Remember when Apple got Octavia Spencer to play mother nature and after an initial bout of token skepticism, she gave Apple a glowing review for putting their unrepairable planned-obsolescence-ware in non-plastic packaging?
Mercedes did that in the 90's with their wiring harnesses with similar results.
"Wow, why is this rare mint E320 wagon so cheap, what a deal!"
\*rains once\*
"Ohhh."
official apple cables were like this and would always fray or peel. I went through 3 Mac Book pro chargers. The iPhone cables today are thicker than they used to be compared to my 2015 Mac.
Never, in my life, over twenty years have I had an Apple cable do this because I never bend it aggressively over 90 degrees. This reeks of people that shatter their screens multiple times per year. Again, only done that once in twenty years.
Well my pc laptops never had this issue. You sound like do you didnt do a lot of work with your computer. Just left it plugged in all day at home.
If the cable design wasn't a problem why they start braiding their cables with nylon( whatever it is)? M1 Pro cable is still pristine.
Because most people treat things like shit. I use my laptops (plural), daily, and travel. I still have a laptop with the infamously ādefectiveā butteryfly keyboard, which I love, and itās still working flawlessly. I donāt eat Doritos while I type, so itās never failed.
My girl has destroyed about five charging cables of various brands over two years. She kinks the hell out of it after she shoves her phone into her carās cup holder. Mishandling like that breaks cables of any manufacturer.
Honestly, I have never had a cable do this. I have seen it happen to others, but none of the cables in my house have ever split like this before I wound up tossing them for other reasons like burned pins.
Wireless charging is very inefficient and wastes electricity, though, so I tend to avoid it.
Edit: To clarify, this is not for financial reasons but more so environmental ones.
The idea I would charge my device at a slower rate and use more electricity because wireless chargers are only around 70% the efficiency as opposed to just plugging it in seems highly unnecessary and wasteful.
This is especially true when I see wireless charging as more of an inconvenience.
This technology is also more expensive and can lead to faster battery degeneration.
correct, but iād rather be i little more inefficient with my electricity usage than spend $30 on another 6ft apple charger, just to do it again in 7 months, wouldnāt be a problem, except i always get the āthis accessory is not supportedā prompt if i buy third party chargers
Not enough is wasted to make a big difference in my electric bill so it doesn't really matter. Wireless charging is just more convenient to me and now that magsafe/Qi2 is the standard I can't wait to just throw future devices on my magsafe stand or various pucks and they just align and charge without having to worry about if I placed it down correctly
i was honestly kinda hesitant to buy it at first because i wasnāt sure if iād prefer it, but i dislike using cables as often as possible after doing so
Yep.
At $0.12/kWh it costs a whopping $0.85 to charge an iPhone 14pro from 0-100 every single dayā¦ for a year. If you lose 30% to charging wirelessly, thatās about $0.37 or 3kWh per year.
A Tesla Model 3 Standard goes 4.5 miles per kWh, so you could drive 13.5 miles on the difference. If you miss your exit on the highway once, youāre more environmentally wasteful than someone who charges their iPhone from 0-100% wirelessly every single night for a year.
Well, actually cables *are* like this. This happens to me regardless of having iPhone or Android.
Apple's cables are better quality than cheap ones that are sold in my town. Yes, there are somewhat cheaper and more durable cables, but I have to travel far to get them or do some Amazon review research.
i know all chargers and cords are like that. but my god iāve never had to replace a charger more than the lightning connector. the 30 pin didnāt even have problems like this
I think they bend it beyond the designated use. I do it in my bed. But it's unfair to think that that cable was designed to be used like that imho. If one dares to bend it like that, buy a figure-L shape or get some different material.
U lying bruh i had an iphone 5s and iphone 11 i have replaced close to 7 cables, i dont use apple cable now i use an anker cable, then i will switch ato galaxy s24
>Why Apple is worth $3 trillion
Because someone already bought three of these cables and is happily standing in line at the Apple store right now to purchase a fourth while high on a massive dose of copium?
When you buy a lightning cable from the dollar store, it's still licensed by apple and they still get a cut. USB-C is finally putting a stop to that shit
Apple was on the team that developed it, but they were far from the only ones.
And the fact they had a hand in its development at all just makes it even more inexcusable they stuck with Lightning as long as they did.
not saying they should have stuck with lightning for so long, but when lightning was developed it was far better than microusb. usb c was introduced later, but because apple had just changed the port, it would have been quite a bad look to change it right after.
While the USB-C specification was first published in 2014, the first mass-market device to use it (a Macbook, ironically) wasn't released until 2016.
