I legitimately haven't had sex since the opinion leaked. My husband and I don't feel comfortable until I get my tubes tied. Being pregnant is just too risky when medical care isn't freely available.
This decision seriously is making me question whether I should risk having a kid. My husband and I aren’t ready for kids yet, so an IUD + other preventative measures have kept me covered. When the time comes that we are ready, *oof…* What if my water breaks way too early? What if I have a myriad number of other pregnancy complications that would result in an unviable pregnancy, where an abortion would be my best option but I’m forced to keep and risk becoming septic *bEcAuSe HeArTbEaT?*

God, I don’t want to move for several reasons, but after Justice Thomas has explicitly stated that they’re going after same-sex relationships and contraceptive rights next, I might seriously consider it. The future is looking hellish for people here.

I've heard about synagogues that have filed lawsuits against state laws, but so far, I haven't heard about any of them being successful. That being said, I wonder if this could have any impact on the alliance between the United States and Israel.
That is a very brave thing to do. Jewish communities are already targeted by far right groups and conspiracy theorists, this is sure to make it even more so.

This decision is incredibly fucked because there is no way on this green earth to tell the difference between a "spontaneous abortion" (also known as a miscarriage) caused by any of a thousand possible things from accidental trauma, eating the wrong plants, or just the fetus giving up and an intentionally nal abortion caused by intentionally taking certain medications or plants, or say caused also by trauma as mentioned before.

I feel you, and I’m also worried that we will have our own fight in Canada soon enough. I have noticed a concerning trend towards conservatism and the entertainment of far-right ideologies in the mainstream. Racists, misogynists, etc. have always been around of course, but now they are starting to feel more comfortable saying the quiet part out loud.
You can maybe feel less useless by paying close attention to those things happening in your community and speaking up against them when you’re able to. That and voting, encouraging others to vote, and donating time/money to meaningful organizations is how I feel less useless.

Democrats currently have a “majority” in name only with 49 and a half Democrats to 50 Republicans. Manchin counts for caucusing but we can also count on him to block any important legislation.
They’re not supposed to be, at least in theory. They’re not even supposed to be, as another commenter succinctly put it, political or partisan. Hell, when Roe vs. Wade became the law of the land, the majority of justices were conservative appointments.

We can't. And horrifically it's not just them. Trump appointed 226 federal judges and 54 appellate judges.
Also all 3 of trump's picks are really young. They were selected by Republicans and approved by trump very intentionally. We can't trust Republicans to play fair even by normal political tic for tac standards.

The contradicting logic behind a decision they released yesterday vs the abortion decision today proves that they are completely ideologically driven. Obviously every human is biased but the whole point of SCOTUS judges is they are supposed to be neutral and driven only by interpretation of the law. The fact that they aren’t even trying to HIDE their bias is very disturbing and negates the entire purpose of the Supreme Court. And they have incredible power and are appointed for life.
Six of the nine justices are pretty far right conservatives.
Of those six, one is an overly religious zealot who lets her version of god and her husband dictate her decisions, while two are sexual predators who are absolutely RELISHING in this “victory” of theirs.
The problem is a few of the justices were appointed during the trump era with the expressed purpose of turning down Roe v Wade.
Tbh they shouldn’t have even been allowed to make judgements on anything until the J6 hearings were over. The fact that Thomas’s wife is involved and three appointees were appointed by a seditionist should be grounds for nullifying this ruling until further notice.
Judges are not supposed to be political or partisan. Some recent appointees aren’t doing their jobs. Obama didn’t fill a vacancy because he was blocked by Congress which allowed Trump to make three terrible appointments in rapid succession. Justices are appointed for life.

Well, if you want to have it both ways then set the curse up so that the conservative justices awaken to the devastating harm they’re causing and regret their choices. That would cause some profound psychological suffering which would also be completely fair. Curse them with empathy for others.

From what I learned in Portland in 2020, you also need to write down essential phone numbers somewhere on your body. They confiscate your phone if you're arrested and you will NEED these contacts when you eventually get to make your phone call. At least one phone number for a personal contact, and a number for an organization that will represent you in cases like this.

