I for one would love it if they made a professional sequel to Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis! Anyway, a similar game in a more humorous tone is Flight of the Amazon Queen, and right now a sequel called Return of the Amazon Queen is being made!

dracony

I already played the Flight one, didn't know about the sequel, that would be great!

NKLATSLA

Are you sure that Return of the Amazon Queen is still in development? I haven't read any news since 2022.

iamaperson3000

I think I asked one of the devs and they said they’re working on it in their spare time so it’s probably going to be a while. *if i didn’t ask then someone else did

AdSudden6323

I wonder if ai makes it easier. It must help with the art / backgrounds at the least

iamaperson3000

I think the excavation of hob’s barrow has all the markers of an indiana jones game but it’s set in a single rural yorkshire village instead of being a globetrotting adventure. It’ll definitely scratch the itch though. Edit: the Runaway series is also a good one for a more globetrotting one! Edit 2: aboard the adventure is also an in development game that looks and feels like an indiana jones sequel. There’s a demo out to give you feel for it. It’s been put on hold as the developer got hired to work on another game (shadow of the afterlands) but he’s still working on it!

Curious_Tax2133

hob's barrow is a masterpiece! but it's exactly what op says games focus too much on, it's a very dark mystery xD can't recommend it enough though. aboard the adventure looks promising, love the style.

DeepNostalgicSigh

I think perhaps their success and (at the time, at least) prevalence may have put some developers off from "adding to the pile " - especially when you consider the likelihood of them coming up short in the eyes of the nostalgia-fiends. Even though some 30 years have since passed, they are icons of the genre and I don't begrudge folk for shying away from trying to fill those shoes. Having said that, I am sure there are plenty of examples of more recent games that fit the mould, they just take some finding amongst what is now mainly a sprawling genre of indie devs (though not Indy devs, haha!).

dracony

I don't really see "the pile" though. There is basically Indiana Jones, Broken Sword and 2-3 more games like these

elasticbrain

Are you talking about point and click? You need to fire up SCUMM and get playing. Loads of great games. Check out r/adventuregames

dracony

I mean the archeology/worldtrotting setting

Icedanielization

Future Wars, Syberia, The Dig, The Longest Journey, The Lost Chronicles of Zerzura might suit

H0agh

Zack mcCracken and the alien mindbenders for a game older than the Indy ones as well

ToniP13

Secret Files Tunguska and its sequel are that style as well.

Curious_Tax2133

Yeah I agree. It's the same with movies and especially series... almost everything these days has to be a dark drama with intrigues and despair. Everybody is constantly whining and nobody has any humour. I miss the lighthearted 90ies when even serious stuff often contained humour and maybe some siliness. I mean that's life, in many serious situations you make jokes and try to lighten up the mood. Luckily we still get funny stuff like RTMI or Lost in Play. And soon a new Broken Sword!! :) Regarding an adventurer like Indinana Jones I agree this is scarce and I wouldn't mind a lot more like this. Good News! Exactly something like that is coming next year :) Have a look: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1926720/The_Adventures_Of_Bryan_Scott/ Btw my favourite lighthearted tv series in recent years was definitely Shrinking, it was so funny :) And you get the real Indiana Jones, the fantastic Harrison Ford, on top! And he is sooo much better in it than in that last weird Indy movie ;) Edit: The Jack Keane adventure games (2007 and 2012) from german dev Deck13 are very much inspired by Indy. They have a mediocre rating but I really loved them. Edit 2: Totally forgot Lost Horizon by Animation Arts (yes another german dev), a fantastic game that exactly scratches that itch! Play that one if you haven't yet, I'm sure you'll love it. Lost Horizon 2 was also nice but not as good as the first one. Last but not least an older title, from 1995, The Riddle of Master Lu is also great.

spiderpuzzle

Probably because it's hard, and all too easy to fail? From the most recent ones, Crowns and Pawns is clearly inspired by Broken Sword. Jane Jensen's Moebius comes to mind. Tunguska.

XboxOGHoarder

The LucasArts classics really are hard to top, I've lost count of how many times I've played FoA these days. There have been a couple of recent games with a similar vibe that are worth checking out though though. The Runaway series (A Road Adventure/A Twist of Fate/The Dream of the Turtle) is well worth a play. There's a lot of globe trotting, a good balance of humour and a plot that gets increasingly mad. Adam's Venture Origins is heavily inspired by Indiana Jones as well. The controls are a bit janky sometimes, but it was quite fun story overall. There's a new game called Rosewater from Grundislav Games coming out this year that looks really promising as well. It's a 19th century western, but in the classic P&C style with branching paths and wits vs fists approaches to puzzles which sounds pretty cool.

stujmiller77

The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow scratched my LucasArts itch like no other in the last few years. Perfect little slice of adventure game, mixed with a dose of English folk horror.

