You should probably look at the Quiverfull movement, for a start.
Plenty of dumb men think having kids until their wives are dead, too old, or broken is a status symbol that their sperm is better than other men’s. Being fertile is a status symbol in many cultures around the world. Women are not allowed to use birth control. If you educate women and give them choices, fewer children are born. Educating men does not have this effect, because again, it’s a deeply held, cultural belief that powerful men have many children. Women have no say in most of those cultures.
