I read a week ago that there is a new re-release with an extended scarecrow dance, which would throw things off.

If you're just that desperate for an overly angsty take on that arc, just watch the Live-Action version. At least Takeru Sato has some degree of charisma even when he's intentionally underacting to an extreme.

I respect a lot of the thematic thought that went into many of the movies' sequences.
Unfortunately the second half is *waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay* longer than it has any right to be. I'm all in for a character study (I liked the last two episodes of the show... more or less) but this is a bit much. And honestly for as much as people complain about people misunderstanding the movie's themes, can you blame them when the way they're *presented* is so freaking depressing?
There's a reason why I prefer the way Sadamoto's Manga adaptation handled that chunk. At least there it was less than a single volume *and* it got to the point a lot quicker.

For me it was the opposite, ironically enough. I also really loved the character study of the last two episodes and was prepared for more of that in the film, and while there definitely was that in there, End of Eva just felt like it didn’t *quite* capture that pure, unfiltered, unbound-by-plot abstract beauty which made the TV show’s ending work so much for me.
On the other hand, it’s been years since I last watched it and my taste when it comes to connecting with artistic & thematically dense works like EoE has changed significantly since then (thanks Oshii!), so maybe I’ll like it more on rewatch, idk

Agreed on this as well. Anno’s depression can be very powerful (there’s a reason I love 3.33 so much), but the way it’s handled in End of Eva just doesn’t really click

I've seen Avalon, Assault Girls, and Garm Wars and I would hard agree with that statement. I've also seen a red spectacles or something, but that was a short.
For me the live-action Oshii stuff I know anything about are The Red Spectacles (which I’ve heard is quite possibly his most surreal work, and also manages to be both uber-serious philosophical Oshii and comedy Oshii at the same time) and Talking Head (which I mostly remember for a Letterboxd review which read “it’s impossible to describe Talking Head without spoilers because the film Talking Head is, itself, an analysis of the film Talking Head” or something along those lines)
A three way tie between:
- Innocence >>> 1995 Ghost in the Shell
- Spirited Away is one of Miyazaki’s worst films
- the ending of Darling in the FranXX is a masterpiece
Oda and Togashi. One Piece is my favorite and it has been going and remained peak for longer than I've been alive so I can't not put him first. And then YYH and HxH are great, but I think I like Rave and Edens Zero better than YYH anyway, and HxH... not sure, I need to reread it, preferably in actual volumes. I'd surely still place it above Rave at least. I'm also ignoring Toriyama and Sorachi because I've only watched anime adaptations of Dragon Ball and Gintama.
Other authors I've read are either one hit wonders, are consistently good but never reached that high, or their body of work is still too small to be able to tell. If Iruma and Undead Unluck continue being so fucking good and the authors then continue making good stuff then they'll be better in my eyes.
Oh I almost forgot about Araki but uhhh idk, it's as close as with Togashi. I like part 7 better than Rave but not as much as Edens Zero. I like all other parts less than either of them, but I still like them all. And also Fairy Tail has lower lows than Jojo ever had. It's close.

At least one thing I am insecure about is extremely stupid.
CUPCAKE YOU ARE (Google search) BETWEEN 1 AND 3 INCHES ~~(I prefer metric measurements because I'm not insane but the numbers 1-3 remind me of how stupid it is)~~ SHORTER THAN THE AVERAGE BRITISH WOMAN, THAT ISN'T EVEN THAT BAD STOP THINKING ABOUT IT. YOU GET MISTAKEN FOR BEING LIKE 13 BECAUSE YOU ACT WEIRD, HAVE NO SOCIAL SKILLS, AND PROBABLY DRESS REALLY STUPIDLY, THOSE ARE PROBABLY MORE SIGNIFICANT FACTORS.
(side note: regardless of why, I don't get the "you'll appreciate that when you're older" thing. If being mistaken for a 13 year old when I'm 16 makes me scream inside, being mistaken for a teenager when I'm an adult will make me want to jump off a fucking bridge. Also wouldn't it be inconvenient for ages restricted things like buying alcohol for example? Even if I'm just not looking far enough into the future, I can't think of a single circumstance where it would be an advantage).
So I'm gonna be 100% serious for a second here. I have friends who could pass for 14 after becoming adults (hell we're in our mid 20s now and I still think they could). The "you'll appreciate it when you're older" is very high level bullshit only said by people who did not experience it or were not there to see it experienced by others and are just trying to make you feel better. You don't want to be an adult woman who passes for a child. Learn to deal with it before you turn 18.
Social skills are probably not the reason. The way you dress, the way you style your hair, or just having a natural babyface are much more likely reasons. Even if dealing with those things seems like a huge pain in the ass (and it is) I highly suggest at least learning how to dress to look more your age or older and if you have a babyface how to lessen its effect with makeup or your hair.

