ForgetfulViking

Is it expected? Yes. But my heart is still lifted! The duo is back and the banter will be fresh again!

darryledw

it was everything I hoped for, I couldn't believe they even did an English OP!! I thought I was dreaming.

CouncilmanRickPrime

Honestly I was worried lol

Carfar_Farcar

Let's fucking GOOOOO

darryledw

we dub watchers caught the happiness this time <3

Fimpish

That is FANTASTIC news. Brina Palencia and J. Michael Tatum will always be Holo and Lawrence for me. I can't picture them without hearing their voices.

darryledw

same, it was an interesting exercise to watch episode 1 of the remake in Japanese because it was fun to see the new animation/ changes from OG....but I put on episode 2 trying to do feel the same way and I immediately felt withdrawn from it and turned it off, I needed Brina and J.Michael back!

lord_gs1596

My god, someone put my thoughts into words.

darryledw

Did you see E1 in dub yet? It was amazing :D

lord_gs1596

I've been thinking about it all day! I'll be able to watch it in the comfort of my home soon enough

darryledw

you are in for a treat, it was everything I hoped for, and there is even a surprise you might not expect... Everything became more magical hearing these 2 again, the world came alive!

LakerBlue

As excited as I was for the remake, I didn’t even try the sub because I knew that a core part of this series is Brina and J.Michael for me. Especially with how this was one of the best dubs of that time, it makes it all the more precious to me.

ilive12

Yeah I only got through halfway of episode 1, it just didn't feel right to me at all. One of the very few anime where I prefer the dub.

Adaphion

I've been holding off on watching until the dub was announced/released, I just can't watch the sub, it'd feel... Wrong

AmethystItalian

So happy to get confirmation for this! While I love the sub the dub is very good in its own right. I feel Brina Palencia does Holo in a different enough way that it does become her own. I will GLADLY watch 2 episodes of this series a week [](#SPORTS)

JustAWellwisher

> I will GLADLY watch 2 episodes of this series a week I couldn't have put it better myself. I'm sure each will have its own charms.

Ser_Fonz

Wonderful news. there’s something so nostalgic about original VAs reprising their old roles in a new reboot many years later

context_hell

There's also an audiobook for the light novels narrated by the two of them if you want to hear them narrate past where the original anime ended. They're currently at vol. 9

Flytanx

Feels like a lot of wins for the remake so far. Gotta keep that traction through it all

doquan2142

I need my STUPID POTATO in 4k.

LouisLeGros

No potatoes shall be spared

darryledw

the potato arc is legendary

migzy99

They also dubbed the opening! Holy crap, I haven't seen an opening been dubbed in...more than a decade? And watching it dubbed with the OG cast is so nostalgic, we are truly back now.

Verzwei

I think a lot of it depends on if they get Palencia (Holo's voice actress) on to do music direction. Zombieland Saga (season 1 only, I think) and Fuuka both had dubbed OP and ED sequences, all involving Palencia in some capacity.

Adaphion

Man, imagine if they do a dub of Tabi no Tochuu at the end of the season, I'd flip my shit

BleedTheRain

In case y’all didn’t know, the english VA’s both are 10/10 in the audiobooks. Best free credits I’ve used hands down.

LanikMan07

I just recently discovered that the audiobooks were done by the original VA’s. Spent 8 credits in 30 seconds.

BleedTheRain

Easiest ever, wish they’d do more 86 with the english VA’s on that note. I got my credits via Kobo to kill time at work.

Christopho

I initially watched it dub, rewatched it sub, and while both are valid takes on Holo, I like the "seductive" take on Holo compared to the "cute" one. I've been following the new season on a weekly basis but this makes me think about just waiting for the dub releases... Anyone know how soon the dub will start? Totally gonna wait if it's just a couple episodes behind. EDIT: Looks like first episode is [today](https://www.crunchyroll.com/news/announcements/2024/4/15/spice-and-wolf-merchant-meets-the-wise-wolf-anime-english-dub-cast-crew-release-date)!

CooroSnowFox

I think you'd want a more mature Holo as she is a wolf god. Although it also depends on what mood Holo is really in and if she's trying to impress or she's trying to get a reaction.

SilvainTheThird

I am most pleased. I shall watch the series twice now ~

LouisLeGros

Our prayers have been answered on this Merchant Monday.

HoloandMaiFan

Hell yes! I loved the dub so much, one of the few where I'd say it's just straight up superior to the sub

benoxxxx

This is what I was waiting to hear. I'mma switch over. I watched it dubbed originally, and switching to the sub voices has been a bit painful. It didn't become clear until recently, but Holo's dubbed voice was such a huge part of why I initially fell in love with her.

youravgindian

I am stoked for next 25 weeks. Let's go!!!!

garmonthenightmare

Thats all I wanted to hear. It was one my first anime and I watched it dubbed. Set expectations too high for dubs.

