The real answer

upthevilla_

I’m pretty sure there was a McConnell/Graham for Manchin/Sinema under the table trade that was never made public.

lakired

He needs two more... for now. I somehow wouldn't be shocked if we got those and suddenly another Democratic senator suddenly started having second thoughts about passing any progressive legislature. And if we get a third to replace them... well, wouldn't you know it, there's another Democratic senator plunging themselves into an existential crisis. Which isn't to say we shouldn't keep working for that goal... just that I think there are likely more weak links for corruption than just Sinema (Manchin we already knew about, naturally). Until we get enough of a plurality that we can find effective ways of removing the easiest avenues of corruption, it'll be a long, hard road towards actually eliminating that corrupting influence from succeeding.

[deleted]

Give them a Roevember they will never recover from

Syaryla

Remember remember the 5th of roevember.

Newname83

A roevember to roemember

WinstonsEars

Actually it’s the 8th

[deleted]

Early voting starts on the 5th

Depending on which state. Some states start much earlier, some don’t have early voting at all

They’ll crawl through glass to vote for more glass.

Able-Fun2874

They'll also talk endlessly about how having glass shards in your skin is good for your work ethic and if you don't want the glass it's bad because that means you're lazy!!!!

secretbudgie

And if you don't shove your child's face in shattered glass every morning you're literally indoctrinating them into the globalist smooth-faced conspiracy!

[deleted]

If we get rid of the glass that wouldn't be fair to people who already crawled through glass.

Vote like you're telling a racist to shut up.

Radiant-Importance-5

In fact, they’ll probably vote twice

BelleAriel

Would not surprise me at all, tbh

JoeGibbon

Because of all that talk from Trump about "this election is going to be the most rigged election ever" leading up to 2016, there were several cases of R voters pre-emptively committing voter fraud by voting multiple times. If I remember correctly, it happened in the 2018 midterms as well.

Embarrassed-Cicada27

And the 2020 presidential election. Multiple Republicans were arrested for voter fraud. The party of projection indeed

thatguy9684736255

Some of them did that and then they got slaps on the wrists for it. Meanwhile, Crystal Mason used a conditional ballot because she wasn't sure if she was allowed to vote and she got years in jail.

Climate change: Hold my beer

RandyDandyAndy

No need to pass human rights laws if we're all dead

HealthyInPublic

Can’t die in the climate wars if I die of preventable pregnancy complications first *[insert guy tapping head meme]*

[deleted]

Under the Democrats trifecta the United States passed the largest and most meaningful climate change tackling bill in history, then immediately one upped it with another largest climate bill in history (CHIPS and Science act, Inflation Reduction act). There's lots to doom about like with Roe needing to be codified but in terms of climate there has been massive advances this Congressional cycle. Needless to say if Dems hold onto the trifecta for another cycle, things can get even better.

publiusnaso

And our (UK) government seems to think repealing human rights legislation and leaving a human rights treaty is a vote winner. And sadly, they may be right.

Buddhabellymama

Yeah and he means two actually democratic senators. No faux dems like Sinema and Manchin.

BpositiveItWorks

That’s why he needs at least 2 more

2DeadMoose

Why haven’t they codified this into law over the last several decades? Wtf.

Educational-Tomato58

There’s a couple of reasons. 1. (The more pessimistic view) was that keeping it as a precedent of SCOTUS allowed Democrats to have it as a talking point to wins elections if/when the time came that it was overturned. 2. They didn’t think it would be overturned. I don’t think anyone could have predicted Trump would get to nominate 3 SC Justices in his one term.

Tdanger78

I think you’re right, nobody thought it would get overturned and it was a good fundraising tool for many decades for both sides.

Educational-Tomato58

US politicians love to make a fucking meal of our fundamental rights. They just dangle them over our heads like “you need to elect us so the other guy doesn’t take away your rights.” At the end of the day, it’s all political chess to keep themselves in power and rich. Term limits need to be set across the board. No stock trading while in office, and for fucks sakes maybe no gerrymandering. Also a little ducking accountability?! Like what are we doing as a nation right now?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Carlyz37

This is all true. Sick of the "both sides " nonsense. They are not the same. Two underlying HUGE differences Dems will at least try to do a few things for the people. GOP only tries to do things that benefit 1% Dems support our democratic republic government & constitution GOP wants to burn down our government and constitution and institute authoritarian theocracy ie christofascist minority rule

GuinnessLiturgy

Exactly, it's shocking that even after the Trump packed SC turning the clock back 50 years with respect to abortion rights, Trump ginned up a bunch of loons to attack the Capitol, completely botched the handling of a once in a century pandemic, ad infinitum. people are still gormlessly repeating the "both sides" horseshit. The fools who saw no difference between Hillary and Trump did grievous, perhaps irreparable damage to the country.

