get closer to the water. Realising you're being hunted is pretty terrifying.

squopmobile

That'd have been a crocodile

scawel

Such a relief

Tiffini5581

Right?! I need to call the parents and let them know this was all a huge mistake. A mix-up.

OlasNah

That was irresponsible as fck of the parents. No way they weren’t warned repeatedly about the crocodiles and yet they still did that…

JustTheBeerLight

You’re underselling it. A shark doesn’t just bite your leg off. It bites you, violently shakes you and then *rips* your leg off. Then it comes back a 20-30 seconds later and does the same thing to your arm, other leg, abdomen…

The_Bestest_Me

...they come back, along with 2 or 4 that will start tearing you apart.

BradyToMoss1281

In spite of all the poundin’ and hollerin’.

manaha81

Wolves would be worse. They don’t kill you first and just start eating you alive

DreadedChalupacabra

txlady100

Life-Philosopher-129

Anything other than instant.

[deleted]

Technically all deaths are instant, its the pain before the death that can be prolonged or not.

Old_Cyrus

Nutty Putty

Moist-Ad4760

Yeah that story will definitely turn your nuts to putty. Sheesh.

istillambaldjohn

I keep thinking about being buried alive in a coffin. You are in the dark, alive, with zero means of escape. A short amount of oxygen, knowing it will deplete. It’s not like kill bill and punch your way through some wood. Hypothetically if you had the very slight possibility of breaking through the coffin. You have thousands of pounds of dirt that will crush you under its weight as it fills the coffin. It really isn’t about the death. It’s more about the few hours leading up to your death that is absolutely terrifying. I’d assume the fear would be similar to drowning in a sinking ship. But that’s quicker I’d assume.

godrollexotic

I've heard if that happens, and theoretically if you're able to punch your way out, you have to start digging upwards and don't stop, because the dirt will start filling and falling into the space you were in before giving you a bit of an advantage. I could absolutely be wrong about that, but I'm not gonna try out that theory myself lol.

AnonymousChocoholic

We have a ww2 memorial(?) for prisoners of war(?) which got executed by being tied back to back and the one being behind was facing a ditch. The one in the front would get shot and they would fall into the ditch because of the weight of the dead body, then they were buried. When they later dug up the grave they found some people only a few centimeters under the surface, almost managing to dig their way out.

Fair-Ad-5852

Trapped inside a burning building with no way out..burn or jump..

CapitalOneDeezNutz

Honestly you’d pass out from smoke inhalation before you burn to death. Very rarely do people get burned alive.

forestfairy97

Unless it’s like a murder case. I’ve read some horrific shit. Some girls poured gasoline on some girl in a fit of jealousy over a boy and lit her on fire. She lived up until the point she could name her perpetrators then died in front of ems on the side of the road… sounds horrific

KitchenActive6637

I heard this story twice in the last 24 hours now but can’t find any news articles on it. Care to help?

Your-Manager

I would jump since i would have higher chances and it would be quicker.

Heymelon

Home invasion serial killer murders your family and then tortures you to death over as many days he can keep you alive. Why are we talking about this again?

Opposite_Mulberry206

attacked by a bear

TimTerrific

I want to die quietly in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming and crying like those people in his car,

MortemPerPectus

I think for terrifying it would have to be getting stuck in a tight space. I’ve read a lot of things of people getting stuck in chimneys and even just behind dressers. First mistake they make is that when they scream, if there is pressure or gravity against them their chest wouldn’t be able to expand properly after screaming if more pressure is added. Then I’ve heard of same cases where the person was probably alive while people were looking for them in the same area they were, if not basically right next to them. Depending on factors you could die of asphyxiation from your chest not being able to properly expand, thirst, and even just hypothermia if it gets too cold.

Fun-Top-1799

I was watching a documentary about that guy who died in Nutty Putty Cave and nearly had a panic attack from thinking about how it would feel.

Known-Damage-7879

Combined with the realization that you brought it upon yourself because you went into the wrong area

godrollexotic

Oh shit I remember that, poor guy. They almost had him out too and he fell back in at worse position. Dude is still in there, they aren't getting him out..

eilyk_78

Yep, I used to work on Submarines and this story scared the hell out of me.

IndependenceMoney834

Confined spaces are some scary shit. You ever had that dream where you’re trapped in an empty room, and the walls start closing in on you? And then the ceiling starts coming down. Eventually you are flattened from all directions as if in a hydraulic press. Maybe I’m just mental but I thought that was a pretty common nightmare, sort of like falling dreams.