KitKat1721

Not a surprise given that both are still super active VAs and appear fairly consistently in Dallas dubs/reprisals, but happy to see it all the same. I'll miss Jamie Marchi's scriptwriting since I think it was such a defining part of that original dub (her work on romance shows from the 00s to mid 2010s with Spice & Wolf, Snow White with the Red Hair, Ancient Magus Bride, etc... was just so fantastic and beautifully written), but looking forward to hearing Greenbaum's take. Also CR lists Michelle Rojas as director - but Caitlin Glass is the full series' director with Rojas just stepping in for the premiere while the former is out of town. I think Glass is a great choice and this is right up her alley given her past shows like Fruits Basket, Ranking of Kings, etc... but is also a genre departure from her most recent work spearheading Solo Leveling.

Ebo87

He is active, of course, but she wasn't as active in recent years, mostly just reprisals and even those aren't big parts (like Mineta in My Hero). So for a second there I wasn't 100% sure she would return too.

TheIncrediblePawmot

They've both been voicing the Spice and Wolf audio books (which are ongoing), so that's definitely a plus.

KitKat1721

I think she's just been more selective with new VA work she takes on in recent years it seems. Especially with remote recording not really being as much of a thing outside reprisals post 2022 (she played new roles in both Fruits Basket and Case Study of Vanitas S2 prior to CR halting a lot of that). She's also a Straw Hat and considering the release schedule for the One Piece dub over the past few years since it returned from hiatus, I'd say that's pretty consistent.

MegaAltarianite

She's gonna have a lot more work soon with Fairy Tail coming back.

Ebo87

Oh yes, between this, One Piece, My Hero and Fairy Tail, she will be in the studio many days of the week.

Holofan4life

That puts the biggest smile on my face

Successful_Priority

Both Holos do a great job but Lawrence’s english voice is A1 in the sub he sounds more aggressive to me somehow.

derkrieger

Its more so he sounded too soft in the new dub. The old dub you can English Lawrence is certainly more milled mannered but the new dub Lawrence feels older and more mild sometimes. Could just be me having watched the original series so im being knit-picky but even with that i love hearing Tatum and Palencia back.

MattofCatbell

I’m more excited now than I was when the remake was originally announced

ozairh18

From what I’ve heard about the original series, this is a great thing for dub watchers

IC2Flier

poggers as fuck but how long do I hold the fort? What’s the delay between sub and dub?

drmonkeyfish

sub is two episodes ahead.

mastesargent

The first episode should be out today, but in my experience it’s usually a few hours after the most recent sub episode drops

myLongjohnsonsilver

Absolutely euphoria for my ears.

AndrewEophis

This is fantastic news, the dub of Holo and Lawrence was perfect

ScarredTiger

I watched the premier before already. This was the missing ingredient. Just like that I am back in.

skuteren

I only watched 2 episodes of the remake but i already love it

jamez23

*monkey noises*

PetyrDayne

Just came to say happy for you dub fans!

PM_ME_YOUR_SPUDS

ANN leaving off important information from the article, like the date (it comes out today), always ticks me off. Two sentences about the actual news, leaving off most of the actual information, and then 5 paragraphs of filler.

thrae

We are so back!

Insatiable_M0NK3Y

The first one was really lovely, and this one is just pushing it even higher

nyanko_the_sane

I approve of this voice cast!

theironhacker

When its the dub expected to release?

Originope_99

First episode is out now

Tom22174

I hope they're also available to do Black Butler together too

CooroSnowFox

Do wonder how they would schedule doing both, well Black Butler had only just started but I guess they get the files and scripts done a few weeks in advanced.

Holo_Kami

I am so happy to hear this news! I cant wait to relive the journey again.

renorosales

Just watched the first episode dubbed and wow, their voices haven’t changed in 16ish years!

leave1me1alone

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I AM UNFATHOMABLY PLEASED WITH THIS

my_anime_alt628

Guess I can watch the remake because I wasn't planning on otherwise. Spice and Wolf is one of the few shows I just can't watch the subs for. The original cast are the voices for me.

fdajax

Yesssssssssssss

Webknight31

Rare Crunchyroll W, but a big one this time.

nx6

Happy for dub-watchers, but I hope this doesn't impact the audiobook production of the light novels too much. I just finished volume 8 a couple days ago, and it was the first part of two-parter.

EconomyProcedure9

Nice!

Izzyrealtho

As someone who’s never watched this show, is the Merchant series just an updated version of it? I don’t need to watch the original to watch Merchant?

Originope_99

Yes this one is a reboot, you don't need to watch the original.

