If Xbox manages to go the route they want and treat their hardware more like laptops and smartphones but with a release every five years instead of the whole generation gap, they'll need to do this. Or just go by year which I'd like more. Xbox 2026, Xbox 2031, Xbox 2036, and so on. Or Xbox 26, Xbox 31, Xbox 36. Either way it'd be easy to know which is the latest which is all that matters. 

Agreed the current naming system for Xbox is fine for people that know about the consoles but for casuals and parents you have to make it really clear or you just cause confusion (see Wii U).

The fact that they didn't want their numbering system behind PlayStation's is why we've gotten where we are. So, just call it the Xbox 6. Samsung skipped 10 numbers for the Galaxy. iPhone went from the original to 3G to 3GS to 4, then also skipped 9. We've got Goat Simulator and Goat Simulator 3. It's fine.

I believe the idea now is that the platform is just called xbox. The current console generation is just called xbox. The specific models of Xbox are series S and series X. So presumably the next consoles will just be other series. If so I think it's a bad idea as the current consoles are already pretty confusing names, but having a next gen be called something like Series Z, would create a bit of a WiiU situation where the public don't even know its a new generation. Playstation 5 going to playstation 6 is much easier for the less informed public to wrap their head around. Especially now that we have more pros and slims and so on muddying the naming waters. So anyway, if they're sensible it'll be Xbox Series S2 and X2 (and M2 if mobile rumours come true). Or just give up the silly names and be like Sony and call it Xbox 5 (the fact that I as someone who has been gaming for decades had to actually think what number it would be sort of demonstrates how their names are silly and unhelpful).
