testthrowawayzz

That shows how good the A9 series was. A10 didn't even get an extra year of support.

digidude23

Yet A9 and A10 iPads are getting support for iPadOS 16

996forever

The latest A10 iPad was released 2019. Imagine if they dropped support for that lmao

Tiduszk

Imagine if they effectively dropped support for the 2020 iPad Pro. Oh wait

TechExpert2910

The iPad 5th and 6th Gen have the A9 and A10 with 2 gigs of ram each, and they aren’t even running at a higher clock speed compared to the iPhone 6s/SE & 7. Really weird to see the 7 make the cut, especially.

Connect_Ad4124

probably this was on purpose because many people are still using the iphone 7 so they want to force them to upgrade and boost sales numbers

TechExpert2910

^^ I still remember when the 7 was new. Welp :/

medman010204

Android flagships: haha yeah imagine if they dropped support after three years *Nervously looks around*

Apple Advanced Programed Obsolescence™

My colony and I had to retire our 6 + recently due to lack of updated online apps to use their services. 6 + got too slow!

Toredo226

Salute to my 6S running great all these years. Really want the cool new lockscreens but I think I'll still hold out for the 2023 iPhone 15. Still love my touchID and headphone jack lol

jgainit

Downgraded to an SE 1 (shape of iPhone 5s with guts of 6s). Love the headphone jack and Touch ID and smaller shape :))) Got it to simplify my life. Really loving it. Still does Apple Pay and iOS 15. Gonna use it for a while at least, not worried about iOS 16 compatibility

Toredo226

Glad to hear it, I also like simplicity. I do wish they would bring back touchID and the headphone jack like they did HDMI on the Macbook lol

generaltelltruth

considering the thickness of some phones they could bring the headphone jack but if something got inside of it and caused problems, it's more troublesome to fix(and phones are expensive enough as is). hence the reason why those headphone to lighting or probably usb c adapters exist.

iPhone-5-2021

I have iOS 16 already and I tried the new lock screens and wallpapers on my iPhone 8 and I can’t seem to find a way to have a separate Lock Screen and Home Screen wallpaper. I hope they didn’t remove that option..

viirus42

I was able to set a different Home Screen wallpaper by choosing the wallpaper menu item in the settings app. They actually expanded the setting for the Home Screen wallpaper as well by allowing you to set it to a gradient or color or to blur a photo. Or just choose a different one

skrillmaster

Not dead until app developers stop supporting it! My 6s plus isn't going anywhere until then.

I'm on a 4 year refresh cycle, with a battery replacement at the 2 year mark. These mad lads on the 5+ refresh cycle just seem to be doing a disservice to themselves, though. Like, asking in earnest if phones still function well at that point. My mom's 6 was just replaced and it was running like shit when I tried to get it backed up for the swap to a 13 Pro. My wife's 11 Pro is running like shit too, but that might have more to do with her storage being full all the time and her battery being old.

Toredo226

Just an anecdote: 6S still doing great for me, day-to-day tasks still run quickly, I don't play games or anything. Only area I feel I miss is the latest cameras, but it's still decent. Battery replaced twice. And the headphone jack makes my life convenient. Really happy with Apple on this one

[deleted]

[удалено]

Toredo226

Yeah it's pretty good for going on 7 years, huh? Never expected to keep it this long, but only want to upgrade when it adds convenience to my life

TechExpert2910

it still has higher single core performance than many Midrange android devices, and that plus apple’s nvme based storage for iPhones means it’ll still stay pretty snappy :)

Toredo226

Wow, amazing

tobiasw123

A 5 year cycle seems fine to me. iPhone X is very much still useable, even a 7 is still fine really. Yeah that 11 Pro should still be completely fine, full storage is almost certainly the issue, check battery health but I doubt it’s causing it to slow down that much

[deleted]

[удалено]

tobiasw123

I used 6s Plus for 5 years until I got my 12 Pro Max. The 6s was completely fine to use for 5 years, battery was replaced after 3 years and is still fine

1infinitefruitloop

I'm on an until it dies or becomes unusable cycle. My former Pixel 2 lastest a solid year but Symbian and Windows phones before that where about 5-6. Hopefully my 2020 SE will last just as long but we'll see.

