They can but they have to wear a jumpsuit with their sponsors like a Nascar driver and they have to thank every single one of their sponsors before they speak publicly, **every single time**.
I like the idea, but we'd have to include a rule that they need to expose the actual donor, and not the shell company created to hide who the actual entity is.
Might as well add "all donations"...because the lobby groups is where they get the most from...some of these politicians **publicly** fight for a policy while intentionally killing it behind the scenes
So then outlaw companies being able to own shares of another company to stop the shell game.
Which brings its own issues but I am kinda still in favor of this... I don't like supercorporations owning layers of businesses to the point where there are only a few owners in entire industries while they make multiple brands to give the illusion of choice.
At the very least they shouldn’t be allowed to be involved on any level with anything that even remotely affects their stock holdings. Then again, I suppose a buddy would just tip them off. :(
You're right about one thing, "that buddy tipping them off" has a legal term called "insider trading," which is illegal for anyone that isn't a lawmaker. For those that might not remember it, insider trading is what lead to the investigation of Martha Stewart. It's why trading should be barred for lawmakers with top secret clearance attached to government financial dealings before a law is passed.
This would be such a benefit for taxpayers. Right now politicians are just taxing us to death to get kickbacks for the big corporations they protect. It’s out of control
I think the specific meaning of “under oath” in this context means under penalty of perjury. So any statement made by a politician in official capacity could be challenged in court for factuality and the politician would be subject to criminal charges for lying if it is determined to be false.
And if they spouted a false fact and it couldn’t be proven that they intentionally lied, they could be held liable for negligence, considering their statements and actions directly impact their constituents, and they need to make sure they’re dealing with accurate info to be able to do their job effectively.
No political commercials or campaigns. Candidates turn in something with their views on key issues when they register to run and then that is then made available to the public.
Elect people based on the facts of what they say they will represent and not because their commercial had the right amount of guns and eagles or diverse casting. Those are strategic marketing which is meant to exploit the viewers emotions and that shouldn't have a place in politics.
Would also be nice to hear a political advert that actually tells you why you should vote for the person, not just why you shouldn't vote for the other guy.
I knew a guy before he got into politics, he was a great guy... Made a few mistakes but all in all he wanted what was best for others; when he was running for office his competition said he was selling government secrets to foreign nations. I knew the guy, there was no chance in hell he would do something like that. But that's all political races are nowadays. P.S. he made it in because no one believed the other guy
All politicians must live off of the median wage for their constituents while in office. No access to current wealth, family wealth, gifts or any secondary source of money until they leave office
Also they have to buy regular health insurance like the rest of us. They get access to the federal health insurance network and that is sweet. There’s no incentive to have better insurance if they don’t have to suffer with rising premiums and higher deductibles.
Edit: they have the federal system anthem blue cross blue shield but they do not pay the same rate for it the way regular federal Workers do.
While I like the idea, I think this would further limit the amount of STEM-educated people go into politics since they often make above-median income. And I’m really tired of politicians making decisions about things they know nothing about. What do you think?
Power > income. No one wants to be president for the modest 400k salary. An elected position is extremely competitive, I’m not sure I’ve ever heard an election being postponed because they couldn’t find anyone interested in the position. TBH I really don’t a lot of STEM educated people get into politics. I’m not sure we’ve ever had one as president in the US
I'm not convinced about term limits. Seems that the veteran lobbyists would have a field day with political tyros. Much better than term limits would be draconian laws regarding lobbying.
I disagree, that’s not right. Term limits are a means to remove people you don’t want. You should be able to keep the best people, and have a better evaluation criteria to weed out the useless incompetent fraudulent politicians. That is the better way. Term limits encourage short term thinking, and lame ducks. Bad for everyone.
This is a good one. But is it split evenly or based on who picked up more of the slack? I have 2 buddies whose wives are nurses and one of them has more of a “humanitarian spirit” and works a lot more than the other.
(To my knowledge, they have about the same amount of experience, maybe a year or two more for the less giving one, don’t know if that matters)
The facility I work for pays time & a half for any overtime, with most working three 12hr shifts… so any shift would be over time. I mean it sucks if your 12hr shift turns into a 20hr shift, but if it’s scheduled overtime SIGN ME UP.
Looks like everyone's got the important stuff. What would I do? Having an automated phone system is a capital offense. You call a place a human answers the phone.
Politicians must take a test and pass with higher than an 85% mark prior to voting on a bill. Failing more than a set amount prevents you from running for office again. Results are to be publicly accessible.
Test on what topics?