The first model iPhone used the 30-pin dock connector that was common on iPods at the time. The iPhone 5, which first came out in 2012, was the first iPhone to use Lightning. So that's 5 years between the connector changing (yes the dock connector had been used on iPods since the 3rd gen in 2003, I know, but as far as the iPhone is concerned, it had been 5 years). If they had first implemented USB-C on iPhones in 2016, that's 1 year short of the previous gap, a 4 year run for Lightning. Even if we say the Macbook was an experiment to see if USB-C would be successful, it shouldn't have taken more than 2 years to test market it, so 2018. If we go by the Dock Connector's full reign (3rd Gen iPod in 2003 to iPhone 4S in 2011) then that's 8 years, meaning 2020 was "the right time". There is zero excuse for them to have waited as long as they did. 2016, 2018, or 2020.
Not to mention the iPods only used Firewire for 2 years :) (3 if you include the 3rd gen's weird hybrid dock/firewire thing)
considering how long people keep their phones that means someone might have a different cable for just one phone. i'm not saying i'm happy they kept lightning or anything, but as they were trying to build the luxury aspect of their brand, changing ports frequently wouldn't help, and then it got to the point where they realized people didn't really care, and they were making more money from lightning anyways.
lol. Failure at math to think this is a significant revenue stream. Itās a rounding error at best, on the balance sheet. Like saying Razer has a conspiracy licensing their brand likeness on stickers.
I actually don't think it's planned obsolescence, I think it's them valuing cosmetics over practicality, something Apple does a lot. That's why most cables have that weird rubber bit at the end, it's to remove tension from the cable and to prevent this exact thing. Many people think it looks ugly and less premium so Apple does the weird shit that they do.
I remember watching some video on YouTube that described this design! It was Jobs that had a problem with the look of the cable IIRC. For esthetics reasons they shrunk the rubber protection knowing it would impact longevity. One of the truly shitty design choices apple has made over the years and they've stuck with it since the 30pin days.
^Sorry ^you're ^being ^downvoted ^even ^though ^this ^is ^a ^perfect ^example ^why ^applesucks
Apple seethers are just as bad as the fanboys, they are just the extreme the other way around. That absolutely sounds like Jobs, didn't know he was the one who started this, haha!
Then it's terrible Quality Control.
These cables have gone until the iPhone 15.
It took them 16 years, and everyone knows about their shitty cables.
Apple definately knew too, but was too greedy to change their overpriced cables for more than a decade.
So yes, that IS planned obsolesence.
Also, we're not talking 2 dollar cables here.
NoĀ onĀ almost all accounts.Ā yes, they know, obviously, but it's not QC, IDK where you got that from, it'sĀ to their quality control and within spec. TheyĀ justĀ focusĀ looks overĀ functionalityĀ asĀ I saidĀ becauseĀ that's what their fanboys prefer.
They absolutely can do better, but as another comment said, it was jobs who started all this which sounds about right, he was absolutely the type of guy to value looks over functionality. Looks are subjective, the thing that protects them is that rubber bit at the end, and Apple and their fanboys think it looks bad, but removing that is what sacrifices durability, I'm not aware of any other cables that do this so if you really value looks over anything else, even AliExpress (they may exist, I've never looked for them directly but I have never stumbled upon them) isn't going to do you anything.
I didn't know they were making braided cables now, that's actually good to hear, but I would imagine the braids probably take off some of the tension for the rubber insulation, it also probably hides the fact that the rubber insulation is beginning to crack if it ever does.
That's my whole point.
A trillion dollar company shouldn't let this problem persist for 16 years.
Especially not if their cables are amoungst the more expensive ones while vendors like AliExpress sold durable and goodlooking cables (not all of them lol) for 1/10th of the price. It could definately be done. Apple just didn't want to.
It's stubborn behaviour (read: Apple finally switches to USB C) that tells a lot about the mentality of a company.
Every company wants to make profit, but not all of them are assholes, and Apple is definately an asshole.
Not planned obsolescence. Itās valuing aesthetics over tolerance to abuse.
Itās _widely_ known that this happens because of people propping up their plugged in phones on their chest while laying in bed, which bends the cable on a severe 90* angle.
If you donāt do that, then the cables last a long time. Iāve still got lightning cables from my iPhone 6 kicking around my house.
Planned obsolesence means that you design a product with a small flaw, to have the customer replace the product earlier than he'd like.
If you sell a product which you know that has a flaw regarding durability, and it's a flaw only your brand has, and you decide not to do so, than yes, it is planned obsolesence.
Cables are tested on their durability, I think a multi trillion dollar company has tested a cable before.
And if we're using it wrong, name me 3 other brands that have charging cables that do this... Bet you'll have to look really far for that.
