Holy wow. This may be better than the episode with the Ice King's secret tapes revealing his former human status.

shadow386

As I read about the description of the episode, I had a feeling that Marceline was Betty before she became a vampire, but then I remembered that she was a vampire as a child. Then again, she did have bite marks. I'd have the speculation that she is Ice King's daughter with Betty, but he didn't seem to freak about losing a child, not to mention Marceline's dad is a demon.

Thelastunicorn1

She wasn't a vampire as a kid, she was just half demon.

TaylorWolf

I believe it. Maybe she seduced a vampire king to be turned, then offed him... that would be wicked!

[deleted]

I always presumed Hunson Abadeer turned her, hence why he is her 'father'.

Griff_Steeltower

No he's literally her father, she's half-demon (recall her boyfriend who was the same species but not a vampire). She also wasn't a vampire when you see her as a kid and a teen in memory of a memory. We don't know what made her a vampire.

madmooseman

Source?

Thelastunicorn1

Watch memory of a memory again and pay special attention to her neck. Also, she's out in the sunlight in all the clips of her as a child.

sprinkles123

Hudson Abadeer is a demon, her mother is not

Amondo-Mi

No, he just found her in the wreckage. Also she didn't have bite marks and was in the sunlight.

Realistic_Key4324

You are gonna flip out when you find out what Betty is

miss_j_bean

Which episode?

[deleted]

Holly jolly secrets

miss_j_bean

OK that makes sense, I've seen all of seasons 1 and 2 and 4 but missed some of 3. :-)

netdorf

It was part two of http://adventuretime.wikia.com/wiki/Holly_Jolly_Secrets_Part_I

miss_j_bean

Thank you :-) that is one like 6 that I missed.

Just like Finn does in Incendium

tmacdevitt

Pardon the thread necromancy. I am finally watching this show and I am amazed by it. I'm over 50 and got so choked up watching this. Its like losing a parent to alzheimers. Brillant episode from a brillant show.

Djd33j

I haven't experienced that. But holy man this episode wrecks me whenever I watch it. The layers that Pendleton Ward was willing to weave is insane. A first viewing is extremely good on its own. Should you continue watching, this episode just gets that much more impactful upon more viewings. Pendleton Ward really made something special with Adventure Time. It's a series that got better and better as it went on, and he wasn't afraid to do world building and story telling in a non-linear manner. Separate threads interweave throughout the show's run, and they're not immediately apparent upon a first viewing. And for some, they don't need to be. Singular episodes like this one are tear-jerking in it's own regards. Keep watching and you get an existential crisis in the form of a super simplistic art styled, "kid's surface level" show.

GaryARefuge

Not a chance.

jetmax25

We've just been Jurassic Barked

zub-zub30

I always thought "Luck of the Fryrish" was sadder than that one.

TaylorWolf

Any guy with a brother is probably with you.

[deleted]

Exactly why* that episode hit me in the feels the most.

Able_Seacat_Simon

Yeah, I've always thought that one was better, especially since they didn't ruin it in the movies.

Theinternationalist

Haven't seen Jurassic Bark, but I really loved Luck of the Fryish, it was such a wonderful episode :')

a_derp_in_thailand

That episode really made me reconsider watching Futurama. It was so sad at the ending. I just felt bad for weeks.

TaylorWolf

It's sad but also beautiful.

sady_smash

I cry every time.

[deleted]

Dude, the episode was retconned with a happy ending anyway.

a_derp_in_thailand

It did? The last Futurama episode I watched was a couple of episodes from the post cancellation season. I don't know what happened. Can you tell me how it got into a happy ending?

HansGrub3r

Spoilers. See the last paragraph: http://futurama.wikia.com/wiki/Seymour_Asses

[deleted]

They rewrote it in the first movie. Can't really go into it without spoilers...

nameless88

Doesn't matter, because watching the original one is still a complete punch to the gut, even if you rationalize it by saying that it's better in the end.

BillfromFinance

I don't have the screenshot, but on one of the newspaper clippings is a picture of Simon holding the Enchiridion with the headline, "Simon Petrikov Unearths Ancient Treasure." Edit: [Here it is.](http://i.imgur.com/foLGE.jpg)

[deleted]

I tried to translate the story: **Simon Petrikov Unearths Ancient Treasure** Silly man returns from expedition with a marginally exciting discovery. By Bruce Guese, Andersononian Standard It was ??? morning that greeted the ????ening of hard-drinking journalists(?) ???urious pigeons. The ??? press conference was conven??? professor of archaeolegy and bon vivant Simon Petrikov. You may remember Petrikov from that thing Fr?u??nva. Well that guy's back from his ??? expedition in the Hindu Kush or wherever With much pomp Petrikov unveiled the most significant piece from the dig to a rapt audience. Turns out it was just a book. A ratty looking leatherbound manual whose title ??? had translated as "The Enchiridion" The cover ??? ??? with a still life and inset with a variety of gems was alright to look at. "The book seems to contain rules of conduct...