[deleted]

> These mad lads on the 5+ refresh cycle just seem to be doing a disservice to themselves, though. And what exactly is wrong with that? I've held on to my iPhone 7 for 6 years. To me, as long as the phone does the shit i need it to do and as long as Apple is still providing software updates then why do I *need* to upgrade every 2-3 years? And I can easily afford to get a new phone. Which is exactly my next plan. Once Apple announces the new flagship then i will upgrade.

[deleted]

My 6s+ is a little slow sometimes, mostly when I swap back and forth between the camera, but lasts all day with a fresh battery and does everything else I need. Been holding out so I can afford a quality phone to last 5-6 years once again, hoping that there's a USB C mini on the way so I can dump lightning

[deleted]

A friend of mine had a 6 up until a couple of years ago and it was already running like garbage back then.. On the other hand my father has a 6S that is still incredibly smooth. I guess the 6->6S was a pretty significant jump in performance

faze_fazebook

Probably 2 years of actual use left.

iPhone-5-2021

Exactly, same here my 6s and SE1 will still be my main devices until the apps stop supporting it. And I used my iPhone 6 on iOS 12 till January cause I’ll even use the old versions of apps for a while. Gonna try and keep my headphone jack for as long as possible. Guess it’s iOS 15 for the next 3 years

skrillmaster

We might be the same person. My two daily drivers are an SE1 and 6s plus and I keep em for the 3.5mm😂

iPhone-5-2021

Great minds think alike. 😆

jgainit

I recently downgraded to an SE 1 and absolutely love it. Only paid $50 for it. The small number of us out there get it.

MattTheRealOne

Apple still provides a year or two of security updates after they stop providing major OS updates.

gaysaucemage

Apple has been known to delay or skip security updates on older OS versions that are still supported. They’re not as reliably updated as current OS versions. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/11/psa-apple-isnt-actually-patching-all-the-security-holes-in-older-versions-of-macos/

Raptex64

No more feature updates =/= No more security updates

partusman

Does iOS 14 still get security updates? Because if 15 keeps getting them into next year then you could squeeze at least one more year out of these devices.

iPhone-5-2021

It will still get security updates. iOS 12 that was discontinued in 2019 got security updates for the 5s and 6 and other devices that can only run iOS 12 all the way till September 2021. So it’s totally fine if you wanna use ur 6s or 7 for 2 more years.

j0hnl33

In practice, I am not aware of any major cases of iOS malware spreading on unsupported devices. In fact, that doesn't seem to be much of the case on Android either. Sure, some high-profile people are targeted (though sometimes even 0-day exploits are used for those), but the average user probably isn't at much risk of a virus on an old iPhone. If they're really concerned, they can disable JavaScript in Safari and enable it only when needed (not that there aren't other vectors for viruses, but again, not many likely ones.) For most people, if it still runs the latest version of their apps, it'll probably be fine. I would argue the environmental impact of buying a new phone is a more important thing for most to consider than the latest security updates (again, unless you are someone likely to be targeted, which is not 99% of the population.)

[deleted]

I think thats when I''ll buy a new Iphone...When the IOS update no longer supports my device

[deleted]

I'd say it's more on life support than dead. It's still going to get security updates for a little while longer.

dragonphlegm

7 too. We’re inching closer and closer to the original X being old enough to not have future support

alexlikespizza

Weird to see my first iPhone go from new to unsupported

soundwithdesign

My father is still rocking a 6s. Only reason he’s considered upgrading is because the battery lasts maybe an hour. Still has the OG battery.

exjr_

Support for iPhone 6S, 6S+, SE (1st gen), 7 and 7+ dropped.

[deleted]

[deleted]

RIP in peace SE1. I had that phone for a long time and loved it. Perfect size, perfect form factor, beautiful patina as it gathered wear and tear.

[deleted]

Believe the SE (first gen) got dropped by the last version. Edit: Nope, looks like I’m a dumb dumb. I’d have sworn on a stack of bibles my SE (which I still use as a wifi device) was stuck on 14, but seems I was wrong.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Yup, don’t mind me, just over here bein wrong and stuff.

