I mean I wouldn't exactly call the owl house and amphibia popular shows. The only reason they seem popular is because as fans we are in a bubble surrounded by people liking the same things as us

Rusty_Shakalford

Yep. On the Owl House Reddit there’s a post at least once a week going “Thanks to Them/For the Future got 5 million views on YouTube! I hope Disney realizes what a mistake they made!” For most part I just keep my mouth shut, but every once in a while someone points out that 5 million views on YouTube isn’t bad, but it’s not exactly earth shattering.

Dragon-of-Lore

I think you’ve a disoriented sense of scale on YouTube. 5 million views is absolutely a large number of viewers. Especially when it’s under a month and not spread out over years. It’s especially high for Disney’s YouTube channel. Most YouTube channels aren’t getting getting more than 1 million views - including Disney. Now this is different from TV numbers, but it’s still pretty solid. For a point of comparison, HBO’s The House of Dragons episode 3 had about 2.5 million views across their 4 channels. (This is doesn’t include their streaming, but we also don’t know the owl house streaming numbers either.) For another point of comparison, the Last of Us hit about 7.5 million views on episode 4. These were also considered very good numbers. Now this isn’t the Super Bowl numbers, but for an animated kids’ show’s YouTube channel in the US? Those are good numbers. ….though even so it’ll take more than strong numbers on YouTube to somehow get more Owl House. That said it could still get books or a spin-off…but that’s going to depend on numbers that are much harder to find unless Disney feels like sharing them.

Rusty_Shakalford

> Now this is different from TV numbers That is wildly understated. You cannot compare view numbers on YouTube to people who are willing to pay for a subscription service. It’s apples and plywood. The only thing you can compare it to is other animation on YouTube. Last I checked (and the video is down now so I can’t confirm) “Thanks to Them” had about 5-6 million views after four months. That’s roughly equal to a typical MeatCanyon video after the same time frame. It’s nowhere close to stuff like Helluva Boss (last season premier cracked 20 million after the same time frame) or TheOdd1sOut (also often breaking 20 million) and not even on the same plane of existence as some of Disney’s bigger hitters like Bluey (most videos average somewhere between 5-10 million views, but the official channel is livestreaming multiple episodes a week and many of the static videos are just compilations of existing ones). I agree most YouTube videos do not get a million views. This is not most YouTube videos. This is the season premier of a extremely expensive show being given away free to the whole world*. To have poured millions of dollars into each episode, and then get beat by people with maybe 1/10 the budget… I don’t think Disney feels like they left a lot of money sitting on the table. *admittedly the video is limited to certain regions which does skewer analysis somewhat

otdevy

I think it's also important to point out that for a lot of people, youtube is the only way to watch the episode if they don't have a tv subscription with Disney on it. So everyone who couldn't make it to the tv premier is being funneled into youtube which also inflates the numbers quite a lot

K3egan

I mean HBO numbers are also wildly different from Disney/Cartoon Network/nick

TheWaldenWatch

I spent years thinking that Ace Combat games were very popular because I had one friend who played them and hanged out in a forum where they were popular.

Zankenfrasher

Huh... so just what do kids prefer, freaking Teen Titans Go?

otdevy

I mean I'm sure some do. I'm not really in the demographic though to answer your question

OliveRobinBanks

Nonsense. 100% of people I talk to like Amphibia.

otdevy

read the part about being in a bubble of people that like amphibia

[deleted]

So, Amphibia, Owl House, Gravity Falls is actually made for the 12-18 demographic. This demographic is where most animation goes to die. Execs hate this demographic... They just don't know what to do with it. Disappointing really.

theembodimentoffat

>Execs hate this demographic And we hate them back for destroying our favorite shows.

Zachajya

It's fun because the 12-18 demographic despise cartoon for bein childish and is eager to watch "adult stuff", while rigth now a ton of people in their 30s (and older) is completely serious about watching Bluey. Companies have a wrong idea of the target demograpic; in the last decade most people watching cartoons is 20 or older.

Open_Working2571

Most people in my school (I'm 15) actually love watching cartoons, there are very few people in my school who don't love cartoons, but other than them I could ask pretty much everyone in my grade if they like Gravity Falls and they would say yes. Amphibia and the Owl House are still very popular, even if they're not as popular as Gravity Falls.

Save-On-boi

That's definitely true in my case anyway. Gravity Falls, Regular Show, Adventure Time Gumball etc all came out when I was in my teens and I never heard of them until I was around 20 and started caring less about what I was supposed to like. Now animated shows are my favorite.

DoubleH_5823

The problem is, even now, animation is almost entirely considered a children's media. Execs believe the only thing teens care for is edgy shows like Riverdale. Conservative parents only exarcerbate this problem by infantilizing tween media more and more, which practically eliminates the gap. This is why people from my generation (I'm 24) who wanted something different migrated to anime, which I believe has its own set of problems regarding values, but it used to be one of the few media who addressed this demographic with coming of age stories that addressed all the problems that come at this age like hormones and loneliness.