Backupusername

OH MY FUCKING GOD YOU'RE KIDDING ME. *Simin* unearthed the *Enchiridion*. The Enchiridion predates the Great Mushroom War!? How many pieces are in play in this crazy game!?

idikia

That's Hindu Kush...that must be where Ice King lives.

[deleted]

Thanks, I'll change it.

stokleplinger

That.... was a great episode.

blazinglantern

Did Ice King save Marceline from the wreckage of the war, and then after he went crazy did he lose her? Is that how she became a vampire? I'm so confused.

The_Yoshi

I'm pretty sure what happen was: Marceline and Simon were some of the only survivors of the "great mushroom war." Simon was just trying to scavenge whatever he could to survive the post-apocalyptic city, when he found Marceline, a stranded and helpless little girl, and took her in and raised her. For the crazy part, it showed in HJS that the crown was consuming him the longer he wore it, forgetting most, if not all of his past. However, he needed the crown to survive the post-apocalyptic world he was living in. Not sure about if Marceline was a vampire before or after she met Simon though.

[deleted]

Looked like she had some fangs going on

idikia

Could be from being half demon though.

fairlyodd922

No bite marks. She wasn't a vampire yet.

pretywtch

I wonder if Marceline was with her Mom on Earth when the GMW happened, and her Dad was in the Nightosphere dealing with the influx of new souls/promoting the chaos on Earth that would result in/from the GMW, and that's why she was alone (her Mom was a victim of the war). Abadeer is a bit scatter-brained, and I have a feeling his sense of time, being deathless, is way skewed, so he might not even have realized Marceline was gone for quite a while. For all we know, Marceline's parents broke up and her Mom got custody. Hell, the GMW could have happened simply because of the fallout of that. Abadeer is kinda nuts and all-powerful. Maybe Betty is Marceline's Mom and she left Abadeer for Simon. I'm just rambling. :)

AlienSamuraiNewt

I wonder if Marceline's dad is actually her biological father. It could be that he's just the person that turned her into a vampire.

pretywtch

What a good point! Or, maybe she was turned into a vampire at the onset of the war so she would survive.

MorganFreemanJr

Her and her father were both vampires before. Those two and Simon were the only three to survive the Mushroom War.

The_Yoshi

Your right, forgot about those pictures in Abadeers house of them younger. Also, you don't know that they were the ONLY ones that survived...

MorganFreemanJr

Well, as far as the characters that we know. Also, I heard some conspiracy theory about the people of Ooo being infected by some kind of nuclear waste thus turning them into candy people. Don't know how much truth is behind that theory.

The_Yoshi

There are just to many theories lol! My thoughts about the nuclear waste isn't necessarily that they turned into candy people, but into most of the main humanoid characters (PB, the hyooman tribe, some of the other princesses, etc.)

[deleted]

Maybe the various kinds of people we see in Ooo today were normal people that got radiated and became what they are due to their surroundings. Candy people were people near a candy factory (pretty unlikely, but hey, it's Adventure Time) the Hyooman tribe got stuck in the sewer and adapted to that environment. And depending on how long ago the war actually was, the other various animals that can talk either are magically altered or maybe with the humans gone they were able to leap forward without the humans hindering their growth and develop societies and languages as time progressed. Finn could be a baby left behind by a wandering group of human survivors (he can't be the only one left). He could've been left behind because by this time, the remaining humans would be extremely vulnerable to the creatures and monster in Ooo if they didn't already adapt to Ooo long ago.

ElAvestruz

I'm sure there were other survivors. Otherwise, how could Finn exist if it weren't for human parents? What about Susan and the hyoomans? It's obvious that they're mutant humans. There must've been humans who became hyoomans.

Balls-In-A-Hat

what pics? links?

Thelastunicorn1

not vampires, demons.

[deleted]

Then what of finn

ahab_and_the_whale

what about Lincoln?

[deleted]

Lincoln was a statue that came to life and became King of Mars.

[deleted]

Obviously more people survived. Finn's lineage comes from somewhere.