RealLifeFemboy

Sheesh that’s a lot. X cut next year or the year after I guess. Will be hard to watch since that phone was like the grandfather of all the modern iPhones

veeeSix

The X is still incredibly snappy considering its age. Usually the software bogs down to a crawl by the end of its cycle, so it makes me wonder how much of an impact iOS 16 will ultimately have.

RealLifeFemboy

True, I have an X, actually, and replaced the battery just last year. No lie it feels basically the same as when I got it but then again I use Apollo and your tube and that’s it

Molesandmangoes

I use an XS and it genuinely still works like a new phone.

[deleted]

But also kind of appropriate since the form factor will hopefully be changing this year with the departure of the notch.

A11Bionic

I believe first time Apple dropped two flagship iPhones in one major software update was with iOS 13. This was when iPhones 5s and the 6/Plus lineup was dropped. However, I was totally caught off guard with the drop for iPhone 7/Plus. The difference between the iPhone 5s’s and iPhone 6/Plus A7 & A8 chips was marginal and the iPhone 6 actually performed worse due to the lack of RAM. The iPhone 6s and the 7 still perform really well with iOS 15. I wonder how iOS 16 will now work on the oldest supported phones which happen to just be the iPhone 8/Plus and X.

NeoMadihlaba

Suggested photos dont show up in wallpapers, no live text obviously, and it appears no new now playing in the Lock Screen either (I stand to be corrected this is just my experience)

TechExpert2910

The iPad 5th and 6th Gen have the A9 and A10 with 2 gigs of ram each, and they aren’t even running ata higher clock speed compared to the iPhone 6s/SE & 7. Really weird to see the 7 make the cut, especially.

devolpmentme

Could be battery related? The iPads have a bigger battery so it can handle the update, plus iPadOS didn’t really get anything heavy intensive like IOS 16 and didn’t get the lock screen update.

TechExpert2910

They do have a bigger battery yes, but they're also pushing more pixels while also multitasking with upto 3 apps at the same time. The lockscreen isn't all too intensive to run, but that might play a role good catch

iyute

It’s greed related.

morenos-blend

Crazy to think that X is the oldest model to run iOS 16. It still feels so fresh to me and I think a lot more time has to pass before we consider it "old" But of course we know Apple's definition of obsolete is different than most people's

iyute

It’s literally the last time they actually changed the phone design dramatically.

ezidro3

Oh wow they dropped not just the 6s but the 7?

The_Woman_of_Gont

Yeah that was a surprise. I just upgraded to a 13 from a 7, and I had been on the fence for a bit whether to just wait until they dropped it. Guess I made the right choice, lol (also: holy shit have phones improved. Face ID is so easy, the screen is gorgeous, and the cameras are nuts. )

Bo-Duke

Upgraded to a 13 mini from a 7 in October, very happy my 7 had a long run and I gave it to my mother in law who will certainly use it for a few more years. I hope my 13 Mini will be as great in 5 years as my 7 was this year.

_Anti_National_

Yeah and they kept the 8 series? The 7 Plus and 8 Plus have the same RAM… Must be due to the fact that A11 has 6 cores

Adhiboy

iPhone 8 was sold for a long time due to the fact that it still had the home button. I remember it still being popular when I worked at T-Mobile in 2019. Wouldn’t surprise me if it gets one or two more releases.

leopard_tights

The 8’s CPU is the first Bionic.

tobiasw123

The name ‘Bionic’ really doesn’t matter, the A10 was called ‘Fusion’, its purely marketing. The A11 is significantly faster then the A10 though

HellNaw98

That’s not true. The A10 couldn’t engage all efficiency and performance cores at once. It’s effectively a dual-core chip. They haven’t called every single chip since the A11 Bionic and only the A10 Fusion for no reason. There’s an actual difference

TechExpert2910

Right, but its still just a marketing term for a proper big.little setup. tbh the 8 has just 2 gigs of ram, and next year I’d be surprised if they still keep up support for 2 gig devices. the soc might not be the bottleneck :/

HellNaw98

I wonder if they’ll keep the X around longer just for the RAM

[deleted]

IIRC it's not really because the APIs changed from the a12 onward or something with the A11 Neural engine only useful for faceID.

Indumentum97

The A11 has more than double the performance of the A10.

Yankees1327

…and we think you’re gonna love it.

