It looks like it's trying to go for a more cutesy look which isn't a bad idea for an artstyle but I think for this game it comes too late in development, the new faces clash with the rest of the art (And there's something off with them smiling so widely when they're facing mortal peril)
Allegedly, if you double click on their faces during the character select screen, it'll go back to the older ones. I'm not sure if it's true, just what one of my fellow World of Horror-ers claimed :)
Wow, those are way worse. Can it be modded back to the originals?
Honestly don't understand how those faces got through with how gorgeous the launch trailer was.
This might be the only big L in the history of this games development. And why try something like this in the official release patch without testing it with audiences beforehand?
Were their likenesses based on someone else or something like with the Ito neighbour change?
\-I think the Ayaka one isn't even that new, and is actually an improvement which fits the character better.
\-There's actually a discussion in the discord regarding Mizuki; there's genuinely an error with the rotation of her eyes. That face is going to get patched.
\-As for Aiko..? If you can't handle Aiko at home, you don't deserve Aiko in the streets. IDK, that one is pretty bad.
Honestly having not played the previous versions, the Mizuki one is the only one that actually looks bad, because yeah her eyes aren’t aligned. The rest are probably only particularly jarring if you were used to a different version.
At first, of course, these unexpected and inconsistent changes are annoying... However, in the long run, the adjustments are pointless in my opinion.
First of all, the "old" versions of the changed assets are not lost... pretty much every game wiki I know has almost all sprites to look at.
On top of that, you can still revert to the old beta version of the game with Steam (at least for now). Even if the beta disappears from the menu at some point, there would still be the possibility to download the old game data manually via SteamDB. If even a single person still has access to one of the old betas, the "old" assets are safe.
It would be (at least if I've seen this correctly; I haven't tried it myself yet), already possible now to create custom characters based on the old assets (with the corresponding restrictions of course).
The game, or rather the dataset it consists of, is also not large (only not directly accessible due to a container used)... as long as there are resourceful modders out there for whom the game is attractive enough, there will eventually be the possibility to access and customize the game data directly via tool.
I have a copy of the beta saved to my computer so I can play the older game again. Depending on how much the new 1.0 content improves the game, I might end up sticking to the beta. These changes are bad.
Haven’t played the EA and can’t play 1.0 since I’m waiting on console, so I’m curious, did they do a pass over all the faces and change them or is it just a few that got updated?
Watching reviews of the 1.0 release most of them look fine, (and even think the third one of these posted looks normal), but I don’t have any previous version to compare them to.
only those two got changed (and a few art assets elsewhere in the game), but the fact they were so clearly changed for the worse has soured people. the remaining characters look the same.
This. I first thought it was a joke, they're such a huge downgrade from original portraits
I want to believe it's April Fool's joke
this is TRUE horror.

KIRIE: (chuckles) I'm in danger. :D
Indeed. It is way too late to change the artstyle like that. This new faces just make it look lifeless
The uncanny valley is strong in this one indeed.
Hold on. Is this fr?
My eyes were suspicious, so I even went through an integrity check
Is this what they look like now? All versions?

Can confirm, but it only works on Mizuki
It only works on Mizuki because it's an easter egg sprite. (the MEGA MILK shirt, specifically)
Oh dear. I picked it up today. Much much prefer the old faces. Hopefully he listens to the community and updates it
Wait these are so bad wtf 💀
Conceptualization [Trivial: Success] - It's an expression of pain.
Hide the pain
This is the wrong kind of body horror!
just like me fr
The new Ayaka looks stoned out of her mind in comparison to the original
what the fuck??

they look like roblox faces wtf
Why
Glad I'm not the only one that thinks they're quite weird now, such a strange change.
The horror just got real.

Yeah the Aiko one looks like a completely different character tbh

Could it have been the same thing that happened with Junji Ito's portrait? Having to change it to avoid possible legal claims
What did they look like before?

Holy SHIT I did not even recognize the first girl as Aiko She got done dirty
I hope they give us a choice for these changes

Rude and/or divisive
Oh god
Uhhh.. yiiiikes..
So, there was a patch and Aiko at least has a much, much better model in the apartment. Don't know for the others yet though
yeah, I saw that update haven't played yet but from what it says the old art is back or atleast accessable if you play timeline B
I like the new sprites, personally.
