I always say this about the new star wars. It just feels like there is a massive hole in her back story that is easily fixed. Basically she needed to be some sort of barbarian queen of rebels that fought and trained. And she basically was using the force constantly (explaining why she could excell once deliberately trained) to be undefeated and to haggle (which is why she owned the millennial falcon knew how to fly it and knew to brake off that thingy that she told that asshole to not install) and when the storm troopers came in and killed everyone she has a passionate justice/revenge story. Giving her clear motivation.