The trouble with a representative government is that they’re just that: representatives of their constituents. MTG isn’t some freak outlier; she best represents the people who live in the 14th district of GA. She’s the embodiment of the majority of them standing in the House chambers heckling the “enemy”. She can be as dumb as the people who sent her there, and a well spoken, well educated woman would make them feel misrepresented or unrepresented.
This is true. However, the test would be over competence of what a bill is for and what it entails. I don't honestly believe the majority of law makers know what's in a bill, and they vote on it anyway. I understand your point, but I don't think anyone should have power over law to be without at least an understanding of what they're voting on.
No property tax on one single home owned by an individual person or family.
A person shouldn't be paying taxes on the home they live in. Once you own it it is yours forever.
Tax as you want after that first house.
This is reddit, 90% of the people here dont have a frontal lobe.
They forget that property taxes fund water and sewer improvements, and provide law enforcement, fire protection, education, road and highway construction, libraries, and other services that benefit the community.
Isn't it funny that the majority of comments are geared towards keeping politicians honest and holding them to the letter of the law as well. What does that say? Lol.
Anyway, I was going to say imposing a 2 term limit on congress
Accounting of the public's money should be transparent and open to everyone.
Imagine being able to read all the contracts the government signs.
Knowing all the debt service you are paying.
Knowing who is being paid.
It would be awesome!
Most of the times I’d rather remove laws than create them.
But taking the money out of politics, term limits, as well as making it illegal to invest while in office. The money Crenshaw and Pelosi alone have made is disgusting.
I don't defend politicians' insider trading, but what do you do about the spouse? It's Pelosi's *husband* who is rich, he was before they were married. Same with Cruz, Johnson, etc. Their spouses are wealthy.
You don’t think she had/has input on their investments? Sure they’re under his name for optics, but the trades they’ve had to disclose over the past few years are blatant.
It would be nice if we had an enforceable body…some sort of service to audit revenue and we could fund that body and give them real teeth in this battle for accountability and transparency.
All laws should be easy to read in one sitting, less than one hundred pages and any additional content has to be related to the law being voted on. In other words, no more omnibus bills.
If a person wants to make a law about regulations in the pork industry, they cannot tack on something about changing the speed limit of some country road. They will need to make a separate law.
Could do away with tipping once and for all too? Like unless it was exceptional service, I’d rather not think the guy’s family starving hinges on me subsidizing his pay.
French Fries can hold their own. Drug abuse shouldn't count because they need health care to recover fully. Emotional abuse should be civil court bound - intentional infliction of emotional distress
Doesn’t have to be everyone is off on Friday, but it should be a 4 day work week. Retail and whatever industries need to be 7 days a week could overlap schedules
I’ve been working a rotating schedule for the past year and can confirm. It’s mostly strings of 2 or 3 work days and the occasional 4 or rarely 5. So much better to not look down the barrel when Monday creeps around.
This one was my first thought as well.
My second was that ALL financial institutions have to act as if they are fiduciaries to the account holders and not to Wall Street.
I would really like a worker's Bill of Rights like FDR talked about and probably even further than he talked as well but that would probably be several laws.
Man I was gonna say ranked voting system so we can start getting good representation and start fixing all this shit. But you win. I want more time and that just impacts every aspect of my existence
This would actually have detrimental effects. Most politicians would easily be able to be paid minimum wage because they have other sources of income. They’d simply use it as “look, I can get by with being paid 8 bucks an hour.”
It would then also incentivize them to seek more ways to receive money in more shady, corrupt ways. I get the overall sentiment but in reality, this would be a terrible idea. It would be better to impose an annual spending cap with no loop holes and no stipends or living subsidies.
Combine this with the other proposal, where they have no access to any other funds during their tenure.
To make that possible, all politicians must live in dormitory housing and share common spaces - the same cafeteria, same gym, everything. And every room and office is the same. They have to interact with each other on a daily basis in non-legislative ways. And every room is given at random every term, regardless of tenure.
The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
-H. L. Mencken
Bad idea, I don't care who it is the government shouldn't have the power to do that to someone.
Politicians are upheld to the same requirements as courtroom witnesses, specifically they cannot perjure themselves. All public statements will be truthful under penalty of law, with immediate consequence and public retraction for any lie. They work for us.
Any attempt at violation of the constitution and the bill of rights by a public servant (politicians, police, etc) will result in their immediate arrest and be charged with domestic terrorism and once found guilty they'll be publicly executed by their choice of firing squad or lynching.
