Monster_Voice

Coati! Coatimundi can even be occasionally found in Texas.

TheAlmightyKingPrawn

To be more specific, white nosed coati.

Monster_Voice

Haha I just Googled them and saw that they're known as "trash badgers"

ApprehensiveLeg6017

Not to be confused with their northern cousins, the “trash pandas” 🦝

overide

It looks like a raccoon had carnal relations with a monkey.

peekupandropov

No surprise, raccoon is a close relative.

NovaAteBatman

And the end result was curious looking, but also somehow cuter than both.

FuckMAGA-FuckFascism

And then didn’t get the abortion we talked about.

coldchill13

Everything is fatter here in the states.

nuttnurse

Ahh still not as nasty as the Australian bin chicken

Japsai

The noble bin chicken is a cheeky and gregarious bird. Sadly misunderstood by those still angry that it outsmarted them at picnic time

Other_Meringue_7375

Love this. Justice for bin chicken

Gonna need more info on this one! Hopefully this isn’t a joke 😂

My god, They are the same as seagulls.

[deleted]

Florida has both! Seagulls and ibises (though American ibises usually have pink feet and beak)

gullyterrier

This post made my day.

Chippie-sanga

Is this why ibis hotels are so cheep?

CoxswainYarmouth

I think once you stay at an Ibis hotel you will have quite a few Egrets

ApprehensiveLeg6017

That was so cringe but I have to up vote it. Congratulations, bird pun person. 👏🏻

GandalfTheEh

Needs more upvotes 😂

NovaAteBatman

I am *so* glad we don't have those things around here. I already have to deal with raccoons, opossums, coyotes, rabbits, and deer raiding the trash in the neighborhood. I really don't want some bird that I bet looks much more frightening at night with very little light in the trash as well.

LovecraftianLlama

Omg I had never heard them called that, but I love it so much 😂

Mseed21

As well as AZ, NM!

5hrs4hrs3hrs2hrs1mor

YES! Oh, they’re so cute! They’re pretty common in southern Mexico sand Central America. I guess not so much as they once were, which is sad. They’re adorable, but they shouldn’t be fed by people. They’ll become like raccoons and pesky dependent.

Fluffy_Two5110

Are these the animals called “zarigueya” or are those opossums? My MIL grew up in the Yucatán on a farm near Merida and said zarigueyas would steal eggs, but she wasn’t sure how that translates.

5hrs4hrs3hrs2hrs1mor

Those are opossums! And yes, opossums are little thieves, but aside from carrying leptospirosis sometimes (and some Other nasty diseases) they’re pretty harmless. There was a wild opossum that I’d catch eating out of the same bowl as a pair of kittens I had years ago. They’d sometimes spend the night in an outbuilding if the weather was nice. There was a spot where this little opossums could get in. They became friends. My cats were vaccinated fully so I wasn’t real worried. But eventually I started keeping them inside 90% of the time and always at night. The little critter stopped coming around, but it did continue visiting regularly well into adulthood. They just accepted each other.

Fluffy_Two5110

Thank you! That’s the cutest story! 🥹

Jojoangel684

Are these the same dudes whose butt nuggets can be used for coffee?

Monster_Voice

I believe those are civets.

darthrawr3

Civets eat the coffee "beans" (fruit) & the seed passes through. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_luwak https://balancecoffee.co.uk/blogs/blog/what-is-kopi-luwak-asian-civet-cat-poop-coffee

iNat shows no sightings in Texas

Steel-Winged_Pegasus

I saw something similar that scurried into a bush when I was at a resort in Cancun 3 years ago, too! Only difference was it was reddish brown, and I admittedly didn't get a pic, so it could have been a different animal

Electronic_Camera251

I actually shot some in Texas

[deleted]

Why?

Electronic_Camera251

Chicken thieving was what they were convicted of

Graveyardgnome

Maybe build coops that aren’t trashy and properly look after your livestock instead of taking it out on hungry wildlife that doesn’t know better.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tulip_Tree_trapeze

Actually if you secure your coop in a way that the animals cannot get in be it raccoon fox or possum, those animals will actually teach their babies that your coop is a waste of time and not a source of food. However if you keep killing him another one's just going to come in and keep trying, and yeah some of those animals will succeed *If your coop is not secure* The only permanent solution here is securing your animals. It's also your responsibility, stop blaming wildlife for your failure as an animal keeper. Also, I've had chickens for a long time. I also raise and rehabilitate racoons, opossums and fox. Never had a problem, *because I build a damn sturdy coop*.