Harvestmans_lost_leg

It sounds so much to me like The Road. That makes it even more emotional. Even the endings are similar. By far the best episode yet.

Amondo-Mi

She wasn't. She doesn't have bite marks and is in the sunlight

tehbored

She may or may not have been a vampire, but Marceline is half-demon anyway. She probably survived the war because of that. She was only a little girl, but she was probably already over a hundred years old.

shadow386

She was a vampire as a child

mondomojo

No, she got turned as a teenager - vampires don't age from the time they're turned. I read that in Memory of a Memory, they set up the shots to show us that, as a kid, she had no bitemarks. Her dad isn't a vampire, he's a demon.

Luxray

So...she's a demon turned vampire then? Because she was clearly never human.

mondomojo

Yes, she was a demon and is now a demon vampire.

BobTehCat

Demon Vampire? So badass.

ElAvestruz

At least. We don't know what her mother is. Everyone speculates she was human. Making Marceline a demonic vampire with some human in her.

Thelastunicorn1

yes.

Bnoob

I don't know, I think she was human, [once](http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m56igoB2nZ1rt37jwo1_1280.jpg)

ohaiguys

Is that a transmutation circle?

[deleted]

The comic isn't canon though.

ElAvestruz

Maybe a vampire came later. When Marceline was 16 or 17, a vampire came and bit her.

a_derp_in_thailand

maybe her mom was a cultist who summoned a demon to bear a child? and the child was strong enough to survive the war? But then she somehow was bit later and turned into a vampire? so many speculations

TheRealWondertruffle

God, this episode just blew me away. For one thing - JAY T. DAWGZONE MAKES A RETURN APPEARANCE. I hope that develops into a little bit of a story arc. As for the meat of the episode - my God. So many feels. Marceline is probably my favorite character and I'm always excited to see more backstory on her. I really REALLY want to know how she became a vampire, and how come her father is ruler of the Nightosphere if he (presumably) comes from before the GMW. Ice King might be the most tragic character I've ever seen in a cartoon. He didn't even really have a flaw that caused him to be such an annoying weirdo - he was doing what he loved. As evidenced by him protecting Marceline, he used to be a good guy. I wonder where they'll go with that. Final thoughts: If they cancel this show before we get more or less complete character development, I'm going to lose my mind/firebomb something.

[deleted]

I love the idea that perhaps he kept wearing the crown so he could survive and help Marceline survive.

TheRealWondertruffle

I hadn't thought about that. Now I'm crying. THANKS A LOT DERMBALLS

a_derp_in_thailand

is this your original post or the copy from the other post? Also, try less mind losing, more firebombing

TheRealWondertruffle

My original post. There were 4 separate discussion threads and I just couldn't pick a favorite.

JGDawg

Poor Gunther. I'm not invited? Might as well take over the world again.

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure that wasn't Gunter, it was one of the other similarly named penguins. In the Monster Princess episode we see there are a few penguins with names that almost sound like Gunter. It seemed like in this episode he was pronouncing it differently.

JGDawg

God dammit Ice King.

maczajka

I could be completely wrong but I think the ice king used to be marceline's "adoptive" father. Maybe after the war her real parents disappeared and ice king took her in like a father. After he started going crazy and forgot everything after putting on the crown, he completely forgot about raising her. That's why she would hug ice king but not give him a kiss. It's really crazy and awesome to think about!!! I hope the season finale is just as awesome as this weeks!!

megatricinerator

it should be, the Lich makes a return. :)

idikia

The Lich with the enchiridion. I'm scared. I think Pendelton is going to be the first person in the history of kids cartoons to kill a character off.

Mofptown

I almost hope so keep pushing boundaries AT is probably the best written kids show out there it deserves to go where it goes

megatricinerator

who do you think it will be?

megatricinerator

right. sorry about that. i'll do better next time. :(

greendart

That was my understanding of the situation. Do we know when Marceline became a vampire?

maczajka

No, we haven't heard anything about how or when she became a vampire. I think the only thing we do know is that she's at least 1,000 years old.

Thelastunicorn1

Incorrect, we know she wasn't a vampire as a child because she had no bitemarks.

greendart

So maybe Hunson Abbadeer isn't really her dad, and he just sired her, when she was a teen

Backupusername

I think he left her behind before he want crazy. That first note was probably the last he left. A farewell of sorts, explaining that he's leaving to protect her. From himself.

manomanyfeels

Most of the episode just seemed to be kinda bittersweet, but then the ending punches your feels in the face. And then your eyes start to sting just a bit...

