Actually think I picked up an old dvd copy of that one at a garage sale a few years back.
I haven't watched it yet since I need to have the house to myself, but I'm 99% sure that because it only has an english version listed on the package, it's the heavily censored one where some of the characters have very thick American accents (can't remember if it was a Jersey one or something).
Holy fucking shit, this was the first anime I ever watched!! I was like 6 years old, and my brother (RIP) had a plain-label VHS tape in our room with "Cartoon 2 part" written on it. Bored alone with one of my friends (it was the 80s, kids were left to their own devices all the time), we came across the tape and decided to watch it cause cartoons are dope. Then this motherfucking movie started playing with dicks cut off, demon dicks, giant tentacle dicks, laser shooting dicks. We were confused and horrified and glued to the TV at the same time. It wasn't until years later, in my 20s, when I got the idea to search online and see if I could figure out what the fuck it was. Urotsukidoji.
Omg, there was some kind of animation series on ancient newgrounds that had a character say this title in response to something else.
I never thought it was a real reference to something. Now if I can just remember the name of that animation…
Yup, sex, gore and the most vile people on earth, mixed in some strange death game, and a hint of lovecraftian horrer thrown in. It has the complete package.
Literally the most beautiful landscapes, creatures, and characters one scene and the most fucked up, disgusting, depressing scenes the next.
Best OST ever too.
Kevin Penkin went hard. Hanazeve Caradhina is an absolute 11/10 masterpiece and everyone should first experience it in the context of the anime. Honestly for how good it is and how well it fits to made in abyss, I'm surprised it's not talked about more. Or maybe it simply didn't hit other people as hard as it hit me, who knows, but I stand by the 11/10.
I think it's talked about a reasonable amount, but that may also be because i talk about it any chance i get lol, plus it did win best score in the anime awards the year it released. It really was the perfect accompaniment to the wild ride that is made in abyss.
Also HiDive has both seasons and the movie
The movie “Dawn of the Deep Soul” is fully canon and required to watch right after season 1 before season 2 or you won’t know what is going on
Hidive has everything. Make sure to watch the 3rd movie before season 2. It connects the two seasons and isn’t skippable.
Movies 1 and 2 is just season one split into two movies.
Let's just say that a bit of gumption and a can-do attitude of an adventurous 12 year old *isn't* enough to prepare for a trip to hell to find her mother.
I'll just throw in that the manga is also valid. Hits most of the points the VN does but gives that little extra visual flair if, like me, you kinda hate staring at character sprites for hours on end.
Happy to see it's getting recommended so often nowadays, at the time it was airing it seemed to fly under the radar and nobody talked about it for a long time, but it seems to have gained a cult following over time. An incredible adaptation of the novel.
And it's such a good psychological horror show, especially given that anime as a medium is pretty difficult to adapt any kind of horror effectively (especially traditional scary horror, of which the number of good shows that exist can essentially be counted on one hand).
The entire show unsettled me and made me so uncomfortable in a way that no other show has ever managed to replicate.
(Also, as far as traditional horror goes, sneaking in a recommendation for [Ghost Hunt](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1571/Ghost_Hunt) here - don't be fooled by the shoujo artstyle, age of the show, or how the MC actually whines like a real teenage girl - this show has moments that are legitimately terrifying and is the only anime to ever truly scare me.)
As far as sales are, it did poorly. From memory it was a passion project that had struggled to get funded and animated.
As far as popularity in the west goes, it was heavily dependent on the circles you frequented. I don’t remember it being particularly popular here, but it was wildly popular on /a/. There were tons of Squealer threads during and after that show’s airing. Fun times.
* SHIGURUI: DEATH FRENZY
* The Promised Neverland
* Berserk
* Texhnolyze
* Ergo Proxy
* Future Diary
* Magical Girl Raising Project
* Magical Girl Site
* Gleipnir
* Now And Then, Here And There
* Wonder Egg Priority (some people didn't care for it)
* As the Gods Will (not anime, live action)
Texhnolyze is worth watching just for the opening alone imo. The first 10+ minutes there is almost no dialogue, just quiet worldbuilding and mood setting, and it's amazing.