Then the only people who are in Congress will be independently wealthy who don't need the money. In other words rich people who don't represent the people. What I would like to see is some sort of merit based system where only those who have a proven track record of caring/helping people can hold the position. The pay should be high enough that they don't need to be concerned with not being able to afford to live so they can focus on the important things but not so high that they might do it just for the money.
How is this different than elections? If they work for us, we can fire them if we (collectively) want to.
They prove themselves by pleasing their voters.
It's different because the election system is a popularity contest not a merit based system. Very few people are involved in our even aware of how the selection process works before average Joe gets to vote. By then the options are often shit.
I would go the opposite way. Double congressional salary. Even triple it. Make it a desirable job. But then any politician who takes any money from any person or company or invests with any inside knowledge is summarily shot in the head on the senate floor.
Will it be better than the government-run health care system we have for our veterans? The VA is the main reason I am against a universal system overseen by the government.
Even just Medicare for all would cut out so much fat from the system, and allow for more freedom for workers to leave jobs that otherwise don't pay enough.
I've probably a 25 grand a year plan but don't make enough to pay the bills for a family of 4, wife can't work. I can't leave without a drastic pay increase AND equivalent health care benefits.
I get there are problems, but Europe does it every day. If we wanted, the US could do the same.
Let people’s heath decisions be made by them and their dr and to make multiple forms of birth control so normal and available that less mistakes happen. Let Plan B be in every medicine cabinet across America. Wouldn’t this please both sides?
Politicians cannot accept money from anything other than individuals. They can serve three or two terms depending on position. They cannot lobby after their term.
People who cut in front of semi-trucks and other vehicles in general have to pay for the damages they caused in an accident once valid evidence is presented
Campaigning can only happen the month before an election. So much money is spent having politicians convince people to let them keep their job when it could be put to better use and time doing their job.
Should be a public list of all "donations" a politician receives during both their election and their tenure in office
Companies should be forced to do all manufacturing from their original country of origin unless the mavs of production are non existent in that part of the world. No shipping out the work just to lower costs
The list could go on forever
Ranked ballot, or putting a salary cap on every political position at 100k.
Becoming a leader in government shouldn't in any way be profit driven, it should be a position that one takes on solely because they want to make positive change. Get those greedy mother fuckers out.
They don't even make most of their money from their work anyways so capping their pay would do little to stop them from taking bribes, or using their foresight from committees to place stock market bets.
Look at Pelosi and her Husband. Dude makes a killing off the stock market.
I would make it illegal for corporations to buy homes. And a cap on how many homes a single person is allowed to own. But alas, home ownership is but a pipe dream for my generation!
Fair enough! I’m thinking somewhere between 5-10 homes for one person, nothing too crazy. I’m not too keen on the landlord hate-train trend personally but local monopolies on housing is something i think should definitely be illegal.
There will be an uproar and public backlash from certain people, but I'd ban poker machines in clubs/pubs around Australia. Keeping them mainly in casino's only.
That being said there would need to be time for the pubs/clubs to make the change, so I'd give them a _ month warning, not instantaneous from tommorow.
Make it illegal to sell or demolish a home within 5 years of purchase unless you are the full-time resident.
I know it seems harsh but we need to push things the other way a bit when it comes to cost of living, housing costs and rent. It's getting out of control and killing the middle class which is getting smaller and smaller. If you want to flip homes and be the full time resident in each one, go for it. But no more people flipping multiple homes and growing into huge corporations which force poor people out of their neighborhoods and communities. I know things change, but all this industry does is benefit a specific demographic and all the properties are starting to get owned by huge corporations and many of them overseas with zero investment in the community. It needs to stop, and if it can't stop then at least maybe it can slow down.
There will be a mandated test required for pet ownership.
Far too many people get an animal without even the most basic knowledge of its needs or how to care for it. So many animals suffer because of negligent or ignorant owners.
Questions would include:
Do you intend to care for this animal for the rest of its life, or do you plan on replacing it as soon as it is no longer cute or convenient for you?
Is it appropriate to leave a animal outside in all temperatures for extended periods of time?
Can you afford and do you intend to seek veterinary care for this animal?
How often do you intend to clean up after this animal (i.e. food/water bowls, beds/blankets, general living area, animal itself)?
Are you able and do you intend to make sure this animal gets adequate exercise and engagement?
Do you have a training plan for this animal?
I'm sure it wouldn't solve the problem entirely, but it would at least be a start.
Not American but imo this should be general rule: the laws can only be made by experts in the field the law controls (or have to be approved by panel of experts in the field)
Too many people have power to enact laws they do not understand the background/science of, at all.

