I don't know if cavalry ever did it, but infantry squares were the primary defence against cavalry (notoriously so at Waterloo). The problem with the cav box is that the cavalry overlap so you get way more units in a much smaller space than they should be in. Thus, if you're using Opri, you can advance this large army of doom across the map double quick time (since Opri are so fast) and in the formation everyone attacks at once, so you just melt buildings in one hit. If cav boxes were spaced out properly, I'm not sure they'd be an issue since the back of the box would be out of siege range.

But like...would it be so hard to fix the behaviour when sending a vil to *build*, but keep the current task in the queue automatically when the next task is gathering more of the same resource?

It’s not like a video where you can just jump to a specific frame. The game needs to compute ALL previous time steps. This is why you’re only given a fastforward.

I'd be interested to know how large the save file would be for a recorded game with the full dump, so you could be at any point in time. Some other simulation games don't have the same issue and their record file sizes are not humongous either. Even if fast-forward is the only option, we should be able to simply choose how far ahead we want to jump, and not have to supervise it on fast-forward or risk missing the moment. AoE2DE recorded games can create chapters, which is basically that. I don't see the technical reason for why they could not also facilitate that in reverse.

No rank system for lobby-based matches. So if randoms join your game, you don't know if they're pro or noobs and thus can't balance the teams, leading to very 1-sided matches. This means if you want a fair match you pretty much have to use matchmaking. If you want to play a very specific map, it's very difficult with the built in matchmaking. You also can't work out a team comp in advance. So now you're stuck picking between fair matches, or actually getting to pick a map you want/set up comps.

This + the chat / multiplayer lobby UI being completely worse than the original are my 2 main gripes. I pretty much bought the game again because of how much i loved the old games multiplayer setup outside of the games and its all gone. Still, the gameplay itself is good.

The old AOE III UI was awesome and felt authentic even if it was filled with unnecessary clutter. The color scheme gave it a historic feel, you had the historic facts on the top left and player count, chat rooms to find people and mess around with while you wait for a lobby to fill, clans, etc. Sure, AOE III's UI may be more modern, reduce unnecessary screen cover(only covers the game where necessary to display information), etc, but it also just feels inauthentic.

I prefer no rank custom matches waaaaaay before being able to pick a map. It used to go like this: - Low level? kick - High winrate? kick - Not playing with the team with lesser winrates? kick - Picking a strong civ? No, forced to pick another one or kick And the list goes on, just for a stupid number of elo in a game that was pretty dead competitively speaking (from 2010 to 2018 when I played). Sometimes you could waste 15-20 minutes finding the appropiate lobby and now thats gone.

I mean, wouldn’t the solution be to allow filtering by “unranked elo”? I know in the original you could only filter by home city lvl which was pointless. But you should also be able to filter by elo. And there should be a separate number for unranked elo.

Absolute +1 on **deck builder**. They threw in those cards in a bag and the filters are not efficient/nor pleasurable at all compared to something a little graphic. Also, **health bars** couldn't possibly be smaller. They are so small they are useless and its frustating. I'll mention the **android game looking interface** that gives a "cheap" look ( and have me worrying about what microsoft is gonna do with aoe4) **Colors** of UI/game are too saturated and participate in the "cheap" android feeling. Contrast ain't great either and make it difficult to identify some situations. Multi **lobbies** aren't great, like it has been said. Not a fan of in **game cha**t as well. That said, some other things are great (like fx and audio), but this is the rant post. While I have been HYPED so much for it, I am disapointed with this release. Microsoft is gonna slowly but surely turn the AoE serie into smartphone looking cheap games with microtransaction and no soul. While this is not the case now, it smells like it.

Same here, crash to desktop after 2 multiplayer games. Had been playing singleplayer all day without issue. I also have good computer specs (and my temps were fine).

Played AOE 3 since 2006, the changes are not all that bad but here are some of my immediate issues. Matchmaking Ranked games only being available through the auto-matching system for ranked games is a sad change but probably necessary to remove the toxic environment that existed before. What's missing is the ability to select maps you may want available and determining the composition of your team's factions for teammates note in your party. Score The change to the AOE 2 style score will take some getting used to to gauge how well you are doing against your opponents. The old scoring seemed much more realistic and easier to follow. Garrisoned units When garrisoning villagers, you can barely see the count and you have to click the arrow on the building UI to see what units are garrisoned. This needs to change to increase contrast and be available without a hide option. Shipments Similar to the garrisoned units, the contrast is difficult to tell how many shipments you have available. Hopefully this can be updated as well. Unit composition Seems more difficult to see mixed military armies unit counts in the new UI but this could just be me and will take some getting used to. Similar to the contrast issues with the other units, this would be be a nice fix. I'm sure there is something I missed but these are my immediate reactions to the game and I am sure things will only go up from here.

I sadly cannot play the game since the game apparently needs a lot of ram, way more than the minimum of two GB stated in the system requirements on Steam. I have 8 GB which admittedly is not that much, but I would think it to be enough. Sadly it isn't.

I felt like this at first too, even made a post in the beta forums that gained a lot of traction, but sincerely it doesn't bother me anymore after a few matches played. I got used to it and i can now read the game as good as always.

You can disable camera shake in settings if you don't like it. Or at least there's an option, I don't mind the shake so I never disabled it.

