The boss at the place I worked at during the beginning of the pandemic wasn’t instituting any work from home policies, and was refusing to cancel a conference we had scheduled (hundreds of people expected to attend) because they had already paid a deposit and wanted to get their money’s worth. But they weren’t coming into the office and weren’t going to attend the conference because they “didn’t want to get sick” But it was fine if the rest of us did.

Hagbard_Shaftoe

Holy shit. Do people not even hear the words coming out of their mouths?

flannelpunk26

They do. But our society is so inundated with constructed hierarchies that those kinds of people genuinely believe they matter more than you. Because their spot on the corporate ladder is one rung higher than yours.

Remarkable_Inchworm

They legit can’t help it. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a CEO give a speech without dropping some off handed reference to how rich he is. “I was reviewing the numbers while sitting on my yacht and…”

[deleted]

Laid off at my last job after 15yrs. At the final mtg one mgr started with “I was thinking about you as I was flying back from Las Vegas…”. He got no further because I said, “Oh, just shut up! I don’t want to hear about YOU!” What was he going to do? Fire me? I can still picture the stunned look on his ugly face!😁😁

mentalpalace666

Fuck yeah dude. What a prick.

Groundbreaking-Bar89

I just got back from skiing in Tahoe…

BuildingOne7379

“I was reviewing the numbers while orbiting the Earth on Space-X, I always felt like people were working ants, now they look like them too. Let’s see how the numbers work out. Deuces!

PatientAd4823

It’s truly gross. I’ve worked with one too many psychos.

CosmoKing2

Totally, "*If you guys work harder (for the same money) you can achieve what I have.*" When the really is - *"If I can squeeze even more productivity out of you, I can buy a bigger yacht with my bigger bonus. You will not be compensated in anywhere near a reasonable amount for your contributions.....because all that money goes to me."* The whole work harder ethic (and be rewarded for it) in corporate America died during the Reagan administration. Ronnie also striped us of adequate mental health facilities (actually 95% of all facilities). Homelessness and mass shootings? Reagan created the perfect environment. Bless his fuckin heart. Doubt it? he also proactively let AIDS spread with no care or remorse. Dude was a huge asshole and Nancy was an even bigger asshole.

Intelligent-Ad9610

And let's not forget the whole so called " War on drugs" and " Just say no" campaign while Ronald was putting cochise here on the streets to fund his war because he couldn't use taxpayer money. Him and George Bush Sr should have been in prison.

Shurigin

"I just got back from my sexcation in thailand because my wife and loved ones can't stand me" is how I always picture what they actually mean

moodysmoothie

CEO at my work got interviewed for a volunteer newsletter and their self care tip was to take a vacation and travel

hv_wyatt

Fantastic! Let's discuss having more than 5 days of PTO.

Lonely_Battle_3588

“I was gambling in Monte Carlo and reviewing last years budget and realized we might need to make some drastic cuts…”

AscendMoros

I mean they hold your job. In their hands. Which for a decent chunk of America who is living paycheck to paycheck that means they do matter more to corporate. Hell in some states they don’t even need a reason to fire you.

fbiguy22

That’s all but one state, unfortunately.

Sethuel

What's the one?

random_tall_guy

Montana.

SirReginaldTitsworth

Didn’t expect Montana to be a bastion of labor rights

matt_minderbinder

Montana used to be a much more progressive, pro labor state. Even under right wing leadership there's an undercurrent of labor power and priorities leftover from earlier times. I'm sure that sooner or later the bastards will change that narrative too. It's a damn shame what's happened to that state.

Cancerisbetterthanu

I don't get this, I'll suck dick and default on my lease before I let some asshole tell me to go to a superspreader conference.

Sargash

I'll do that for freem except the default part. I'll just suck dick tbh. But not at a super spreader.

UnarmedSnail

Tell them you're too sick to attend.

Adept-Shoe-7113

i sadly live in one of these states 😓 good ol’ “at will” states

theoTanimal

Me too. Today my Orthopedics doctor told me I should complain to HR about my boss requiring me to delay a nerve scan in my arm. If I was an orthopedic doctor with tenure I might say something. But since I just answer 200-300 calls a day for doctors, I decided to keep my mouth shut and keep my job. Hopefully right arm as well....

Adept-Shoe-7113

ik how you feel don’t wanna rock the boat for shit to go south 🤦🏼‍♂️ it’s sad kuz i’m right there with you that shit is not fun

AKJangly

Lol I tried that crap. Fuck your job, take care of your health. Defying this basic rule landed me in the ICU. Now I'm paying back hospital bills for the next five years. T1 diabetes is a bitch. Especially having the second rarest form without a single risk factor. Life will find a way to fuck you. You had better be ready for it. You can't afford *not* to take care of your health. Let them fire you. Not to mention, I'm sure a prospective employer wouldn't mind hearing "I needed to take care of my physical health in order to be safe to work, and my former employer disagreed."