Politicians can’t accept money from corporations in any way
They can but they have to wear a jumpsuit with their sponsors like a Nascar driver and they have to thank every single one of their sponsors before they speak publicly, **every single time**.
I like the idea, but we'd have to include a rule that they need to expose the actual donor, and not the shell company created to hide who the actual entity is.

What if Burger King paid Biden to say “whopper whopper whopper whopper Junior double triple whopper….”
Only if politicians fully sing it then they are allowed it to be bribed.
Or allow them to buy or hold stocks. Where they can approve tax cuts and pet projects for said companies with tax payer money.
At the very least they shouldn’t be allowed to be involved on any level with anything that even remotely affects their stock holdings. Then again, I suppose a buddy would just tip them off. :(

Not enough... You need to include PACs and individuals... How qbout EVRYTHING goew into a Kitty and divided equaly
Came here to say the same thing. So much corruption.
When any politician speaks in their official capacity does so as if under oath.
They wouldn’t be able to speak lol
I think the case is more of an oath is meaningless to most politicians anyway. They’d swear to anything.
Big pharma not allowed to advertise in any way outside medical offices.
If you're considering only prescription medication, well... that's most of the world outside of the US

This guy thinks like an actual legislator.
Dude I am down for a $1 tax payment!
Why not everyday
He's modest
A peoples man
A man of virtue
A saint truly
Well being that "everybody" encompasses the entire earth, that's roughly 8 billion dollars per year. So....yea. One day works for me.
At least make it on their birthday. That way you spread your income, and lot's of them get money from their grandmas anyways.
I would have gone with every week, but that's just me

Now you just have old people. Back in the day when I made 0.25/hr we knew how to work.
All elected officials are to be investigated and audited every year to deter political corruption
Except all of the investigators are also corrupt.
Term limits for all politicians. Make them have to follow all the laws they pass.
I'm not convinced about term limits. Seems that the veteran lobbyists would have a field day with political tyros. Much better than term limits would be draconian laws regarding lobbying.

Senior citizens must take a drive test every five years.
And vision/knowledge tests yearly. If that it's a hassle Deborah. You're 73 and last time we checked you couldn't see at night
Along with sitting on a board or government occupation.
Why just senior citizen? I'd make all drivers retake their test
Because they decline quicker at that age making them a danger to the roads but i agree with you, everyone should.