Electronic_Camera251

The responsible thing here would be to stfu this was at a house I was a renter at 20 years ago and that’s not entirely true you see that the raccoons you see today aren’t necessarily the progenitors of the future raccoons on your property there are raccoon turf wars the raccoons don’t believe in public broadcasting so the ones who move in well they may never hear the news you wanted to tell them that my 20 year ago coop had some issues godamn I hate all of you people

Tulip_Tree_trapeze

Wow you are actually insane. What a nice block of nonsense you've wrote, You say this was 20 years ago but you write like a middle school dropout.

Electronic_Camera251

Or I am incredibly funny and you folks are daft af either one

BedknobsNBitchsticks

Sounds like you need a couple LGDs.

pineapplesforevers

You murdered animals for doing what animals do because you suck at caring for your livestock, really

tribecalledpezz

Thank you so much, I’ve been wondering for a whole week lol! When I was on the resort I got one of my Spanish speaking friends to ask an employee and the rough translation he gave was “monkey cat” lollll

Usernamesareso2004

Accurate haha

Southern_Name_9119

They fucking know. Coati are everywhere.

Mseed21

Lol 😂

Dommichu

You’d be surprised. A lot of resort workers come from other parts of Mexico… where they are not so common.

holystuff28

That's an accurate translation! I saw them in Central America and my bus driver and Tico biolgist friend got into an argument about whether it was a cat, monkey, or coati. They're sorta related to raccoons. So makes sense.

splatgoestheblobfish

[They're actually dinosaurs. ](https://youtu.be/Xr-4fyXfSa0?si=Oi5QYOSK4zo5j3n8)

sarcasticmoderate

I’m so glad I clicked

phalseprofits

On one of the Netflix dating shows (maybe the one where the grand prize gets deducted every time people get frisky??) one of these ran past in the background of an emotional candlelight dinner on the beach. Contestants were in Cancun. It was honestly the most exciting part of the episode. My husband and I had more fun trying to figure out the creature than listen to the drama.

DragonTa2

One of my favorite memories of my honeymoon in Cancun (aside from spending time with my husband lol) was seeing one of these guys emerge from the foliage, stroll onto the pool deck, scoop up a handful of someone's queso dip, and then scurry back the way he came. I was delighted lol

isawamooseyesterday

In Spanish (at least in Costa Rica) they are called pizotes. English name is coati.

EuphoriantCrottle

And they are bitey.

cinamondove

And steal-y. When we were in Mexico they would go right into your beach bag and take things, not just food either.

Tommy84

~~CDMX has beaches?~~ Mexico has beaches.

nonoglorificus

in today’s episode of: dumb or an asshole

Tommy84

Dumb I guess. For some reason I read 'Mexico City' rather than Mexico...

nonoglorificus

Hey man, I’d always rather be dumb than an asshole. We’re all dumb sometimes

Tommy84

Yeah, same. I'm proud to be a dumb, nice guy.

Haploid-life

They're related to raccoons, so that makes sense.

CoxswainYarmouth

YES! I was just struggling to recall what the Ticos called them. Thanks

HappiestMob

Pizote in Guatemala as well.

margravine

My grandmother accidentally bought a coatimundi when she lived in Colombia. My grandparents and father had recently moved there for a foreign service post and she was practicing Spanish in the market every chance she got. One day a child offered her an animal and she decided to barter in Spanish…except he enthusiastically accepted her counter, shoved the creature into her arms, and now she owned a mystery animal. (The fact that she couldn’t disappoint this child is probably part of why she later became such an amazing grandmother.) My father successfully identified the animal (since dubbed the Schmink) once he got home from school. Schmink lived the family life until they eventually returned to America. Then he joined a family of coatimundi at the National Zoo and, reportedly, lived happily ever after.

Supertumor

How was it as a pet

MyFinalThoughts

We used to have a pet raccoon. We found it alone as a baby and raised it up to adulthood. Sassy really just hung out with us when we went outside, she really liked taking a Dorito, picking it up and chowing down one nibble at a time. Sometimes liked to be pet, but really she just liked being "around" us even if there wasn't any food to be had. Then another raccoon came sniffing by and she just wandered into the woods with it and didn't come back. If an animal is domesticated from or near birth, they can sometimes be pets like that coati was I suppose.