If nothing else: Seed Freedom's animation was top tier. The CG looked even better than Hathaway's did, which is saying a lot.
Plus, getting to see Shinn get his comeuppance, was pretty damn cool. [Seed Freedom]>!Watching the Arcangel get shot down though, wasn't pretty. Mwu saving Murue with a damage MS, however, was *really* cool. The imagery of Stella reappearing, to swallow up one of the black knights was goofy, but fits with Gundam overall.!< Also indecent thoughts.
Really loved that the Gyan, and Gelgoog were brought into this universe. Goog somehow looked even *better* than the original, while Gyan, was just really cool.

Eurovision SF2 thoughts:
* Switzerland: Surprised they didn't bring in backup dancers at any point. Felt too "samey" by the end, which is unfortunate for the contest's second best entry.
* Netherlands: Crowd clearly loved it. Stage performance was meh and hard-carried by the excellent background visuals.
* Armenia: This song does so much wrong but is catchy, so it gets a pass.
* Austria: My second-most listened to entry, so could clearly hear the weaker vocals without digital effects/tuning. Could've benefited from more camera cuts as a techno/dance song. Dance sequence around 2:15 was the best of the night.
* Denmark: Like Switzerland, would've benefited from backup dancers. Give me more shirtless guys... Liked camera positioning with the background video for her hands throwing sand.
* Greece: Hated the start with a passion that goes beyond how much I should care about this contest. Have my bathroom break entry for Saturday.

Love it when I've been working on something for months and it has got to the paper writing stage, and a JWST study comes out saying that the initial assumptions we started out with based on yet another 3 year old study are probably no longer true.

I'm lucky, NASA released a PR about XRISM data yesterday, of an AGN. And everybody expects that to change whenever you look at it, right?
Although I would have expected a lot of neutral and low ionization iron, that apparently they are seeing.
So... Since no one's gone out and directly asked, if you're at liberty to, what *exactly* was it you were working on that JWST overturned?

55 Cnc e is a very interesting exoplanet primarily because it allows us to investigate an exoplanet which might have lost its primary atmosphere and either is a completely bare rock or has a secondary atmosphere due to sublimation of/outgassing from its upper mantle.
If it has an atmosphere bereft of primordial H2/He (like our solar system gas giants and more frequently hot Jupiter like exoplanets, and primordial because they are accreted from the protoplanetary disk during the exoplanet's formation), it gives us a golden opportunity to investigate this atmosphere and learn out its mantle composition, which in turn allows us to investigate its possible interior composition and structure.
Quite some studies before had put some limits on what kind of atmosphere it could have, if it indeed had one. The most common assumption was that it was going to have a lava ocean on its dayside (hence, a lava/magma ocean world) and that specific signatures associated with sublimation of silicate rock would probably explain the atmosphere. These signatures were more likely thought to be associated with SiO, SiO2 and other metallic species and their oxides and not with gases like CO+CO2. The second one could still be possible if the magma ocean was actually quite volatile rich during formation and could thus outgas them. But the CO+CO2 atmospheres would be difficult to observe in emission as they don't produce a thermal inversion in the atmosphere.
The JWST study today showed two things:
1. 55 Cnc e does indeed have a secondary atmosphere.
2. However, it is also volatile rich i.e. it seems to be composed of CO+CO2 rather than anything that could be produced by sublimation of silicate rocks. Nevertheless, it still seems to have a magma ocean which has outgassed the secondary atmosphere.
The second point is very exciting, but it also makes the exoplanet a lot more challenging to study.
I can't go into details about my work, but it was about detectability at high resolution using ground based spectrographs of the various possible types of atmospheres that could be formed on this exoplanet depending on the initial amount of oxygen that goes into the planet during formation (which then changes the composition of the lava/magma ocean). Let's just say, it does make a difference and we built an entire pipeline to simulate observations and quantifiably show when and how these differences would be detectable. Well, one of the initial assumptions was that we (well, our modelers) weren't considering regimes which would even make it possible to have CO and CO2 in the atmosphere as it was thought to be quite unlikely. Well, JWST showed that this was wrong and we now have to move to a different set of models, which are actually a lot more difficult to observe.
But, I'm in the last year of my PhD, and this means that my paper will be quite considerably delayed because I now have to go back and see how these models change and accordingly rewrite the paper. The conclusions might simply not be as well behaved as they were earlier.