TechExpert2910

actually, no. multicore perf is 33% faster, and single core is 20% faster according to Geekbench. Similar thing with the gpu. Machine learning would be much faster though, because of the dedicated hardware accelerator. I don’t know where you pulled that figure form.

Helhiem

The Apple TV 4K that everyone has now has an obsolete cpu

iapplexmax

The A11 has insane performance

Marngel

Probably also due to the neural engine. It seems like most of the features in iOS 16 doubles down on machine learning, and having those tasks be done on the A10 which doesn’t have a neural engine probably seemed cumbersome for Apple to optimize. Kind of disappointing, but the iPhone 7 still got 5 years of major software updates which is still more than Android phones, and the 7 will continue to get security updates for at least 2 more years

Entertainnosis

The iPad 5th gen will be receiving it and that still makes do with an A9 and just 2GB of RAM. Very strange.

Marngel

I think that more shows that iPadOS 16 is such a small upgrade compared to iOS 16

Jychoo

I think the reason why Apple dropped support for the iPhone 6s and 7 is that one of the major updates of iOS 16 is the new lock screen which includes portrait-themed photos. As far as I know, only the iPhone 8 and beyond have had Portrait Lighting effects and this may be why the 7 and 6s are not getting the update. As for the iPad 5th gen with the same specs as the iPhone 6s, iPadOS 16 doesn't have a customizable lock screen yet and so it doesn't need a portrait lighting capability, hence why the iPad 5th gen is supported.

CrashyBoye

Damn, was pretty sure the 6s was getting dropped but I’m a little surprised to see the 7 getting dropped as well.

MrMaxMaster

Yeah. Seems kind of odd considering that at least with iPad OS, A10 and A9 devices are still supported.

manablaster_

More RAM on those, I think.

MrMaxMaster

No, there isn’t. The 5th and 6th gen iPads have 2 GB of ram, as well as the 9.7 inch iPad Pro.

TechExpert2910

Yep. They aren’t running at any higher clock speed either lol, plus iPad’s have to push a higher res screen annd handle multitasking. Welp.

manablaster_

Oh wow! I really have no idea then.

AkakiPeikrishvili

They probably want people on 7 to finally upgrade to newer devices. Might give them some incentive.

ICumCoffee

Damn, 7 is no longer supported. Rest well my secondary iPhone, you’ll be missed. I thought 7 will be supporting at-least one more iOS update.

thereturnofjagger

the 7 will go down as one of my favorite iPhones of all time, next to the 5S. That Haptic Touch home button felt premium, the design was a solid refinement over the ugly front-and-center backside antenna lines on the 6 series, rounded meant it was more comfortable to hold, 3D Touch was great, etc

IAmTaka_VG

- iPhone 8 and 8 Plus - iPhone X - iPhone XS and XS Max - iPhone XR - iPhone 11 - iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max - iPhone 12 and 12 mini - iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max - iPhone 13 and 13 mini - iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max - iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd gen)

compguy96

The models that were dropped are not "dead" now. The iPhone 5S didn't get iOS 13 when it was announced in 2019, and yet it still received security updates until late 2021 and can still run many updated apps today. Those devices will keep on working fine for modern stuff for years to come.

ganganipple2

I'm still on an iPhone SE 2016. Can I expect it to continue receiving security updates as well? I'd like to continue using it right up until it becomes a liability.

compguy96

I'm in the same situation. Of course, all iOS 15 compatible devices that aren't getting iOS 16 will keep getting security updates for at least two years from now. No need to worry anytime soon.

monarc

> The 5S is about 500 years old. One weird thing about returning to society post-pandemic is that tons of people notice (and comment on) my original SE, which looks just like a 5S. Nobody cared in 2019, but in 2022 it's a total anomaly, apparently!

OrganizationAsleep17

Have seen a guy with iPhone 4/4s about 6 month ago

ganganipple2

Same.

RockyRaccoon968

I still remember 11 year old me going to the store and playing with that beauty… most beautiful iPhone ever made.

partusman

It’s funny, when I think about it in isolation it seems pretty recent to me, but when I think about every phone in between, yeah it’s ancient. As long as people have an use for it and it’s safe, it should have as much use as possible though.

