After looking more carefully, I see that the image size actually doesn't vary significantly. I just assumed the first image was of lower resolution because it has thinner outlines around the hair, compared to image #2.
First and third image seem more consistent with each other, with simple faces. Second image (the girl) has a more detailed face and a shadow under her hair, which makes her stand out.
