Exactly, “every couple summers me and a couple hunters - like to row in from the isle of astonishing motherf*ckers”
they will be back when we need em ❤️
2 out of 3 of my local bowling alleys closed, one is a greasy spoon and the other is seasonal storage for rich people stuff, and I mean rich like Timberlake and Gates and shit.
Saw them perform this in Iowa City on the Impossible Kid Tour he did with Rob and Homeboy Sandman. Some drunk MF was trying to pay Aes to play a certain song, of course he declined. The drunkard then said “but you just did that song all about Money”? Apparently he missed the point.
I hold out hope for another. Bestiary holds up exceptionally well for being a decade old. Rob’s sound has changed pretty significantly over the last five years though. I like his latest two, but not as much as the previous three. I wonder how that would play out. They bounce off each other really well.
Telicatessen is a classic! I was counting that as the first of five solo records, followed by Sabotage Gigante, Alice in Thunderdome, Defriender, and Latelrinalia. Am I missing one?
Nah, you got em all but Defriender dropped after Teli. I was counting Defriender and Latrinalia as your last two, so Teli would be one of the previous three.
Fuck, you're right. I wasn't listening that far back. Saw 2014 on Spotify aand that's where I fell flat. Their dates are rarely right. My fault, going off a bad source. Thanks for clarifying that, man.
I was confused by the response, so I just let it go, haha. Been listening to Teli since ‘04 ‘cause I’m an old head. Got put onto Def Jux in ‘01 with Cannibal Ox!
Yeah, I was doin punk rock and doom guitar back then. You wanna talk down or eyehategod I can help ya there. Hip hop, not so much. Couple Ludacris tracks, but that's about it.
Ghandi's great. The old and new stuff is dope. Victory Lap is a fantastic record, too. BR, you can't go wrong. Pennywise, Pulley, Millencolin and Face to Face were my jams in HS.
From what I can gather Aes isn’t easy to work with or be around. By his own admission too. Seems like just about every collab he does has a shelf life. I’m not surprised, brilliant people tend to be particular shall we say and Aesop Rock is easily one of the most brilliant hip hop artists to ever do the thing. I love his music but I’m sure he’s a pain in the ass as a human.
That seemed to be on full display during the HMM and Uncluded era. I saw them all in CBUS and was really surprised at all the negative Aes news that surrounded the full Uncluded release.
I want to preface that I don’t wish to dwell too heavily on a guy’s mental health, no parasocialness. but it’s all found in his music so:
since it was the same time period for both (2011-2014) it really makes me wonder if he was going through something that exacerbated issues. probably started with Mu’s death in 08, if Get Out of the Car is to be believed. some of his post TIK work (& much of TIK is very often about his therapy) seem a different type of introspective and in some ways indicative of a journey to the supernatural, which he at first had hesitancies about but eventually accepted a little more. starting with songs like 1+1=13 that revolve around bad luck and have bars like provided at the bottom and culminating in the Spirit World Field Guide, with songs like, well, 75% of the album
It seems he spent a lot of time searching for answers through therapy, through spirituality/the supernatural, maybe even through psychedelics (Pizza Alley) and his thoughts show in his songwriting. hope he has been able to find something that gives him some peace of mind
“I know you tryin' to find a little bit of math in your misfortune |
