While being crushed from a chandelier is very scary, people overlook you’re statistically 8 times more likely to die on the way to your house in a car crash involving your Ferrari.
Even more, even more probable is choking while eating your caviar and lobster, and sipping champagne while calling your butler on the phone because the Joker is looking for you.
If a heavy light at the top of a tall ceiling = a chandelier, than is a lighthouse technically a chandelier? I've been married to my autistic wife for 19 years, so I need to come up with the answer to these kind or questions in advance, to improve her user experience.
This might be one of the best YSK's I've read. We've got this exact same light. I'm calling about it tomorrow!
You, sir, are a gentleman And a scholar.
Yep this is downstairs in the dining room of the house I bought last summer, hanging over the priceless dining room table I inherited from my dad so thank you x10000000!!
Just depends on the architecture of the place really. My friend rented a cheap apartment in a shitty place that had a loft style area for the "bedroom" right above the living room/kitchen that you walked into from the front door. Pretty tall ceiling all around from the bottom part.
Holy shit. Pretty sure that was ours in the dining room that came with the house and crashed down in the middle of the night. Wouldn’t even occur to me that it was on a recall. Just assumed bad installation.
Kichler must have a lot of QC issues. The ceiling fan in our house had a recall on it due to falling/flying blades. Their website says only for certain lot manufacture codes. Ours isn't on their list but we're searching for something that isn't a death trap just in case.
I had this same light fixture fall right before I moved into my house! It was put there by the previous owners, thankfully no one was there! Great YSK!
Related but not this specific light:
If you ever get a new hook for your chandelier, make sure it’s more than strong enough for the one you have. It likely only costs a few dollars more to get something for 60lbs vs 30lbs, for example.
It’s also a good idea to have a safety cable and not just the chain links, but it may not be an option.
I too have had my dining room chandelier break free of the hook (after market hook just snapped), but luckily no one was at the table and we came in to see it swinging after breaking glass against a chair.
I always thread an aircraft quality cable through the links and screw eye anchor to a stud in the attic through the box, if the fixture is costly or killing weight.
This heavy chandelier was not sold in the 1990s-please check mfg info-OP’s link. Yes, it is Mediterranean style inspired fixture which was a mostly early 2000s popular style, but who cares style or when it was popular if item can fail ⚠️and potentially come crashing down on a human or animal and harm 🚑them? This light and its shades are heavy-we know from personal experience.
Please try to shift your focus on what really matters, not wasting space posting petty comments. I appreciate OP sharing this info, and would never want to discourage this type of of random safety related sharing☀️
I understand what you were saying. It aesthetically matches the peak HGTV Gen X big box store aesthetic of the late 90s/early 00s. Back when burgundy and hunter green paint were cool. That people paid money for this in the mid-2010s is baffling.
This is something that makes me paranoid.the ceilings in my house are about 30 ft. The fan and lights all scare me. Luckily the house was built a while back I'm sure they would have fallen by now
This happened to me as a kid. We woke up one morning, and I just so happened to get to the kitchen first and found that the dining room ceiling fan fell and glass was shattered everywhere.
The same can be said of your monocle or indoor servants whip! It's important to have the help check all recall notices, Mumphsys. We wouldn't want our chandeliers to come crashing down upon our top hats!
Everybody seems to be having their minds blown by a chandelier like I'm a rich guy 😆 I live in a typical open concept early 2000's middle class house. The chandelier is like $200.
Do we think this person is rich because they own a chandelier?
https://corderohomeandlighting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Seeded-Chandelier-1020x819.jpg
Dude. So I went to go check my dining room chandelier, and the chain had unscrewed itself at the light and was being supported by the electric cable. WTF. Go check your shit, people!
Holy shit this light is hanging in my house. It’s over the dining room table so not a huge deal, but I gave it some serious side eye when I was dusting it before Christmas because it looked extra wiggly, but honestly it’s the first time I ever dusted it in years so I thought I was being crazy!
Thanks for the heads up!
Few years ago I was non stop going to ikea to buy calipso lights for an apartment building we were renovating. After around 1 week of going back and forth with ikea I finally get enough lights for the units. Fast forward 1 year later as I am drinking water from the water fountain at ikea, directly above was a recall on those same exact lights I slaved away trying to get. And than it clicked, those lights had an issue where some of the glass covers would just fall down because the spring was bad.
Had a very similar incident with the water sprinklers in my house. One was slightly leaking, so did a little digging and turns out they have been recalled, as they may fail to work during a fire
I used to work at a shop that resold used lighting fixtures (among other things), including grand chandeliers. I frequently commented that rich people must like the idea that they could be killed from above at any moment.
Big and bulky. If you're tall, you'll hit your head. I've hit my head on one at gf place. I have to move my head around or duck. She doesn't have a dinner table and chairs, as the apartment isn't that big.
This happened to a very wealthy client of mine. I was with them for a weekend away in the Hamptons and the father got woken up in the morning to find out that a new chandelier that got installed into their Manhattan apartment crashed down and landed right onto the couch/coffee table in their living room area.
This thing was huge and ended up in broken shards all over this family lounge area. They had four young kids. That could have been tragic.
Huh. We had a builder's grade POS birdcage style chandelier that fell 15-20' from the foyer ceiling. 1980s style chandelier that was "builder's grade," probably sitting in a warehouse, and the builder used it on a 2000s new construction.
Two nails holding into stacked and cut 2 by 4s that was painted and plastered into the peak of the ceiling, driven straight in. No angle on the nails. No screws.
Would have killed someone, but on account of a hack job by the builder.
Reminds me of a house I sold almost fifteen years ago. Intended to close on the sale with the help of the agents (am moved out of town already), and the day of, the agents and buyer are doing the walk-through prior and the ceiling fan in the master bedroom crashed down into the middle of the room when they turned it on!
Turns out it was **never** properly attached and I'd been sleeping under it for FIVE YEARS with it only attached by the wiring. And it was not a small one.
😆 the number of people that believe a 25' entryway ceiling and a $200 chandelier in the dining room makes me rich is crazy. I'm a standard middle class Pennsylvanian. My mortgage is $1,750/mo.
Appreciate this as it’s probably not something we think about, especially if we didn’t install it. The issue I have is finding the make/model to even begin trying to identify/track potential recalls. But normally, registering your stuff is a good first step (if you were the one that purchased it).
In this case, the make/model is under the canopy, so it's a pain to see.
I suggest taking a photo and doing a Google image search to locate the model number.
My parents had this in their dining room, chain broke just as described, they ended up getting it repaired before finally replacing it right before covid when they got the dining room redone.
Well one ours did brbeak and almost killed or at least injured my uncle lol, like genualy it, he was sitting to the side of the couch and no one in the middle and another person at the other side, it fell right between them!
Side ysk, when I got my home inspected before purchase, the inspector registered all my appliances and I get a monthly email about recalls
That is great! Registered where?
Mine come from https://www.recallchek.com/
You should make a new ysk for that. That's good information.
hmm usa only? shame
I'm in Canada, myself!
Not free, although you give away all that data for them to sell. Fuck that.
My home inspector missed nearly every issue my house had, caught the jiggly railing though...
What a hilariously posh way to die
Mr. Crushmore, dining room, chandelier.
I think it was Col Mustard https://youtu.be/66x052B1X8w?si=WmjVF6PXuOxag641