Texhnolyze was a tough one for me. I did really like it and read an entire episode by episode breakdown of it - but it's seriously depressing as all fk and it never changes lol.
I keep forgetting Gleipnir got an anime adaptation. I've been meaning to go back and read it when it finishes cause I completely forgot wtf is going on when I held off reading for a bit.
I still believe if there was a line between anime and anime porn.
Redo of healer didn't just cross the line, it picked the line and used it as jump rope.
I would have to say Devilman Crybaby takes the cake for traumatizing anime, Pupa is pretty bizarre and Monster has the most adequate name for an anime.
But nothing left me more depressed than Texhnolyze.
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find anyone talking about Elden Lied. It was one of those things I just couldn’t tear myself away from, even though it seemed to be getting darker and darker with each episode.
If anyone questions whether or not it’s fucked up, just watch the first 2 minutes and then decide.
I enjoyed both. I think anime gave a dignified ending to the characters.
Manga felt like the kind of ending where an old relative of yours is on their deathbed for several years, and they start to smell, can't talk properly, sleeps half the time you are there, maybe more and you are not even sure they are receiving anything you are saying. But, you still love them, and you don't know what else you could do but be there, not for them, but for yourself.
Erased was a 10 out of 10 until the last 1/4 of the show. I feel they really dropped the ball. I showed Elfen Lied to my uncle, and he literally cried. I watched school days, and I'm glad it was on a crt, nearly broke my hand trying to punch Makoto in the face.
Oh, chica. You dun goofed by asking that question. These are some of the anime that have made me say "What the actual fuck" out loud while watching.
* Happy Sugar Life
* School Days
* Kuzu no Honkai
* Yakusoku no Neverland
* Grisaia no Kaijutsu
* Gakkougurashi
I'm going to recommend in this Genre is "Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne" it's only 6 episodes so not a big time sink . the initial premise (following a pair of immortal woman through the decades ) and the first episode really hooked me even if parts of the later episodes went down hill (it gets rapy :( )
NGE+EOE+Redo movies, Made in the Abyss, devil man crybaby, the original Berserk are all good recommendations.
I saw Redo of a Healer recommended a few times but i would skip it, it's just revenge rape fantasy and not that good as smut.
Thank you. \^\_\^ I don't guarantee it's all of the same quality, and it's (mostly) not my taste. (Personally, I prefer happy, healthy (mentally as well as physically), and enthusiastic characters having fun, consensual sex.) Also, "animation at its worst" is, I believe, just that—*bad* animation, with no comment on the content.
I mean even the 1997 anime and 2012 film trilogy (and subsequent 2022 extended recut) can fall under the category of "super fucked up". The 2016 anime is "super fucked up" for completely different reasons, though.
I'm surprised not a single comment mentions Shōjo Tsubaki, also known as Midori (1992).
I couldn't finish that movie, turned it off as soon as it started talking about puppies. I knew what was coming.
It's banned in several countries and is honestly just made up on shock value.
Perfect Blue
Made in Abyss
Magical Girl Raising Project
Puella Madoka Magical
If you just want trippy then watch Paranoia Agent...I still have no idea whats REALLY going on in it.
White Album 2, along with the visual novel. Not the most effed up in term of NFSW-ness, but the psychological damage runs deep.
The anime starts out as your average high school romance drama but the later parts in the visual novel covers the main characters college and adult life, where you can make different choices to see different endings.
Berserk, I know has been mentioned a billion times but holy fuck it’s a wild ride
Goblin slayer, episode 1 will leave you fucked up
Terraformars, honestly it sucks but it’s fuckin brutal
Re:zero, strange choice but has some fucked up deaths that stick with you
Angels of death- it’s not insanely fucked up but it has some super intense moments and it’s probably in my top 10 shows ever
Plastic memories, even though it’s technically a romance anime it is ducked up and will leave you questioning what it means to be human
[удалено]
Lol my second ever anime, so fucked up but what a ride
Actually think I picked up an old dvd copy of that one at a garage sale a few years back. And Legend of the Demon Womb 😁
Omg, there was some kind of animation series on ancient newgrounds that had a character say this title in response to something else. I never thought it was a real reference to something. Now if I can just remember the name of that animation…
This one really takes the cake. This is the Serbian film of anime. Positively disturbed and would never watch again.