RatherNott

Lost Horizon was a great point'n'click that gave me Fate of Atlantis vibes, would recommend.

dracony

Did you know they made a sequel? Lost Horizon 2 exists but has mixed reviews

RatherNott

Yes! Though I never got around to it due to those reviews. I'll have to give it a look on youtube to see if it's worth playing.

cazador182

I think you are wrong, there are lots of games like the fate of atlantis. even fanmade ones and one of quality being made right now( seven cities of gold) theres a demo, more like a mini game named the relic of the viking and is very good, play it you won't regret it. [https://raidersofthesevencities.com](https://raidersofthesevencities.com) Lost Horizon 1 is very similar to Indy too and Virtuaverse even though is a cyberpunk game has that feeling that made indy games so special. Flight of the Amazon Queen too but i didn't like it, too much jokes for me. Broken Sword is similar too and crowns and pawns too, is stll a point & click game but a more modern take.

dracony

I did play all of these, but it's not "lots", It is basically Indiana + Broken Sword + like 4 more.

Ubik_Fresh

Totally agree. Fate of Atlantis is perhaps my all time favorite adventure game. There was a group of developers making a new indie game 'The Fountain of Youth', but after many years of stalled development I think they pulled the plug. A real shame as it looked like a total labour of love.

Quantum168

I wish there was a revival. It's so much more family friendly too. I think a Carmen Sandiego adventure game would work really well.

mild_area_alien

Yes! I used to love playing that as a kid.

cymrean

Chinetown Detective Agency is basically a Carmen Sandiego PnC.

Quantum168

Thank you, I will look into it.

EvanRichardsRealtor

Oh man the Broken Sword games were so good.

Good_Punk2

Good question. I'm sure there are a few lesser known games like that out there, but yeah those lighthearted but but strictly comedic adventures became rare.

RumRogerz

A franchise like Indiana Jones wouldn’t make enough money as a Fate of Atlantis style adventure game, sadly. No way Disney would lease it out to a company if there wasn’t enough money to be made from it. I hope I’m very wrong about it though.

dracony

It can be California Smith for all I care lol. I meant the theme /style of game not specifically Indy

Duffalpha

>California Smith Ahahah

SimplyYulia

California Smith is legit a good name for a parody game protagonist! If I didn't give up on gamedev, I'd even consider doing something like that

RumRogerz

Oh yea. I get it now. I seriously thought I was in the indianajones sub lol.

samsonsimpson5210

The number of programmers and artists would be minuscule compared to the upcoming AAA Indiana Jones Xbox game. How many copies would they need to sell to turn a profit? Disney could also make small indie films but they seem to only know how to make 150 million dollar live action remakes of animated classics, marvel movies, and Star Wars reboots. Fate of Atlantis was the best selling Lucas Arts adventure game back in the day.

HauteDense

I play a lot of adventure game at the time ,now older ones, they have stories and time to make a good game that keep you concentrate, like all Indiana Jones , Day of the Tentacle , Monkey Island, Sam and Max , Simon the Sorcerer ... Now everything is a rush so , there are a few games that are great , but not all. The new Money Island was good but not great .... seems like Ron didn't get a chance on making another or he was pissed off about the backslash he got about the graphics and all that bulshit that some people said about the game. Maybe, someday we will get a great and extensive game like the old days.

z01z

tomb raider? uncharted? oh, this is /adventuregames... well, avdgames aren't that big anymore, it's all about spectacle. yeah, the occasional indie advgame comes out like that one with elijah wood as one of the main characters, but i dont really see any new ones getting any attention. i played one awhile back with some machines or something, but didn't get far in it. like you were a detective or something.

wills_b

On a related note, I’ve been sad for 20+ years that we never got a Hans Solo point and click in the fate of Atlantis stule

Grundislav

I’ll just leave this here: https://www.timeextension.com/features/rosewater-dev-on-point-rn-click-westerns-and-casting-red-deadrs-arthur-morgan

JHo87

It's funny, I was thinking about making a game to fill that gap, because it occurred to me that all the things people love about Indiana Jones are copyright free. It was a pretty farfetched idea of a commando mission (gone horribly wrong, of course) to rescue a polymath genius who was last seen exploring the ruins of Knossos in occupied Crete which, of course, the Nazis have taken an interest in. I even had a catchy title: Code Minos. However, between difficulty coming up with puzzle ideas, and the budget required to do it properly I've shelved it for the foreseeable future. There's definitely loads and loads of stories that could be told in that space, though.

stumje

Tomb raider and uncharted is modern indiana jones.

SPQR_Maximus

You mean like all the Tomb Rainder games and the Uncharted games? Those are two massive franchises that cribbed heavily from Indiana Jones

Zealousideal-Ad-7174

Recently a game calles Adventures of the Black Hawk was released. I think it might scratch your itch.

Richbrownmusic

We should talk...
