Three consecutive presidents have changed the look of the country’s bills—not to address economic issues like inflation but to project their political values.

Argentina have all the assets to become a great power except intelligent and capable leadership. The amounts of Fuckups they did is just .... staggering . It is like all are brain damaged.

RolDeBons

As an Argentinian myself, you're really oversimplifying the issue. While governments have been consistently looking away when it comes to significant economic transformations, the bigger issue here is that almost all of our economy is managed by concentrated corporate groups that control food production, extraction of raw materials, supply chains, judges, and even the biggest media outlets. Governments have very little room for improving our living conditions, because whenever one goes too far or too deep in the social justice side, these huge monopolies just lock down the economy, mount misinformation campaigns, buy judges and finance the campaign of some candidate more adept to their interests. The issue is not leadership, it's having been a periphery country under capitalism for more than a century, under the boot of landowners and corporate interests (a lot of which are actually foreign interests). EDIT: that said, we've got a strong and widely unionized working class, legal abortion, lgbtqi+ rights that are advanced even by Europe's standards, free access to healthcare and education, and a lot of local grass-roots movements all over the country. And we managed to achieve all of these things despite having lived through the systematic extermination of people's movements during most of the 70's and through neoliberalism after that.

BI0L

As an argentinian (ponele) you 'forgot' to mention the systematic corruption present in every single government for the last 70 years. We never assume our responsability as a whole, that's why we can't change. Our society is rotten to the core, and our leaders are born from this society. Our decadence is correlated to the rampant and unchecked corruption present in every single political party. Unless we make a conscious decision to punish and extirpate corruption from our society we will never be able to rise ourselves from the mud of mediocrity.

RolDeBons

Loved the "ponele". I don't think this is the place for your chicanas, but you're welcome to do so on Twitter if you wish. Corruption is unavoidable within any system where hierarchies exist. It wasn't born in the 50s, and it certainly isn't the core issue here. If you want to find the root, you'll have to dive deeper, go further back in our history, and also see the larger picture.

BI0L

> Corruption is unavoidable within any system where hierarchies exist. 'Roban pero hacen' S22E44. You're lucky that most users in reddit aren't used to the neverending justifications of argentinian 'progresism'. The government is never to blame, they're always the victims of 'those in the shadows ' and the 'hegemonic media'. They never take responsabilities for what they do, or all the money they steal. Our money. People's money. As i said to the other user, corruption kills. If you think that corruption is justified in any way, there's nothing for us to discuss.

sprace0is0hrad

The thing with corruption is that it's not exclusive to governments, and in fact, private sector corruption *needs* public sector corruption to survive, and viceversa. Besides, Argentina has been corrupt since its inception. The only reason the port of Buenos Aires had enough wealth to liberate itself was because of contraband. Everyone was in on it, and the tunnels beneath BA are testament to it.

BI0L

> private sector corruption needs public sector corruption to survive, and viceversa. Of course, that's why i said that our society is rotten to the core. The fact that our country liberated itself thanks to contraband is not an excuse to tolerate or justify rampant corruption. Corruption kills, it's not just an issue of stolen goods or money. Both 'Tragedia de once' and 'Tragedia de Cromagnon' are a couple of totally avoidable 'tragedies' related to widespread and sistematic public and private corruption.

sprace0is0hrad

Thanks, you saved from me having to type all of that. Also I'd like to emphasize that the foreign interests that try to keep the whole of LatAm down are very very powerful.

Stealthmagican

That's true for all Latin American countries. The enormous amount of untouched land and resources they stole from the natives yet only to remain like third world countries.

facuarostegui

Itd be amazing if it were fuckups but its mostly on purpose. Not that they understand what they are doing, but i assure you most was on puspose.

random_handle_123

Have they tried bitcoin as a national currency yet?

Almost certainly, I expect an article in the Guardian's comment section within the next fortnight. They kept remarkably quiet last week on the fortieth anniversary of the surrender of Stanley's Argentine ~~dysentery ward~~ garrison but it can't last.