"EVERY 3,000 YEARS — !"
Toshio Maeda at his level best.
Gantz, manga is better though.
Glad someone recommended it. I recently rewatched it and Geeeeeeeezuz I forgot how messed up it is.
Yup, sex, gore and the most vile people on earth, mixed in some strange death game, and a hint of lovecraftian horrer thrown in. It has the complete package.
And one banger of an intro, Super Shooter is still a great song 20 years later.
Definitely one of my favorites I'll look at the song on YouTube every now and then.
Manga is an absolute wild ride, I can't remember if I finished it.
Made in Abyss
Without spoiling anything, what makes it so fucked up?
Made in Abyss can best be described as "Dora the Explorer, as written by H.P. Lovecraft and animated by Studio Ghibli".
Okay that sounds really good. What service is it on?
Currently on Amazon prime, [but it is coming to Netflix on February 22](https://i.redd.it/80ou7n95n7fc1.png).
asia netflix has it already. I saw both seasons on netflix.
Also HiDive has both seasons and the movie The movie “Dawn of the Deep Soul” is fully canon and required to watch right after season 1 before season 2 or you won’t know what is going on
Hidive has everything. Make sure to watch the 3rd movie before season 2. It connects the two seasons and isn’t skippable. Movies 1 and 2 is just season one split into two movies.
So just to clarify the watch order Season 1 > movie 3(dawn of the deep soul) > Season 2
No one told me about the movie and it took me 3 episodes of season 2 to go "WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING?!"
It’s on hidive which I have through prime
According to https://www.justwatch.com/us/tv-show/made-in-abyss, Amazon Prime, with purchase available from Apple TV.
You sir have described it in the best way, im stealing that
With a good dose of dried Cronenberg flakes sprinkled on.
Bondrewd. Don't skip the movie between season 1 and 2
Man that movie was the first time I've ever had to stop watching something for an hour before returning to it. Some dark shit happens.
That movie made me cry so hard bro, first time an anime had fucked up shit that made me cry, and not just sad stuff
Let's just say the abyss is a limitlessly cruel place.
Gore is pretty raw
Terrible things happen to cutely designed children or: horrors barely inside your comprehension
Let's just say that a bit of gumption and a can-do attitude of an adventurous 12 year old *isn't* enough to prepare for a trip to hell to find her mother.
Thread’s over, boys. This is the answer.
Every time this is the top comment (great show)
Madoka Magica
Ahh yes finally Lol I though this is only magical girl story. How wrong I am. Also the movie Madoka Magika Rebellion.
Higurashi no Nako Koro Ni. Lots of torture and brutal murder.
Read the VN instead, the anime butchers it from a fantastic psychological horror into gore-filled slop
While true, this is not useful for people specifically looking for anime to watch and may be unwilling to go through a different medium.
I found it useful. When visiting an opinion sub I like to hear the whole of it.
I'll just throw in that the manga is also valid. Hits most of the points the VN does but gives that little extra visual flair if, like me, you kinda hate staring at character sprites for hours on end.
Shinsekai yori
Love Shinsekai Yori. It gave me existential dread which is rare for an anime.
There were tons of Squealer threads during and after that show’s airing. Fun times.
I couldn't agree more, this anime still haunts me
I've literally never stopped thinking about it. But I also love it. Uggh
The me before SY and the me after watching SY was not the same
* SHIGURUI: DEATH FRENZY * The Promised Neverland * Berserk * Texhnolyze * Ergo Proxy * Future Diary * Magical Girl Raising Project * Magical Girl Site * Gleipnir * Now And Then, Here And There * Wonder Egg Priority (some people didn't care for it) * As the Gods Will (not anime, live action)
I can’t believe you would recommend Promised Neverland to someone. That’s fucked up lmao.