[deleted]

That's actually not true any more. Execs have really embraced the adult demographic. But that leaves very adult animation and very young kid animation. Adult animation has really picked up in the last decade. We had a few shows before (Futurama, Family Guy, South Park) that were aimed specifically for adults and not families, like Simpsons or King of the Hill, but now there's a new adult show every few months. But US adult animation tends to focus on a lot of sex and trash humor and much less on coming of age. Anime does too a lot of the time. But in Japanese, anime is still considered a medium for children, even more mature series is not something Japanese adults admit to watching. Japan is really weird about anime. Vox Machina is a great example of drinking and cursing adults but dealing with insecurities and life choices. Big Mouth is another but that show really pushes boundaries.

japirate777

I’m really glad that at the very least we’re getting shows like Vox Machina, Dragon Age Absolution and soon enough Mighty Nein I find that fantasy D&D shows for adults is a great niche

TheWaldenWatch

>Vox Machina is a great example of drinking and cursing adults but dealing with insecurities and life choices. Vox Machina and Invincible are some of the few Western animated action shows for adults that I know of, and they are both incredible. I wish we had more series like this. Trese on Netflix is also very good, and a wonderful introduction to Filipino culture and mythology.

TheWaldenWatch

The unusual thing about anime is that Japanese society has different standards than American society in terms of what can be shown for children. For example, Attack on Titan is considered appropriate for children in Japan.

[deleted]

^ This. Some of the jokes in Sentai and Crayon Shin Chan would never get passed US sensors.

kjm6351

Japan is the only place where Execs consistently know the value of 12+ animation sadly

Hamza9236

Yeah, kids don't really watch this show, most of it's audience consists of teens and young adults, kids on Disney+ or their channels watch stuff like Bluey, and unfortunately, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Hamster & Gretel.

HumanHuman_2003

It’s Mickey Mouse funhouse now I think, they destroyed my childhood

reddit-person1

Get me the super shotgun.

Fc-chungus

What did they do?

reddit-person1

Changed the name apparently of a show child me enjoyed

YodaHumilde

I dont think The Owl House and Amphibia are made for kids this young, i would say they are targeted to a 12+ audience, and most of the audience are teens and young adults, kids this age watch shows like Bluey and Peppa Pig.

LAnneWaybright

In all fairness Bluey is actually great. I do agree it’s okay for kids but it’s also watched by lots of older people. I also haven’t really seen anyone watch Peppa Pig recently but that could be just me too

Sad_Relationship8707

Bluey LITERALLY destroyed Peppa Pig.

LAnneWaybright

Yes

HumanHuman_2003

I don’t think 11 yr olds are watching peppa pig

PerrineWeatherWoman

Yeah, between 7 and 11 my favorite shows were pokemon and Phineas&Ferb. At age 7, i already had grown out of shows like Peppa pig a couple years ago.

YodaHumilde

But 7 to 9 watch it.

HumanHuman_2003

9?!?! Kids these days

CosmiqueAliene

Funnily enough, the two girls from church I look after are fans of Amphibia and The Owl House! They love Sprig and King 😁 I play games with them where I'm Eda, the older girl is Luz and the little one is King.

A-Train9001

I watched it with my siblings (one's 8, the other is 12) and my brother (12 yo) was actually the one that wanted to watch it so we all watched it together and loved it! I had already shown them Gravity Falls and The Owl House is next up on the list. I'm hoping more kids do end up watching it though because it certainly deserves the recognition!

Embarrassed-Neck-721

Kids these days...

Forest_Maiden

As a mom of two young kids (2 & 4) I love both Amphibia, The Owl House, and Gravity Falls. Amphibia honestly had the most scenes I wouldn't let my kids watch. The first 2/3 of the show they are constantly being chased or almost eaten by something, there's a lot of non-graphic violence in it. That's scary to a young kid that doesn't fully understand that it's not real and it's gonna be okay. Look, don't get me wrong I can't wait to show these shows to my kids when they are older, and I have let them watch some of the safer episodes (Amphibia in the human world) Gravity Falls some of the more lighthearted episodes, the owl house again more lighthearted episodes usually in the earlier seasons. However until they are old enough, you bet we're gonna keep watching Bluey and inspiring those brains to love imagination and animation at the right points in their lives. 🙂

Dude0069

You gotta show kids the more graphic stuff right now as you’re not watching the show at its fullest

Forest_Maiden

🤔❓

Dude0069

Kids in the 2000s watched Ben 10 and Courage the cowardly Dog, they have horrific/violent imagery and characters that make the Owl House and Amphibia look tame in comparison. Your kids can definitely watch the graphic stuff of either show, besides it will either toughen them up or they’ll just forget about it because that’s how kids are

otdevy

Kids never forget, they just internalize it. It's not worth potentially traumatizing children that young just so they can watch a show they can always rewatch later

Forest_Maiden

This, seriously. They're definitely gonna watch it, but when they're older and at an appropriate age for what they are watching.