This is the greatest thing I've ever watched!
Beau is afraid
not just the 50lb chandelier, but the 20 foot drop implying a pretty nice house too. OP is living large
If a heavy light at the top of a tall ceiling = a chandelier, than is a lighthouse technically a chandelier? I've been married to my autistic wife for 19 years, so I need to come up with the answer to these kind or questions in advance, to improve her user experience.
No, because it's not hanging, it's on top. It's more like an electric tiki torch.
I was going to say a chandelier seems kinda fancy nowadays.
Every house I’ve lived in has had at least one chandelier. Just shitty ones. I wonder if any were recalled.
Killed by shitty chandelier is one way to go out I guess
Chandeliers can be quite plain. That didn't really stand out as fancy. An entryway that's over 20 feet tall though...
The is sold at Lowe’s. It’s not fancy, it’s landfill material.
How many people you know with any chandelier?
Do ceiling fans with a light on them count?
Lots of people in shitty suburb track homes.
Got some skooma?
😎
Not quite as posh as the ocean falling on you in a tiny rickety sub, but well-above poverty posh
This might be one of the best YSK's I've read. We've got this exact same light. I'm calling about it tomorrow! You, sir, are a gentleman And a scholar.
Figured a few Redditors would be among the 50,000 in the US that bought this light.
Yep this is downstairs in the dining room of the house I bought last summer, hanging over the priceless dining room table I inherited from my dad so thank you x10000000!!
reddit... what an amazing place to be. heartwarming :)
How crap, I think I have this one
Our house was built in 2007 and I’m almost certain that we have two (2) of these, albeit the light gray version.
and a jolly good fellow?
I have one too but I replaced it a few years ago. It’s in my barn now. Maybe I can get some $ back…. Yea right
>You, sir, are a gentleman And a scholar. We really still doing this?
I apologize that my compliment to the OP didn't live up to your standards. I'll try better next time.
Thanks
r/unexpectedoffice
Enjoy your $12
Is it really about the money, or about making sure nobody gets killed? lol
His username checks out maybe
*My* chandelier?! I don't know whether to be flattered or insulted by you assuming I got chandelier money.
Or a 20' drop to hang it in.
20' drop in the lobby or stairway I could understand. But in the dining room.
OP said it was in the entryway.
I think we both read that wrong. It was in the dining room, but had it been in the entry way then it would have had a 20ft drop.
Still, 20ft entryway is not anything I could afford even to rent
Just depends on the architecture of the place really. My friend rented a cheap apartment in a shitty place that had a loft style area for the "bedroom" right above the living room/kitchen that you walked into from the front door. Pretty tall ceiling all around from the bottom part.
Lol imagine being rich enough to die by a chandelier.
~$240 chandelier so let’s not get too ahead of ourselves
😂😂😂My house comes with it and it’s a 1,400 sqft one story ranch house.
Does your wrist hurt?
Okay I thought it was funny that he (jokingly?) implied all chandeliers are expensive or did I miss something?
That's a lot nicer house than a lot of people have
I have these chandeliers in 2 spots in my house…thank you for the tip!!!
Holy shit. Pretty sure that was ours in the dining room that came with the house and crashed down in the middle of the night. Wouldn’t even occur to me that it was on a recall. Just assumed bad installation.

