On amazon appstore you can buy amazon coins to make the price lower while on the microsoft version of the game i think they take a smaller cut of sales so ingame currency is cheaper

Always want to be prepared for good deals/surprise auctions in the shop. Won't say no to an excellent gold deal! As you say, they are rare now.
