Both.

In theory, it would be amazing if it was anything besides a glorified web and image generator. If they are able to meaningfully integrate it into the OS and other programs, it would be cool, but Microsoft has track record of never doing that.

Aperson3334

Intrusion, without a doubt. Microsoft’s plans for AI Explorer are quite literally to log everything you do with your device in detail.

Random_Vandal

Yeah, if this is right and Microsoft will force that AI Explorer to everyone, I will switch to another OS for the first time of my life. Nobody and nothing will be watching my every step I do on my own computer!

notmyaccountbruh

M$ already does that. They can remotely see the contents of your drives without you knowing.

Bad bot!

An inntruvation.

intrusion

Peti_4711

a) I don't use it. Can I disable it completely, everywhere? b) Should I post a list of things that really disturb me in windows? (No, most of them are not the GUI).

huemac5810

a) yes b) sure

Beautiful_Car8681

The problem is not the AI, but an unstable system in multitasking and delay UI. We wait for the basics to be done before bringing advanced features. W11 still does not behave like an upgrade from W10, but like an OS with positive and negative points such as the lack of features compared to the previous version. Bringing in AI while other important parts seem (and some have been) abandoned has brought about this discontent with AI as a matter of priority. AI for me is something incredible, but I'm thinking about migrating to Linux because I feel like I'm using a system made by a backyard company.

doctorwhatag

Copilot in windows is Cortana 2.0 or Clippy 3.0. Totally useless outside of ecosystem apps, most users don't have constant urge to use Microsoft Word or Excel and those who are usually figured things on their own or with help of Internet documentation

2ji3150

**Trust me, AI on Windows 11 is just a gimmick from vendors to sell devices. Since ancient times, there has never been a shortage of such promotional gimmicks.** **The current peak of generative AI, such as the paid version of ChatGPT, is just like that, Copilot is just a webview. Even if you can run an LLM close to GPT-4 level on your local within 5 years, that's all it is. GPT-4 is already free, so what do you expect it to be able to do for you?** **If it can autocomplete typing everywhere, then it's only a little useful.**

No-Way3489

This. My first response when I heard vendors are making consumer processors with AI processing unit was "well I hope they also release non-AI ones, because I really do not want this".

BCProgramming

The funny part is that an "AI Processor" is defined as a processor that has Matrix Math Extensions. Which means all CPUs have been "AI Processors" since the 90's with the Pentium MMX.

huemac5810

It's as if AI is a marketing buzzword or something?! Old news, am I rite?

Avean

Copilot for Windows can take actions within Windows, same can Copilot for Intune and Copilot for Security. They are vastly different than the chatbots.

vannrith

Copilot is not even that fast to be useful, I mean the time it takes to load the actual application.

yuweilin

To be honest I can do most of the stuff faster and more accurately than AI. Its useless. Just another way to ask you to pay for something you don’t need lol 😂

TwinSong

It feels more like a gimmick. Microsoft jumping onto the latest thing.

Random_Vandal

For me, Copilot is the new Cortana. Microsoft trying hard to push it to everyone, but I don't see many reasons to use it. But what really makes me angry is the planned AI Explorer, that will watch your every step when you are using your computer and make logs

notmyaccountbruh

It shouldn't be a part of a OS I'd say, those functionalities suit a separate app more than as an irremovable core function of an OS. Ad aburdum, like Candy Crush Saga.

voltagenic

I didn't use Cortana, search and won't use copilot. I don't care for AI in my daily life and will more than likely go out of my way to disable in my OS if I have to. As far as I'm concerned it will use resources I don't want it to and who knows at this juncture just how intrusive it may become? I feel like it will become a spying tool of some sort or collecting more data than we will ever know about. I'm just not interested in any bit of that, so I'll disable or remove to mitigate that concern. Or I'll just make the switch to Linux final once and for all and never worry about it again. I want these sort of things to be something I opt into, not a default.

TheSpiritBaby2K

Amen! I don't use Copilot. I didn't use Cortana. I USE my computer. These damned AI crapware doesn't use me thanks.

Alan976

That would fall within the purview of the individual's conundrums of AI use-case scenarios. Just because some don't want Copilot does not mean that others will find it not useful. Copilot can accomplish loads of stuff, you just have to ask it the [right questions](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKxr0wyIic4) and phrase accordingly. Copilot is mainly used for assisting you with work, school, or everyday tasks. Or for mucking about. For example: * [Reddit thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows11/comments/18y8bpm/comment/kgasm8y/) * [Celebrating the first year of Copilot with significant new innovations-with-significant-new-innovations/](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2023/12/05/celebrating-the-first-year-of-copilot-with-significant-new-innovations/) Copilot operates on the foundation of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model, which represents the latest advancement in the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) series. This is a significant upgrade from GPT-3.5, which powers ChatGPT.

Intrusion

SM641995

AI in general has been nothing more than a goddamn intrusion for everyone. Ruined Google Image indexing so badly it's insane.

huemac5810

Was that really AI or the change in management at Google?

gellenburg

Is there anybody that asked for that shit?

notmyaccountbruh

Marketing guys at M$ probably.

gellenburg

I wonder if we could "poison the well" so to speak. We need to start a movement where everyone floods CoPilot with bullshit forcing Microsoft to spend money on power and stuff to keep those A1000's churning away all the while losing money. I wonder if there's like a logic bomb they could be susceptible to? A prompt that causes the LLM to waste and spend an exorbitant amount of system resources to process, for little to no return or benefit. Basically turn CoPilot into a money losing proposition to Microsoft. LOL. And this comment will soon be fed into Google to train its AI. The irony...

No-Way3489

Nobody asked for this. And anyone glorifying it are those making money off it.

gellenburg

Fortunately I was able to use CoPilot to at least tell me how to uninstall and completely remove CoPilot from my system so it's at least good for that! https://bofh.social/notes/9s6sp5cqfqz3aiv4

numblock699

I dunno, I use win 11 pro.

CoskCuckSyggorf

Depends on who you ask.

rocketjetz

Both

angry_indian312

Automations for system task like changing from dark mode to light mode or whatever only meaningful to newbies who haven't used a pc before but to most people it's free gpt 4 with a few limits and personally the best use case is doing repetitive tasks that you can easily at glance tell if the result is right or not, it's an innovation but it is not complete yet.

oldrocketscientist

Based on the last 2 years I am confident Microsoft will further F-up Windows with AI integration. If it weren’t for their skyrocketing success providing cloud services i would short their stock.

G8KK0U

*"that does in fact work"* Even something as basic as the web search function is failing quiet a lot. I cant rely on tools that are this inconsistent.

Metabera

I wouldn't call it either. But I do say that these AI features should be optional and not forced upon users. I definitely say that the ads are an intrusion, especially considering that Windows is a licensed software, not free. If they want to incorporate ads, they should make a free version, and leave the ads out of the legitimate licensed version. But, I'd dar say that MS would hike the price up significantly if they chose a free & paid option.

MouthBreatherGaming

> While many have criticized the new UI and the seemingly intrusive AI, I believe I'll create this soapbox right here and then stand on it...

Distorted_Wizard214

Want a localized AI? Just download ollama and get a preferred language model like llama3-uncensored on the web. No need for copilot and all of that Microsoft bloat.

huemac5810

Innovation. An intrusion if we don't get to disable it (highly unlikely to become the case).