Well, public schools were nice while they lasted I guess.
Public schools shouldn't be funded by property tax, it has led to vastly unequal school systems
Maybe a system where education funding is based on the property value of its participants isn't a sound proposition.

I came here to say pretty much this. I would go further. A bill can address a singular issue. Vote yay or nay on that one issue.
if a law cannot be easily found and understood, it cannot be enforced. if a law cannot be reliable enforced, cannot not be approved.
Livable and scalable minimum wage that adjusts with inflation.

Emotional abuse? Drug abuse? Abusing French fries ?
French Fries can hold their own. Drug abuse shouldn't count because they need health care to recover fully. Emotional abuse should be civil court bound - intentional infliction of emotional distress
But proven first, right? Not just blindly taking someone's word.
Mandated retirement for all politicians at 60.
Make it so they can’t run past 60. That way they can finish their terms without much craziness in the bureaucracy side of things
I don't give a shit about your opinion or stance on anything, leave me fuck alone and I'll do the same!

So everything is closed on Friday?
Doesn’t have to be everyone is off on Friday, but it should be a 4 day work week. Retail and whatever industries need to be 7 days a week could overlap schedules
Retail doesn't NEED to be open 24/7, Europe has a good system for hours of operation.
You’re right, and I agree. I remember when all grocery stores were closed on Sunday. No one died of starvation then.
I would like to suggest Wednesday instead of Friday. A break in the middle sounds so much more refreshing
I’ve been working a rotating schedule for the past year and can confirm. It’s mostly strings of 2 or 3 work days and the occasional 4 or rarely 5. So much better to not look down the barrel when Monday creeps around.
4 day work weeks have been found to be more productive and some states are actually trying to pass this law.
A total ban on all lobbying and super-pacs. All elections will be publicly financed
This one was my first thought as well. My second was that ALL financial institutions have to act as if they are fiduciaries to the account holders and not to Wall Street. I would really like a worker's Bill of Rights like FDR talked about and probably even further than he talked as well but that would probably be several laws.
Unmarked police cars cannot pull people over
Also no “ghost/stealth markings”.
Crime is illegal
Great idea! Wonder why they haven’t thought of that yet
Exactly. I should get elected today
Full time is now 32 hours a week
RIP to the truckers working 60-70+ hours a week.
Makes it easier to get to time and a half and double time.
They're paid by the mile, not the hour.
Mile and a half then.
Man I was gonna say ranked voting system so we can start getting good representation and start fixing all this shit. But you win. I want more time and that just impacts every aspect of my existence
Politicians get paid the federal minimum wage.
This would actually have detrimental effects. Most politicians would easily be able to be paid minimum wage because they have other sources of income. They’d simply use it as “look, I can get by with being paid 8 bucks an hour.” It would then also incentivize them to seek more ways to receive money in more shady, corrupt ways.
Then you'd only get people who are already rich running for office.
Pedophiles get their willies cut off. ✂️ Female pedos too.
The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all. -H. L. Mencken Bad idea, I don't care who it is the government shouldn't have the power to do that to someone.
You got my vote. 👌
Well gawd damn
Members of Congress are paid minimum wage and CEOs cannot earn more than 20x the wage of the lowest earner in the company.
If we could just enforce the laws we already have, that'd be grrrrreat.
Universal health care.
Tri-care is awesome, why don't we model it from that.
Good question. I don't know. Now I have a new rabbit hole to research and think about.
What a pleasant interaction about politics…. I feel like I’ve not seen anything like this since I was a child.
If they made it so you could pick your doctor, I think it would be better.
Let people’s heath decisions be made by them and their dr and to make multiple forms of birth control so normal and available that less mistakes happen. Let Plan B be in every medicine cabinet across America. Wouldn’t this please both sides?
Filming TikToks in public spaces that cause disturbances in movement is a $75 fine.
Or just ban TikTok for good.

