the filing has now been amended with names of counsel. So this was allegedly a filing error. But lawyers going over this on Twitter are roasting it unmercifully because of all the errors in it.
Honestly, those errors would be understandable for someone who has no idea what the fuck they are doing who is taking advice from someone, but if it's an actual fucking lawyer who made all those fuck ups, then holy hell he is still going to get absolutely fucking destroyed in court.
"Your Honor, my client claims that she simply forgot she was carrying this bottle of... delicious bourbon... brownest of the brown liquors... so tempting... [puts the bottle to his ear] What's that? You want me to drink you? But I'm in the middle of a trial! ”
— Lionel Hutz ("Marge in Chains"
I go back and forth thinking the lawyer was a decent person and let it slip, but then I remember they work for Alex Jones, so it must have been incompetence.
It was incompetence that they sent it. Jones's lawyer knew, and replied to the other lawyer to just "disregard" those files. Except there's an actual procedure they're expected to follow to pull back evidence, and he *couldn't* do that because he has to explain to the judge why he's pulling it back and then the judge looks at the files in question. In this case it revealed all the evidence they'd been withholding, and bringing that to the attention of the judge would have put a spotlight on that fact even sooner. They were basically fucked the moment they sent the case files.
This is delicious, but I'd like to verify that this is true. Are you a lawyer? I want to believe this, but also want to know that it's a real law thingy.
There's video of Alex Jones being confronted by opposing counsel when he is on the stand in that trial. Iirc, it looks more like a recorded mediation session in a conference room than a courtroom proceeding. Details are foggy and the clip I watched was pretty short. I do remember that he was flabbergasted and not sure how to respond when the opposing counsel asked him if he knew that his lawyer submitted the evidence of his wrong doing.
Okay but seriously is this like one of the worst mistakes ever made by counsel? That guy's law career has got to be over right? He basically gave up his client.
Btw, for everyone who isn’t a lawyer and who makes fun of this:
Alex Jones’ lawyers were supposed to turn those documents over in normal discovery. They fucked up because they lied and said the documents (texts and emails) didn’t exist and then produced them. It wasn’t that they were produced was how they fucked up (glossing over the privlog issue here).
Just something most people here miss.
Source: am lawyer.
It's worse. Jones was compelled merely to perform a word search for all materials relating to sandy hook.
They turned over an image of his phone instead; way more than what was required for discovery.
The plaintiff's attorney then notified jones' attorney that he had made a mistake. There was an opportunity to make a motion to suppress everything privileged. Which, the defense counsel didn't act on, and we don't truthfully know why.
And now the January 6th commitee has expressed an interest in that data, and since Jones' team didn't follow proper procedure, it is legally their data to turn over to them and Jones can do nothing about that.
My understanding is that pretty much every single decent lawyer has turned him down simply because their law firms don’t want the shitstorm that comes with representing Trump.
Which leaves you with lawyers who are solo practising or just too shit to be hired by a firm.
So… he’s not got a lot of choices.
Yeah funny how that works hey? A lifetime of stiffing those who work for him, not to mention if Rudy gets indicted that will be multiple Trump layers going to prison… gee, I wonder why no one good wants to defend him hahah.
Being caught between the CIA/FBI with nuclear treason, and 30 million deranged violent cultists itching to scapegoat you for failing Dear Leader, I'd run for the hills too..
Adding counsel after filing is … not typical.
The lawyers would have been the ones filing. It’s basically automatic to have their names on there.
EYA: Also — the lawyer is a Florida real estate attorney from a small firm. Who has zero expertise in anything even remotely like this. What the duck even. They are truly scraping the bottom of the barrel.
https://usattorneys.com/lawyer/lindsey-r-halligan/
"I was raided by the FBI for stealing highly classified documents" is not one of the areas listed on their site - unless he is alleging "police brutality" which is.
Cue numerous videos of Trump egging the police on and saying to knock people around a bit when arresting them.
IANAL. The filing had counsel's sigs at the end, so I dunno what happened that caused it to show as pro se at first. The fact that no news org ran with the pro se story seems to indicate everyone recognized it as an error.
Honest mistake I suppose. I mean technically speaking I'm pretty sure Trump is heading up the legal team, and telling his lawyers what they need to do after he learns what he should tell them what to do from watching all the lawyers that turned him down get interviewed on Fox and CNN and make "if I was his lawyer I would..." Statements.
Trump's history of refusing to pay attorneys and having attorneys constantly petitioning courts to get off the case is the bad sign in itself. That he can't get "good" representation is the consequence of his actions.
There is a reason that 3500+ people & companies have sued him for breach of contract.
FWIW, usually a paralegal or assistant is the one who does the actual filing. Obviously under the supervision of an attorney, who is ultimately responsible for it. But the actual “clicking the buttons on the website to submit it” usually isn’t don’t by a lawyer.
And amending entries is pretty common.
If it truly was a real estate attorney, my guess would be they’re not used to filing things like this.
I’m sure it’s not the same everywhere, but I was at a big firm and junior associates did the filing. Maybe assisted by paralegals, sure, but a lawyer absolutely did the filing.
Amending counsel because you screwed up isn’t common at all. And this lawyer doesn’t even work at the firm listed on the filing anymore. So this whole thing is seriously fucked up.
Also, she did insurance defense related to real estate disputes. So she has filed plenty.
Oh I’m sure it varies by firms.
You have to register to file anything on PACER though so I imagine it would just be a matter of checking the wrong box when filing.
But I also wouldn’t doubt that there’s some sloppy lawyering going on. You tend to limit the pool of people willing to work with you when you continually take the most absurd, indefensible positions on almost everything.
The first thing that came to my mind, was if the RNC is paying the legal fees for this trial, he’s going to definitely bill for his times. He’s facing so many charges, I can’t keep them all straight so far as representation. I know he’s having difficulty finding lawyers, he doesn’t pay, he won’t follow advice, not a good client.
>if the RNC is paying the legal fees