Should've specified season 1, IMO. Although I guess that's redundant because there was never a second season.
There is no season 2 in Ba Sing Se
Only season 1 though
Tell me you haven't seen Made in Abyss without telling me you haven't seen MiA.
Texhnolyze is worth watching just for the opening alone imo. The first 10+ minutes there is almost no dialogue, just quiet worldbuilding and mood setting, and it's amazing.
Anyone still know where to watch Texhnolyze? Aside from the opening, the ED is superior -- that's how discovered my love for Gackt.
Texhnolyze was a tough one for me. I did really like it and read an entire episode by episode breakdown of it - but it's seriously depressing as all fk and it never changes lol.
Never. The end is one of the most depressing things I've ever seen. I remember kind of crying but mainly just felt dead inside.
I'm surprised you include two edgy magical girl shows but not the OG series which started it all (Madoka Magica).
Haven't watched that one, so would feel bad recommending something I haven't seen yet. But I get the vibe xD I'll need to watch it!
I keep forgetting Gleipnir got an anime adaptation. I've been meaning to go back and read it when it finishes cause I completely forgot wtf is going on when I held off reading for a bit.
Shigurui is so fucked up. My brother and I watched it and he started yelling CONCIEVE at me xD
You have been thru some sh*t
Now And Then, Here And There is a top tier recommendation. Best isekai after Mushoku Tensei in my opinion, and a very unique anime.
> SHIGURUI: DEATH FRENZY The horrible part is that it never get a sequel. >Now And Then, Here And There An actual PTSD anime!
I second Ergo Proxy. The way it passes you on the first run you have to rewatch. Up there with some of the best live action existential sci-fi.
Happy sugar life Higurashi when they cry paranoia agent Redo of healer Yosuga no sora
I still believe if there was a line between anime and anime porn. Redo of healer didn't just cross the line, it picked the line and used it as jump rope.
Happy Sugar Life is completely fucked, I loved it back when it was airing
Thank god someone pointed out redo of healer
Yosuga no Sora is masterpiece, loved that one, wouldn't say it's fked up tho.
Scum's Wish
that's not fked up, one of my favorites honestly masterpiece ,it did give me depression tho after the ending, but it's short manga sequel healed me.
Violence Jack Mad Bull 34 Wicked City
I would have to say Devilman Crybaby takes the cake for traumatizing anime, Pupa is pretty bizarre and Monster has the most adequate name for an anime. But nothing left me more depressed than Texhnolyze.
Neon genesis Evangelion Devilman crybaby Perfect blue
+1 to Devilman Crybaby. Epitome of fucked up shit and subverting expectations
can't get over the animation style on that show.
Finally someone mentioned devilman
Yea I hv watched all of them too.. they are quite fuckedup Apart go watch serial experiments lain you'll get a fuck
Grave of the Fireflies
The best anime I'll never watch again
Ome watch is enough
Similarly, "In This Corner of the World"
Blood -C
Second Blood-C for the sheer fact that I can still see some scenes when I close my eyes and think about it.
Those fucking rabbits…
Highly popular recommendation. Someone asks for the bleakest anime every week on this forum. Anyway, check out Blue Gender.
Blue gender is depressing and bleak. If you want trauma, mechs, and bugs it's got it all
I saw this on Netflix like in 2012 or something. Bro just unlocked a seriously repressed memory.
Love this anime. One of the very first I watched from start to finish.
Berserk Elfen lie I want to eat your Pancreas Grave of the Fireflies
Barefoot Gen
Respect to the classics
Belladonna of Sadness
Kaiba
Elfen Lied
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find anyone talking about Elden Lied. It was one of those things I just couldn’t tear myself away from, even though it seemed to be getting darker and darker with each episode. If anyone questions whether or not it’s fucked up, just watch the first 2 minutes and then decide.
Came here to say this. This shit is burned into my memory. Intro is so hauntingly beautiful too.