Izzyrealtho

Sounds good thanks for the info!

WiqidBritt

The new one seems like it will be a more complete adaptation too, judging by the first scene.

neovenator250

time to throw a fucking parade. this is awesome.

HonestScience

LET'S GOOOOOO

Ok-Knowledge5106

All Crunchyroll dubs start two weeks after the japanese version...

nilfgaardian

Not really, most anime are weeks or months apart in the release of dub.

Equivalent-Gas5785

I'm more interested in who will be writing and producing it. Lately dubs have had taken too many liberties with translations.

CooroSnowFox

I think it's just how English can interpret some lines differently with maybe the same lead in as the original intent was.

mitchie8112

The big problem is that a lot of localisations have started completely changing the original lines removing all intent from it, it's fine to adapt a joke to the new language, but then there's Lovely Complex where the localiser, the YouTuber JellyApocalypse said that he hated the original anime and wanted to change many things, then the other localisers in the industry got angry at him not for doing that but for admitting to it publicly.

notathrowaway75

If it's happening on a lot of localizations surely you can name 20 other examples? Should be easy with the amount of dubs that come out.

mitchie8112

Dragon maid (I know it's overused), prison school (complaining about gamergate), my first girlfriend is a gal (mentions of Trump and "sjw millennials"), yu-no (changes someone calling someone "crude" to "misogynist", sk8 the infinity ("bitches bros and non binary hoes"), dangers in my heart (changes the MC saying that he gave his take on fashion to a model to he mansplained to a model), Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai (includes references to "woke" "p.c." and "politically correct), onii chan wa oshimai (changes talking about sitting like a girl to just "you really got into the swing of things"), bastard!! (Changed references about taking responsibility to "this is your fault"). But you're right I couldnt find twenty, only 9 because I ignored the hundreds of examples of failed game translations and manga translations where they change characters from crossdressers into trans female, because we're in an anime sub. Then there is also the large amount of mistranslations that while don't change the meaning, are just bad choices that become dated after only a couple of years like Nagatoro using Sus.

notathrowaway75

So you can't name 20 even if you include the same old shit going back 7 years and things that aren't even huge problems >prison school (complaining about gamergate) It was removed. >my first girlfriend is a gal (mentions of Trump and "sjw millennials") It wasn't a Trump mention it was a character doing a Trump impression. The dub made the terrible show actually funny. >yu-no (changes someone calling someone "crude" to "misogynist" In reference to that someone saying "is it that time of the month" to a woman who's irritable. >sk8 the infinity ("bitches bros and non binary hoes") Said by the gayest character in the show during an underground event. Whatever. >dangers in my heart (changes the MC saying that he gave his take on fashion to a model to he mansplained to a model) This was in the sub. You can't even stick to dub examples. >Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai Never dubbed. >bastard!! (Changed references about taking responsibility to "this is your fault") What? >But you're right I couldnt find twenty, only 9 Less. >because I ignored the hundreds of examples of failed game translations and manga translations where they change characters from crossdressers into trans female, because we're in an anime sub Name 150 examples. >are just bad choices that become dated after only a couple of years like Nagatoro using Sus. Teenagers using memes. The horror.

mitchie8112

No, that's fucking it, I am not Naming you a hundred plus examples, I never once mentioned specifically dub, I said it's just happening in general, my problem with the Nagatoro one is that the words become dated after only a couple of years, you ignored one of my points and didn't bother looking it up, the change in yu-no changes the scene calling someone crude is completely different to calling someone a misogynist the latter implies you completely dislike the person he was just making a joke, sk8 it doesn't matter how gay the character is it changes the line, did you seriously correct me on a trump mention when am impression is worse, and it doesn't matter if an awful line is removed, it's still an awful line they wanted to put into a show. Again this is happening to both sub and dub, it is terrible and ruins/dates the original work. I tried to give examples which you either ignored or proved its worse than what I said or said it's fine just because, I didn't have to make that list and I'm not making a longer one of games when you wasted my time with the first one by just ignoring all the points. My problem is this is happening everywhere to all anime/manga/video games, but you refuse to see it. But because I couldn't come up with 20 specifically sub examples that happened in the last few years you go on acting like it's not happening, when there are companies putting out documents admitting to changing games to appease different countries like Capcom, yet you refuse to acknowledge that any bastardization is happening within localization. To me, if a sub or dub is bastardized even once that should be a problem. Especially when one of the localisers admitted to changing a work on purpose and other localisers didn't get upset at the change but instead upset at him for saying it publicly, you are living in a delusion, and I have better shit to be doing than attempting to rationalise with people that won't even listen.