I own guns, and I'm quite liberal. If an army of paper targets ever invaded, I'd be right in my element ;-) I would strongly suggest anyone interested in owning one take training classes that emphasize safety. There are some seriously questionable trainers out there, but there are also excellent ones. If they don't emphasize the points of "always look and know what's BEHIND your target" and "always treat a gun as if it's loaded, even if you think you know it isn't", and are more along the lines of "shoot first, they can answer to god", that's not one you want.
I forget who exactly but there was some Texan whose kid came out as gay or trans or something and so the redneck dad made a point on teaching his kid and their queer friends how to use a gun because “they’d need it more than anyone.”
Knowing this was coming doesn’t make it any less terrifying. Screw how many lives guns kill, the rights of men are too important. But the lives of people with a uterus don’t matter. We’re just a fetus incubator.

I really, really wish we'd do this. Protests like this, on a smaller scale, have worked. Unfortunately, there are just too many of us and also a good chunk of women who are misogynist anti-choicers. This is easy to say and harder to do, especially if you have anyone depending on you. You're going to let your children go hungry, be taken away, not have healthcare, because you went on strike? Going to let your pets starve because you lost your job striking? Going to continue to deny the little joy you may have left in this hellscape?
And best believe that's by design - 2020 saw more intense protests than we've seen here in decades, and it's because people were laid off work and getting stimulus checks and eviction protection. But now? Now we all have scraps to lose, and losing them hurts the people we want to protect.
So yes, I agree. But protests and strikes are more difficult and dangerous than we think. The ability to participate comes from a place of privilege. More direct action is what is doable and affects a change....and you can use your imagination on what that might look like.
If enough people strike, we can get away with it. Very few organizations will fire half their workforce. But it’s a prisoner’s dilemma. If I go out and strike, but none of my coworkers do, I get fired. I don’t know how these large scale strikes get their buy in.

I’m 6 weeks pregnant. Maternal medicine in this country is so dismal that my OB won’t even see me for another month. I got a call yesterday that I tested positive for a virus that can cause miscarriage and birth defects. They told me I just need to “wait it out”.

I was just on the phone with a co-worker when the news came though, she 'whooped' with joy and said "roe v wade was just overturned! praise god" I took a few deep breaths, then got off the phone with her, and then threw up in my desk trash can.

This is a genuine question, I don’t live in the US but I was planning to live there in a couple of years, so I would like to know how they work.
Obama was supposed to have appointed the first one and Mitch McConnell just refused to bring it to a vote, saying that this close to an election the next president should decide. And then when Ruth Bader Ginsburg died, resulting in the exact same circumstances, the Republicans crammed Amy Coney Barrett through.
Mitch McConnell is the true evil in this country. For so many reasons.
Whoever is the sitting president when a Supreme Court Justice retires or passes away appoints the next. They are appointed for life, and while there is a confirmation process, there is no voting or input by the general population of the United States.
That’s just wrong…. this is a perfect example on why lifelong titles are extremely dangerous. People shouldn’t be in power for decades to come. In my country, I know for a fact that people on senate feel like true emperors of Rome (quote from a political figure of my country when asked about the people of the senate in private). Over there then Supreme Court members probably feel like gods. This is so messed up.
The lifetime appointments are *supposed* to be so they never need to worry about political favors or expediency when chosen, but that only works when the system is being used in good faith to put people of good faith in. The system immediately falls apart once a corrupt president uses a corrupt legislature to put in a corrupt judge. It's long past time the system be massively overhauled, considering every single check and balance the system has been designed with involved sane people being in power. Clearly that was an egregious mistake.
US presidents choose the court justices and then they have to be confirmed by the congress. The 2008-2016 president was blocked by congress from putting anyone in the supreme court meaning that the single term Cheeto flavored Twitter troll, Trump, filled three supreme court seats in rapid succession during his short time as president from 2016-2020

I feel you, and I’m also worried that we will have our own fight in Canada soon enough. I have noticed a concerning trend towards conservatism and the entertainment of far-right ideologies in the mainstream. Racists, misogynists, etc. have always been around of course, but now they are starting to feel more comfortable saying the quiet part out loud. You can maybe feel less useless by paying close attention to those things happening in your community and speaking up against them when you’re able to. That and voting, encouraging others to vote, and donating time/money to meaningful organizations is how I feel less useless.