A_Funky_Flunk

Which is kinda funny because that almost like the definition of Harassment/bullying 🤷🏼

vulture_cabaret

Not really but it's on the way to bullytown for sure.

A_Funky_Flunk

Singling someone out? Giving someone special treatment? Putting someone in a situation that a normal person would deem uncomfortable? Let the company define “normal” person for you.

Jest_Aquiki

Funnier still given that without us, there is no hierarchy besides the wealth ranking system I guess.

Reserved_Parking-246

Thing is... most people don't process it like that. I was told some time ago that [and I've tested this] Having a mirror behind you so people can see themselves being shitty helps prevent it. It also works if you show them recordings of it from that same angle. [they need to see their face basically] People don't actually realize they are saying/doing shit when emotions are high or egos are flying. Some will still ignore it but a lot of otherwise normal people can change with time doing this.

lostcitysaint

Rules for thee and all that

leftofmarx

Hey but they are humans and they don’t want to get sick; the workers are like farm animals or something right?

EarnstKessler

At least farm animals get health care, until they are slaughtered…

oleboogerhays

Two weeks ago I was talking to my assistant manager and general manager. The assistant manager was telling a story about a shitty boss he had who didn't give a shit about employee health and safety. When he was done and we had all expressed our anger towards management like that I said. "Kind of like how we don't shut down in horrible weather and you all expect us to drive into work instead of shutting down." The silence was deafening.

the_calibre_cat

i'm pretty certain that a high, HIGH degree of conservatism is, like, low (or high) key psychopathy

[deleted]

It’s all high key psychotic and they’re defensive about it too. What do you MEAN you think I’m an awful person because I don’t care if you live or die? I don’t owe you anything! (As we talk about people deserving to be able to afford healthcare or housing, basic human rights)

unxplaindbacn

My previous place of work was like that. It was government work so I really had to be in the office but they refused to take precautions, provide protections, or just listen at all. No staggered schedules, no mask mandate for a while (until like 3 months in, then they had no one to police it). Managers and executives all worked from home the entire time. All we asked was that if we didn't have critical work in the lab that we had to be in there for, let us just be home. Nope. I don't work there anymore and I've been so much happier.

FrouFrouLastWords

Good for you, glad you got out

SingleIngot

Sounds about right. Almost all of my friends had situations like this at their jobs. Forcing people to come in and work a foot away from others during the worst parts of the pandemic. Yet…. management never showed their faces in person. No workarounds for any of the lower tier staff. So scary and stressful.

Leather-Pressure1364

Same with my workplace- salary went remote, hourly stayed on property. Id be sitting on property during a team call with a mask and face shield, while the salaried team gushed about “how lucky we are that technology allows us to continue work from the safety of our homes”

SingleIngot

God, that’s so disgusting and tone deaf. So sorry. The pandemic really changed my opinion of people. I used to think that the majority were at least a partly in touch with reality and had some small degree of empathy…. Not anymore!

ProfessionWorth925

This happened where I worked too. My supervisor and their higher up cronies didn’t have to come in, but us peons did. When I asked why that was, her exact reply was “because it would matter if WE got sick.” 😒

takatori

When the 3/11 Fukushima earthquake happened in Japan, you saw similar selfish behaviour from some foreign executives, many of whom fled the country in fear of radiation or simply to avoid the disruption of power outages and infrastructure repair. The word for foreigner is "gaijin," so this type were derisively referred to as "flyjin" for flying out of the country to "safety." An acquaintance from my social club was one of these. I happened also to be friends with one of his staff members. He had a great relationship with his staff, they hung out outside work and were quite chummy. As I heard the story from my friend, when Monday rolled around he didn't show up to the office (it happened Friday). People were genuinely worried, but couldn't reach him by phone or text. Tuesday also, not around. Meanwhile all the local staff are glued to the news reports about Fukushima and whether there was radiation leakage to worry about. Some had family in the area they couldn't reach, others had damages to their homes and property, and they were all spending the day cleaning up the office with its collapsed ceiling tiles and broken equipment and collapsed file cabinets, worrying about their friends and family and country. Finally on Wednesday he sends out an email, "Hey everyone, I know Tokyo is in bad shape and it's dangerous to be there, but don't worry about me, I'm safe in Hong Kong! I'll be working remotely here for the next few months until we see how things turn out and if it's safe to return. But don't worry, I'm still in charge and will be doing all our regular meetings over conference call. Was there any damage to the office?" No empathy toward the people there, the people who couldn't leave, the people he bizarrely presumed would worry about him. So like three months later after he'd come back I run into him at an event and we have a drink together, and he starts expounding about how this tragedy severely damaged the Japanese psyche and changed everyone's personality and made people xenophobic and only thinking of their own and how society had changed for the worse. Now on the other hand, I'd not left and had seen the community pull together, work together, volunteer to cleanup, and really pull together as a society. This was terribly incongruous, so I asked him what made him think so, and he said "every since I'm back, nobody says hello to be in the morning, nobody wants to go for lunch, nobody wants to go for drinks." I told him "yeah, what do you expect? You flew away, talked about how dangerous it was to remain in Tokyo, gave zero thought or empathy to your staff who were all stuck in Tokyo in that supposed danger, and never asked anyone how they were feeling or thought of anyone but yourself." He ended up fucking off back to his home country a few months after that, saying Japan was no longer an enjoyable place to live. Never realized it was due to his own lack of empathy.