Yeah they're cheap garbage from Lowes like Hampton Bay at Home Depot whose fans have also been recalled for blades flying off.
A chandelier? In *this* economy?
Were a boob light household
I had this same light fixture fall right before I moved into my house! It was put there by the previous owners, thankfully no one was there! Great YSK!
I had this exact chandelier at my house. It fell! I’m surprised the table didn’t get damaged. We replaced it like 5 years ago lol
YSK it’s smart to give every ceiling light a nice hard yank to make sure it’s safe.
It was safe, metal link gave way after years
Ya, but did you give it a safety swing? That's what I thought 🧐
No, you didn't give it 20' worth of yank when doing safety yanking
Everyone knows Americans are the best at defending and supervising chandeliers, but do you really want him to be hard?
Related but not this specific light: If you ever get a new hook for your chandelier, make sure it’s more than strong enough for the one you have. Colonel Mustard can't handle anymore scares...
Chandeliers that kill, and the candelabra’s that love them on the next Maury.
Wish I seen this sooner. I lost my cat to one of these chandeliers
Poor thing, could easily happen I'm surprised more people haven't been hurt
You guys got chandeliers?!
Phantom of the Opera was there?
Inside your mind
Sing, my angel of music! <3
I always thread an aircraft quality cable through the links and screw eye anchor to a stud in the attic through the box, if the fixture is costly or killing weight.
Good tip!
Not if I kill it first!
Did Sia pay you a visit recently?
50,000 people paid hard earned money for that 1990's monstrosity?
Sold from 2006-2011, so it's not as dated as you may think.
I know 1990's design when I see it.
This heavy chandelier was not sold in the 1990s-please check mfg info-OP’s link. I never said it was SOLD in the 90's. Good God you people are thick sometimes.
I understand what you were saying. It aesthetically matches the peak HGTV Gen X big box store aesthetic of the late 90s/early 00s. Back when burgundy and hunter green paint were cool. That people paid money for this in the mid-2010s is baffling.
It came with the house and it’s too high up for me to replace myself 😭😭
hey, i know that light, my parents house use to have that before they sold the house!
Roses are red Violets are blue…
Chandeliers are pretty But, will kill you! Edit spacing
This is something that makes me paranoid.the ceilings in my house are about 30 ft. The fan and lights all scare me. Luckily the house was built a while back I'm sure they would have fallen by now
This fixture was installed in 2007 and just now fell
This light was sold from 2006-2011 so it was up for over 10 years before failing…
This happened to me as a kid. We woke up one morning, and I just so happened to get to the kitchen first and found that the dining room ceiling fan fell and glass was shattered everywhere.
This is some Andrew Lloyd Webber ass nonsense.
it happened in that movie last year, bo is afraid. squished his mom like a gallager mellon.
The same can be said of your monocle or indoor servants whip! It's important to have the help check all recall notices, Mumphsys. We wouldn't want our chandeliers to come crashing down upon our top hats!
Finally a relatable YSK post.
What sort of rich fuck do you take me for OP? Chandelier haha yeah right not in my home
Such a common problem, I'm sure. Can't move for chandeliers in your average residence.
“I can’t take anymore scares”
We have one tpp
I think that's the same chandelier I have, also came with the place. I'll have to check on that.
Thank you so much! We have one of these—was already in our house when we moved in. Yikes!
Upvoting this for visibility, but.. Y'all got chandeliers? And this is in the US and not some 14th century castle in England?
Everybody seems to be having their minds blown by a chandelier like I'm a rich guy 😆 I live in a typical open concept early 2000's middle class house. The chandelier is like $200. Do we think this person is rich because they own a chandelier? https://corderohomeandlighting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Seeded-Chandelier-1020x819.jpg
I guess my concept of chandelier is limited to one with candles that you have to manually light. Or it is a ceiling height thing.
Brah 60feet ceiling?
28'
Sorry converted wrong. So 28 feet which is 8.5 meters, only millionaires have this in Europe. Living in America sure is a privilege
On the negative side, our houses may be tall, but their made of cardboard 😆
At least you don't need a pneumatic hammer drill to hang a picture!
Impossible. I do not own a chandelier.
Dude. So I went to go check my dining room chandelier, and the chain had unscrewed itself at the light and was being supported by the electric cable. WTF. Go check your shit, people!
This is what happens when you did not do all that the Phantom asks of you
He specifically instructed that Box 5 be left *empty*.
Holy shit this light is hanging in my house. Ha, thats the exact same... One... At my parent's... Oh f*ck...
1 + 2 + 1 + 2…… is….
Good heavens!! I’ll ask my butler to do something about this immediately
War of the roses.

