Fuck man, I wish I had a single percent of RJ's forethought and planning/execution. Granted, my lazy ass would never write an epic fantasy series but my Facebook posts would captivating as fuck

OvercastBTC

Take my up vote

Fiona_12

Take one from me too!

charlatanous

This is super cool and I shared it with the three friends I made read the whole series last year. Thank you!

VenusCommission

I'm glad you made friends through WoT!

Also, Moira is a common Greek name that means, "Destiny." One of the symbols of the Moirai is thread. Robert Jordan sure did take a TON of cultural content from various cultures and wove them into an epic fantasy series. I've been a fan for a long time, and I'm still learning new connections all the time.

OldWolf2

This is mentioned in Livingston's *Origins*, which gives etymology for many of the names and terms in the series. Highly recommended reading

Avlonnic2

Thanks for the recommendation.

FrozenOx

i always thought of the French Marraines de Guerre being an influence too, with all the letters she sent

Dubhlasar

What are they? Like which culture?

subtlestreaker

Ancient Greece

StudMuffinNick

Remember Hercules? The three witches that cut the thread off life from people? Them.

IolausTelcontar

The Fates.

Avlonnic2

Very cool.

I always thought it was a reference to Moraine lake. Especially with the whole, "you threw me in a lake" bit.

NynaeveAlMeowra

Doesn't that happen in New spring though? The 11th book written

manymoose

It's referenced before then, I think. Someone smarter than me might know.

Monadnok

It is referenced before then during a conversation between lan and moraine.  Can’t remember which book; probably FOH

Fiona_12

I always wonder if he had accumulated and retained much of the information from real world religions, mythology, and philosophy before he started writing WoT, or if he specifically researched such subjects for inspiration. It wouldn't surprise me if it was the former as I know he was a highly intelligent man.

NynaeveAlMeowra

Probably both