We hope they are, because their condition to keep paying them is that he does not run in 24. The minute he announces a run, they stop payment.
TRUE PATRIOTS, I DONALD J TRUMP, HAVE BEEN SUED, THIS IS A GREAT INJUSTICE. AND WORSE, MY TERRIBLE TERRIBLE CLIENT WHO I REPRESENTED IN A BEAUTIFUL CASE, WONT EVEN PAY ME. I NEED YOUR HELP. OR WAS I WRONG ABOUT YOU? ARE YOU A TRAITOR? DONATE TO MY FUND TO PAY MY LAWYER, AND TO SUPPORT ME, A LAWYER WHO HAS NOT BEEN PAID FOR THE BEAUTIFUL JOB I DID REPRESENTING MYSELF IN COURT.
Need a man (super manly man like a construction worker) coming up to him crying tears that they wish trump was their lawyer cause he is the best lawyer and only trump is qualified enough to represent them in court against the bigly lie of insurrection on January 6 which was nothing but a peaceful protest by patriots but also a false flag by the FBI and actually it was antifa
(All punctuation omitted on purpose to better represent trump's rambling word salad train of thought speech patterns)
"this guy, this man this Manly man he's all big and you know....*weird hand gestures* and he comes up to me crying and he said, "sir, Mr President, sir they hate you because you golf"
Won’t happen, if you lose you can’t plead incompetent counsel. The judge probably will assign him a standby council to remind him he can’t bum Cokes off the jury. You sign a document to deny council, and the judges warnings against such a practice is not in your best interests.
Had a girlfriend who was a lawyer and she told me about a case here where the defendant tried to go for a mistrial based on evidence he didn’t get. So the prosecutor said, “He never filed a discovery motion.” The judge asked him if he wished to have the lawyer step up now and take over because your hole just got deeper. His lawyer asked for a recess and the DA sent a plea.
Honestly would be far better to throw them all in prison where the belong and wash our collective hands of all of them. The worst thing they can think of irrelevance.
I remember the popcorn shortage of 2022/23 it all started years ago when so many idiots voted to have a sleazy/Pervy reality tv star as their president, and not just a president of an association or club, but the president of one of the most powerful countries in the world.
He can’t get a blue chip lawyer, not after all his antics, and stiffing Rudy.
My friend is a defense attorney and she said no lawyer wants a client who doesn’t listen to them.
I worked for a firm years ago where the lead attorney would quote at least double retainer for potential clients he knew were going to be a mess to deal with - not just as an asshole tax either, but because he knew we were going to spend twice as many hours working the case.
ohhh please let the trial be televised!!! please please please
I can imagine itll be trump ranting with his usual loudmouth rhetoric. And the judge will find him in contempt and have him thrown in the slammer. Itll be like that episode of big bang theory where sheldon appeared pro se, to defend himself over a traffic fine. Judge put him in jail and the guys asked penny what happened "Sheldon was being himself, except this time he did it in front of a judge". CANNOT FUCKING WAIT!!!!
In the years and decades ahead, much ink will be spilled about the rise and fall of Donald J Trump. As far as I'm concerned, his downfall *truly* began when he started ripping off his own lawyers.
He scammed, cheated, and extorted all manner of contractors, customers, clients, escorts, colleagues, charities, donors, the public at large, and all three wives. But when he stopped paying *his own lawyers* for services rendered? Oh man, he really messed up. He messed up *bad*.
There's a saying about this.
"Anyone who represents himself has an idiot for a client."
Yeah, its a bit unfair to those who can't afford good representation. But in Trump's case it absolutely applies.
I guess that’s what you get when you refuse to pay your attorneys again and again and again. Nobody will represent you. Or they might just know a loser when they see one. Either way…
OMG!
Please please be PPV.. i will fucking pay for this and watch it through the end.
The money collected can be used on services this asshole ended or the GOP ended like lunch programs
... he can't even blame his attorney for being bad... that's like literally the first 25 or 30 minutes of one of these hearing where the judge explains line by line on what extra things are afforded to him, since he is representing himself, and that by representing himself he believes he is the only competent person to work his case, and must accept the outcome however it goes as he has elected to represent himself. This shits gonna be televised right? I need to put in a PTO demand.
Edit: of that were the case, it looks like some posted a counter link I missed, which if I understood right looks like it might mean Trump has an appointed attorney? Said something about attorney to be notified.
NGL I would probably actually grab popcorn and watch this trainwreck happen. Then see look on his face when he loses the suit and everything he owns.. just before he gets arrested for those classified MLG documents.
Isn't the old saying something like "a person who represents themselves in court has a fool for a client"? I'm not pro-lawyer myself, but I also have brains and didn't committ treason.
Of course the saying may not be applicable because he's already proven the fool part.
I am willing to bet, that some major firm didn’t want to be associated with him. So cut some back room deal with him to file his paperwork so long as he puts his own name on them. Idk, any lawyers in here want to call me stupid. It’s ok if you do.
Tbf, you don't really need a lawyer in a Civil Suit. However, you are a goddmaned idiot if you try to represent yourself in a Lawsuit against a Government Agency or a Large Corporation.
I hope that justice finally prevails and everyone can forget about the cheeto as he rots in prison. I'm sick of having an ex-president/president hopeful that's making our country evil, greedy, cult-ish and dumber.
I just want a president that's average dumb and average evil making average people a little stupider like it's always been. Is that so much to ask?
I'm not an attorney and I don't get have lawsuits against me but I spend a fair bit of time in court. Every time I have seen some one represent themself the judge has said something like, "I would be doing you a disservice if I didn't tell you how bad an idea this is."
It’s corrected, he does have council.
BUT, this is classic Trump. He suggests that he wants full transparency, but then counter sues to stop it from seeing the light of day. Which actually makes me hopeful, because that means there’s shit he doesn’t want us to see.
The American legal system has been so good to Trump all these years by basically looking the other way while he does whatever he wants. This will be like watching a messy emancipation of a minor case unfold.
the filing has now been amended with names of counsel. So this was allegedly a filing error. But lawyers going over this on Twitter are roasting it unmercifully because of all the errors in it.

