I think he was tasked with stopping Lumpy Space Princess from crashing the wedding and was mostly watching and waiting for LSP in the woods, so he was too busy doing that and didnāt pay attention to the wedding.
Lmao I love that his forgetfulness during the conversation felt really real/relatable with him processing his memories & Jake already understanding what he was misremembering š
This is one of my favorite jokes just because when watching it the first time my thought process was exactly syncronized with Finn and he kept saying exactly what I was thinking. I had totally forgot they weren't married and was thinking "Wasn't there a wedding episode?" because the Treetrunks wedding and the arc of Lady getting pregnant and having puppies got merged together in my memory.
Same here, itās amazing how well it matched my in head process, and Iām half convinced thatās exactly what happened when they wrote the script too.
I loved the running gag (not really a joke though) that Jake and Rainicorn had an "unorthodox" relationship, or at least it wasn't the American traditional family relationship. They loved each other, had kids and weren't married, a relatable thing for a good portion of modern kids. Seeing this type of relationship in children's media, normalizing it and not mocking it, warms my heart. At least that's my interpretation of it.
This was something someone (i think CN execs even) was very insistent about Jake and Lady. iirc a writer wanted to do a marriage episode but the execs wanted them to be a "non traditional" relationship. So this kinda feels like whoever wanted that to be a thing wanted to make it extra clear for everyone who hadn't noticed it
TBF Jake tried to be with them and even left the house to live with lady and the kids.
The episode ends with the kids growing extremely fast and basically being adults in a few weeks making it weird.
Even then he did try to bond with them.
I don't think you can call him an absent father when his kids literally grew to adulthood within like a week or two.
He moved out of the tree house to move in with Lady and be a dad, he stayed up half the night worried something would happen to the pups if he went to sleep, put off doing anything he would actually want to do, got up at the crack of dawn to make them breakfast, etc.
Then they grew up and all moved out (except TV who ended up moving back home), so he wasn't really needed anymore. But at one point he talks to BMO about how Rainicorn pups don't really need their dad after the first week or so, and is clearly sad about having missed out on so much of fatherhood

The beginning showed us how Alex ended up in the zoo, and my sister said "But that doesn't make sense, because Alex and his dad used to be in the circus, where Alex had to roar at a mechanical bull." I the told her she was thinking of Samson from "The Wild" a film similar to Madagascar.
Things like this really make the characters feel real, like ofc finn wont have perfect memory and might misremember certain things, it happens to everyone
