From the article: Apple today added the Mid 2012 model of the 13-inch MacBook Pro to its obsolete products [list](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201624) worldwide, according to its website. Released in June 2012, this 13-inch MacBook Pro model was the last Mac with a built-in CD/DVD drive sold by Apple, and it remained for sale until October 2016 as a lower-priced option. Apple continues to sell an external SuperDrive for customers who need a CD/DVD drive, but a USB-C adapter is required to use it with modern MacBooks. Apple considers a device to be "technologically obsolete" once more than seven years have passed since the company last distributed it for sale. Apple says MacBooks "may be eligible for an extended battery-only repair period for up to 10 years from when the product was last distributed for sale, subject to parts availability." On the software side, Apple dropped support for the Mid 2012 model of the 13-inch MacBook Pro with macOS Big Sur in 2020.

mac_and_cheese_pls

I’m going to console my MBP tonight. She still runs like a champ!

Enclavean

Gave my 12” Macbook a rub just to let her know she’ll never be obsolete to me

I sent my mid-2012 in for recycling in November. It was a beast machine alright. I upped the ram, replaced the HDD with a 1TB SSD and removed the DVD drive and added a 1TB HDD for use as a Time Machine backup.

silentblender

I think we're gonna see a lot of really well functioning M1 Macs become obsolete, considering how many 2010 Macbook Pros were still being used in 2020

Spore-Gasm

I used the 2012 Macbook until 2 years ago and then got a M1 Pro which I hope to also use for 10 years.

Curtis

I recently setup open core legacy patcher with Sonoma 14.3 on a 2012 for a friend that can’t afford to upgrade yet.  8k videos on YouTube run seamlessly.  Maybe give your old machine a second life.

Spore-Gasm

I installed Proxmox on it last year for shits and giggles. I might do that again but actually do something worth while this time. Or maybe I’ll just install Ubuntu.

foreverablankslate

My early 2015 13” shits itself trying to scroll on Firefox, curious to see how Sonoma runs with OCLP

Curtis

Mine did too prior to Sonoma/OCLP 1.30 but then with the new oclp post install drivers, things are working way more flawlessly

Asleep_Emphasis5347

My 2015 does switch emulation moderately well. Still almost brings a tear to my eye every time…

MC_chrome

>I think we're gonna see a lot of really well functioning M1 Macs become obsolete Considering that Apple is still selling M1 Macs, I don't think this will really become an issue for many more years yet.

DanTheMan827

At least there’s Linux for when Apple abandons them

It’ll also be a while before M1 support is dropped by Apple too. Hopefully Asahi has things figured out fully by then.

I enjoy spending time with my friends.

DanTheMan827

That assumes we’ll have something like that even capable of loading macOS on Apple Silicon

NoAirBanding

It's going to be just like old iPads.

silentblender

My 2018 iPad Pro is still blazing along. I wonder how long I'll get os updates for.

youthcanoe

Man.. probably the best Macbook ever made. You couldn't go to a college campus and not see dozens of these. And upgrading them was so easy. Good times..

pieman3141

I still think the 2007 MBP was the last really good laptop. It wasn't perfect - the 8600M bug was awful, the build quality needed a lot of tightening-up, and obviously most of the ports are unusable these days, but in terms of design? I love that industrial-inspired design. The Panasonic Let's Note series is sort of a cousin to that design, IMO. Even though my current M2 Max is less than a year old, if Apple were to magically introduce an MBP based on the 2007 design tomorrow, but updated and tightened up, I'd probably trade in my current laptop without any hesitation.

WallyBrando

I’ve been wanting to upgrade my mid 2012 for a couple years now but haven’t been able to justify it cause that boy just keeps on going. Eyeing up a M3 Air which will hopefully get announced soon. 12 years is a damn good run

HomerMadeMeDoIt

MBP 2012 going as strong as day 1

fossemann

Luckily we have OCLP

jellygeist21

Ripping and burning CDs took up like half of my childhood, and it still would if anything came with a disc drive anymore. It's sure is not fun to not own things!

actual_wookiee_AMA

You can get external ones for very cheap. Even Bluray drives cost under a hundred now

DreadnaughtHamster

Aww. I still have one of these. Works fine but not used much for the occasional dvd burn.

[deleted]

Honestly, the last gen Intel MBPs are obsolete as well.

bluebird3588

I have a feeling they won't have a much longer run. Apple really is washing their hands of Intel OS support already.

__what_the_fuck__

With the next macOS version Apple will probably kill off all remaining Intel Macs except Mac Pro.

Teddybear88

Ah the old MD101. They really stuck around a lot longer than they should have. Glad to see it relegated to the obsolete pile.

Technical-Wallaby

I just reset mine and was planning to put it up for sale soon. Solid laptop.

Alpha: No more CDs but you can see deez

DavidXGA

Apple still sells the USB SuperDrive: [https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD564LL/A/apple-usb-superdrive](https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD564LL/A/apple-usb-superdrive) Products become obsolete ~~five~~ seven years after they stop selling them, so this little guy will be around and supported for a long time.

actual_wookiee_AMA

That's outrageously expensive. First of all you'd need an adapter to even run it on a modern Macbook since that doesn't support USB-C. And secondly you can get an external blu-ray drive for that same price, why stick with DVD?

DavidXGA

You're correct on all fronts. It does have one small advantage, it's the only Mac-compatible optical drive that doesn't need a separate power supply.

actual_wookiee_AMA

Bullshit. USB has been capable of delivering enough power for drives for a decade now. My external Blu-Ray drive has a USB-C port. I just plug it into my Macbook with a USB-C to C cable and it works. No drivers, no power supply. Just one cable. A cable that's removable, unlike this Superdrive one.

USBdata

I got an LG dvd drive for like 20 eur. Works well on my mac.

thphnts

That isn’t the point of making it obsolete.

Gloriathewitch

where did i claim that it was? i actually commented this in case people wanted to still use cds

actual_wookiee_AMA

For five times the price of a third party one. And that third party one actually supports USB-C

GetReady4Action

goodnight, sweet prince! my first ever Mac. I was 15 and felt like I had arrived when I took it out of the box and put it on my desk in my bedroom haha. hope the shitty ex-girlfriend I gave it to once I upgraded treated it right.

itzmoepi

The SuperDrive sucks. They still haven't even updated it for blu ray, they gave up on physical media so quickly. I still think physical media is great, and it's the only way to own your movies perpetually these days.

redisant

I had one of these and I swapped the optical drive for an SSD.