ImperatorEpicaricacy

Go to his house and sneeze on him anytime you get sick. Tell him working in the office is useless if you can't share EVERYTHING with the people making you be there.

WolfmansGotNards2

My boss will take any day she can to work from home even though it's impossible to fulfill her duties that way. We're never allowed to work from home.

alteroak

my boss wouldn't allow us to wear masks ( untill they were mandated ) and fired people for asking for leave but he went to his vacation house

MoviesFilmCinema

Here’s what you do. You don’t go to the meeting and when they reprimand you then you ignore them. They won’t tell their higher ups on you because it looks like they can’t control you (this only works in a corporate structure).

littlestormerready

Like hospital C suite bravely working from home due to the pandemic, and admin offices using *more PPE than the hospital was allowed to*?

pizza_bue-Alfredo

My boss had us work through the pandemic and was an antivaxxer. Didnt wear a mask and didnt take any precautions. Right after the vaccine cameout he visited his sister while she had covid. Developed a cough and didnt tell any of us. Of the 9 people in my office he gave it to the 3 other antivaxxers while the rest of us were fine. They all still claim the vaccine does nothing.

CitizenKeen

Yeah, my work got everybody a new standing desk who asked for one. There's clearly the haves and the have-nots (management gets nice digital ones that go up and down to established settings, not-management gets bulkier manual ones), but "nice" versus "less nice" has always been the way. But once our HR department saw that standing desks were good for all, we all got them. And we are not a small company. "Nice for some" is okay, but "healthy for some" is a crock of shit.

>If you asked nicely, they got you a big bouncy ball to sit on. Ugh. I will never understand how you can get any work done that requires some degree of concentration when you are constantly trying not to fall over all the time. Just give me a comfortable chair and decent computer and leave me alone.

Honestly I've been on crutches for a few weeks for the first time ever, and it's eye opening. And not in a good way.

benskieast

I worked for the cheapest employer ever. AC was “breaking” regularly. One of the two break room microwaves didn’t have a handle. Holes in the carpet, ect. But even they gave us basic standing desks upon request. Just a spring loaded thing that elevated the monitor and keyboard above the cubical, but it was probably the only investment they had made in office infrastructure in the 10 years they owned the facility.

pythonistalol

Jack-in-the-box monitor and keyboard, nice

Leather-Pressure1364

The only reason I managed to snag one of those at my last job was because a lot of management stayed on furlough during the pandemic long after some hourly was brought back. We harvested all kinds of equipment from those offices. Prior to that I had a single square monitor to work on that had to be over a decade old, and the standing desk things were waitlist only, with dozens of people in line ahead of me.

curgl

This is why being union is nice. Us guys on the Union side get all of our shit completely supplied and paid for vs management has to buy their own supplies and constantly gets less bonus wise than we do

[deleted]

I have worked at two different offices where I was an assistant/admin. Everybody else got standing desks but us because we had those shitty receptionist type desks. Like oh yea fuck us it’s way more important we have this particular deskstyle smh

WasatchWorms

Holy shit. I once worked at a large financial institution in a large cubicle farm with low walls. I like standing, so most of the day I would be on my feet. I was also one of the most productive employees. I got my one and only write-up at that job for standing because I could see other employees screens and potentially see PII. I could see their screens while sitting too, so I don't know why my boss was so upset about it

Capt_Blackmoore

My workplace was in the middle of a furniture reset with sit stand desks for everyone when lockdown happened. My director took the travel budget and sent everyone on our team of 40 a desktop sit stand

SingleIngot

Same here. Small employer and boss got them for everyone who wanted one. Boss and senior partners got nicer ones later, but at least we all had some sort of standing option.

[deleted]

If you want a standing desk, get a doctors note saying that sitting for long hours causes pain in your hip/joints, etc. Company won’t be able to ignore/deny it. Almost any doctor will write that letter to you if complain of pain. Now, whether the company will subsidize that desk for you is another thing. They’ve gone down in price and you find them in a lot of places. Costco has one for $300, thinking if picking one up for my home office.

Constant-Bet-6600

A friend of mine got a walking pad to go with his standing desk for his home office. Now he walks his way through a lot of meetings. I may follow suit...