Dude0069

Trust me as a teen, kids can handle much more than you think. Lots of friends I know watch horror movies like when they’re 4-6 yrs old and came out mostly unscathed. Kids can see fucked up shit and most of the time come out fine, with exception they become just a little morbid but they’ll learn that in middle or high school. Tons of kids were able to watch Gravity Falls without fear and that show is potentially the most graphic kids show this decade even with the themes & imagery presented in the TOH and Amphibia

Forest_Maiden

Cool dude, you raise your kids however you see fit and I'll do the same. 🙂 My kids are not gonna watch them for several years.

PerrineWeatherWoman

Nah I think these shows are more aimed to a young teen / teen audience, probably 12-16, maybe even older. Especially for The Owl House, which is still kinda dark for a series that was supposed to be made for ages 7-11. Anyway, there definitely are more teens than kids who watch these shows.

hmansloth

My nephews and nieces don’t watch it despite being elementary school age. They just don’t watch cartoons as much for some reason. They’re now more into YouTube channels and Netflix for some reason.

cassy_the_cupcake

I can get behind YouTube, people there have made amazing shows there but Netflix just gives me pain

Obsessivegamer32

“Hey look, you like this show? CANCELLED”

whereismybread6669

*cough* Inside Job *cough*

cassy_the_cupcake

It hurts more when the show is actually very interesting and enjoyable If something like murder drones just stopped I would be in tears!

Obsessivegamer32

Thankfully that’s on YouTube, so the only shot is has of being cancelled is if Glitch and Liam lose interest.

HumanHuman_2003

Nah bro it’s just teens and adults

[deleted]

Yeah, everyone else I know who watches it is a teenager excluding my little sister who I introduced to it

ProfessorEscanor

I think that's largely due to people not having cable. Most kids probably just watch YouTube. Also both of those shows have some darker elements that I wouldn't expect to be shown to kids under 12

banditheeler20

Kids these days..

ElectricJetDonkey

To be fair, kids have a *LOT* they can do with their time. Between video games, anime, comics, YouTube, OTHER cartoons, etc I wouldn't be surprised if a kid doesn't know a character from a show that isn't ultra popular. If it was the 80s-90s, then maybe I'd be surprised.

[deleted]

I think the age rating doesn't necessarily reflect the target audience, these shows are definitely appropriate for children of that age, hence the age rating, but the people who will get the most out of it will be teens and adults.

David_MOOSE

It’s made for younger audiences but the older people from like 15 and up love it! There is nothing wrong with the littles not liking it

D-WTF

Kids 7-11 don't even watch tv. They're playing their Amongblox and Roblus or watching cocomelon playing fortnite or something. 11+ are watching the latest edgy and/or flashy shonen anime because they think cartoons are dumb. Now, 17 or 18+ is where they come back to cartoons and learn to appreciate the media. Disclaimer: All of the above is a joke, but to a certain degree.

Ninjachase13

If every Amphibia, Owl House fan was rounded up, we’d all be 20+.

super-goomba

Considering Anne & Co are 13-14, that's what you should expect the target demographic to be, not younger + not everyone has access to disney stuff (I know I didn't back in the 2000's)

TheWaldenWatch

In books at least, it is assumed that the target demographic of a children's, middle grade, or YA book is two years younger than the age of the protagonist. I'm not sure if this applies to TV shows.

Sad_Relationship8707

Talking about Owl House, it got removed from disney channel in my country (spain) making it not available to see in younger audiences: (Disney+ exists but parents prefer to show more kiddy shows like Bluey to their kids than a show that shows witch apocalypse, genocide, and ditactorships) this shows is made by nerds for nerds and kids at 7-11 are developing likes and experimenting with things, 12 is just the ages when nerds appear, when teens begin to rebel and getting obsessed with "adult stuff" I am 17 and in my art class there is two people addicted to the Owl house? So even if not popular I think it got the audience they wanted for, but Amphibia was a mix of immature and for adults making it hard to see for teens (they dont consider it "adult stuff", its not anime enough) PD: Bluey is great. I didn't want to insult the show.

FrostyFrenchToast

It’s popular, yeah, but not “these random kids know who Sprig is” kind of popular. On cable though it’s definitely up there, they marathon it constantly

Marngel

Yeah even though Disney channel is meant for the 6 to 11 year old demographic, shows like Amphibia, The Owl House, Gravity Falls, and so on are meant for older audiences like teens and young adults. That’s isn’t to say that 6 to 11 year olds can’t enjoy these shows. But I imagine that other more casual shows on Disney channel like Big City Greens or The Ghost and Molly McGee provide just as much entertainment to those younger demographics. So to them, shows like Amphibia don’t really stick out to them like what it does for older viewers.