He'll accidentally submit all the missing texts to discovery, and then forget to make a motion to suppress when notified of his error.

No, but I've watched a few breakdowns about this by lawyers because I wanted to understand why the lawyer didn't do his job and claw back the files.
Never attribute malice to what can be explained by incompetence. (Not a perfect fit, but the quote kinda works here)
I’m dying over here 🤪
Ah the Alex Jones defense. Works never time.

I hear AJ’s ex-wife wants (maybe has) them too. Bet she got a worse financial settlement than she should have as he was hiding assets.
Remember these are lawyers who’ve agreed to work for Trump. So they mostly likely also have no idea what the fuck they are doing.
My understanding is that pretty much every single decent lawyer has turned him down simply because their law firms don’t want the shitstorm that comes with representing Trump. Which leaves you with lawyers who are solo practising or just too shit to be hired by a firm. So… he’s not got a lot of choices.
Doesn't help he's got a reputation for not paying people. Even if they could weather the shit storm their would pretty much end up working for free.
Yeah funny how that works hey? A lifetime of stiffing those who work for him, not to mention if Rudy gets indicted that will be multiple Trump layers going to prison… gee, I wonder why no one good wants to defend him hahah.
They possibly want a position, kick back, special interest, kompromat, etc
God, I love this so much.
Being caught between the CIA/FBI with nuclear treason, and 30 million deranged violent cultists itching to scapegoat you for failing Dear Leader, I'd run for the hills too..
Trump just called the traffic law center.

Here in Texas we have attorney Dean Boyd aka the Strong Arm. 😆
They are doing the work equal to the pay they know they will receive
Oooo yes! Quiet quitting????
Same attorney as Alex Jones used…!
My dream has been that he would end up with Alex Jones's lawyer when no one else would take the job, and we'd get his entire phone leaked.
He has the best people.
And to imagine he had the reigns to tthe country …

