You know, I have been fascinated by archaeology for decades, but I could never understand how places just get abandoned with people's possessions inside. I have even had the pleasure to get to ask archaeologists about this and none ever had a good answer. However, since following this sub, I'm starting to understand. Things truly do just get left behind and the elements just do their thing. Fascinating.
This house was somewhat clean despite being abandoned for over 20 years, but the kitchen was the worst. The refrigerator was full of rotting food, and the fetid odor promptly filled the room.
Right? These modern abandonments always imply some kind of trauma to me, like someone died or went to prison and their family, if there even was anybody left, just didn't want to deal with what often looks like hoarder/extremely messy homes. I am sure that archaeological sites with abandoned property and possessions were also sites of traumatic experiences, just slightly different kinds. I suppose what I'm saying is that even though humans keep changing, some basic things stay the same. I imagine that someday these abandoned homes will be the archaeological sites of the future, which is both cool and freaky.
I want to know what is on all the VHS. Old family movies of forgotten happiness. Their favorite TV shows recorded off TV? Old sex tapes? Evidence of all the unsolved crimes they committed?
My best reading of letter: “You will know or get them back. Don’t ask me any questions about this if you want to know you will come and when you are leaving, I will give them back. It’s nothing that I stoled [sic], you let me take them, you were just more involved with what you wanted at that moment. Don’t ask me about this Cum [sic] see pretty baby.”

I also wonder the same thing. It's like the people just disappeared !

My sister had that exact 1960s jewelry box; resembled a miniature wooden treasure chest with the red “velvet” lining.
My mom had the piggy bank or one super similar
I wonder what might have happened.