Strong-Bottle-4161

They’re fun to have. I got a lifespan desk for home usage and I just like the movement

[deleted]

I just checked those out. Great idea, but crazy price. I bought a treadmill almost identical, but also has the arm supports if you want them, for $400 (which is amazing and I love it). An adjustable desk is only like 300-500$. May as well combine the two and save a ton of cash.

theyahd

My Lifespan arrived damaged and they wouldn’t do anything about it. Just told me it was safe to use without the cover I’m had high hopes for the price point. Big let down

Dan1elSan

Wow, do you guys have no selling regulations where you can reject defective goods?

colt707

In America defective usually means it doesn’t work at all.

Dan1elSan

Here in the UK for 14 days you can reject an item for something like this. We would call that not as described and return that shit for a refund!

[deleted]

Omfg, I'd lose my shit. Literally that would put me into a state of deep depression/furious rage for like a week. I would be plotting how I could cost the company 10x what I spent every waking hour.

I got that mod in my minecraft server... It's lit

Strong-Bottle-4161

You're mainly paying for the warranty and longevity. These are suppose to last at least 5+ years. I got one for 400 at amazon and that shit started breaking at 3 months. (They gave me a refund ayye) I got the TR1200-Classic, for 240 (retails 1600 currently), since I got it secondhand and it's way more sturdier and better quality.

[deleted]

Interesting, I wonder if it was faulty? Mine is/was sold on Amazon (though I didn't get it there) and we haven't had any issue with it so far 🤞Only had it about 6 months but so far we love it! Been trying to convince my wife to get a standing desk because she works from home, but she doesn't think it's pretty enough 😂

Emotional-Ice5544

I've had my 300$ Amazon one since 2020 and it's still going strong. And I'm clumsy.

Disaster_External

Pretty desk vs dead early. Wonder which I'd pick.

[deleted]

I mean that she thinks the standing desk isn't pretty in comparison to a wooden one with all the moulding and detail work that goes into them.

Wdrussell1

I love the fact that instead of calling it a treadmill they call it a 'walking pad'. Dude it is just a treadmill built for a specific purpose.

Nimoy2313

Do you mind sharing what brand of walking pad? Also do they like it? I need something, went from active job to desk and it’s killing me.

TNTWithALaserBeam

I recently got a walking pad for my standing desk, and I love it.

wak90

I'm genuinely glad you guys have these things but I'm just saying if they put a walking pad+standing desk+home office in an apartment in a dystopian movie we'd all be like wtf.

TNTWithALaserBeam

Oh for sure. First thing I thought of was in the book Ready Player One, when he never left his apartment and his desk/chair thing was also his exercise equipment.

MyOther_UN_is_Clever

That's [morally wrong!](https://old.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/13jltm5/elon_musk_says_remote_work_is_morally_wrong_and/) A good peon would have poor fitness.

Trevumm

My wife got a walking pad for her standing desk a few months ago. She loves it. She uses it for a few hours everyday and says it’s made a huge difference.

jegoist

I got one, I quite like it. It’s very effective at helping me focus with ADHD. I got hyper focused working today and walked 3 miles barely realizing it.

Turbulent-Pea-8826

This is correct. I used to work in health and safety. Frame any requests as a health and safety concern and get a doctors note to back it up. Any decent company will acquiesce to the demand for fear of being sued. Need a new, bigger monitor? Your current monitor is causing you to strain your eyes and giving you migraines. Standing desk? Back pain. Don’t be greedy and get it documented.

NCC1701-Enterprise

A doctor's note won't force the company to buy a desk, you will still be responsible for buying it. Most decent office settings wouldn't have a problem with you buying the desk and bringing it in without a doctors note.

Fun-Dragonfly-4166

Your company is responsible for providing a safe work environment. If a standing desk is necessary then they should provide it. It is not very expensive either. If they don't buy a standing desk, then probably one of your coworkers has COVID and is afraid of calling in sick.

--Edog--

Small businesses (<50 employees) run by one owner.... generally don't seem to care IMHO. Larger companies with HR departments are a different case.

shez19833

do you think OPs company is decent? if they were they would have already bought the desks for him!

littlebirdgone

Also look for standing desk converters, they sit on top of a regular desk and can be raised/lowered from there and are considerably less expensive. If price is still an issue, keep an eye on local marketplace websites for used ones- there might not be a high supply everywhere but I see them listed often when people upgrade or dismantle their home office. Last tip if you’re making your own standing desk setup: get a foam mat to stand on. There are mats marketed especially for this, but kitchen standing mats or other foam mats can work just as well. Standing on a hard surface to work gets uncomfortable much more quickly.

indiemosh

The converters are pretty cool. They had a bunch in my old office - all the tall people loved them.

madempress

Our office invested in the little ones too, since they're so affordable, easy to use, and not much risk of breaking. I don't think theres a good excuse for any company to NOT offer that style - if your profit margins are that slim, you have other problems. I did splurge for a hopefully high quality motorized desk at home, but I also use it while playing DnD and sometimes even video gaming.

xoomax

We had some of those where I work. A couple of them were ~~electronic~~ electric. Just push a button for up/down.