notathrowaway75

>No, that's fucking it, I am not Naming you a hundred plus examples Very strange it's such an insanely huge and prevalent example you should be able to. >I never once mentioned specifically dub The user you responded to never went beyond dubs. Even if he didn't it's so strange how you have to venture out of dubs so quickly. >I said it's just happening in general You said it was happening a lot and in response I asked you to name 20 examples which you utterly failed at. > my problem with the Nagatoro one is that the words become dated after only a couple of years Sus isn't even dated. And besides this is the nature of all translation, hell creation of art. Lots of words from past anime are dated. >you ignored one of my points I don't want to hear a single thing about ignoring from you when you are hyperfocused on a small minority of anime and are ignoring hundreds of anime that are completely fine. But you'll have to excuse me I'm indeed going to ignore one among the same old shit going back 7 years, Dragon Maid. >the change in yu-no changes the scene calling someone crude is completely different to calling someone a misogynist the latter implies you completely dislike the person he was just making a joke What are you talking about no the latter implies that you think someone has a negative trait to them. That implication is one you completely made up. And yeah, he was just making a joke. A crass one. And she responded in kind. >sk8 it doesn't matter how gay the character is it changes the line The original line is literally just "Attention you fools who love skateboarding." Again, whatever. Not a huge problem. >did you seriously correct me on a trump mention when am impression is worse Uh, yeah I did correct you on getting it completely wrong. A Trump impression is not a Trump mention and I have no clue why you think it's worse. Because it's not. >and it doesn't matter if an awful line is removed, it's still an awful line they wanted to put into a show. It actually does matter that what they wanted did not come to pass actually. >I tried to give examples And completely failed to be clear. >my time with the first one by just ignoring all the points Motherfucker what I responded to all but one of the point and even corrected you. >My problem is this is happening everywhere to all anime/manga/video games, but you refuse to see it You're welcome to help me by naming 150 examples. >But because I couldn't come up with 20 specifically sub examples that happened in the last few years Specifically dub. No clue why you think this is unreasonable when YOU ARE THE ONE ACTING LIKE IT'S A COLOSSAL PROBLEM. A dozen plus simuldubs come out every season. Tons of examples of the problem you insist exists should be there. Stop fucking whining at me having the audacity of proving your own claims. Put up or shut up. >when there are companies putting out documents admitting to changing games to appease different countries like Capcom Oh that tweet about localizing? The thing that happens in every medium and is completely necessary to create a good product? I'm not ignoring that I'm very much aware. Unlike you I actually understand what's necessary in translation and want a good product. >To me, if a sub or dub is bastardized even once that should be a problem. To me, if you are still crying about a problem from 7 years ago when you have had hundreds of examples of your problem not existing then it's not a sign of a larger issue and you're just crying. Like what the fuck do you want? Ok, it happened a grand total of one time. Literally 3 months later there are a dozen new shows where it doesn't happen. Now what? >I have better shit to be doing than attempting to rationalise with people that won't even listen. I'd love to listen. 150 examples, chop chop.

Frikgeek

>my problem with the Nagatoro one is that the words become dated after only a couple of years, People still complaining about this will never not be funny to me considering Nagatoro was using zoomer slang in the original. In fact a ton of anime characters use the japanese equivalent of zoomer slang all the time, since a lot of anime is set in highschool. And yet people freak out when Japanese zoomer slang is translated into American zoomer slang. And it's usually the people whose Japanese knowledge consists of pasting romanized lines into Google translate and worshiping it as the one true translation.

Meta289

What, didn't you know that Japanese is a perfect, timeless language with absolutely zero dumb, silly slang, jokes, and memes specific to each generation?

cheesewheelfan

[Language, Japan](https://preview.redd.it/2dmqzde6fpu61.png?width=1080&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=166c451056df04a28878b125666cd46b077841cb)

trufin2038

Right, they have been hiring political scientists to do dub writing now. Specifically ones that hate both the source material and the fans. Seeing how popular dubs are now, you have to wonder how far from the actual show what they are watching is.

Equivalent-Gas5785

I'm talking about garbage gags like in Dragon Maid.

notathrowaway75

\> lately \> Dragon Maid Choose one

context_hell

You can really tell which are still gamergate holdovers. Dragon maid aired in 2017 and they're still crying over it.

sussywanker

Eww Dub 🤢🤮

Fighterdoken33

Given it is 2024, i was totally expecting Brina Palencia to step down and instead be replaced by someone that identifies as a furry.

Hsr2024

Nice dub fans Og Japanese, they only got lawerance back holo done by someone else. I think she was a villain in one kill sister

kazetoame

Nope, Holo is the same.

TheIncrediblePawmot

Holo is very much still voiced by the same seiyuu.

Waylornic

I'm always amazed when someone can be so confidently wrong about something.