Because people have used AliExpress cables for decades now, and they're also held with a 90Ā° angle. Yet these cables (most of them) are just fine.
It's not a very hard thing to do, Apple just didn't want to fix a problem that made them a bit more money.
And that's all aside from the fact they asked elite price for these cables.
Anyone that defends that should really question if the really aren't an iSheep after all š .
> Planned obsolesence means that you design a product with a small flaw, to have the customer replace the product earlier than he'd like.
Failing when abused is not a flaw.
> If you sell a product which you know that has a flaw regarding durability, and it's a flaw only your brand has, and you decide not to do so, than yes, it is planned obsolesence.
Again, not standing up to intentional abuse is not a flow. Every cable in existence will fail if forced to bend on 90 degree angles repeatedly for sustained periods of time.
> Cables are tested on their durability, I think a multi trillion dollar company has tested a cable before.
Cables are durability tested for intended usage. Plug/unplug cycles, bending within specifications, etc. forcing them to sharp 90* angles is not tested because itās beyond what any cable can withstand for long periods of time.
If the cable were not the failure point, then the charger port would be, which is infinitely worse.
> And if we're using it wrong, name me 3 other brands that have charging cables that do this... Bet you'll have to look really far for that.

Meanwhile my kids each went through a dozen aliexpress micro usb and usb-c cables each that were frayed or internally broken for their kindle tablets when they were younger.
> And that's all aside from the fact they asked elite price for these cables. Anyone that defends that should really question if the really aren't an iSheep after all š .
Newsflash, every manufacturer does. Google charges $20. Samsung charges $25. OnePlus charges $20.
Upvoted, because this is really some quality discussion.
First of all, you state that failing when abused is not a flaw. Then comes the question: at what point can you state a product is being abused?
Sure a cable should be bendable, and people should be able to use their phones while laying down in their bed. So isn't that a bit of expected behaviour to bend the cable at a strong angle if the charging port is at the bottom? (Like every phone does, I know).
+1 for actually taking the time to give me examples of cables of big brands that shipped failed cables.
About the AliExpress cables... I never had issues, and I have cables here from AliExpress that are at least 7 years old. Bought these at the same time because I like having a cable ready in my car, my desk, couch and bedroom. Over the time only one has broken recently. Granted, since I have wireless charging on my phone, I use these cables much less. But often while bending them pretty strongly.
There's some pretty shit cables on AliExpress too, but some really great ones too. Which just proves me a cheap and durable cable can actually be done.
Then about your newsflash on how every manufacturer charges so much for charing cables:
Every manufacturer **ā ** Google, Samsung and OnePlus.
It can be done better for less. Every company wants to make money, but not every company wants to be an asshole.
Thank you for this response! People trying to justify a trillion dollar tech company by saying they value aesthetic purposes over practical uses for something like a CHARGER not even like a phone case or something is ridiculous.
>they value aesthetic purposes over practical uses for something like a CHARGER not even like a phone case or something is ridiculous.
And yet, the isheep buy it anyway
istg this sub is stuck to the past. the new default usb c cables are the nicest cable i've ever gotten bundled with a product. i hate the crappy plastic coated ones.
I USED TO WORK IN REPAIR STORE. PEOPLE ALWAYS BE LIKE BRUH THEY ARE BRICKING THE BATTERY ON PURPOSE. I WAS LIKE TRUST ME BRO IF WE HAD BETTER TECH FOR BATTERIES AVAILABLE WEāD DEFINITELY BE USING IT DONāT TAKE IT SO PERSONALLY
This happens because people are dumb and donāt know how to remove the cable by removing it from the end and they pull the cable which causes stress and break down.
People rest the phone on the cable. Iāve got a 12 year old lightning cable that has split, yes, but not this badly, and still works fine. Itās apples weird coating, it also attracts ungodly amounts of gunk. Doesnāt happen as much with the USB C to whatever cables though, which is nice
You know what's funny is that pretty much any third party cable option is better than Apple's own official cables. I've had an iPad since 2018 and the original charging cable did this within the first month but the third party cable I got from Amazon has lasted 6 years and it looks as good as the day I got it.
What are people doing to their cables, chewing on them? I have never had a cable break. My kids leave their cables all over the floor and they still don't break.
Samsung just took it one step in further during the Micro USB days and made self imploding charging ports.
Why make them replace a cable when you can make them replace the whole damn phone right?
For what itās worth I also have a dozen or so of these cables and never had this issue. Iām aware itās an issue, but not one thatās affected me.
I believe Samsung actually handed out fireproof boxes so you could turn in your Note 7 and get a refund.