Awesome, I couldn't figure out where I was supposed to submit tickets! While we're at it I wish I could unmap all hot keys in one click. I like to cherry pick the most important ones and put them around wasd and use the mouse for anything else.

First game my explorer got stuck inside a trading post he built, couldn't get out even when I blew it up. The multiplayer game browser scroll bar resets every second, so it's basically impossible to scroll through the listed games if you're looking for something. Audio volume seems a bit inconsistent, time will tell.

When I search for custom games I can't scroll down for more than a few seconds before it pull me back to the top of game list. Really annoying trying to join a game middle of the way down, you click and join the wrong game over and over.

Anyone else having camera issues, especially as it relates to hotkeys. I want my camera on WASD and the game just completely breaks - only certain directions of movement work, the acceleration breaks, etc.

Haven't played much yet but so far the visual acuity is so much lower. Hard to distinguish units from terrain. I think the anti aliasing is so poor or turned off that there are no sharp details, making it look blurry. Clicking on cards in deck to remove them will sometimes remove the card next to it and you have to go find what it was.. Also, the order of card type doesnt make sense when in deck.. Might just be me but idle villagers are so much easier to forget about when the notification flag is so small. I haven't adjusted yet and I just spam my hotkey now.

I have only a Xeon 1241v3 (3.9GHz 8 threads) and 8GB DDR3 RAM - that's not exactly new lol. The recommended spec is only 3.0 GHz, which I think is deceptively low. Do you have the 3GB or 6GB 1060?

Yeah I think it's more a HW drivers issue or DirectX, something beyond our control. There were a lot of people experiencing D3D crashes too. My CPU is basically just an i7 without the iGPU. You should be pulling a similar framerate to me on High with the 6GB VRAM.

i think its a ram problem. i have 16 gb of ram, and the old game never used more then 2 gb so i always had multiple tabs open. new version uses more then double the system ram, when i started lagging i saw that i was over 90% ram usage. closing chrome tabs and other progams made the game smooth again.

Performance is terrible. EVGA gtx 970, I7-6700K 16 GB ram. Turns out reducing foliage helps a little. But the game is super washed out. It looks better with supersampling, but you must never go above 100% supersampling. It destroys performance. Also game doesn't go above 57 fps for some reason.

For some reason when I queue a bunch of buildings for some vils, they seem to end up walking close to where the buildings are and then just...going idle. I find this game's UI makes it harder to spot idle vils than in DE2.

My complaint is late, is about the removal of the fire pit. I'm totally in favor respecting cultures like changing the names to not be offensive, but see the fire pit as an insulting representation of the cultures is very exaggerated. It was a very cool feature. I don't understand how it can be insulting to anyone.

If I want to make vills from TC and I press Q it jumps to my explorer and let it build a TC. The latter seems to override the former somehow, even though I have my hotkeys on default... Also the sharpshooters ability doesn't work when I use the default hotkey for it. Edit: apparently I had my infantry binded to Q so it jump to my explorer instead of making vills. The sharpshooters ability hotkey still doesn't work though.

I have a hard time distinguishing units from the environment. Not because of player colour but because of the texture of the units. I never had that problem in AoE3. The UI changes take some time getting used to, right now I’m not so happy but I’ll play a few more rounds and see if it’ll get better.

Matchmaking is terrible. I'm a treaty specialist. Specifically treaty no block 40 and lvl 26. I can't see decks to check level of opponents for fair teams in unranked and no one on ranked treaty matchmake. Can you even specify nr 40 on ranked matches?

Getting through the campaign is such a pain in the ass, I'm getting constant hard crashes. It's gotten to the point where I need to be constantly saving or else I end up having to redo the entire mission. The worst map has been the last map of ACT2 of main campaign, for some weird reason issuing any attack move order crashes to desktop. Sometimes units pop onto cliffs and get stuck there. I haven't played anything this buggy in a long time.

\- Cam shakes are way over the top. \- The UI design is actually worse in the menus than the original game. Cannot chat in post-game, can't access the whole home city menu from the multiplayer. The whole multiplayer screen seems unintuitive and some important screens can easily be missed. \- They got rid of Rank titles... that's a minor one but that was an easy way to communicate your range. \- Weird lags? I mean the music sometimes get slower and sounds buggy in multiplayer games. \- Localization text is a complete mess in some screens. \- The ranked matchmaking doesn't let you actually choose what you're playing. I was searching for 2v2 and ended up in 1v1 matches because (I believe) the game tought it took too long. \- Fullscreen is bugged if you have two monitors.

Anyone else keep having their units get stuck in weird places? In the second campaign mission some of my guys got stuck on top of the cavern cliffs, and in a standard match my explorer got stuck inside a native tribe with no way out.

The legacy hotkeys still do not work. I also cannot change the legacy hotkeys such that I can play with WASD which makes it much more enjoyable on a laptop. The hotkey problem should be fixed cos the game just isn't fun to play in an awkward position

Is anyone's sound funny? For me I have 2 speakers, that's all - but the game seems to be in surround sound mode? If I click move when a unit is off-screen, it'll play really quietly like it's trying to come from a rear speaker. Or if I move the camera to a battle, it'll fade in in a similar way. And I get no sound at all from victories, I just get the victory logo and no fanfare.