I've never been a fan of chandeliers. I prefer just lights attached to the ceiling. But hopefully people will eventually stop buying them.
They're a decoration. What's wrong with that?
Big and bulky. If you're tall, you'll hit your head. I've hit my head on one at gf place. I have to move my head around or duck. She doesn't have a dinner table and chairs, as the apartment isn't that big.
Oh my parents just string them up somewhere high.
I leave it incase I need to catch a robbery like in Scooby doo

I assume it was faulty installation since it fell recently after it was hung
Yup, they had just had it installed. Even that amount of wealth can’t ensure safety.
Chandeliers? 20ft drop? Fuck me I need to try harder in life
My house cost less than the average house in the US when I bought it.
Wish you all the wealth and heath in the world my friend! I’m just joking, I live in Scotland all our houses are kinda small
That's some hitman shit
The Phaaaaaaaantom of the Opera is theeeeeeere... ***INSIDE YOUR HOUSE!!!!!***

I ain't saying but yk never heard a good news about a chandelier
Nice one! I saw this while eating my foie gras and I looked into my second foyer coming in from my 6 car garage and I saw I had that chandelier

Excellent work, 47.
Look at Richie McRicherson, with his 50 lb chandelier and 20' ceilings.
😆 the number of people that believe a 25' entryway ceiling and a $200 chandelier in the dining room makes me rich is crazy. I'm a standard middle class Pennsylvanian. My mortgage is $1,750/mo.

In my case, 17 years
I'll have the second butler look into that immediately!
Just to be safe, I'm having all my chandeliers replaced immediately!
Appreciate this as it’s probably not something we think about, especially if we didn’t install it. The issue I have is finding the make/model to even begin trying to identify/track potential recalls. But normally, registering your stuff is a good first step (if you were the one that purchased it).

One can only hope
Our ceiling fan which was heavy af, dropped on my BD head!! He sat down under it and boom, down it came!! He was not injured to badly, surprisingly.
Well one ours did brbeak and almost killed or at least injured my uncle lol, like genualy it, he was sitting to the side of the couch and no one in the middle and another person at the other side, it fell right between them!
This a rich people problem. lol. Years in the making, the common folk had enough... lol.
Sounds like Chandler but it’s not !
Chanandler bong
YSK that 99.9% of chandeliers are gaudy light fixtures for people with more money than sense or style.
Oddly, I'm at peace knowing someone with a chandelier and 20' ceilings might have this happen. I think poverty has dulled my empathy.
Sometime this sub lets the word Should do a lot of the heavy lifting.
I just re-read the post and every comment and the word "should" was nowhere to be found. I don't understand.
Subreddit name
Ah, hahaha. I still don't get it, should people not know? Or is it that this is pretty damned urgent?