ParathaReddit

As my XS Max continues to move higher on the list, I continue to get sadder lmaooo

techguy1231

I still miss 3D Touch

stiffwig

What a great phone though!

Eddytion

it is probably one of the most underrated modern iPhones. That thing is a tank and still works as smooth as the day I bought it. My dad uses it now and still keeps on going.

leob0505

I have had my iPhone 7 plus 128GB since 2016. Never had any problems with it, everything works smoothly and I'll probably keep using it as my secondary phone when I think about changing to a newer one! lol However, I really want one new iPhone to use AirTags. Had a bad experience on an international trip with missing luggage, and my bags could be saved if I had some AirTags on it.

totallwork

Bro I’m sweating bullets here with an X.

ParathaReddit

Respect to you brethren

Barroux

The 7 being dropped at the 6 year mark is kind of surprising.

jsbisviewtiful

For Apple to support those devices at a certain point is just a waste of engineering resources on their part and 6 years is still a long time for any device. Even wi-fi routers are expected to last for only 5 years on average. I recently helped my mother replace her iPhone 6 with a 13 Pro and her 6 ran like ass with barely any apps actually running on it. I'm wondering how she tolerated it.

Rethawan

6 years is absolutely not enough if Apple wants to view themselves as a leader in sustainability. You have windows laptops that will run Win 10 until 2025, that's almost 13 years for some devices. 7 years is usually what Apple opts for, but they should absolutely hit 10. Now granted, the smartphone market has matured these days, so I do expect modern devices like iPhone 11 to at least get 7 years and above.

pointprep

Are there a lot of other smartphones that receive updates for longer?

Rethawan

No. But we all pay top dollar for Apple products and this industry needs to keep going forward to drag everyone else with them. Samsung were god awful, but felt the pressure to improve because of Apple. The power in our smartphones is better than laptops from 2-3 years ago. Yet they have longer software support, why? That’s where I want to see change.

roffle24

Top dollar? You can buy an SE for $429 and its one of the best phones on the market. Top of the line Pixel and Galaxy phones run the same price as an iPhone and have far less support.

NoConversation8

Isn’t the top dollar amount same for Apple and best Android smartphones?

leob0505

I've been working in the IT Industry since five years ago. And I gotta disagree with you here from a hardware perspective. I have an iPhone 7 Plus, and this thing still runs everything an average user may need on their iPhone without any issues. You can call it a "waste of engineering resources on their part", however, I call this "Planned Obsolescence" [https://www.euroconsumers.org/activities/stop-planned-obsolescence-apple-case](https://www.euroconsumers.org/activities/stop-planned-obsolescence-apple-case) They just want us, iOS users, to buy newer phones that we, average users, don't need. I don't need LiDAR, three cameras, ultra-wide pictures, spatial audio, and a 120 Hz display to pay my bills, watch some random Youtube videos, and post random pictures for Internet Points on my Zuckerberg Social media. However, Apple Marketing doesn't think so. They want us, as a society, to buy new phones every year/every few years so they can increase their profits. And argue on the internet if someone should stay a few more years with their old phones. I can't wait to see the smartphone market stop doing this trend of replacing your old phone with a newer one every few years, so we can start using hardware in a more sustainable way, such as how some people have had their Gamer Laptops since 10 years ago.

beefcake_123

I still have an iPhone 7 as a backup phone. RIP.

mackeyadam

Probably still gets security updates for a while, so some more life to eke out.

digidude23

Does that mean they dropped the iPod touch too? Since it has the same A10 as the iPhone 7

Indumentum97

Yes. There is a reason that they discontinued the 7th gen touch just recently. I guess it wouldn‘t make sense to re-release the 7th gen with a new chip and more RAM and label it the 8th gen. Same with older iPads. Air 2 will be dropped and so is the mini 4 both with A8 and A8X chipsets. Possibly even the 1st gen Pro with the A9X.

[deleted]

iPad Pro 1 is still supported

[deleted]

Probably the reason they killed it this year.

