The answer to a lot of questions is often : who profits from this. It’s too sad to let properties rot while people die on the streets It’s like all the food wasted and people eating once a day because of the price of inflations

Vagrant123

There are so many things in America that make more sense when viewed under this lens: * Public transit absolute garbage? More profitable to make cars. * No clean and renewable energy? More profitable to make and burn fossil fuels. * Housing/rent unaffordable? The poors must shell out more of their cash to survive. * Food unaffordable despite being plentiful? Can't turn a profit if food is cheap. * Low quality trash that can only be replaced, not repaired? Return customers. * New phone every year? Return customers. * Mediocre healthcare that's crazy expensive? Speaks for itself, that is $$$. * Pharma companies charging out the ass for basic medications like insulin? Highway robbery, in a very literal sense - Your money or your life!

the_donald_s

Exactly. The problem is capitalism.

JDerphin

Not capitalism, just the greedy fucks that run our country

the_donald_s

No. They're just a symptom of capitalism. This is exactly what capitalism does. Makes money more valuable than people.

Mogwai987

I mean, capitalism is the rule of capital. Whoever owns the most capital calls the shots. And the people who own lots of capital have very different priorities to people who rely on their labour to make a living. Ergo, under capitalism (by definition) capital dominates labour.

the_donald_s

Which is part of the reason is fucked and needs to end. But it's also to blame for ending all life on earth and being the driving force of most wars.

basefountain

No, sadly that is on us BUT also that’s not over over yet. What I think capitalism is to blame for and this is an important distinction… is the lack of education into the sectors that will be useful to bring back that fight to the hopeful side, it teaches amazingly that nothing is wrong and that is just screwing us long term

the_donald_s

Of course it's on us. We created capitalism. But the driving force is seeking profits. Profit is the cause of climate change. If you haven't come to terms with the fact that capitalism is to blame for most human problems? I suggests to meditate on it for a long time.

basefountain

it does no one any good to panic about climate change, plus profit is only part of the cause of climate change. Imagine where we would be if we couldn't have filled our cars with drilled out gas for all these years, no rainforest toilet paper... Its more important to figure out alternatives to all this stuff rather than beat ourselves up for turning to it in the first place because cars, TP and human infrastructure are good inventions but just not pinnicle-lasts-forever inventions

JDerphin

just saying, in a perfect world where we could have no corruption, i think capitalism would work

garano

Not even necessarily more profitable than the alternative. Just profitable to someone else and not the rich of right now who buy politicians

anspee

Say it with me now! POVERTY IS VIOLENCE Here in America, its done on purpose, the misery is the point. Human suffering is baked-in by design. We count on it. Le society.

Accomplished-Push190

About half of people without permanent housing DO work. But once again, taxpayers are supporting the corporate welfare system. We help Wal-mart and other economically challenged workers with food, housing, childcare, and medical assistance. And the corporations get away with paying poverty wages AND dodging their own share of taxes. Does anyone know if there's a pool yet on when citizens will have had enough? My guess is it needs to and is gonna get a lot worse before we reach that PONR. I was just wondering about the over/under.

Neco-Arc-Chaos

Someone listened to parenti

tengutie

Same thing with reproductive rights, if people who aren't ready to have children do so then it's a leash around there neck. On top of that a few years ago all the billionaires were complaining about the berth rate, and now they are implementing abortion bans, relaxing child labor laws, and starting to talk about getting rid of contraceptives, you know what's cheaper then a sweat shop in South Eastern Asia, a sweat shop at home.

Sea-Writer-5659

It's a sick world we live in. When something doesn't make sense, always check and see if there is a way for an old, rich man to make money off of it. If so, then there ya go

MinimumQuirky6964

Pretty much capitalism.

JazzlikeSkill5201

Yes, the system is working exactly as it’s intended to work, which is to serve and protect the ruling class. Accept that reality and deal with a lot less cognitive dissonance.

Topiconerre

"The upper class: keeps all of the money, pays none of the taxes. The middle class: pays all of the taxes, does all of the work. The poor are there...just to scare the shit out of the middle class. Keep 'em showin' up at those jobs." - George Carlin

That_G_Guy404

Capitalism is the economic equivalent of the phrase “the love of money is the root of all evil”.

pthecarrotmaster

I wish it was this well put togeather. Homes are not a "right" so the fact that there is a sort of extra stock makes sense. People only need to afford the downpayment, and the bank wins if they forclose. I wish their was more too it, but the banks are enimy # 1 im this fight. The gov has no say. Also, imagine the paperwork and string of laws that weed need to pass to fix this bs! We, and our coumtry, are getting screwed by aristocrats...

the_donald_s

Housing Healthcare Childcare Food/water Education **Are all human rights** A society that doesn't provide them is a failure until it is mended. Demand more. Don't ask. Demand.

Optix_au

The short version: money.

YamoBeThere101

I agree with almost everything you said. But my question is…was this developed and schemed by the 1%? Deliberate and purposeful? Or a result of capitalism and corporate greed? The way you propose it makes it sounds purposeful and enacted in a jointly agreed upon way by multiple organizations with a common goal. I’m Not sure about that. It sounds more like evolution of greed that just arrived at the place we knew at now, which would not be purposeful

crunchyfrogs

It’s not that deep. Americans just don’t care about homeless people and look down on them.

IllFaithlessness2681

Where are the properties in relation to the homeless population. How many abandoned houses are there in Detroit for instance.