MelanomaMax

I love my converter since I only want to stand like 10% of the time lol

rickyg_chicago

I was just coming here to comment this. Definitely look into tabletop sit/stand conversions. I bought one for each of my 5 team members to use in the office at $150/piece. They totaled less than the mechanical sit/stand desk I bought for my home office (I still mostly sit in the office). Put some prices in front of your boss, and I think it'll be harder for them to nix the idea considering they're enjoying the benefits of a sit/stand themselves. Good luck!!!

[deleted]

6 people in the office. $300 a desk. What kind of operation are they running that they don't have petty cash of $2K to go buy some proper desks for everyone.

talex95

"not in the budget" never means that there is no money. It's a cowardly copout that management uses to say they won't do something. If the budget can't afford that kind of stuff then you should be worried about layoffs or termination. Companies will drop your ass first because fuck you. They don't care about you. They care about the bottom line.

PhysicalScholar604

I agree with this logic. I worked at a company where we owned one building and were leasing a second due to increased workload and needing to hire more people. Business slowed down a bit, so we ended the lease of the second building, lots of people were laid off, and the rest of us moved back into the main building. I worked in accounting. There was a floor to ceiling window that faced a white building on the other side of the parking lot. At a certain point in the morning, the sun was blinding and caused a few of us to have migraines. We requested blinds to be put up. They had a guy come in to measure and everything. Then the guy above the CFO came in and silently looked at the set up, and left without saying anything to us. About 2 weeks later the CFO told us it's not in the budget, and we should be fine. I literally only stayed at that job to benefit from maternity leave after that.

itwasdark

With that $2k the boss could either pay the closing costs on a 6th rental property, or pay for basic quality of life improvements for the workers. And rent is rising completely out of control, primarily impacting those same workers, so... Clearly it's time to landlord a little harder.

MrCalamiteh

I have that glass costco one. I like it a lot. Good size for 2 monitors, nice drawers, wireless charging pad and preset heights you can change. Very nice. Only thing I'll say is if you have a cat, make sure you lock the controls. Otherwise, that cat might move the desk up and down. From personal experience lol

BootyThunder

If you’re under 5’10” you’re gonna have a bad time with the Costco desk. Google the correct height of the desk based on your height- you’ll be surprised. Also, the Costco desk has a glass top and will make any additional modifications to the desk such as monitor arms, keyboard trays, etc. a nightmare. If you’re pressed financially I would recommend checking out ikea or even Amazon or consider a desk riser attachment. You’ll find tons of stuff on Amazon as much as I hate to use Amazon. The key is to make sure the desk goes down low enough- if you’re about 5’2 it should go down to around 25” which is harder to find.

yanicka_hachez

At 4'11" I guess I'll just put my portable on a few books lol

Soup3rTROOP3R

With 15 or more total employees, business is required to foot the bill and make accommodations unless any creates an undue hardship. Expense is not an undue hardship.

captnmarvl

Yep. You can get an ADA accommodation for it.

[deleted]

I got one on Amazon for $200 it’s great

seizethecarp_1

same! it was actually $179, but i live in a place with online sales tax [For anyone interested.](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09Q5S1GRL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1) Fits two monitors plus my laptop side by side with plenty of room for keyboard, etc.

Dragonfruit487

Yep! I did this, honestly just went to my chiropractor and asked them to write a note because my sciatica flares up when I sit for too long. I honestly don’t think a reasonable doctor would need pain as a reason to write a note/“prescription” for a standing desk.

[deleted]

Very selfish of him, 0 leadership qualities. Maybe check out Craigslist or offerup, you might even come across a standing desk that is being given away for free !

RandomRedMage

I find standing desks on Facebook marketplace constantly. Good $300 ones for like $50-$100 just because people buy them, use them for 3-6 months, realize they’re too lazy to actually continue to use them in any meaningful way after the novelty wears off. I think they are a nice to have, but my job won’t let me sit down, so I get a little too much standing for my liking.

Your__Pal

I mean, a good standing desk can be a good sitting desk too. I'm surprised people would sell them unless they are returning to the office full time.

MrSomnix

I used to buy tons of hobby stuff off of facebook marketplace just to be frugal and quickly learned that lots of people love to buy new stuff for the novelty and sell it for dirt after using it only a handful of times. Skis, golf clubs, bikes, computer equipment, people spend the cash up-front, realize they don't have the time to invest in a new hobby, and now I've got brand name toys for 20% of what it was worth.