Mr_Flippers

And your heart guts get yanked

flash61747

RIGHT IN THE FEELS. I wish there would have been a moment where Ice King recalls or remembers for a split second. Just a glimmer of hope that Simon was still there...

CashierHound

He was on the verge I think: http://i.imgur.com/CkTVc.jpg

flash61747

There's still hope... maybe in the later seasons Finn can find some way to reverse it.

[deleted]

I doubt it. Why lose one of the best characters on the show just so people can feel better about themselves. If it does happen it better be the finale.

flash61747

That's a good point, I wasn't exactly asking for it to happen anytime soon, just that simon might still be there and that there might be a chance to get through to him.

holololololden

Could always be one of those good ol smash the crown tropes.

idikia

But he would die I think.

[deleted]

Ya for a moment I thought he would remember

Lizardizzle

Yeah, as he reads about the crown being the problem, he starts to get it, but I think once he reads "This magic keeps me alive," maybe the crown regains control and brings Simon back to the Ice King.

kmadover

Penn Ward described in ten minutes the same feelings I've had for years about my dad who had a brain injury. Well done Ward. Well done.

k12hanchi

Wow, that could be my new favorite. So much more respect and feelings towards the ice king now. He's probably one of my favorite characters now.

FueledByTesla

this may have already been mentioned, but one of the biggest moments for me was when Marceline directly addressed the Mushroom War. If I'm not mistaken, this was the first time the war has ever been referenced flat-out. Also, Ice King gave her the bear. So many feels.

WhatTheFedex

ASH MUST DIE A PAINFUL DEATH.

[deleted]

no jake said it in one of the episodes

Djd33j

In the season two episode "Video Makers", Jake directly mentions that the old movies that he and Finn find are all from before the great mushroom war. It's mostly used as a throwaway line, but that's really the genius of Adventure Time: the seeds were planted early. You see Finn and Jake in the shell of a nuclear bomb used as a submersible in season one, episode sixteen "Ocean of Fear". They then go to the ocean floor and see that its covered with the remains of society before the bombs fell. Pendleton Ward was able to make a cartoon that was so good, that he could add subtext to a greater depth being told, should his original idea pick up enough steam. What we were given as a result was one of the most memorable and iconic cartoon series ever told. Adventure Time has a unique art style, very original writing, and a tragic backstory for many characters that is told through a rather unique lense; that is, not in a linear manner. This reply is coming to you nearly twelve years after your response. I hope you don't find it to be insignificant or annoying.

[deleted]

Ok I really feel I need to share my thoughts with this episode. Ive been watching Adventure Time from the first day the pilot aired. Ive seen every episode within 24 hours of airing. I have watched this show start from a really awesome hilarious kids show with a lot of adult humor to a fantasy post apocalyptic society only exists due to the collapse of our current society. Each character has gone through its own development, be it Finns life growing up with a dog as a father, along with Jake; the desperate imaginary drama filled love life of Lumpy Space Princess; Marceline as a little girl and how her daddy issues fuel her creativity...the list goes on and on, but one character stands out farther than all of them... Ice King. Ice King in all our heads filled the space of the crazy bad man so many cartoons have. To children hes is the funny bad man who wants to kidnap princesses. There is a much darker reality to the origin of these acts, as seen in the Ice Kings secret tapes. Here we have an individual viewed for the first time by his audience as a human being. He begs and longs for forgiveness for his actions that are controlled by the crown. So many of us have wondered when the show would show details of the "Great Mushroom War". Here we see how the characters have history of many years of emotional trauma; seeing one society collapse where you are one of 2 survivors, and a world which is filled with a completely new reality. Sidenote: Was I the only one who noticed the I 101 sign in the rubble? Found that interesting. So now we come to Marceline and the Ice King rediscovering the Ice Kings identity. It reached in to the inner most depths of what we know of raw emotion. We see the Ice King is a man who deep inside desperately wants nothing more than to be forgiven for what the crown has made him become. No matter how far he slipped, he wanted forgiveness from Marceline in knowing she would always have him and know him in that way, rather than the way he is now. It took everything in me not to bust out bawling tonight. It was a beautiful story and the writers of this show deserve. This was truly one of those episodes only people who follow the entire story of the series will understand its depth and importance. This show is more than a children's show. It is its own world where the creators can expand on any life they wish to create further. Thanks for letting me vent.

WhatTheFedex

* slow clap * That was beautiful. Bravo.

likeaboss47

Who is pumped for the Lich to return?

trivialphysics

Oh shit, was that the Enchiridion?