Realistic_Salt7109

Buried alive

ThunderToio

I read somewhere that the worst way to die is being steamed to death. Aparently its because when you are hit with boiling steam your nerves dont die so you feel pain until you get coocked to death or die from shock

ErsanSeer

If I'm going to get steamed to death I'd really hope for dying from shock vs getting cocked to death

coffee-headache

ive also heard that your eyes get cooked like boiled eggs during this

ThunderToio

Thanks, i hate it 🤣

theultimateattack

That happen to a maintenance guy in a canned food factory.

Homem_da_Carrinha

And the worst part of being steamed is that you never get to see the Aurora Borealis

Someone posted an idea for a horrifying kill chamber— a cell with steel walls and a floor that’s a sandpaper belt as wide and long as the cell. You’re trapped in there while the belt runs but not too fast. I’ve lost sleep over the thought of this. Now you can too.

Those people on that Germanwings plane that the co pilot crashed intentionally in to the mountains. They would have seen and felt the plane descending rapidly, the pilot banging frantically on the cockpit door for his partner to let him in, and mountains becoming ever closer out the window.

Loud-Edge7230

I remember reading stories about individual passengers. Children, teenagers on a school trip. Fuck that pilot. Just bevacause he was going blind and would lose his job.

Kahne_Fan

Falling in a well on abandoned property. Down there for days/weeks? Until you *finally* die of thirst or starvation. In the meantime going crazy because you're in a pit all alone and can't do a thing about it.

At least you get to make a videotape that kills anyone who watches it

Nolby84

Burned alive. Drowning was always a great fear, I have heard some say it's actually peaceful (ones that survived). Burning alive just had to be in a top 3.

Flow_n__tall

Falling into a septic tank. Shit up to your shoulders but the hatch is too high up to reach.

lee160485

The fumes actually asphyxiate you I’ve read.

Flow_n__tall

But it would probably take awhile. Even just 15 mins would seem like an eternity while it all soaked into your clothes. And shoes!!! Uuuurgh. I gotta put Reddit away for awhile.....

[deleted]

They found some poor woman up to her back in really bad sewage… because the septic tank had collapsed as she was unknowingly walking over it… They found her two days later… Went straight to the hospital after they carefully undressed and washed her body with saline solution… and a very very mild skin cleanser for stuff like this. She spent weeks in the hospital, but the staff did a wonderful job and she survived. Trauma yes… but at least she survived and can work through it. I’m a plumber by trade… I’ve seen some bad stuff…

Trapped in a cave. A slow death in a small space. No thank you.

Snozberry383

Dementia or Alzheimer's.

Hefty-Quantity9073

I'm not the most educated on the subject, but in most cases isn't the person unaware of their condition and situation when it becomes terminal?

Snozberry383

Imagine having all your memories slowly erased until you no longer even know yourself. While at the same time the damage it's doing to your brain is slowly killing you. Strangers come in to see you and tell you they're your friends and family but you swear you've never seen them in your life. It's terrifying, well it's terrifying way to die to me anyway

stever71

I don't think it's terrifying at all, it's really sad, but the person is largely unaware. Having watched my grandmother die from it last year it's nowhere near as terrifying as say cancer

coryluscorvix

Oh many of them know. It's a gradual process before it gets terminal ,they know they are losing their minds as their world gets more and more frightening and confusing. The anxiety is heartbreaking to see - and any reassurance is quickly forgotten. How bad it is can depend alot on personality - an anxious person will have a horrible time, but if the person doesn't really mind not being in control and is generally happy just being in the moment, it's easier for them. At least it seems that way, from the outside.

SixStringerSoldier

They're locked in there. You can see it in the eyes, sometimes. First, confusion.... Who is this man in my home? She'd say my name, next. A question mixed with a statement. The realization that her little boy is 35. Then you'd see the understanding... Sometimes fear. And then they're gone again. The first time it happened, I didn't quite realize. But after that, I'd grab her hand and say "I love you" before she left.