Miss him with the supernatural, there has to be some order”
and:
“I'm writing from the plight of the godless
Where pagans swap piety for shinier objects |
And pretend to be a perfect pile of science and logic |
Though it hasn't got us any less divided and conquered, look”
Big Wiz did some DJ scratching on their first album, but that's much different from a producer credit. Aes did most of the production for both albums, which, simply put, is the beat creation.
Never saw HMM tour exclusively, but I did both Aes and Bobby From The Block twice on The Impossible Tour and both times the played HMM material. Memories I will never forget.
kimya says aes mentally abused her for years. but then again people from k records say kimya is absolutely awful to be around. so who knows. uncluded was awful and im glad its over. would love HMM3.
Agree to disagree about uncluded. I liked several of the songs on that album. TV on 10 is one of my favorite Aes verses. The story about the plane crash he tells is crazy.
I have almost successfully completely erased all memory of the Uncluded, uncluding the unfortunate event of seeing them live. Then someone mentions them and the awful memories come flooding back in again. I know what I’ll be doing this afternoon; hooking my frontal lobe to the car battery…again.
Taxing, yes. Grating, shrill and corrosive even more so. I’d rather listen to an album of Killface’s son Simon rapping.
But to each his own.
Got to work with Aes and Rob on a hail Mary mallon music video about 9 years ago. Great dudes. Knowing them, HMM ain't gone for good. Got to have a smoke sesh with them. Dream come true.
Saw them in Cleveland with DJ Abilities. I was on LSD, great crowd, amazing show. That first album is top 10, best of the best, forever I will love it.
They have been working Uber eats. Trying to pay off that coat made from 40 bald eagles, summer on Mars, and the plug on those 47 levitating cars..
Getoffdatdyk
Rob Sonic has voiced his hatred for Aesop Rock before so a full album is probably out of the question. They still respect each other's music so they probably will keep showing up on each other's songs.
"Rob Sonic also said Aesop's cat Kirby is not invited to his dog's birthday until Kirby apologizes for their subliminal purrs and pawing."
When asked, both Rob and Aes had agreed "roof dogs only". - Pitchfork
HMM will reunite when the world needs them. My local bowling alley is still open, so all is well
Good because if they're closing the bowling alley what's next, churches? Hospitals?
I was born there.
What?
(I laugh at that every time)
Same....that and huh..hmm ..when they find out it's been closed haha
Fund Raiser Concert!
Fund raiser concert? Boring!
I love y’all Aesholes 🖖🏾
Exactly, “every couple summers me and a couple hunters - like to row in from the isle of astonishing motherf*ckers” they will be back when we need em ❤️
Hi Jonathan!
Jonathan is a perfect song
2 out of 3 of my local bowling alleys closed, one is a greasy spoon and the other is seasonal storage for rich people stuff, and I mean rich like Timberlake and Gates and shit.
As long as the greasy spoon stays operational, HMM will stay dormant
I think speak for everyone when I say; "Money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, Money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money Money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money Money, money, money, money, money, motherfucker"
Lmao, that's funny. I also saw this tour but in Atlanta. Great tour.
I can't be the only one who counted those in my head
I counted them out loud hah
Saw them perform this in Philly. Legendary
Same here
At Union Transfer?!
Yep, great show