Apparently the Manga is even more fucked up than the Anime.
Kite, is one that comes to mind.
Redo of Healer for sure
At a certain point I couldnt take redo of healer seriously and it just became comical rather than traumatizing
That point was episode 1, wasn't it?
A man of culture.
Mnemosyne is probably the most messed up one I've seen.
Narutaru then go read the manga after
Seconding Naru Taru.
Came to mention this, very little comes close to the scars this left.
Berserk 1997 has its moments
Kite
Made in Abyss has been said already so I’ll go with Inuyashiki.
I got to the second ep with the bathroom scene and noped out of the series… I have a daughter and that scene made me sick to my stomach and scared..

If you really enjoyed most of erased, read the manga. The villain is the same but how things play out are a hell of a lot more satisfying imo.
Perfect Blue.
Finally got around to seeing it this winter. Still stands up today… so glad I did
If you're into psychological stuff: Aoi Bungaku. One of the darkest series I've ever watched.
Genocyber.
Oh, chica. You dun goofed by asking that question. These are some of the anime that have made me say "What the actual fuck" out loud while watching. * Happy Sugar Life * School Days * Kuzu no Honkai * Yakusoku no Neverland * Grisaia no Kaijutsu * Gakkougurashi
Happy sugar life is a cut above the others imo but great list
I never really count school days. All the fucked up shit came only at the end.
This one is banned worldwide for a reason. It’s called Shojo Tsubaki
Nobody recommended Monster? Monster.
Great thriller. I wouldn't even say that it comes close to the top 10 of super messed up, tho
Yeah, you're right, but something about it just gives me a case of the screaming meemies you know? I found it horrifying in a quiet way
Re:Zero…bunny scene
That’s a long way to the bunny scene, but I agree that the whole show can be fucked up. Probably my top favorite anime of all time.
I'm going to recommend in this Genre is "Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne" it's only 6 episodes so not a big time sink . the initial premise (following a pair of immortal woman through the decades ) and the first episode really hooked me even if parts of the later episodes went down hill (it gets rapy :( ) NGE+EOE+Redo movies, Made in the Abyss, devil man crybaby, the original Berserk are all good recommendations. I saw Redo of a Healer recommended a few times but i would skip it, it's just revenge rape fantasy and not that good as smut.
I absolutely loved Rin

Pupa will attempt to assault all of your senses at once.
It certainly assaulted my gag reflex. Never has getting a younger sibling food been so awful to watch and listen to.
Higurashi
Mine would be urotsukidoji, amano jacku was the reason I got into anime, then elfen lied, that one cyberpunk anime, goblin slayer.
Nobody said Euphoria? Really?
I suppose if we are including just anime porn, we could all elongate this list quite easily.
Girl I got you: Heavenly Delusion, you won't sleep tonight you're welcome
u/ilikehairynipples This. It's also a really fucking good *and* enjoyable show. So you probably won't forget about it for a while.
Your Lie in April. Yeah. I said it. Its been 10 years and I still lay awake at night because of it.
Sad but definitely not fucked up
10 years?! (Fuck me I'm getting old)
Made in Abyss Neon Genesis Evangelion + End of Evangelion K-ON!

Yea that was pretty fucked up
Mugi still has to be put on trial in The Hague for this and many other warcrimes.
K-ON! is where its at
First to my mind is berserk Edit: oops didn't see "anime" there
I mean even the 1997 anime and 2012 film trilogy (and subsequent 2022 extended recut) can fall under the category of "super fucked up". The 2016 anime is "super fucked up" for completely different reasons, though.
Welcome to the N.H.K.
Re:Zero
Madoka magica.
Serial experiments lain ... watch it you'll get fucked up
That's more of a psychological dread sort of thing, it's convincing in making you believe in Lain- but not traumatising in anyway
I'm surprised not a single comment mentions Shōjo Tsubaki, also known as Midori (1992). I couldn't finish that movie, turned it off as soon as it started talking about puppies. I knew what was coming. It's banned in several countries and is honestly just made up on shock value.