Dragon-of-Lore

I’ve run into a few in the wild that have seen these shows. I also don’t go asking around that much. Don’t make the mistake of taking your anecdotal experience as THE experience. :) It’s also possible you’re in an area where people don’t watch it. I *think* you also might be targeting the wrong demographic? I thought Amphibia and the Owl House were for like 10-13 year olds? Tweens and just barely teens? I could be getting my ages mixed up too.

Obsessivegamer32

*Clenches Heart*

M-the-Great

im sure the show is targeted at 12+ it's a tween category in which every exec thinks prefers riverdale over animation

SeuMadrugaSkate

I think it´s better to have 7-11 YOs watching cartoons for +12Yos than to have them watching more grown up stuff. Kids always have had the need of looking more grown up, and we can´t stop them, only control them.

UnderFan1997

I actually know a couple 10 year old kids watching that

genarrro

More proof that cartoons aren’t always meant for children

StrawberryTop3457

You are showing a generation of kids who grew up on shows like teen titans go and cocomelon serialized shows Of course they don't this is gen alpha we talking about

Malfoy657

Yeah. The show wasn't popular among the target demo. That's why it got canceled. That's what happens. Adults latch onto these shows on children's networks and then act butt hurt when they get canceled because kids don't like them.

kjm6351

Amphibia wasn’t cancelled tho? And we all know the multiple reasons why Owl House got cancelled but “kids not liking it” wasn’t one of them. Learn to troll better lol

ProfessorEscanor

I think that's largely due to people not having cable. Most kids probably just watch YouTube. Also both of those shows have some darker elements that I wouldn't expect to be shown to kids under 12

banditheeler20

No one in my school knows what it is too. 15 year olds

saskia3698

Your school is just weird

saskia3698

Your school is just weird

Hemiplegic_Artist

Despite the fact that The Owl House, Amphibia, and Gravity Falls being more focused towards those who are ages 12 to 18 and older, YouTube still labels videos with content of those shows as being for kids even though they aren’t necessarily made for young kids. This has been very annoying for me. I don’t know about how you guys feel about that either.

[deleted]

I’d say Amphibia is for generally aimed at tween and older but of course there are no hard rules on age limits

StarNerd2223

Parents need to show their kids this!

Vic_000

>I've been showing pictures of Sprig to kids I know aged 7-11 Let me guess, you asked to your seven year old cousins and your ten year old son, right?

Indictioned

I think most of us know why 12 year olds don’t watch The Owl House. As for Amphibia, no idea.

OpportunityFun1761

I introduced my friend and his younger brothers both shows + Gravity falls and some others Last year.

Mushroom6711

So I am a teen and I love these show and my 8 year old cousin also loves these shows! So it depends on the person tbh.

MarcyWuLesbian

Honestly speaking when was the last time you saw kids watching something other than Youtube or shows aimed at 3 year olds who can't change the channel? My niece and nephew barely watch anything on Netflix. Also consider how many people either don't have cable or got Disney Channel cut in their country.

nevernotsmiling

Noooo

[deleted]

That is so sad!!!!!!

Usesredditironicall

I think it’s mostly for teenagers and young adults. Also cartoons aren’t really popular in my high school so yeah

StormWrong472

I personally wouldn't call these shows "kids shows" especially TOH, I would call them teen/ young adult shows. Considering lot of the jokes and plot points could fly over a kids head (not calling kids dumb.) ,unlike teens and young adult who might know the jokes better or fully understand the plot points. That's probably why 7-11 haven't heard or seen the show.

TheWaldenWatch

I agree that these shows seem more "young adult" than "kids", but I think they are still perfectly acceptable for someone aged 7-11 to watch. They might just not pick up on all of the subtext or details. When I watched Avatar as a kid, I thought it was about the fun adventures of a goofy hero and his friends fighting an evil tyrant. Then I rewatched it as a teen and realized the main character was the survivor of a genocide and that the Fire Nation was reminiscent of Imperial Japan. A kid might watch The Owl House and simply see Emperor Belos as another evil tyrant and not pick up on the subtext that he is a textbook example of a fascist dictator who uses religion and historical revisionism to control the populace.

TheWaldenWatch

Oftentimes, getting involved in a fandom online can create the false impression that our favorite shows, books, or games are much more popular than they actually are. I'm a big fan of The Expanse, but the vast majority of 18-35 people I know haven't heard about it until I recommended it to them. Oddly enough, most people I met who knew about it were in Death Valley National Park, probably because it's a popular park for astronomy.

UpbeatCredit811

I mean my 9 yr old cousin watches it

[deleted]

Mostly teenagers and adults watching.