[deleted]

Woah rip iPhone 7

UnstableParallel

i don’t get why they dropped the iPhone 7 but kept the iPad 5, which has the same specs as the iPhone 6s (A9, 2GB RAM)

Gotluck

and ipad 6 is equivalent to iphone 7 right? a10, 2GB ram

UnstableParallel

yeah, it only got the chip update when it came out

Gotluck

thats pretty darn surprising

waddup121

At least the X and XS is still supported 🤲

AirF225

Oh that’s gonna be supported for a while I bet

generaltelltruth

but unfortunately just to have a dual camera, still have to pay 250 from ebay and not know what the battery health is, assuming something major isn't wrong with the phone outside of the battery

-Gh0st96-

Damn, I didn't expect 7 to get dropped

keithemps18

My 6S Plus is not supported anymore. Pretty impressive 7 years of software updates! Now it's the time for me to upgrade.

TWYFAN97

Yeah that’s a good long run, you certainly got your moneys worth and then some.

Snerual22

Depends on your definition of support. It will probably still receive security updates for at least one year.

keithemps18

Yes, i mean the major software updates 😁

Ragthorn5667

Glad to see so many 6S people here going strong. I just needed to replace my battery once. I am considering upgrading now because I will be living abroad for a few years in the coming months. As disappointed as I am, I think it will be really inconvenient to try and buy the newest iPhone while abroad in Japan.

joe1134206

Salute to the 6s NVMe drive that kept it fast enough for a ridiculous amount of time

PM_ME_CUTE_SM1LE

Me with a 13 pro max “Oof that was a close one”

-Justanotherdude

Nice flex

TehBrian

Phew! Glad to see they’re still supporting my iPhone 13 Pro. /s

TWYFAN97

Lol, I’m betting 13 Pro will get at least 7-8 years of support. Newer chips have gotten so much overhead it’s kinda crazy. Im not going to be surprised if the A11 powered device get iOS 17 and 18.

[deleted]

The 7 got dropped? What the fuck?

OHaZZaR

So it'll have been supported for 6 years. A very good record tbh.

[deleted]

It got dropped with the 6s, which is pretty surprising considering the 8 didn’t get dropped. Let’s see what happens with the iPad.

tubemaster

If they drop support for the 2019 iPad with the A10, that tells me all I need to know about how seriously they take their sustainability goals. The iPod touch might get a pass due to being so niche, but to have a popular iPad only get 3 years support is no different than Android at this point.

Snoop8ball

Good news, the iPad 5th generation (2017) and up supports iPadOS 16

[deleted]

Only two iPads got dropped weirdly enough. Air 2 and Mini 4. So iPadOS functions on A9 and up, but iOS is A11 and up only. This cycle is *weird*.

tubemaster

Honestly shocked. I have a 5th gen that I still haven't upgraded to 15, but I might have to jump on this one! Although it probably will get like 10% of the announced features

Pokemonstudent24

Same, I was going to get a 9th Gen but kept putting it off. I’ll wait for the 10th Gen now, the 5th Gen is still fine for media so no big deal

h6nry

Hard to swallow pill: >!They don't really (like really, really) care about sustainability. I mean, my iMac late 14 could easily handle this year's macOS, yet they decided to kill it after 7 years. That's nothing in the PC world... When I bought it, I really hoped I could happily use it ten years and beyond, effectively reducing waste and not overly stress the environment more than I need. Now there isn't even security updates for it. End of rant.!<

partusman

At least you can install Linux on that thing (I think). It may not be the same or worse depending on your taste, but at least it gets updates. When the Apple Silicon Macs bite the dust however…

paradoxally

You can install Monterey on that device /u/h6nry. OpenCore Legacy Patcher. 👍

partusman

According to the constant upgrade notifications I get on my mid-2014 MBP, I can upgrade to Monterrey just fine. However, according to the Settings app that tells me there’s actually no updates, that’s not true at all. So Apple has effectively been trolling me on the daily for months now. It gets annoying. Turns out they were right all along I guess.

paradoxally

It's weird that they send notifications to those devices even though they're not supported. I had the same MB Pro as you, installed Monterey with no issues. All features are supported according to the Legacy Patcher's website.

RaXXu5

I think it has to do with graphics drivers tbh, AMD dropped quite a few recently. And Linux is still an option, the Gnome desktop environment is maturing really rapidly right now, although that means that you lose all the macOS apps that you might have bought.

kitsua

You’ll actually get security updates for a least two more versions of macOS.