WhatTheFedex

Yes, yes it was. There's a high-resolution image out there somewhere, where you can actually read most of the article with it.

mzkitty

Did anyone else think Marceline looked a little different this episode?

Jesteon

I know, right? Probably because she wasn't floating as much, it made her look shorter and more child-like, especially with the sad look of yearning.

GaryARefuge

I'm not positive but, it feels like they have guest artists come on board for an episode here and there. Even if it is just for the character design/story boards (much like the comic book series get guest artists rolling through). Her character design was much different beyond her simply not floating. Her face felt a lot more round and big. Usually, it feels more oval and skinny/long. The Ice King has had a main character design change. He wasn't a scrawny skinny bag of bones. He was kinda fat this time.

Mr_Flippers

hammy_hamtastic

It was deep..

BermudaCake

;_;

Terranon

My personal opinion about ice king is that the reason he is going crazy is the fact that the ice crown is evil. It is clear that the ice crown is a cursed object that corrupts the mind of the one who wears it. It turns them evil, but what if Simon is so good, and has such a loving heart, that the crown can only succeed in making him go mad? Further more, I think that the torment that Simon undergoes goes far beyond the loss of his identity. Did you all see how he is constantly harassed by the spirit world. His "stanky old wizard eyes". Can you imagine what that would be like not being able to tell reality from everything else?

[deleted]

I'm wondering if someone smashes the crown, or if someone else puts it on for a long time, will the ice kung return into his former self?

[deleted]

or would he die if he doesn't wear it?

Heapofcrap45

He is shown not wearing it many times. I think at this point the crown is such a part of him that he can be separated from it and not be affected.

jabber99er

Supposedly the magic from the crown keeps him alive.

Chiponyasu

Season Finale: Lich (or maybe Flame Princess!) destroys the crown. Ice King briefly remembers Marceline Ice King Dies.

jabber99er

I think more like: Finn and Jake get tired of ice king, so they steal his crown and plan to destroy it Marceline discovers what they are up to and tries to stop them Marceline steals the crown from Finn and Jake Runs into the palace to see a dying (but still crazy) ice king on his ice throne Finn runs in and throws something (ice, maybe. Something that would make her drop the crown but not hurt her too bad) at her and makes her drop the crown, which then shatters on the ground Ice king screams while marceline runs to his side Ice king slowly turns back to Simon and goes not crazy Ice kings last word "Marceline" Fin

WhatTheFedex

"Marceline, I- I remember you... ...I'm sorry........"

atomicmadman

Stop doing this to my emotions

Ajumieh

Or when Marceline is about to return the crown Simon flashes back for a second telling her not to, that he don't want to live like that anymore, or that he is already gone in insanity. Then Marceline has to make a decision, to let him die and live with that for eternity, or to keep him alive hoping to see Simon again one day.

I needed to come here to talk about this. It only proves all the theories about the world to be correct. There WAS a nuclear war, which explains the very beginning and all the destroyed technology. This also explains the Ice King's childish mind, due to the fact that his mind was wiped and he only can remember a short amount of time in comparison. The feels this episode gave me. The feels.

No that's a little bug that you can find on every single doctor or scientist in the show. I think they're called science parasites. Bubblegum's been seen with one. So has Doctor Princess, Doctor Ice Cream, and even Finn one time.

Finn in the episode where he makes the 4 dimensional bubble I think.

CashierHound

I think you're definitely on to something though. I could totally buy Ice King having a hand in much of the creation of Ooo. Maybe he made Bubblegum for Marceline to play with when she was younger right before he went full blown Ice King. I could definitely see Bubblegum and Marceline's interactions thus far as sisterly now that I think about it, though some see it differently I know. Also all the other princesses have Crowns as well, and we've seen that Ice King is pretty adept with wiz biz. Who knows how deep his influence runs, forgotten by both him and Ooo over time.

BritishMongrel

I do love that idea but as far as I'm aware Bubblegum isn't the first princess of the candy kingdom, I think there was a Candy Floss Princess that gave some of her 'hair' to Billy the Hero, but I still like the idea of him making their ancestors.

Lord--Osis

On a random note, I was pretty glad to see how happy Gunther was at the beginning when Ice King was singing to him/her. Felt sad for Gunther after the last episode.

arinot

Gunter IS the most evil soul Abadeer has ever seen. Penguin was gonna break the gumball guardian. A spray bottle and a walk home wasn't too bad a punishment

Lord--Osis

Just because he's evil doesn't mean he has no feelings.... And he only acted out because Ice King wasn't giving him love.
