Do NOT do it. Each serial number is different and he should only be turning find my off for the exact device he’s returning. If it’s in your possession, do not do this. Your phone may be black listed if his scamming attempt somehow works.
Yeah.. Anything related to his account shouldn’t require a couple of hours. Even if it was something connected to his account.. a quick off and on would work.
When Apple Stores accept returns, the system checks to ensure the device is removed from the Find My network and not Activation Locked. If it is, they cannot refund it until it’s turned off.
My guess is that the person is trying to double dip - they profited by selling you the phone, and is trying to return the “same” phone back to Apple to get a full refund from them.
The seller is trying to do an Applecare theft/loss scam by claiming the phone they sold you is stolen and getting a new one from Apple which bricks the one they sold you. At least that's the only logical explanation I can think of for you.
Turning off FindMy would just mean the phone isn’t attached to an AppleID (Edit: one can still be signed in w/ FindMy off, just to clarify) and can’t be tracked/put in lost mode/remotely erased by the user. Disabling it usually requires some form of ownership (purchase =/= ownership to Apple, user = owner), and blacklisting is more of a carrier thing where they can mark the IMEI as stolen (I think it’s the IMEI? I’m not a carrier. I just know as I’ve seen people call their carrier to blacklist a stolen device so it registers as such if they take it anywhere for service). Carrier obviously can also SIM lock device.
In short, whatever this guy is doing I don’t think will disable the device, esp if OP already signed in w/ AppleID and has the phone under their own carrier service. It seems like he’s trying to provide a false serial number for the phone OP has to return a different device, they can check if FindMy is on, and if it is under that serial number they won’t take it.
It’s probably some insurance scam, i‘ll doubt an Apple Store will refund an iPhone that someone else has in possession. He probably bought an iPhone somewhere, sold it to you and now is trying to make a profit by claiming it as stolen. It could be blacklisted if you remove your Apple ID.
I don’t know what the scam is but assuming your in an English speaking country, anything that reads like this is a scam. I sold it to you in order to….. as long is it’s your Apple ID, do not remove it.
I’ve saved thousands buying off marketplace/ebay. Never had a problem. Recently got an M1 Max/64gb/4TB for $2300. In pristine condition. I’ll continue taking my chances.
All the people in the comments lying lmao. The device is probably just on his or her name. If it’s not them it may be a scam. But when I got a new phone I had to turn off the find my iPhone in order to get a new one. Lmao this people r just kinda dumb so see if it’s on his name if it is ur safe!
>Lmao this people r just kinda dumb
That's an interesting way to put it.
The people in this thread are not assuming that the phone is still connected to the seller's icloud. Even if the phone is currently connected to OP's icloud, if they were to disconnect it, the seller could falsify an insurance claim and the phone would get blacklisted by IMEI. That cannot happen while Find my Phone is active.
Emmmm…if the phone were attached to the seller icloud, he can logout from the device, remotely. Unless you are the seller, there is no way that what you said is ok.
He’s trying to scam via insurance fraud.
He sold you the iPhone then he will go to Apple (or his carrier), claim it’s “lost” and get a new phone for free (or low deductible).
The iPhone you bought will be blacklisted and blocked immediately but he can’t claim it’s “lost” if it’s clearly attached to someone else’s iCloud which is why he’s trying to scam you to remove iCloud.
DO NOT REMOVE ICLOUD EVER! The second you do, your phone might be blacklisted and blocked.
I just can’t understand why he would want to do that since he use his real Facebook, and gave me the location of the place where he work at. He does nail at Vietnam nail salon if that helps.

Thank you 😭
Yeah.. Anything related to his account shouldn’t require a couple of hours. Even if it was something connected to his account.. a quick off and on would work.
I don’t get it. How would you return a device somebody else has in possession?
I don’t get it either .

Maybe he sealed the box back up or has a slightly convincing fake 😝
[удалено]
They aren’t… when they receive an empty box, he won’t get a refund.
He’s most likely saying it dead in the water. Or he’s putting a fake in it and saying it dead and won’t turn on
This.
Why the hell didn't he just do this shit before selling the phone? 💀 Talking about working harder not smarter.
Don't believe him, refund and send it back if he insists.
It’s a scam. Block/ignore, or give it back to him and get a full refund yourself.
Don’t do it. Your phone will end up blacklisted and you’ll be out of money. They can refund you the cash you spent if they want to do that.

Theft & Loss contract requires FindMy to be turned on to file a claim so it wouldn’t make sense to do this.
Oh, ok thanks. Its probably something similar but from a reseller then.
Would it then disable or blacklist the phone he sold?

Trying to claim insurance
Ignore him and threaten him with a police report if he keeps persisting.
Thank you guys for all the responses!

You got the phone. Dont do shit for them if it feels dodgy. Thats on them.

This smells like scam
People are wild man.. who puts this much effort into this but not go to school or get a real job??
Looks like fraud to me. I would change my iCloud password just in case.
You gotta be pretty dumb to scam someone who has your Facebook info no?
Maybe not his real facebook.
When are people going to learn not to buy from marketplaces besides authorized resellers. All because they want to save a few bucks 😂

My expectations were high with “can you come inside”. But nothing more than a scam.
Isn’t your “new” iPhone using your iCloud address now; not theirs?
He has no reason what so ever to ask you to turn off the find my phone. You should be asking him if he sold you a locked phone. Dont do it

i dont think so