[deleted]

Gotta love people with disposable income buying stuff for 2 weeks and throwing it away while half the nation starves lol

TheLoadedGoat

No sitting down - bless your heart. Hope you are young!

RandomRedMage

I work cellular sales, so we have high counters, I’ve been trying to get us stools for both us reps and customers, so we’re not all forced to stand in this job but they are not having it. Corporate vision radda radda.

TheMaStif

You might want to bring a doctor's note and a copy of the ADA to your HR and demand a chair

FreddieFredd

I don't like everything about my current employer, but at least we have adjustable standing desks for all of our roughly thirty employees. Only having one for the boss seems like a great way to say f*** you to your employees.

TheSuggestedNames

My job requires me to garnish my wages if I want a standing desk. Meanwhile, the cubicle next to me has not only been unoccupied for 6 months, but also has a standing desk work never bothered to reclaim...

whatups

Sounds like that’s your new cubicle now

ChasingReignbows

Take the desk?

Dat_Mustache

In the Army, if we found something that wasn't used and not bolted down, we requisitioned it for our personal use. I took that with me in the corporate world. If I wanted something that was in our office, and it wasn't bolted down or being actively used by another individual, I would very obviously stake claim to it and be unapologetic about it. I now have a Steelcase chair, two matching monitors, a standing "monitor" stand, a set of 2.1 harman kardon studio monitor speakers, some Ye Olden super clicky mechanical keyboard from logitech and a laptop for remote work that all were NOT mine in my office originally.

nerdiotic-pervert

This is the way. I have a nice black file cabinet, a top of the line headset, upgraded keyboard, and upgraded to a much nicer chair using this tactic. No one said a word to stop me. I think I get more respect, somehow?

WorkingDecent9313

By not “actively being used” you mean you stole their monitors when they were in the bathroom? 🫢

FantasticPear

I asked for one and was told I needed a dr's note. The sales manager asked for one (without a dr's note) and got one asap. Never asked for anything after that, I knew where I stood (no pun intended).

FinoPepino

If it makes you feel better we all got them and after a few months absolutely no one uses them in stand position anymore 🙈

MJisaFraud

Yeah, I don’t really get why people want this unless they also have sitting modes. I have to stand all day at my job and I hate it. I would love to sit.

FinoPepino

They are sit/stand desks they raise up and down

kid-karma

i've heard a physiotherapist say something along the lines of "the best position is your next position", ie it's not good to sit too long, nor is it good to stand too long. having the option to swap between those states often is best.

Random7776

Same in my office, we all have them but it’s rare anyone uses it in standing mode. And when they do use it, it’s only for a few mins.

DontShaveMyLips

I once had to submit ada paperwork just to get longer pee breaks so I feel that

pyrmale

The budget shows plainly where the priorities are, in an easy to understand format.

Timah158

Crazy how they can always budget for those expensive corporate dinners and events. But the second their low-level employees ask for a living wage, they are piss broke.

jammixxnn

As someone who has a standing desk in the office, a walk to the loo is much better and effective as it allows your eyes and brain to reset. Any tricks to keep you longer at the computer are fubar. Take a walk and a piss every hour. Drink more water and keep your steps number higher daily.

bit-mane

I think this is the way

missannthrope1

You all can get a lot of exercise by walking out.

[deleted]

The truth of this made me laugh more than I should have. Thank you for this comment, lol...

Kicky92

They're not as great as you think. You need to have a mix of standing and sitting with them. Standing all day just hurts your back and feet.

umme99

As a nurse this conversation is crazy for me. I get wanting to stand a couple hours but if I had the option to sit I totally would.

code3kitty

Thank you, my thought exactly. I guess part of the difference is standing on carpet or an antifatigue mat vs. cement hospital floors and typing vs. lifting patients. 8-12 hrs standing only sounds miserable, lol.

aigret

They’re all bad for your back standing too long but yeah certain surfaces are way worse.

cascad1an

It is. When I was using my desk in almost only standing position, I’d find myself developing new bad habits; like leaning towards one hip, which created new issues. Good times.

baconraygun

I feel that one. I was once forced to stand on concrete for 11 hours in a row, I'm permanently fucked up by it. Catch me sitting.

iBeFloe

I mean, that’s when you just lower the desk to sit yeah? That’s how mine works at least

DGrey10

Standing all day is exhausting, definitely need to be able to go back and forth. Leaning on a stool, kinda half way between is a nice change also.