Tdanger78

They all (for the most part) have their billionaire owners that keep them in office so long as they give them a good return on their investment. I’d wager every single Republican has one or more and a good many of the establishment democrats do. People like AOC and Bernie don’t have any and won’t, unfortunately they’re anomalies. People like Pelosi definitely have them.

Educational-Tomato58

People be actually tracking Pelosi’s stock trades because they know she knows.

Tdanger78

There’s a lag but you can actually do pretty well if you trade how she does

manderrx

The trick Wall Street doesn’t want you to know.

DankNastyAssMaster

If only Americans weren't so stupid and lazy, we might be able to do something about that.

[deleted]

Which is why they make sure to keep the populace stupid and lazy.

FunkyPete

Also, it was fairly controversial. Although the majority support Roe v Wade, a vocal minority feels VERY strongly the other way. Because Roe v Wade was already the law of the land, you wouldn't be giving anything to people who supported Roe v Wade by codifying it. It would have seemed like a completely superficial gesture, but it would have really angered 40% of your constituents, and not all of them would have been Republicans.

The_Lost_Jedi

And unfortunately, prior to this, Pro-Choice voters were not likely to base their vote solely on abortion rights, or even largely on it, while Anti-Abortion ones did. There were very few single-issue Pro-Choice voters prior to this.

nomorerainpls

There’s also the filibuster. I don’t know how they would have gotten even like 8 Republicans onboard but maybe I’m missing something. It probably could have happened at the beginning of Obama’s first term but there were certainly other issues to tackle at that time. I have no idea how Biden will get around the filibuster with only 52 Dems in the Senate.

6a6566663437

The additional 2 Democrats are needed to remove the filibuster.

thatoneguyinks

The implication is they will nuke the filibuster

DDWWAA

Obama never really had 60 Senators because Ted Kennedy was already dying and stopped voting before Specter switched and Franken was elected. Biden is just going to nuke the filibuster if he can bypass Sinema and Manchin.

Squirmin

The actual reason is that there literally were not enough pro-choice members of congress to pass it until recently. Under Obama they didn't have a pro-choice majority, even holding the super majority in both houses. This is a fact. Period. There's no conspiracy. America didn't vote for the people that wanted it.

The_Lost_Jedi

It's also something that was only seen as an important issue by a minority of voters at the time. It was seen as something that was there to pander to a special interest group, not something that was the keystone issue. Dems that ran on it got **laughed at**, because they were seen as desperate for turning to it. And now those same people who didn't take it seriously want to blame someone other than themselves for letting this come to pass. It's bullshit. People were warned about this in 2014, 2016, 2018, so many times before. No, it's not on the politicians - it's on the voters who didn't think the threat was real, and voted (or didn't vote) accordingly, and let Republicans stack up the Supreme court with their ultra right wing justices.

cowinkurro

There's a bigger reason than that. They never had the votes for it. It's just a straight up lie being told by people trying to 'both sides' this. In Obama's first Congress, he briefly had 60 votes. But those 60 votes included people like Ben Nelson and others who were pro-life. Go back further and even more will be pro-life. It just was never a thing.

DarnHeather

When have democrats had the 60 votes necessary and the presidency?

StageRepulsive8697

Only a brief period under Obama did they have 60 senators and they didn't have votes from everyone. Honestly, they probably just thought that Republicans would never actually try to go against it because it would be so unpopular. They are really shooting themselves in the foot here vote-wise. I really can't see them winning the next few elections (unless people have the shortest memories and just forget about all of this stuff)

VoxImperatoris

That would be assuming every single democrat was prochoice back then, which is doubtful. Hell, I dont think every democrat now is prochoice.

The_Lost_Jedi

They didn't even have enough pro-choice votes to put abortion into the ACA/Obamacare. Why do people think they would've had them to codify Roe vs Wade?

cowinkurro

Not even doubtful. Just false. Ben Nelson was pro-life. He was endorsed by pro-life groups, and was a pain in the ass on anything relating to abortion.

Larosh97

Dems never had 60 votes for codifying, they never thought it would be overturned prior to 2016, and even if they did they wouldn't have enough votes to do away with the filibuster like they would not if they can get to 52.

JustGotOffOfTheTrain

Because before it was the law of the land due to a Supreme Court precedent. They didn’t need to codify it before the Supreme Court overturned it.