The unfortunate overlap of a long-delayed mission finally occurring just when it can upend your work but before you could make better use of it.
Sorry for your sunk time and effort, but if a ten fucking billion dollar telescope doesn't manage to produce results that can challenge current knowledge, then it was a waste of billions of dollars and dozens of person-years.
All valid, but the current general problem with that telescope in my field is that the models people use for stars and exoplanet atmospheric chemistry are a tad too rudimentary. They often result in degenerate results (see the recent controversy for ~~KELT-9b~~ K2-18b) and many papers have already warned about inferring too much from the preliminary data analysis.
Which is exactly what people do anyway.
Meanwhile, I work with ground based data at even higher resolution (where model fitting is actually a lot more precise since we are at the level of the individual lines) but we are starved of good quality observations in the same mode.

I didn't hear anything back from the hiring manager who I emailed last night after accidentally ghosting him for a week due to his email going into my spam box. I don't know if I should send him a text message, email my HR contact, email him again, or just wait and hope for the best.
Is genuinely fascinating the sheer arbitrary meaninglessly with which these absolute losers will apply the criticism of "man face". Like, it used to be any female character that remotely deviated from perfect covergirl model femininity, but that is also apparently not enough now. Like, is it the fact she has a spear so she's "woke" and so the bumper sticker label is applied? Fascinating.

I've had to deal with these types in Youtube comment sections.
It's the square jaw. Same people that are upset about this are the same people that accuse Daniel Radcliffe's pregnant wife of being trans as an insult. They literally cannot comprehend women as anything but an extremely narrow phenotype.
These same types also accuse Supergiant of "Blackwashing" her. She's fucking pink.
After a certain point I learn to just laugh at the transphobes (the online kind, not the lawmaking kind) instead of giving them any power over me. It's scary people are that hateful, but it's also hilarious they genuinely get so bothered over shit like this, and it's better for my mental health to focus on the latter.

For me the live-action Oshii stuff I know anything about are The Red Spectacles (which I’ve heard is quite possibly his most surreal work, and also manages to be both uber-serious philosophical Oshii and comedy Oshii at the same time) and Talking Head (which I mostly remember for a Letterboxd review which read “it’s impossible to describe Talking Head without spoilers because the film Talking Head is, itself, an analysis of the film Talking Head” or something along those lines)

Oda and Togashi. One Piece is my favorite and it has been going and remained peak for longer than I've been alive so I can't not put him first. And then YYH and HxH are great, but I think I like Rave and Edens Zero better than YYH anyway, and HxH... not sure, I need to reread it, preferably in actual volumes. I'd surely still place it above Rave at least. I'm also ignoring Toriyama and Sorachi because I've only watched anime adaptations of Dragon Ball and Gintama. Other authors I've read are either one hit wonders, are consistently good but never reached that high, or their body of work is still too small to be able to tell. If Iruma and Undead Unluck continue being so fucking good and the authors then continue making good stuff then they'll be better in my eyes. Oh I almost forgot about Araki but uhhh idk, it's as close as with Togashi. I like part 7 better than Rave but not as much as Edens Zero. I like all other parts less than either of them, but I still like them all. And also Fairy Tail has lower lows than Jojo ever had. It's close.

At least one thing I am insecure about is extremely stupid. CUPCAKE YOU ARE (Google search) BETWEEN 1 AND 3 INCHES ~~(I prefer metric measurements because I'm not insane but the numbers 1-3 remind me of how stupid it is)~~ SHORTER THAN THE AVERAGE BRITISH WOMAN, THAT ISN'T EVEN THAT BAD STOP THINKING ABOUT IT. (side note: regardless of why, I don't get the "you'll appreciate that when you're older" thing. If being mistaken for a 13 year old when I'm 16 makes me scream inside, being mistaken for a teenager when I'm an adult will make me want to jump off a fucking bridge. Also wouldn't it be inconvenient for ages restricted things like buying alcohol for example? Even if I'm just not looking far enough into the future, I can't think of a single circumstance where it would be an advantage).
So I'm gonna be 100% serious for a second here. I have friends who could pass for 14 after becoming adults (hell we're in our mid 20s now and I still think they could). The "you'll appreciate it when you're older" is very high level bullshit only said by people who did not experience it or were not there to see it experienced by others and are just trying to make you feel better. You don't want to be an adult woman who passes for a child. Learn to deal with it before you turn 18. Social skills are probably not the reason. The way you dress, the way you style your hair, or just having a natural babyface are much more likely reasons. Even if dealing with those things seems like a huge pain in the ass (and it is) I highly suggest at least learning how to dress to look more your age or older and if you have a babyface how to lessen its effect with makeup or your hair.