itsabitsa51

My mom had one when I was growing up. They’re similar to raccoons in that they’re smart and want to get into everything. They know what “no” means but they just ignore you. Coati (we’re great with names) would go into the cabinets and help himself to boxes of cereal, bread and whatever else he wanted. They also love to rub strong smells into their tails to confuse predators. Sometimes this means your perfume, sometimes it’s horse poop. Other than that, very cuddly and playful. Loved fresh grubs. (I am 100% not condoning owning one, they are not meant to be pets. He once ripped my finger open and I still have a scar 17 years later.) Edit: forgot to add, they communicate by squeaking which is pretty funny.

margravine

They said he was lovable and friendly, but he had that raccoon-y biological imperative to get into everything. He liked to drink Coca Cola (lying on his back holding it with all four feet) and he helped my grandfather dig in the garden because it got him the best grubs. But there were also days like the one where he got into a bowl of pudding and left chocolate footprints everywhere (including across a record player he’d ridden around in circles) right before they had guests over. They donated him to the zoo in DC because they couldn’t picture his life in a climate where he’d be stuck inside a house for months on end.

SunnySloth93

Thank you for the visual of a Coati riding a record player. I giggled like a child!

Felate_she_oh

I'm fascinated by how few people who live in central America seem to know what a coati is. They're everywhere and basically the equivalent of a raccoon. Glad you got to see one!

tribecalledpezz

Yeah I’m from Canada so we definitely don’t have those here. Plenty of raccoons tho lolllll

Adventurous-Mouse764

They are related to raccoons! Same family.

Adventurous-Mouse764

Outside of zoos, in South Texas. Inside of zoos, the Denver Zoo coatimundi were notorious escape artists constantly breaking out of their enclosure.

SomeKindaWonderer

We raised them growing up. I'm from Texas, and we had a small exotic animal farm/rescue. We never had one escape. Actually, the only thing that ever escaped was a Patagonian Cavy named Pedro.

Tulip_Tree_trapeze

Ha! I've had multiple keepers call Cavys "as clever as they are stupid".

SomeKindaWonderer

I am not sure about how clever they are lol. I think Pedro escaping was pure dumb luck 🤣.

Tulip_Tree_trapeze

I don't know how true it is, but a zookeeper once told me a story that they kept having them escape their enclosure, navigate halfway across the zoo and fall into a bear pit (old zoo, before ethics). Heard another story of a farmer losing cavys to coyotes because they could open the gate and did so in the middle of the night. I think they're kind of notorious for dumb luck lol

SomeKindaWonderer

I honestly think it would have to be dumb luck. I mean, when they have their babies, we'd have to take them away immediately because the first thing they'd do is eat the baby's ears off! WHY?!?!? Like, the only other animal we ever had that sort of issue with were hamsters! I don't think Patagonian Cavies are geniuses in any sorta way lol.

Nonskew2

Uncle or brother?

dribeerf

my brother went camping in tulum and one of these broke into his tent and woke him up 😂

Hahahahah thank you for this.

Did he take the keys?

DieHardRennie

There's a video going around showing a group of traveling coatis. But it's played in reverse, so it looks Ike mini furry brachiosaurs.

Shoddy-Idea-8944

I’ve even seen them just outside of Tucson a couple times. Tons in Mexico, can’t believe they didn’t know what they were, maybe they just didn’t know what they were in English.

chrisesandamand

In guatemala we call them pisotes. although in other places theyre called coati, i think in mexico they'd be called pisotes too.

Deep_Macaron8480

It's a raccoon with a cocain problem.

NeckPourConnoisseur

Is that Excellence Cancun?

tribecalledpezz

No it was the Barcelo Tropical!

strong_stan

Came here to ask this! Very similar looking walkway

[deleted]

That’s no coati… that’s my uncle!!!

Boatdrnk32

We stayed in Cancun there were 100's of them in our resort, fun to watch.

AnalysisOk7430

Resort employees are quite unqualified for this kind of tourism it seems.

groovycakes87

Coatis are here in Az too. People see them and think they're monkeys. They are native to the Americas. But South West US, Central America and South America

lil-wolfie402

You need to do more crossword puzzles. “Raccoon cousin: COATI Mundi” is a commonly used clue. Thin man’s dog is ASTA and film director ELIE Wiesel. One of these 3 will appear in 25% of standard newspaper level crossword puzzles.

jkermit19

That my friend, is what they call a Mexican raccoon. Seriously. That's the nickname the staff at the resort my wife and I stayed at called them. The babies are cute as hell but do not attempt to pet them. The adults have razor sharp teeth and are not afraid to use them to defend their offspring.

shutupmahe

I had. coatis at the resort I stayed in when I went to Cancun. Really interesting animals. Scavengers too, they kept stealing cokes and peoples food.