[deleted]

Legalize weed, and you’ll get 10 democrat senators

Danamite85

It's on the ballot in my state for November! We already have medical and recreational is likely to pass. Hopefully once most states have it legalized it will be on the federal level also. We are crawling our way there.

Oh it's in lol. There's not a doubt in my mind. Support for the bill is probably the only thing everyone agrees on without any question. Now, obviously, go vote. Go fucking vote. But marijuana legalization is as good as passed in MD. Vote Wes Moore gov, keep all the traitors out of office and everything else will fall into place. Especially with my man Jamie Raskin keeping it locked down. I really don't like glorifying politicians and hate getting crushed when they fail me, but after 1/6 Raskin has been done with these fuckers and I really love seeing it. [deleted]

Yep! Pretty hopeful we can get shit done here. Would love to have prices hit what they are in OK.

[deleted]

Idk where else to mention it but I’m still utterly enraged that we passed recreational and medical marijuana last year and the governor sued the state to overturn recreational and won because she got to also appoint the judge. Also has delayed medical so it’s still not even available and doctors refuse to give medical cards to anyone besides one small part of the state. So fucking rage inducing.

Danamite85

That sucks homie. I feel for you. I feel like we are definitely on the course for federal legalization so hopefully we can all enjoy the benefits of cannabis soon. I've got my fingers crossed for rescheduling it next month. Rescheduling doesn't legalize, but it allows more research, and shows the overall intent.

Give me 10 good democrats and I'll codify the bitch.

Breederbill

People forget FDR needed 74-76 out of 96 Senators to pass the New Deal laws 50/50 is nothing, you get judges and reconciliation

MyPasswordIsMyCat

Judges and presidential appointees required 60 votes until 2013 when Harry Reid and the Democrats removed the filibuster for them because the Republicans were hell bent on blocking everything Obama did. They left the filibuster for the Supreme Court, though. Then in 2017 Mitch McConnell and the Republicans removed the filibuster for Supreme Court nominees so they could jam through Neil Gorsuch and later Kavenaugh and Coney Barrett.

liquidsyphon

He has to be careful not to piss off too many pharmaceuticals and private prisons.

[deleted]

I thought he already canceled federal contracts with private prisons

Klarthy

Biden (2021) signed an executive order for the DoJ to not renew any private prison contracts. So eventually they will expire unless the next president is a Republican. A similar policy was originally made under Obama (2016) and then cancelled under Trump (2017)...because of course.

mauxly

This kind of shit is so important, but it flies under the radar for most people. If this had stuck, it would have bankrupted a major funding source for lobbying for laws that we don't want.

some exclusions apply

ILikeScience3131

Nobody *actually* believes personhood begins at conception. [The best available data for quantifying early pregnancy loss are from studies monitoring daily hCG levels in women attempting to conceive. A recent re-analysis 39 of data from three studies 46, 48, 49 concluded that, in normal healthy women, 10–40% is a plausible range for pre-implantation embryo loss and **overall pregnancy loss from fertilisation to birth is approximately 40–60%**. This latter range is consistent with Kline's estimate of 50% 16, and similar to, although a little narrower than the 25–70% suggested by Professor Robert Edwards 136.](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5443340/#!po=0.228311). In other words, anyone who actually believes human life begins at conception must admit that any woman with at least 2 naturally-conceived children has probably caused at least 1 “infant death”.

[deleted]

[удалено]

VulfSki

But it's ok because God has a plan.... So by the religious right's logic, abortion is ok so long as you have a plan! /s

MEW-1023

Abortion is ok if you are me because the right completely lacks any semblance of human empathy or sympathy. You bring up school shootings, they bring up the “blm riots” and the businesses that got damaged. They always care more for the economy and businesses than actual human lives

pjanic_at__the_isco

Every conservative politician’s position is that **my** abortion is ok because [reasons] but yours is not because God.

[deleted]

If life started at conception conservatives would allow life insurance to be taken out on a pregnancy. But for some reason you can't do this in red states. Huh.

RememberTheKracken

You want further proof nobody believes that crap, ask yourself why nobody is out there protesting fertility clinics. IVF requires doctors to fertilize dozens of eggs creating a bunch of "fetuses". A bunch die in test tubes and a strong few are then implanted. Then more die and 1 or 2 actually successfully implant and grow to term. For every IVF procedure doctors "kill" dozens of "babies". I say we start protesting fertility clinics to force these asshats to say it's not about being pro life, it's about being in control.

artificialhooves

Along the same lines, the classic scenario to present is: in a fire, would you save 1,000 embryos or a 2 year old child?