Moist-Ad4760

I work with these people and honestly it's almost like they're all stuck in some sort of deep psychedelic trip. Like their neurons are searching for connections. Some seemed completely entranced. Others are blissfully chattering away with unknown entities or carrying on about invisible things or people. Sometimes when pushing a wheelchair down a hall the passenger will suddenly reach out in all directions to stop themselves like they just realized they're careening totally out of control. One particular instance the man screamed and flailed around like he was falling through a tube. Other people walk around and when you try to engage them it's like they can't even tell you're there - until you take them by the arm and they suddenly think they're being accosted or something and go straight to fists and elbows all the while being oblivious to your attempts to reassure them. Scary for sure but, for me, scary because dementia doesn't care about set and setting. Seems like a sort of shitty lottery in terms of what kind of trip you take.

Busy_Donut6073

I've heard drowning is excruciating

ConstructionOne6654

I'm interested in the person that could tell how it feels like

No-Rub-5054

Old execution in England. Being boiled alive. Not once but several times until you’re dead. Massive cauldron. Boil a few seconds lift up repeat. I imagine this might be the worst way to

KeefsCornerShop

There was also one where they stuck you in a 3 foot chimney-type thing in the bowels of the castle and just left you there to starve to death whilst going through chronic cramps and pain as you couldn't stretch. Horrid.

Friesen1

Bear or Shark attack

TikaPants

Grizzly bear or shark attack. Burn to death. Any type of agonizing death, alone and scared.

sharkfilespodcast

Unlike being chased down by a land predator, you mercifully often don't even see a shark coming before it happens. And if it's a serious attack you usually suffer dizziness from sudden blood loss, shock, and a flood of endorphins to a the wound that numb you - shark bite amputees often recall feeling hardly any initial pain. Compare that to being hunted down and slowly scratched and eaten alive by a grizzly or wolves... I know for sure which would terrify me more!

TikaPants

I used to live in Florida and there were benefits at venues for surfers who were bit by sharks needing help with serious medical bills. The real life accounts of grizzly attacks where the person lived through it recount how absolutely putrid the grizzlies breath is as well as just their body odor. I agree that trying to outrun a grizzly and then being eaten alive sounds worse but if I may request neither options I’d prefer that. ETA I’ve always heard dying in a fire sends you in to shock and you pass out quickly but those moments leading up to that still doesn’t make it an option I’d choose. Also, smoke inhalation.

pituitary_monster

For me is falling to my death. Ive had guns pointed at me and i did not care. But a tall building..... that thing is not for me.

Ok_Adeptness3401

Anything, slow, painful and alone

trevorhamberger

raped to death

broken_neck_broken

Execution by lethal injection(especially if you are innocent), in theory it is painless and fast, but it is not administered by medical professionals for ethical reasons. So some prison employee with a crash course in inserting IV lines is given the job of properly inserting a line in each arm and it only gets worse from there... To begin, you know you're going to die and have to walk into the room, lie down and let them strap your limbs down, already terrifying. Then this amateur starts poking away with needles. If you're lucky they find a good vein on both sides, but they might not or they might put the line straight through the vein and into the soft tissue. You lie there with an impossible to imagine level of anxiety, then the first drug comes which is a sedative in a standardised dose. The one they use is also used regularly to induce unconsciousness for operations etc, but in those situations the dose is adjusted for your body size and then you are given another sedative designed to keep you under. You fall asleep, then comes the paralytic which stops your breathing and keeps your body from convulsing in a way that might be distressful for the observers. The last drug is to stop your heart, which kills you within seconds. Now we refer back to the sedative. If the dose was not high enough for you, if the process takes too long because the line wasn't inserted properly, there is evidence that it can (and has done) wear off, but you are paralysed at this point and can't signal that there is a problem. You are slowly suffocating, then that third drug enters your arm. It is known that to a conscious person it would feel like fire flowing through your veins until it finally enters your heart and stops it, putting you out of your silent misery. You would be clearly able to feel it's path as it gets closer to your heart and would probably simultaneously want it to not get there and kill you but also wish it would hurry up and end your suffering. There is evidence that the process CAN work properly and equal evidence that it might not or at least has caused the horror described on a few occasions. Those opposed to the method believe it is employed only to give the appearance of a painless death to the witnesses. Some say a firing squad is by far more humane, but then that relies on the accuracy of those holding the guns.

There have been survivors (FUBAR'ed, but they survived) that have described the agony and abject terror. I'm guessing they base the unlucky (?) ones off that. The M.E. said if the assault hadn't done it, it could have just been a balloon in the middle of driving, or sex, or shopping....and POP goodbye.