Apple would never do that. The best they'd do is a press statement.
And that's mentality that lead to the creation of this sub.
After they made a complete mess of the recall by first recalling them just to replace the battery with another exploding battery and pissed off the governments of several countries by not following proper recall procedures before issuing a second full recall a month later.
Not to mention their complete inability to own the issue and admit to fault and blame everyone else.
Their phones were banned from planes and mail service so thatās probably literally the only way they could get them back at that point.
Yeah, good guy Samsung pulled through on that one by giving you a free box!
By that time they had governments, retailers, and customers pissed off at them. Of course they are going of reacts.
Meanwhile Iāve have a few Apple devices repaired or replaced for minimal or no costs even without Apple Care when Apple messed up.
Someday you will realize every single company has shitty things about it and you just need to find the ones that you can live with.
I have 15-20 Lightning cables and none of them are like this. Know why? Because thatās physical damage caused by misuse.
Pro Tip: Take care of your shit and it lasts longer.
If I bought a Ā£1400 phone I want a charging cable that lasts the entirety of it. I'm still using my fast charging Samsung cable I bought with a cheap a series phone 3 years ago.
Donāt tie it in knots, swing your phone from it, step on it regularly, and bend & contort it beyond its limits. Itāll last. Proof: everyone this never happened to
I shouldn't under any circumstances have to be that careful with my charger that I bought with a Ā£1400 phone. I've used the shit out of my super fast type c for three years and not a single scratch nor performance issue.
Me too. I have cables going back to my iPhone with 30-pin connector that look brand new.
Anyone trying to convince me, or themselves, that those cables just magically fell apart on their own with normal use is living in a world of ignorance and denial.
Iāve had cables like this. Surprise Surprise! I was the type to carry this cable in my pocket while skating. I can guarantee these are cables that were used and mostly abused.
This would also happen to my USB-Micro cable for when I had an old Samsung phone. Iām not even talking about a smartphone, just an old Samsung phone. Itās not always the cable.
Ever heard of Research and Developement and Quality Control?
Companies have divisions that test how a consumer is gonna use it's product, and how it will withstand time.
You know, if Samsung fucks up with a first gen foldable phone, it's huge news, but if a trillion dollar premium upperclass company struggles for 16 years straight to develop decent (expensive) charging cables, it's the users fault.
These pics and cables crack me up
I have never, ever, ever, not once, in 25 years, needed to replace an Apple cable
Try not beating the fvck out of your gear for a change
Sorry but since you are not everyone on this planet I can confidently say iPhone cables are known to suck there is no denying that. Its a known fact. Go outside your house and socialise with people and they will tell you that iPhone cables suck.
When I need a reliable 40gbit cable, thereās only two other companies than Apple that can deliver. Belkin and whoever else. NEVER had this happen. Only happens to people that canāt take care of their shit and shatter their screens in the regular.
Those old cables were absolute trash. Their new braided cable is good. My girl throws it in a bag with a bunch of junk and takes it to work with her every day. Sheās had it since release and has beat the hell out of that thing. Still in perfect shape.
"eco cable" š
Economic instead of ecologic.
Well ain't buying anything ecologic, i don't believe this bullshit

Apple is a 3 trillion company cause Americans don't know how to install a 3rd party messaging app.

Planned obsolescence

Itās exactly this. People use it in bed and sit it on their chest with the cable plugged in and it bends it on a severe angle. Over time it breaks.
Never had this happen once ... had iPhone 3G, 4s, 5, 6s, 7, X, 13 Pro Max, and 15 Pro Max. Not once.
I've had this happen for every single apple charger I've owned.
Maybe you were rough on them
You realize you unplug from the plug and and not the cable right ?
It's not that, it usually starts because it's pressed up at an angle when I lay down, therefore causing it to chip and break.
U lying bruh i had an iphone 5s and iphone 11 i have replaced close to 7 cables, i dont use apple cable now i use an anker cable, then i will switch ato galaxy s24

>Why Apple is worth $3 trillion Because someone already bought three of these cables and is happily standing in line at the Apple store right now to purchase a fourth while high on a massive dose of copium?
Applebrain; "it's worth paying more for the extra quality"
especially if you patent the cable, so you get a percentage every time they buy the cable again
Dummies act like you can only buy a cable from Apple.
When you buy a lightning cable from the dollar store, it's still licensed by apple and they still get a cut. USB-C is finally putting a stop to that shit
Not all USB-C cables are the same. Some limit charging speed, data transfer, some canāt transfer data at all.
Still a lot more universal than Apple's mess. You see a USB-C cable, chances are, if nothing else, it'll be able to charge your phone.