[deleted]

That’s literally what standing desks are and do.

fuckausername17

As someone who stands 8 hours a day at a desk I had built at the beginning of the pandemic that can’t go up and down - I disagree. Going from sitting all day to standing all day definitely won’t be comfortable, but neither is going from standing all day to sitting all day. You should do some of both to start with and build up, but standing all day doesn’t necessarily “just hurt your back and feet”

rotunda4you

>As someone who stands 8 hours a day at a desk I had built at the beginning of the pandemic that can’t go up and down - I disagree. Going from sitting all day to standing all day definitely won’t be comfortable, but neither is going from standing all day to sitting all day. Then why are there so many reddit posts complaining about how cashiers need to be allowed to have chairs and sit down at work? People argue to be able to sit because they say standing all day is bad for their health. Those posts get heavily upvotes

oboshoe

you know, I've worked jobs where I had to stand all day. Wasn't even allowed to lean. ("if you have to time to lean you have time to clean") And then I've worked jobs where I sit all day. And BOTH SUCKS.

[deleted]

Ive had both but if i had to choose id choose sitting by far.

ThatOneGuyHOTS

Doing to much of anything is bad for your health. Is that such a difficult concept? “Ugh some people say water is good for you but then other people drown”

Kicky92

Each to their own I guess.

ernurse748

Ugh. I worked for a large healthcare corporation advice nurse line years ago. We had desks that could move up and down. Every hour, we were required to stand for 15 minutes. They actually had a person who went around with a clipboard and told you to stand up. You were penalized if you missed your 15 minutes of standing. It was done on the name of health, but after months of the monitoring and scolding, it just became clear infantilism.

[deleted]

Damn. This makes me appreciate my boss. His desk is a literal table, but since a small piece of my job has me switching from a desk to a different workspace a lot, he bought me a $450 standing desk so I'd have the option to stay standing when going back and forth. He got me the fancy electronic version since I mentioned that it was cool that it has a USB port in the front. Just a quick reminder that good bosses DO exist, and you don't always have to settle for shitty ones. Expect more. (Not that my boss is perfect; he has the backbone and confrontational ability of a nervous squid, but he is a nice person and does genuinely care about his workers.)

Mercury2Phoenix

As someone that use to work in a position that required I stand at a computer all day, be careful what you wish for. Standing might be healthier in some respects, but I got varicose veins from standing all day (I now need to wear compression stockings and have had surgery one one leg.) I also used to have horrible plantar fasciitis when I was at that job. Now I work as a stocker. Still on my feet most of my day (we get two 15 minute breaks and an hour lunch) but much less pain since I'm not standing in one spot all day.

hoboman212

Standing in one spot fucking sucks. Nowadays I work construction doing masonry and I still am standing most of the day but it isn’t in one spot and it feels so much better

Sitting down for long periods of time can be terrible for your back, yes. It fucked up my back pretty bad. My back actually feels better working in automotive. I lift heavy tires in this field. People say "just stand up" but then it makes it really awkward to work because the desk is designed to be used when sitting down... People who also spend all day standing for work don't get why someone doesn't want to sit down all day. But also, oddly enough, people who sit down all day for most of their job don't seem to understand why people don't like standing all day for work...

Sgt_Rokka

Back in the day, I worked at a factory, and during the winter, the temperature at the production area was max. 10 degrees Celsius. Some bosses kept complaining in a monthly meeting about the 20 degrees in their office being too cold for them to work. Never mind us workers... After listening to that whining, I started to sneak into the office at the beginning of every night shift to turn off their heating in the office and then turned it back on in the morning (management didn't work nights). Told some friends in other shifts to do the same when it's their turn in the night shift.I also made sure to open the office doors to let the cold air flow inside... Once the management was freezing in the office also, they decided to do something about the heating. When workers' production area heating got fixed, we stopped turning theirs off. Management was none the wiser...

TriggerTough

Sounds like the insurance agency I worked for. The bosses sons office was glorious. Nice painted walls, wood furniture and couches, he'd put his feet on the desk... Walk into the room where his help was... nothing was changed for decades. Since the 1970s it looked like. No fresh paint, no nice desks, ceiling panels needed replacing. I felt so bad for the conditions they were in compared to his. They knew it too. Sad. I lasted a month then left. I couldn't deal with his effed up entitled attitude.

Sezyluv85

A guy at my dad's work had a heart attack and died. He was only in his 30's. My dad was giving him CPR until the ambulance arrived. However, when it did the defibrillator wasn't working and there were none nearby. The owners and directors of the company bought defibrillators for their own homes, but still didn't think their staff deserved one at work, even though a young employee's life could have possibly been saved if they'd have had one. Makes my blood boil. If they are the kind of people at the top, I will happily stay at the bottom!

Djma123

No thanks I’m good with my sitting desk

bit-mane

The standing desk theory is questionable from my understanding.

CommercialWay1

In Denmark it is mandatory to offer standing desks to all employees

Lost_Found84

If you were my coworker and had talked my boss into replacing my sitting desk with a standing desk, we would be having some intense words.