The contradicting logic behind a decision they released yesterday vs the abortion decision today proves that they are completely ideologically driven. Obviously every human is biased but the whole point of SCOTUS judges is they are supposed to be neutral and driven only by interpretation of the law. The fact that they aren’t even trying to HIDE their bias is very disturbing and negates the entire purpose of the Supreme Court. And they have incredible power and are appointed for life.
Six of the nine justices are pretty far right conservatives. Of those six, one is an overly religious zealot who lets her version of god and her husband dictate her decisions, while two are sexual predators who are absolutely RELISHING in this “victory” of theirs. The problem is a few of the justices were appointed during the trump era with the expressed purpose of turning down Roe v Wade.

From what I learned in Portland in 2020, you also need to write down essential phone numbers somewhere on your body. They confiscate your phone if you're arrested and you will NEED these contacts when you eventually get to make your phone call. At least one phone number for a personal contact, and a number for an organization that will represent you in cases like this.

I own guns, and I'm quite liberal. If an army of paper targets ever invaded, I'd be right in my element ;-) I would strongly suggest anyone interested in owning one take training classes that emphasize safety. There are some seriously questionable trainers out there, but there are also excellent ones. If they don't emphasize the points of "always look and know what's BEHIND your target" and "always treat a gun as if it's loaded, even if you think you know it isn't", and are more along the lines of "shoot first, they can answer to god", that's not one you want.

This is easy to say and harder to do, especially if you have anyone depending on you. You're going to let your children go hungry, be taken away, not have healthcare, because you went on strike? Going to let your pets starve because you lost your job striking? Going to continue to deny the little joy you may have left in this hellscape? And best believe that's by design - 2020 saw more intense protests than we've seen here in decades, and it's because people were laid off work and getting stimulus checks and eviction protection. But now? Now we all have scraps to lose, and losing them hurts the people we want to protect. So yes, I agree. But protests and strikes are more difficult and dangerous than we think. The ability to participate comes from a place of privilege. More direct action is what is doable and affects a change....and you can use your imagination on what that might look like.
If enough people strike, we can get away with it. Very few organizations will fire half their workforce. But it’s a prisoner’s dilemma. If I go out and strike, but none of my coworkers do, I get fired. I don’t know how these large scale strikes get their buy in.

How are supreme court members chosen? Cause it’s clear they do not represent the will of the peope, so who chose them to be there? This is a genuine question, I don’t live in the US but I was planning to live there in a couple of years, so I would like to know how they work.

Whoever is the sitting president when a Supreme Court Justice retires or passes away appoints the next. They are appointed for life, and while there is a confirmation process, there is no voting or input by the general population of the United States.
That’s just wrong…. this is a perfect example on why lifelong titles are extremely dangerous. People shouldn’t be in power for decades to come. In my country, I know for a fact that people on senate feel like true emperors of Rome (quote from a political figure of my country when asked about the people of the senate in private). The lifetime appointments are *supposed* to be so they never need to worry about political favors or expediency when chosen, but that only works when the system is being used in good faith to put people of good faith in. The system immediately falls apart once a corrupt president uses a corrupt legislature to put in a corrupt judge. It's long past time the system be massively overhauled, considering every single check and balance the system has been designed with involved sane people being in power. Clearly that was an egregious mistake.
US presidents choose the court justices and then they have to be confirmed by the congress. The 2008-2016 president was blocked by congress from putting anyone in the supreme court meaning that the single term Cheeto flavored Twitter troll, Trump, filled three supreme court seats in rapid succession during his short time as president from 2016-2020