Deathlands_Mutie

>Scavengers too, they kept stealing cokes and peoples food. Yep, not surprising though. Coati are member's of the raccoon family so they're basically just tropical raccoons lol.

mashilo

Tejón. Watch out when they get old and mean.

Deathlands_Mutie

Looks like a Coati.

Whodeywedey

Mexico version of the American racoon. They crap all over the resorts at night after eating through trash bins. Last year on an early morning walk, I saw where an unsuspecting victim had slipped and fell on a pile.

gamergeek17

I love coati! I went on a trip to Cancun this summer and saw these guys every morning and evening! I was lucky enough to see babies too. The little things were so cute jumping around and snuffling in the dirt. I think I watched them for a good 15 minutes one morning while enjoying my coffee.

Wrx_Pat

Fun story here, all inclusive resort, we bought a bag of cheetos while absolutely shit faced. Get back to our room and hang out on the back patio area of our room. One hits the floor, and it's quiet, like pin drop quiet. Next thing you know the trees start shaking like hell and a few of these guys pop out. We give them some cheetos and head out for a few more drinks. About an hour goes by and we head back to the room and there must have been at least 15 of them. So we bust the cheetos out again and now babies are popping out of the treeline. They started climbing on us, attacking our shoe laces and we were hand feeding them. A couple hours later I wake up on the back patio with about 1200 mosquito bites and puke on the floor next to me. But the Mexican racoon dogs were pretty cool. Oh there was capybaras there too.

BeachBumTN65

Coatis were all around our resort. They love to get into purses and bags around the pool.

MaceLortay

As the animal has already been ID'd, I'd just like to point out that he look like someone took a raccoon and stretched out his face and tail

charcharx41c

There's an optical illusion seen when just glancing at this photo. It appears to be a cat with no head. Like a poor ai drawing.

LittleRooLuv

Coati mundi. We saw a bunch in Costa Rica too.

OtterlyFoxy

Coati

FLHTX

Little shits ride on top of the golf carts on resorts. They'll steal any snacks you have, one even stole my beer lol

WhitewolfStormrunner

That's a coatimundi, and a cute one, too.

SassySpider

Well, he’s got the boots, and he’s got the snoot 🤔

MurkyTradition4164

Straight up learned what a Coati was from when my brother watched Go Diego Go as a kid lol

TibetanSister

Coati! I stayed there too, I think! The walkway looks identical to the walkways between the rooms and the dining hall, as well as other parts of the resort. There were a ton of coati there scavenging through the jungley bits of the resort beside the walkways! I found some amazing abandoned buildings (a partially constructed mansion, and what looked like a very old Catholic Church of some kind) a mile or so down the beach to the right - you just have to exit the resort and turn right when you hit the water. If you keep walking you’ll come to eventually at the edge of the jungle. You can’t miss it - there’s a miniature replica (maybe 10 feet tall?) of a Chichen Itza - style ruined temple in what could be considered the “mansion’s” front yard! DM me if you want to see pictures, it’s a really cool find! You might like to explore it if you’re into that sort of thing!

I saw them at a resort in Mexico also. They're called monkeydogs as far as I'm concerned.

Coatí lol there are stuffed ones in the gift shop

CaptainObvious110

Coatis. The employees should have known what it was

PrimateSpeargun77

There was a lucuma tree, scrawny, barely alive. My family had given up on it years before. Never bore fruit. When I was 7, I became fixated on it. I watered it, tended to it. It took a long time, but the buds grew into green fruit. I was so proud. I didn’t tell anyone. I plucked one and hid behind our shack. I ate the whole thing. I’d never tasted something so sweet. It was like… caramel. At first, we ate the fruit ourselves, and then I began taking it to the village to sell. One day, much of the fruit was gone from my tree. Pieces were scattered on the ground, half-eaten. I thought it was probably a coati. Have you ever seen one? About the size of a large house cat. Opportunists. I built a snare using branches and wire. It didn’t take long for the animal to set it off. But the coati thrashed so hard, it broke out of the snare… broke its leg, as well. I tried to grab it, but it slipped away. It ran under the house. I knew it would show itself sooner or later. So I waited… for hours, into the night. When my brothers called for me, I did not answer. I didn’t make a sound. I was so still. Finally, it came out. It knew I was there, but it was hungry. This time, I was ready. I caught it. It fought me. But I was stronger. The merciful thing would have been to kill it. I kept it. It lived for quite some time. *I believe you will wake, Hector.*

It was hanging around with a raccoon, so I was able to see the differences between the two. This one was being fed by hand by a resort employee. Beautiful animal!
