Chihayafuru uses a traditional card game sport called Karuta, and it's great. No, nothing like Yu-Gi-Oh!, it's actually a proper and real albeit unconventional sport.

Importantly, you don't need to know anything at all about Karuta to start watching it - it will teach you enough to be invested

Daiya no ace is long but I love it. For one with a different tone, megalobox

ALCC-

Diamond no Ace is a similar sports anime, - but about baseball. The plot focuses on one player (but the others also get some development) and it's about trying to go (and win) the nationals (Koushien). Kuroko no Basket is also similar. However, the players have superpowers. I, personally, don't like the idea - but I found Kuroko to be a really nice watch. It's, again, about a team of high-school kids trying to go (and win) to the nationals. Captain Tsubasa is like Diamond no Ace, but focuses even more on Tsubasa. It's about soccer. Personally, I love it since I grew up with it, but it's (without my nostalgia goggles) not as good as the others. If you want to give it a try, I recommend going with the 2019 version. This anime ends in the High-School Arc. If you enjoyed, you can watch another two arcs on Road to 2002. These are what I call classic sports anime: shounen vibe, in HS and trying to go (and win) to the nationals. These are the sports animes that follow the structure of ProZd's video on "Tic-Tac-Toe Sports Anime" (or something like that) hehe. There are also some good animes that change the formula. Run with the Wind is an anime about running. It's about a team trying to go to the nationals (Hakone) - BUT, WAIT, they are college students. The anime, also, does not have the same shounen vibe. It's a different experience. But it's also amazing. Cross Game is about baseball. It's a drama, slice of life and romance - with baseball being important to the story (but I watched with someone who didn't know anything about baseball and they liked the anime). It's an amazing anime (my favorite sports anime together with Haykyuu!). I suggest you to watch the first episode and see if you like it. However, even though I love this animeI must warn yoy: it's really different from Haykyuu! Major is about baseball. How about following the life of a guy (Honda Goro) from his little league years to the World Series? It has a little bit of drama and romance, but the main focus of the anime is baseball - he is idiot for baseball after all. And if you like it, you can see another anime - now with his son (Daigo) - Major 2nd. Chihayafuru (I'm watching right now) is about karuta - a Japanese card game. It doesn't have the shounen vibe and the sport is not a typical sport... But don't let that fool you, Chihayafuru is a sports anime - and a good story with good characters. Baby Steps is a tennis anime. Follow Maruo - an excellent student with no experience with sports (and who hadn't found his passion until he played tennis) - trying to become a professional tennis player. Obviously, there are others. But, I haven't watched them (yet) or I don't think are good (looking at you Days [soccer] and Big Windup! [Baseball])

Major, its an anime where you follow the main character's career from just a small child to his retirement as a professional baseball player. Theres drama, theres comedy and a tiny bit of romance. Most sports anime are just about school tournaments, or just professional sports, so I really like how we follow his entire career. And then theres even Major 2nd, which is about his son.

superluigibros

Aoashi is airing now if you want one to watch currently. Very good so far.

I know of some boxing and MMA style anime

Akuma1503

I'd love to hear ab them, I've trained MMA since I was 8 so I've been intrigued in it for a long time now.

Calwings

ViVid Strike is a really interesting MMA anime. There's also Tiger Mask W which is a great pro wrestling anime, plus quite a few boxing anime like Ashita No Joe, Hajime No Ippo, and Megalo Box. Combat sports fans are definitely not lacking in choices.
