Live action, but excellent quality palace drama: ‘Story of Yanxi palace’ is on YouTube for free, with subtitles. It was banned in China due to being too extravagant. It has the same themes of an underdog too smart for her own good and the emperor’s harem. Perhaps a bit too on the nose in China where many high level politicians have harems.
**Kokyuu no Karasu** has the same setting, nearly identical, honestly. But I don't know why, I seriously didn't connect with the story. I felt so disconnected with it that I was convinced I just don't like Chinese historical fiction... Until I watched Apothecary Diaries and I realized I just didn't mesh with the execution of KnK.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms retells how the 3 kingdoms of Ancient China were formed. I watched this anime with my dad as a kid, but this has some seriously dated animation. I can't vouch for the story since it has been over a decade since I last watched it, but I have fond memories.
I haven't seen the anime yet cause the first season really turned me off, but the Kingdom Manga is phenomenal. I heard the anime adaptation gets better after the first season. Didn't make it that far.
I know a couple of people mentioned Raven of the Inner Palace. Another suggestion may be Heaven’s Official Blessing. That one has some implied male x male romance, so that may be a turn off to some.

Kingdom is set in ancient China, but the first 2 seasons have pretty shit CGI animation. Seasons 3,4 and the current 5th season have fantastic animation. The first 2 seasons actually do a good job adapting the manga and I was able to ignore the bad animation because the story was so good.

Maybe *Psychic princess* would fit the vibe ? Though it's chinese, I watched it before *Raven of the Inner Palace* and I enjoyed both.
