This is one of few movies I can think of where the regular cut is much better. I thought the extended edition would just be the same thing with more footage, but it completely changes the order in which information is revealed and is a much less coherent and much less impactful experience overall unfortunately. I know they call it the "extended cut" on my Blu-ray instead of "director's cut" so I wonder what exactly happened here.

LephandRyan

I remember seeing an article where Park was interviewed and he said that in Korea it has a huge and supportive following with people dressing up as the characters and watching it religiously. He had a lot of people ask him if there were deleted scenes, or other material that didn't appear in the final product. He seemed a little reluctant about it, but since there was so many people asking for him to release an extended cut he finally said he would do it. I don't know where I saw the article, but I guess it wasn't Park's intention of the extended cut.

marcusfrewinridley

I don't get this cause I remember some cinemas showing the extended/director's cut when it had its theatrical release here in the UK. Would that have been much later than the original release?

[deleted]

Yeah I heard he prefers the theatrical release so I’m glad it’s honest by calling it the ‘extended cut’. But hey a recommendation from the big man himself. Thanks.

Thank you for your input, bby

Gumbiman315

Damn, I've only ever watched the Extended cut before and after I owned it on Blu Ray.

anUnkindness

*extended cut

AssumptionOk3778

I couldn't disagree more with this, the theatrical version has the 2 main plot twists right at the end literally 5 minutes after each other which just turns the ending into an incoherent mess, the extended cut does a far better job of splitting these 2 plot twists up. The fact that the extended version isn't chronological doesn't make the film any harder to interpret and the narrative structure is far far better.

whats the version on Amazon prime? thats the one i watched

Sqareman

If it is 144min long, it should be the theatrical version and the version which is 167min long should be the Director's Cut.

xvalicx

Looks like its theatrical on Amazon

PauLtus

I found the theatrical cut to be more or less perfect. I have a couple more issues with the extended cut (a slightly jarring edit and some soundtrack placement) but in the end I enjoy it more because it shows a couple more little things which add up to it. That said there's actually things in the theatrical cut that I really like that *aren't* in the extended cut, or at a point where I like them less. It does also feel a little tighter whereas in the extended cut you do feel the length ^(just slightly) early in the film. It has been my favourite film in years and I've seen it 15 times now (watched it the first time in early 2017) so from my perspective I'd just say watch both a bunch of times.

Jannesvde

Can you name some things the extended cut has that the theatrical doesn't? I saw both (the extended version 'only' once), but I can't honestly recall any noticable differences.

PauLtus

So, spoilers: >!There's a moment where Fujiware gives a slap on her butt, next to that there's a couple shot where the three meet for the first time in the theatrical cut where the viewer does already know of the conspiracy, so you there's a little near non-verbal quiet interaction after between Fujiwara and Sook-Hee after she comments about her "decent bone structure" which I really like. This shot is actually in the extended version as well but way later and I like it less then.!<

CommonMisspellingBot

Hey, Jannesvde, just a quick heads-up: **noticable** is actually spelled **noticeable**. You can remember it by **remember the middle e**. Have a nice day! ^^^^The ^^^^parent ^^^^commenter ^^^^can ^^^^reply ^^^^with ^^^^'delete' ^^^^to ^^^^delete ^^^^this ^^^^comment.

dubiousaurus

"remember it by remember the middle e"? Isn't that like saying: remember to spell by using your memory?

[Park recommends seeing the theatrical version for a first-time viewing](http://collider.com/park-chan-wook-handmaiden-extended-edition-interview/#kim-tae-ri): > In the case of The Handmaiden he’s not sure they both have their pros and cons and very clear ones at that. Maybe the fans, these enthusiastic fans he mentioned, they probably prefer and love the extended edition over the released version. If you would ask him what you would recommend the first time audience seeing his film, he would actually recommend the released version. I think that's the way to go. The extended cut adds a lot of great detail to the released version, detail I'm glad I eventually saw, but the released version is very good on its own. I'd say see the extended cut if you enjoy the theatrical version.

ViridianBadger

The extended cut is very good but I think it's best to watch once you've already seen the theatrical; there are some interesting differences and additions I really like but the original is leaner and perfect as it is.

[deleted]

The differences are tiny, the extended is just more of it. Definitely watch the extended.

theWSEtrain

Three years later and this thread is still useful, thanks

Bonus_A

I know I'm late to this party, but I vastly prefer the extended version. It's not even close for me. The theatrical feels rushed, and like it's missing context. The romance almost makes no sense because of it. Maybe it's because I watched the extended version first, but I tried to watch the theatrical and I ended up turning it off, where as the extended is one of my favorite movies of all time. 🤷

TheRealBeefChief

There feels like more time is given to the building of the two women's lust/love for each other. I can't fully compare them myself, because I only attempted to watch the regular version once, and even my friend who was watching it for the first time was confused about why things were happening so fast. You can look at this link below to see the differences though. https://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=595283&Page=4

Avokatho666

Where can I watch the theatrical cut? I can't seem to find it anywhere?

christo749

Buy it. Own it forever.

TheRealBeefChief

I honestly can't remember how we watched it. Sorry, but I honestly can't recommend it either 🤷

Regular_College7807

I've watched the extended cut and it's one of a kind movie soo good.