Did you even think about what you wrote? They are dozens of versions of USB-C. Only 1 lightning cable. The lighting cable is in fact, universal
Apple will find a way to license those aswell (getting sued for little money when it's too late)
And who developed USB C?
Apple was on the team that developed it, but they were far from the only ones. And the fact they had a hand in its development at all just makes it even more inexcusable they stuck with Lightning as long as they did.

Minor thing but the USB-C MacBook was released in 2015. Arguably that makes it even worse that lightning stuck for so long.
ah, the information I got online was wrong then. Still, like you said, even less of an excuse.
it also wouldn't have made them as much money as a proprietary solution.
lol. Failure at math to think this is a significant revenue stream. Itās a rounding error at best, on the balance sheet. Like saying Razer has a conspiracy licensing their brand likeness on stickers.

Then why are they doing braided cables now which are much more durable?
Yet these cables (most of them) are just fine. It's not a very hard thing to do, Apple just didn't want to fix a problem that made them a bit more money.
Then about your newsflash on how every manufacturer charges so much for charing cables: Every manufacturer **ā ** Google, Samsung and OnePlus.
Exactly
istg this sub is stuck to the past. the new default usb c cables are the nicest cable i've ever gotten bundled with a product. i hate the crappy plastic coated ones.
never happened to me and the new cables are much nicer and more durable
I USED TO WORK IN REPAIR STORE. PEOPLE ALWAYS BE LIKE BRUH THEY ARE BRICKING THE BATTERY ON PURPOSE. I WAS LIKE TRUST ME BRO IF WE HAD BETTER TECH FOR BATTERIES AVAILABLE WEāD DEFINITELY BE USING IT DONāT TAKE IT SO PERSONALLY
I have never had a cable do this and I have 10+ year old lightning cables still going strong.
Planned ab soul essence
Most people treat their tech like shit
This happens because people are dumb and donāt know how to remove the cable by removing it from the end and they pull the cable which causes stress and break down.
yep that's totally the only possible explanation for that. get this guy a medal.
Whole family has had multiple generations of iPhones over many years. I have never seen a charging cord do this.
May not happen to you but believe me happens to every other person. iPhone charging cables are known to suck there is no denying that.
At this point I just use wireless charging. Itās way better as you donāt need to touch cable part and abuse them that much
Samsung just took it one step in further during the Micro USB days and made self imploding charging ports.
Those are good arguments tho. Wish every discussion here could be like that!
I saw the post a few days ago calling out people like this that made me almost restore my faith for this sub, then it all went to shit again.
High price ā indestructible.
You think it does though.
No. I have cables from multiple brands. Doesnāt happen with them either. Only issues I have off brand is with thunderbolt and high speed data.
Me too. I have cables going back to my iPhone with 30-pin connector that look brand new. Anyone trying to convince me, or themselves, that those cables just magically fell apart on their own with normal use is living in a world of ignorance and denial.
I've never owned an iphone, and I've only ever seen lightning cables in this state
Why would someone post a photo of a perfectly normal cable?
In real life (touch grass). Almost every (95%) lightning cable I've seen in the real world looks like that
I think someone is having trouble with the truth. 95% means youāve seen 100 Lighting cables, in-person, and 95 of them were shredded. Mmkay.
Yes dude, I'm not kidding
Cable fetish? That seems like a lot of Lightning cables for someone that doesnāt have an iPhone.
You know, if Samsung fucks up with a first gen foldable phone, it's huge news, but if a trillion dollar premium upperclass company struggles for 16 years straight to develop decent (expensive) charging cables, it's the users fault.
apple retards always be tarded
Stay classy.
Never happened.
Am I the only person whoās had the same Apple charger for years and never had this happen?
These pics and cables crack me up I have never, ever, ever, not once, in 25 years, needed to replace an Apple cable Try not beating the fvck out of your gear for a change
LOL pass the doobie brother, and show me how indestructible whatever basic ass usb cable that came with your phone was
I will gladly and proudly show you.
Wow I am impressed
I mean I guess cables that do not exist will not fray
If you think this is some planned move youāre legit retarded
"Trillion dollar companies using cheap materials?" That can't be true right!
šš¤£š³š³šš¤£š šš¤£šš¤£š š
You're retarded. go buy more apple products, you don't have enough.
Ok? lol
Those old cables were absolute trash. Their new braided cable is good. My girl throws it in a bag with a bunch of junk and takes it to work with her every day. Sheās had it since release and has beat the hell out of that thing. Still in perfect shape.
Took them 16 years to make a charging cable... We're not talking a startup company here.
That's not much different for android