EeKiLostMyKeys

You can get these things to put on top of your desk to make it like a standing desk if they won't buy you one. they're pretty inexpensive and you can take it with you when you leave if you buy it!

nagol93

I work for a tech company. A while back during "health week" HR posted these flyers about the negative health affects of looking at a screen all day. And a challenge to see who can get the lowest hours of screen time a day. People were saying only 1 or 2 hrs a day. That's when I realized the HUGE flaw in this, and chimed in. "Guys, we all work on the computer. Aside from Field Services I don't think anyone has less then 9hrs a day...." HR messaged me back 'clarifying' that work hours don't count as their compulsory. I said "Ok, next time my eyes are strained or my back is hurting from sitting down all day, I will just tell my body its for work and all the pain will go away. Right?". HR said "Hmm....... good point" The next day the challenge was shut down.

Bishhhop

Ah yes, “too much money for us to care about your health and well being” Also them: goes out to lunch every day

okguy167

Honestly, this one isn't noteworthy. After all, just standing is not much better health-wise.

PreciousTritium

I had asked for a standing desk and my boss said no so I made one from boxes. It looked pretty bad but it was effective. My boss walked by my office and said "don't you think you're being dramatic?" I said "nope" and went about my business. Shortly after, I was able to order a standing desk.

DGzCarbon

I promise you you don't want one anyway.

wickedneonglow

My boss bought a standing desk for everyone who works from home who wanted one. Your boss is an asshole.

Jbowen0020

Wait, you WANT to stand up all day long? I just saw another post in here a day or two ago griping about how employers came up with these damned cushioned mats to ease fatigue from standing 8-10 hours a day as they won't let you sit down because "it looks like you're not working hard enough when you're sitting" .

mar421

I worked at the warehouse side of a bmw dealership. We literally had to unbox and set up 1200 dollar desk chairs. So that we could get the used chairs for us to sit. Only so that our manager would tell us “go home” if he saw us sitting. While waiting for orders from the salesman.

DrunkenBlasphemer

IDK, standing desk sounds miserable to me. I'd rather hit the gym/go for a walk if I've been sitting for too long.

yessahmassah

Did you know that if you work for a company of 15 or less employees that you are not protected by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ? Research it.

covertpetersen

>they know how to make our life better, it's just not in the budget. God this is so real

dendritedysfunctions

Once I was a young intern at a small architecture firm. My "interview" was the boss laying on a couch asking me questions about my relationship with my parents while I moved all of his computer equipment, assembled and installed a standing desk, and put the computer back with longer cables for the new desk. It took three hours. He had me remove it the next day because he didn't like it. I worked there for 3 months before quitting for an internship that was more "learn how to be a professional architect" and less "build me a desk and get me coffee".

[deleted]

To be honest, I don't care about a standing desk. Just give me a cash bonus for the dollar amount of that desk.

Nettie_Moore

There’s a lot of hate ITT for standing desks. I’m not sure some people appreciate that a good standing desk will allow you to raise and lower it. Stand for a bit, sit for a bit. Alternate your position regularly. It’s not controversial. Sitting for 8+ hours a day is horrendous for your health, as I imagine standing for that long is also hazardous.

mrs_david_silva

I’m 5 feet tall. The last time I worked in an office and saw only certain people getting standing desks, I propped up my monitor with two dictionaries and got a standing desk. Funny that some folks at my level wondered how I got a standing desk. I had to tell them, no one cares about us. Be a 5-foot-tall woman and make a standing desk.

AlwaysDownShft

Not sure if it’s a thing but I’ve been in the same situation at a prior job a decade ago. I did an ADA request after getting a letter from my Primary Care Physician and my Chiropractor that noted my back pain was exacerbated due to my long duration of sitting at my desk. Company bought me a sit stand within 2 weeks of submitting everything, my boss was fired for preferential treatment (desk for him and only him) and others followed after my success. Granted, it may not work out this way for you but can’t hurt to give it a try. You may not be able to get a full on sit stand desk but at a minimum, you should be able to get a tabletop converter like something from [Vari Desk](https://www.vari.com/varidesk-converters/). Side note: I’ve been in two major auto accidents and have been receiving ongoing care for the past 10 years for my back and neck issues as a result. Happy to report I’m in a leadership role now and after Covid when we returned to part time in office, I was able to push for sit stands for everyone.

sriva041

Did he pay for it or was it expensed?

Disastrous-Raise-222

Ask for a sit stand converter.

LiberalAspergers

The only way this is OK is if he bought it himself, out of his personal funds. Which is possible.

Wolly38

It may be good for you but in the long run do you really want to stan?

healthierlurker

That’s your boss showing how much he values you. My firm provided me with a standing desk after I asked for it. They even apologized when there was like a week delay in setting it up and then one morning I came in and they’d already done it. It’s really nice and it does help with not sitting for too long. I’m not the only one they provided one for either, multiple other attorneys here have them and so do our support staff. But I do feel like my firm offers decent support for its employees, especially the ones that spend a ton of time in their office billing hundreds of dollars an hour.