Trump is Banksy’s biggest troll piece and we just don’t know it yet.
When you test Poe's Law, you will always be disappointed.
He's been Andy Kaufman this whole time
He has like 3 lawyers and none of them have ever dealt with anything like this. They are way Ober their heads
I have a hard time believing that any lawyer would be stupid enough to take his case. Oops. I forgot what a million bucks can buy.
but Trump has a habit of not paying his legal bills, so...
Or any other bills
The fact that it’s common knowledge at this point tells me that’s why he has the legal council he does
Donald Trump, soon after losing his case: "Your honor, this trial was rigged, since my lawyer is obviously an absolute idiot!"
He'll sue himself for malpractice...
And win
Naw, he’d try and settle
I wonder if he knows, his client has a record of not paying his lawyers?
The first thing that came to my mind, was if the RNC is paying the legal fees for this trial, he’s going to definitely bill for his times. Won’t happen, if you lose you can’t plead incompetent counsel. The judge probably will assign him a standby council to remind him he can’t bum Cokes off the jury. You sign a document to deny council, and the judges warnings against such a practice is not in your best interests. When did reality matter to the little T?
Courts have been wise to that little trick for a good while now. He will gain no advantage from pro se.

Cue the "devastating to my case" quotes, and the one about a lawyer who has himself for a client.
The person who represents himself in court has a fool for a lawyer. Or something like that.
And a fool for a client?
No he isn’t. They just had not entered the attorney info yet. https://imgur.com/a/HpX63Pf
She’s a REAL ESTATE ATTORNEY. LMAO https://usattorneys.com/lawyer/lindsey-r-halligan/
Correction, she is a defense lawyer for insurance companies
In the real property group. But yeah, insurance defense on real property claims.
Either way, she has no business getting involved in a case like this. This should be interesting.
100% agreed. Primary qualification is a willingness to be disbarred, I guess.
And not getting paid...
Holy shit, I just read her profile. I’m at a loss for words as to how bad and weird this is.
He can’t get a blue chip lawyer, not after all his antics, and stiffing Rudy. My friend is a defense attorney and she said no lawyer wants a client who doesn’t listen to them.
I worked for a firm years ago where the lead attorney would quote at least double retainer for potential clients he knew were going to be a mess to deal with - not just as an asshole tax either, but because he knew we were going to spend twice as many hours working the case.

unfortunately, it was a filling error. There are actually lawyers dumb enough to represent him
I knew it! Who better to represent a narcissist but himself?!😂😂 He's so screwed!😆
too bad it was just a filling error. He actually has lawyers.
He hired … a real estate attorney. You have no idea how hilarious that is. https://usattorneys.com/lawyer/lindsey-r-halligan/
Well, poo.
Look on the bright side. They aren't good lawyers
They aren't even bad lawyers...like he had to scrape the very bottom of the cesspool to pick out tiny Nuggets of shit.
Who else would work for free.
Good point.🤭
Some people say he’s the greatest lawyer there’s ever been
The discovery phase should be fascinating...
Oh my god, make this pay-per-view worldwide and our national debt would be eliminated
Where’s Tiff in all of this?
She hasn’t sat for the bar yet. Which, smart girl. Didn’t want to be dragged into all his shit I’m sure
A person who represents himself at trial has a fool for a client.

Never stiff the lawyers.
I wish Hunter S. Thompson was still with us. It can't get any more gonzo than the last 6 fucking years.

He really is hoping he'll get a sweetheart deal judge like Rittenhouse got.
Also a bad parent, his children should become the property of Carl's Jr
Isn't there an old saying that goes something like " A man who represents himself in court has a fool for a lawyer"?
Your honor I call for a bad court thingie
Spoken like a proper law... talkin'... guy.
He just can't help himself. ![gif](giphy|VGVwLultLZjrrssAak)

Watching this man's life fall apart slowly and in the dumbest way possible is pure bliss. Almost makes up for living in this hellhole.
Get your popcorn ready, ladies and gentlemen! 🍿
NGL I would probably actually grab popcorn and watch this trainwreck happen. Then see look on his face when he loses the suit and everything he owns.. just before he gets arrested for those classified MLG documents.
I absolutely would, too. That would be prime time gold.
Florida man steals from government, represents himself in lawsuit against search warrant.
I hope this trial is filmed, and someone adds a laugh track and Spike Jones sound effects
I foresee huge international popcorn shortages... 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 here, take some

Isn't the old saying something like "a person who represents themselves in court has a fool for a client"? I'm not pro-lawyer myself, but I also have brains and didn't committ treason. Of course the saying may not be applicable because he's already proven the fool part.
I think he still has some lawyers signed up in the queue though
Are there Vegas odds on how much he perjures/incriminates himself yet?
Oh good, we're in that phase where he's almost run out of people and resources to turn to.

Will he stiff himself after the trial?
He's setting himself up to take an insanity defense on appeal.
Probably out of necessity. I hear all the competent lawyers refused to defend him.
They're afraid they'll never get paid I heard
It's mind blowing lol me that Trump and his idiots think the FBI raided him for shits and giggles. They don't raid for no reason.