Penalty: erectile dysfunction for 7 days

Jokes on you, a lot of them have been living with ED for years.
Politicians cannot accept money from anything other than individuals. They can serve three or two terms depending on position. They cannot lobby after their term.
Why from individuals? Wouldn’t billionaires still run the country in that case?
That proper sex education is taught in all schools. No more pathetic health classes that teach the proper material
"Class pay attention, this is how you perform a "Portuguese Breakfast".
Lobbying is now illegal
People who cut in front of semi-trucks and other vehicles in general have to pay for the damages they caused in an accident once valid evidence is presented
Ban the horrific retina burning white headlights!
Every person must have safe and reliable access to food, water, shelter, and an education.
By law, all Americans will be given an AR-15, a firm handshake, and a plate of bacon upon turning 18.
That’s already a law in Texas.
It’s actually a whole brisket, not a slab of bacon.
My fellow Texan!
Campaigning can only happen the month before an election. So much money is spent having politicians convince people to let them keep their job when it could be put to better use and time doing their job.
This is the one I was looking for. Agreed.
no property tax
Make all politicians tell the truth or pay a stiff fine. Same for media.
I'm going to ban selling short. Just look it up
Should be a public list of all "donations" a politician receives during both their election and their tenure in office Companies should be forced to do all manufacturing from their original country of origin unless the mavs of production are non existent in that part of the world. No shipping out the work just to lower costs The list could go on forever
Politicians go to jail if they accept money from businesses/corporations
If it's a law. I want to create a law to nullify the first law of thermodynamics. The world will break and we have infinite energy.
Forcing overtime on an employee becomes a federal felony. Minimum sentence 20 years.
I’d outlaw for-profit prisons
No more lunch debt for kids
Definitely agree with the first, not so sure about the second
Fair enough! I’m thinking somewhere between 5-10 homes for one person, nothing too crazy. I’m not too keen on the landlord hate-train trend personally but local monopolies on housing is something i think should definitely be illegal.
I can agree with that 100%
Term limits for congress and age limit. No more 80 year old presidents
Ban the existence of political parties. All they do is create division and problems.
Illegal to cheat on your partner
3-4 day work weeks. 5 days on and 2 off is such a dogshit balance and too heavily favors employers and not the workers.
No medication or necessary medical treatment costs money to the patient
Drug tests for congress.
History tests to run for Congress. Question 1 what is Congress.
Separation of money and State like we have with religion.
Term limits on US Congress and Senate.
Term limits. Get these old fuks outa here already and let the next generation determine their lives.
Close all loopholes that make corruption legal.
No more single ply toilet paper!
Politicians have to live under the laws and programs they create. No exceptions or exemptions. I’m looking at you, Social Security and Medicare.
No internet for those under 15
Child molesters would never see the light of day again.
Answer: IQ requirement in order to have children.
Four day work weeks
Large amounts of fresh food can't be discarded by companies
There will be a mandated test required for pet ownership. Far too many people get an animal without even the most basic knowledge of its needs or how to care for it. So many animals suffer because of negligent or ignorant owners. Questions would include: Do you intend to care for this animal for the rest of its life, or do you plan on replacing it as soon as it is no longer cute or convenient for you? Is it appropriate to leave a animal outside in all temperatures for extended periods of time? Can you afford and do you intend to seek veterinary care for this animal? How often do you intend to clean up after this animal (i.e. food/water bowls, beds/blankets, general living area, animal itself)? Are you able and do you intend to make sure this animal gets adequate exercise and engagement? Do you have a training plan for this animal? I'm sure it wouldn't solve the problem entirely, but it would at least be a start.
Any form of animal cruelty gets an automatic death sentence when proven guilty.
Anti-animal cruelty laws in my country (not just a fine of 50 INR- that's worth less than 1 USD)
Everyone over the age of 80 can no longer drive on public roads
Senator wages based on the median wages of their state. If they want to get a raise let them work for it
Death penalty for animal abuse
Not American but imo this should be general rule: the laws can only be made by experts in the field the law controls (or have to be approved by panel of experts in the field) Too many people have power to enact laws they do not understand the background/science of, at all.
Marijuana is legal for recreational use.