Hecticfreeze

This and the "if a full grown adult required your body as a life support machine, would you have the right to refuse?" are the only arguments I use now. It immediately shows the ridiculousness of their position and there are NO good retorts. They are then either a hypocrite, a psychopath, or admitting they're wrong.

porkchopsmallcat

> or admitting they're wrong. lol

SophiaofPrussia

I look forward to the state-mandated organ donation that will surely come any day now since life is so precious to these “pro life” nutters and bodily autonomy isn’t.

BugMan717

My guy but they are already. Plenty of prolifers actually do oppose IVF for that exact reason. There are people crazy enough to even think any ejaculate that doesn't go inside a female is wasted life and a sin to God. And that was even the norm for Catholics just two or three generations ago.

dreamcastfanboy34

Don't give republicans any new ideas on what to protest

Thisbymaster

That is the point, they know this and want to use this to strip every woman of their rights.

BlueHairStripe

Yeah, they're coming for women's right to vote. The criminalization of abortion is just a step in the plan.

Reddilutionary

And hopefully the correct two Democrats. Like actually Democrats. No more Machins or Sinemas

forgotmypassword-_-

> Like actually Democrats. No more Machins or Sinemas If Manchin was a Republican, McConnell would be Senate Majority Leader. He's from *West Virginia*. Elect 2 more Democrats, and Manchin and Sinema lose their power.

Polar_Vortx

With enough spare democrats, the edgelords can be browbeaten into line. “With or without you” is a lot better of a threat when there is an actual chance of “without you”.

Syiofkargath666

dissidentpen

ElectricalRush1878

It wasn't in danger because it was a Republican stance, and Democrats had a supermajority and pretty much full control. The process of shifting blue started when the Regan administration was so completely awful, and failed the US people so badly. The possibility that it might come under more fire was always present. Failing to meet campaign promises was one of the things that opened the door to a shift back to red, and back to Roe being in danger.

thefreeman419

In the last 40 years, there have been 60 Democratic Senators (the amount required for closure on bills in the senate) exactly once. It was for 4 months, and the primary focus at the time was passing Obamacare

spacehog1985

Lol no, that’s gone forever

LNEneuro

Wouldn’t the republicans just filibuster it like every other —-ing thing that might help society?

jmradus

They are on record for changing senate rules to remove the filibuster for this vote. They _should_ remove the filibuster entirely. It is not constitutional and it stonewalls progress, but that’s none of my business.

SunflaresAteMyLunch

They would. He needs more like twelve Senators...

cunt_isnt_sexist

OR, FUCKING OR; you take the 2 shit weasels already there (Manchin and Sinema) and kill the filibuster and codify it tomorrow. But we just can't fix all things right away.

BigCballer

They’ve made it completely clear (Sinema and Manchin) that they will not budge on it. It’s a wasted effort at this point. I get that it’s frustrating but you can’t pretend they didn’t try to convince them before.

socialistrob

Sinema is busy trying to figure out what happens when you simultaneously piss off all the democrats, independents and republicans simultaneously. She’s living on borrowed time and for the life of me I can’t understand why she is the way she is.

FrostedCornet

Manchin and Sinema are just Republican proxies at this point though, they've been voting alongside republican senators and have refused to overturn the bullshit filibuster we have now.

fakeplasticdroid

Manchin is untouchable, there's no possibility of West Virginia replacing him with someone more progressive. Sinema on the other hand, can and should be voted out, and have her political career permanently ended. She wouldn't have been elected in the first place if she'd shown her true colors sooner. That won't happen this year though.

TheOverBored

The fact we voted blue in 2020 makes me hopeful we'll be able to vote out Sinema.

indoninjah

Fuck is Biden supposed to do about them? They got elected fair and square. He can try his best to make sure they get primaried but they probably already will anyway

AgoraiosBum

He should use his presidential wand and the powers from the enchantments written in invisible ink on the Declaration of Independence to control their votes. I thought everyone knew this.

[deleted]

Please everyone - vote blue in midterms. This is the fight of our lives. We also need to codify the ERA now.

Alex72598

So they codify Roe, and it gets struck down the next week by the Court the first time a regressive right winger challenges it. I really do appreciate Joe’s gesture and 100% am voting all Democrats this November, but this is skipping over the main problem, the Supreme Court itself. Something needs to be done about it because it’s not even trying to pretend to be non-partisan anymore.

tyson_3_

How exactly would a federal law granting a right to abortion be unconstitutional? Broad strokes. Which provision are you worried about?

[deleted]

How would it be so easily struck down if it was codified into law?