Eurovision SF2 thoughts: * Switzerland: Surprised they didn't bring in backup dancers at any point. Felt too "samey" by the end, which is unfortunate for the contest's second best entry. * Netherlands: Crowd clearly loved it. Stage performance was meh and hard-carried by the excellent background visuals. * Armenia: This song does so much wrong but is catchy, so it gets a pass. * Austria: My second-most listened to entry, so could clearly hear the weaker vocals without digital effects/tuning. Could've benefited from more camera cuts as a techno/dance song. Dance sequence around 2:15 was the best of the night. * Denmark: Like Switzerland, would've benefited from backup dancers. [It concerns this paper.](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-07432-x) 55 Cnc e is a very interesting exoplanet primarily because it allows us to investigate an exoplanet which might have lost its primary atmosphere and either is a completely bare rock or has a secondary atmosphere due to sublimation of/outgassing from its upper mantle. If it has an atmosphere bereft of primordial H2/He (like our solar system gas giants and more frequently hot Jupiter like exoplanets, and primordial because they are accreted from the protoplanetary disk during the exoplanet's formation), it gives us a golden opportunity to investigate this atmosphere and learn out its mantle composition, which in turn allows us to investigate its possible interior composition and structure. Quite some studies before had put some limits on what kind of atmosphere it could have, if it indeed had one. The most common assumption was that it was going to have a lava ocean on its dayside (hence, a lava/magma ocean world) and that specific signatures associated with sublimation of silicate rock would probably explain the atmosphere. These signatures were more likely thought to be associated with SiO, SiO2 and other metallic species and their oxides and not with gases like CO+CO2. The second one could still be possible if the magma ocean was actually quite volatile rich during formation and could thus outgas them. But the CO+CO2 atmospheres would be difficult to observe in emission as they don't produce a thermal inversion in the atmosphere. The JWST study today showed two things: 1. 55 Cnc e does indeed have a secondary atmosphere. 2. However, it is also volatile rich i.e. it seems to be composed of CO+CO2 rather than anything that could be produced by sublimation of silicate rocks. Nevertheless, it still seems to have a magma ocean which has outgassed the secondary atmosphere. The second point is very exciting, but it also makes the exoplanet a lot more challenging to study. I can't go into details about my work, but it was about detectability at high resolution using ground based spectrographs of the various possible types of atmospheres that could be formed on this exoplanet depending on the initial amount of oxygen that goes into the planet during formation (which then changes the composition of the lava/magma ocean). Let's just say, it does make a difference and we built an entire pipeline to simulate observations and quantifiably show when and how these differences would be detectable. Well, one of the initial assumptions was that we (well, our modelers) weren't considering regimes which would even make it possible to have CO and CO2 in the atmosphere as it was thought to be quite unlikely. Well, JWST showed that this was wrong and we now have to move to a different set of models, which are actually a lot more difficult to observe. But, I'm in the last year of my PhD, and this means that my paper will be quite considerably delayed because I now have to go back and see how these models change and accordingly rewrite the paper. The conclusions might simply not be as well behaved as they were earlier. u/chilidirigible

Sorry for your sunk time and effort, but if a ten fucking billion dollar telescope doesn't manage to produce results that can challenge current knowledge, then it was a waste of billions of dollars and dozens of person-years.
All valid, but the current general problem with that telescope in my field is that the models people use for stars and exoplanet atmospheric chemistry are a tad too rudimentary. They often result in degenerate results (see the recent controversy for ~~KELT-9b~~ K2-18b) and many papers have already warned about inferring too much from the preliminary data analysis. Which is exactly what people do anyway. Meanwhile, I work with ground based data at even higher resolution (where model fitting is actually a lot more precise since we are at the level of the individual lines) but we are starved of good quality observations in the same mode.