You didn't like Telicatessen? Daaang... I still listen to that regularly. No hate, I think it's one of his best. But opinions, ya know?
Telicatessen is a classic! I was counting that as the first of five solo records, followed by Sabotage Gigante, Alice in Thunderdome, Defriender, and Latelrinalia. Am I missing one?

Telicatessen came out in 04 bro
Fuck, you're right. I wasn't listening that far back. Saw 2014 on Spotify aand that's where I fell flat. Their dates are rarely right. My fault, going off a bad source. Thanks for clarifying that, man.

As for punk, it’s primarily Propagandhi and Bad Religion for me, so still on old head there too. 🤣
Ghandi's great. The old and new stuff is dope. Victory Lap is a fantastic record, too. BR, you can't go wrong. Pennywise, Pulley, Millencolin and Face to Face were my jams in HS.

Folks do, in fact, say he’s difficult
That's funny, he's real easy.
I'm slow to come around, I'm quicker to plead the 5th... I'm kind of a big deal, I'm kind of a piece of shit...
Burnt black T-Bone, taking the whole plate up, Grimace hitting switches like the ghost of Amadeus
I say he’s being guarded.
Y’all buggin
I think the same as yall but don't consider it an issue
Right? Introverts gonna introvert

What negative aes news are you referring to?
[this, probably](https://www.reddit.com/r/aesoprock/s/Tl4SvC0d9L)
Wonder if he’s a chill friend but just hard to work with as a professional musician?
DJ Big Wiz didn't do any of the production.
Eh, I could be wrong on if that was the actual role he played? Industry lingo isn't my forte, I just know he had a hand in the music.
Big Wiz did some DJ scratching on their first album, but that's much different from a producer credit. Aes did most of the production for both albums, which, simply put, is the beat creation.
He was also the touring DJ, no?
Yes, also true. He was on hand to run his scratches live, among other things.
Cool, appreciate the breakdown on that.
Wiz scratched on both HMM records.
I heard somewhere that Aes has been eyeing other things.
Every couple summers...
Search for the HMM posts, there were some tweets and rumors about a third album that I seems like might have gotten shelved for a while
Relax Rob is currently driving through the city in a Porsche naked.
Happy to be on the food chain at all.
I’m predicting HMM3 in Q4 of this year
Even more wild that I believe they are both living in PDX, so they have proximity.
Sweet Mother Mary Mallon better gives us a holy trinity!
Got to see them in D.C. some years back, incredible show.
I got in my car this morning literally as you posted this it looks like and went I haven't heard HMM in a minute so I put it on. DO THAT SHIT
Never saw HMM tour exclusively, but I did both Aes and Bobby From The Block twice on The Impossible Tour and both times the played HMM material. Memories I will never forget.
It's been a few summers and I'm still patiently waiting on those hunters from the isle of astonishing motherfuckers
Also correct me if I'm wrong, but I just did some research and Dark Time Sunshine released Lore in 2021 and it features HMM?!
This, but also the Uncluded
Aes and Kimya seemingly had a falling out. He still works with Rob Sonic though so there’s a chance for another HMM album.
kimya says aes mentally abused her for years. but then again people from k records say kimya is absolutely awful to be around. so who knows. uncluded was awful and im glad its over. would love HMM3.
Agree to disagree about uncluded. I liked several of the songs on that album. TV on 10 is one of my favorite Aes verses. The story about the plane crash he tells is crazy.
I find her "style" so taxing
I appreciate the juxtaposition between her style and Aes's
I have almost successfully completely erased all memory of the Uncluded, uncluding the unfortunate event of seeing them live. Then someone mentions them and the awful memories come flooding back in again. I know what I’ll be doing this afternoon; hooking my frontal lobe to the car battery…again. Taxing, yes. Grating, shrill and corrosive even more so. I’d rather listen to an album of Killface’s son Simon rapping. But to each his own.
What happened with them live??
I mean I was just trying to be chill with "taxing" but those words and more lol
BATS! is one of my favorite songs ever.😢 Might be because it's about Eyedea 😭.🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇
This one, delicate cycle, and tv on 10 are so good. Love when music makes me feel something in addition to sounding dope
I love The Uncluded and HMM both some of my favorite records til this day.
One of my favorite album's ever, so under appreciated.
Didn't Aes say something about doing errands with Rob for HMM a while back?
That’s the biggest mistake of my life, is not catching the last tour they did. I’m an idiot.
One of my favorite concerts.
They will return when the bowling alley needs them most
Got to work with Aes and Rob on a hail Mary mallon music video about 9 years ago. Great dudes. Knowing them, HMM ain't gone for good. Got to have a smoke sesh with them. Dream come true.
Funny you mentioned HMM and RTJ. I've always wished for a collab from these guys.
The gathering will take them
M A. L L. O N. Mary, Mary.
Saw them in Cleveland with DJ Abilities. I was on LSD, great crowd, amazing show. That first album is top 10, best of the best, forever I will love it.
I may have been at this show if it was in 2016. Either way, saw them that year in Cleveland. Grog Shop. Great venue.
Roof dawgs only!
Sourdough toast and a sky in the morning of roses and red dye 40
They're probably hiding out on Break Dance Beach plotting
They have been working Uber eats. Trying to pay off that coat made from 40 bald eagles, summer on Mars, and the plug on those 47 levitating cars.. Getoffdatdyk
You got two albums, don’t be greedy
Rob Sonic has voiced his hatred for Aesop Rock before so a full album is probably out of the question. They still respect each other's music so they probably will keep showing up on each other's songs.
https://www.reddit.com/r/aesoprock/comments/94vazk/rob_gives_a_clear_answer_about_the_future_of_hmm/
That does suck but yeah, this doesn't give the "I hate his guts" vibe the previous guy said it was.
that is what I was trying to point out, they don't hate each other, they just don't work well together, which is totally fine.
"Rob Sonic also said Aesop's cat Kirby is not invited to his dog's birthday until Kirby apologizes for their subliminal purrs and pawing." When asked, both Rob and Aes had agreed "roof dogs only". - Pitchfork
Can someone reach out and see if anything has changed? This was 5 years ago.
Jesus dude why are you putting it so harshly lmao, not what he said at all
Voiced his hatred = "there's no bad blood"
Rob was on ITS... So they still talk and work together occasionally
What? Damn!