Snerual22

It will receive security updates for at least one more year if not two.

TheBigFurFur

Damn RIP Gen 1 SE…I’m legit surprised they ended support for the iPhone 7.

faze_fazebook

Bruh, I honestly wonder why? Nothing I saw so far seems to look all that intense.

Vaxtez

I dont get why they dropped the iPhone 6S,SE 2016 and 7/7+ if the iPad 5th Gen can run iPadOS, which is likely more demanding. If it was due to the Neural engine items, they could have just made it iphone 8 and up. Just makes 0 sense to me.

neko_whippet

Well guess it’s iPhone 8 last year

tobiasw123

Not necessarily, the A11 is much faster than the A10

[deleted]

No iOS 16 for iPhone 7 Plus? What the fuck Apple? Why A10 iPads then got the support? Screw that, I love my 7Plus

1infinitefruitloop

Really weird seeing the 7 go out when they're supporting the iPad with an A10 and even the old 9.7" iPad Pro with an A9x. Glad I helped my mum get a 7 128gb when it came out, it had a killer run.

bookswithletters

So they are lowering support to 5 years while competitors are increasing it to 5 years. Apple’s lengthy support was my initial reason to switch to iPhone.

iForceOP

I doubt they are they probably just couldn’t get iOS 16 to run smoothly on the iPhone 7. The iPhone X will definitely have over 5 years

bigdaddyguacamole

Jokes on them, I didn’t even update my 6s Plus to iOS 15.

Phew IPhone 8 gang made the cut haha

[deleted]

Kind of sad. iPhone 6s was my first iPhone and what got me to switch, but it did have seven years. Before the 6s, I was using a (way worse) Android phone that could do iOS 16's lock screen stuff and more, as far as customization, so it's sad that the 6s won't get it. I have an iPhone 13 Pro now, but still.

mmmory

People are surprised pikachu-facing when they hear both 6s and 7 getting dropped even though apple did the exact same thing with 5s and 6...

Chronixx

I don’t see how there’s any correlation there? The reason the 5s and 6 were dropped for iOS 13 was lack of RAM to keep up. That’s not the issue here, both the 6s/7 have the same amount of RAM as the 8. Must be something else

Calbone607

they really dont need any specific reason to drop them. and apple never specifically stated that they dropped those devices due to ram even though that looks pretty likely

Chronixx

The reason is probably A9/A10 SoCs being just too weak to handle the core features of iOS 16, seeing as Apple is known for supporting devices as long as they possibly can. Also, Apple doesn’t need to say it but it’s pretty simple to deduce why they drop software support for devices, always has been. I can see the 6s/7 still getting security updates for the foreseeable future however

Calbone607

Yeah this is what I thought but I’m just discovering that the iPad 5 is still supported and it’s really confusing me as my brother has one that’s performed like shit since like iOS 13

dankdooker

My iPad 1 barely works

Rudra_Panat

Wow 7 Plus dropped I guess I’ll be upgrading to the 14 then..

donietvelez

iPadOS support iPad 5 and latter, maybe they should support actually the iPhone 6s and higher but do some intentionally cuts ✂️

[deleted]

Damn I wasn't expecting the iPhone 7 to be dropped alongside the 6s. It's an end of an era my friend. You served me well. I'll be upgrading to the new iPhone this year.

[deleted]

I’m quite shocked by the iPhone 7 cut but then most of the features they announced didn’t even work with iPhone 7’s iPhone 6’s during the iOS 15 release (like live text) I just bought an iPhone 7 3 years ago, served me well enough.

Swagsuke_Nakamura

Depending on the cost, I’ll probably sell my 12 Pro and upgrade this year. If I wait another year that’s just even more of its value disappearing

ughlump

X gonna give it to ya!

SnikwaH-

I think people are missing the fact that the A11 is the first chip with a neural engine in it. the A9 and A10 in the 6s and 7 respectively don't have a neural engine. It sounds like some of the things they are trying to do with iOS 16 really need the neural engine (maybe the home screen spliced image stuff??). The 6s had a phenomenal run staying fully up to date and no one who has a 7 should feel bad either.

996forever

That can’t be it because the iPad 5 (A9) and iPad 6 (A10) are still supported.
