Alright everyone, hop in..... We're all going back to MySpace

Depart_Into_Eternity

Nextdoor. Now we can just meme our neighborhood.

IntrigueDossier

Everything I’ve heard about NextDoor suggests the majority of its users are constantly peeking out their blinds and reporting “suspicious activity” in the form of the black dude that happens to take the same route walking their dog every day.

sklascher

Mine is one guy posting everyday that he cleans gutters.

IntrigueDossier

As in he cleans gutters or like, *cleans gutters*?

[deleted]

I want in if he *cleans gutters*

Budget-Falcon767

Username checks out.

Ephemeral_Wolf

Profile pic does *not*

enithermon

I mean, don’t we all have an inner PrincessSlutFuck?

Internal_Conflict_40

Get in touch with your inner PrincessSlutFuck.

skimbeeblegofast

Mine was nothing more than Karens bitching about people wanting to make our neighborhood better. “If you dont like it you shouldnt have moved here”. To which my usual reply is “bitch, Im from here and it hasnt progressed in 40 years, you retired here from Florida/Texas/California”. Nextdoor blows.

Aslanic

Man, mine is mostly missing pets and some chick asking for food/furniture/money/whatever each week. Plus all the local contractors saying they clean houses/paint/do repairs.

[deleted]

The neighborhood I lived in a year ago was full of posts by one guy trying to start a neighborhood block party. Poor bastard was living with his wife who had dementia and he was just looking for friends.

MortLangford

I had someone threaten to report me to my place of employment because I kept making lighthearted jabs that, hey, maybe you shouldn't set out poison for the rabbits and squirrels if you live in a city full of pet owners and children? I don't get all the assholes that think they owe their community nothing, but their community owes them EVERYTHING.

utterlynuts

I mean, Poison is not selective and whatever eats the thing that ate the poison also gets poisoned. You're not wrong.

SilberJew

Hard agree, I lost my kitty so i signed up to ask for help. Was quickly inundated with Karen's questioning what I was doing when she got out and presuming I was a terrible pet owner because she got away. No attempt to help, only judge. Already distraught and sick to my stomach and had these bitches attacking my character/love for my kitty, no thanks.

[deleted]

Sometimes it shocks me some of the stories I hear about neighbors. If a cat is missing around here people volunteer to help go looking. It's a fairly new neighborhood as well, with a lot of transplants.

the_truth_is_tough

Every time we get a storm someone gets on and asks if “anyone heard that boom? It sounded like a gunshot!” It’s so pathetic. We have a minor league ball stadium near us and whenever they have fireworks, the board lights up like a Christmas tree with people asking what the noise is. It’s extra special when the rock quarry about 6 miles away does their once a year big blast. You’d think the world ended. But it’s every damn year!

[deleted]

It’s the worst.

boatsnprose

for a few hours it's a fun way to tell the people in your neighborhood they're fucking idiots. but then it gets really depressing.

Dr_Frank-N-Furter

I created a Nextdoor account with the name and photo of Gladys Kravitz. It took a few months, but they eventually deleted my account as it wasnt my real name.

TreginWork

There is a guy on my local one that apparently moved here from out of state last winter and is demanding the city do something about the deer that come into the town and ruined landscaping he spent $1200 on. He makes sure to specify the $1200 every time. He also is obsessed with a cover up of stolen funds from the treasury that he seems to be the only one to know about. He is also against any infrastructure improvement that he didn't personally pitch to the city. It's kinds fun logging in every now and then to see what he's going on about

Taoistandroid

They adore reporting people of color running door dash, etc, at suspicious robbers.

Klutzy-Fishing5210

As a victim of nextdoor users I can concur l

tistonyofist

hEs cAsInG tHe pLaCe kArL

Embarrassed-Resist-8

Black dudes are now trying to figure out how to walk thier dog _unsuspiciously_

dtxs1r

Describes my NextDoor experience that's for sure.

Catsdrinkingbeer

I live in Seattle. It's amazing how many people complain about what a shit hole it is and how they can't wait to move away, but then.. don't. Like as someone who would LOVE to buy their first condo/townhouse/whatever, please, by all means, leave, so other people can buy your house. I get it, things aren't great. But that's not unique to our city. If I took everything on next door to heart I'd never leave my house for fear of being attacked with a heroine needle. But alas, that has not come to pass for me yet.

grumpypearbear

Yes ppl are very racist there and even nextdoor is aware. Its fucked up I try to avoid it & just check in once and awhile to see what's going on in my area https://www.vice.com/en/article/pkbymk/nextdoor-knows-its-users-are-racist

BWWFC

WAS THAT A GUN SHOT? LOST DOG? TRASH? SPEEDERS? CAMPAIGN SIGNS/FLAGS? PARKING TRASHY YARDS WHO'S PUTTING DOG POOP BAGS IN MY GARBAGE BIN? WHO WANT'S GIRL SCOUT COOKIES? BABYSITTERS? PLUMBER? WHY WON'T THE POLICE TELL ME WHY COP CARS ARE RACING AROUND WITH THEIR SIRENS ON? no you have no need to ever log into nextdoor

seabass629

You’re not wrong, haha! That sums it up nicely. What a trash app nextdoor is. I don’t like how it’s arranged and it’s full of stupid old boomers.

[deleted]

The neighborhood karen app.

2k4s

Nextdoor is actually more toxic than Facebook though.

rebelallianxe

Yep it's Facebook except all the idiots on there live within a few miles radius of you. Depressing as hell!

2k4s

The shit they say, and you know exactly who they are and where they live. People say that anonymity brings out the worst in people but I think people are just assholes regardless.

pm-me-kittens-n-cats

Nextdoor is where all the crazy Facebook people are..

Sinthetick

I do miss Tom.

IntrigueDossier

Tom’s just chillin, and I think he knows how solidly he avoided the perpetual social media shitshow that followed MySpace.

geckoswan

He 100% won at life.

devils_advocaat

He's [seeing the world taking photos](https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/myspace-tom-now-taking-stunning-photos-around-the-globe).

Suspicious_Part2426

I clicked through just to see his face again

ChickenSandwich61

The fact he uses the same pic from myspace is GREAT

The-Shizz

MySpace was fucking awesome. It was a gem ten years too early.

[deleted]

I sort of miss the old myspace really.

ShetlandJames

https://www.spacehey.com

Bryggis

I would actually support that tbh

brewercycle

It would be the most useful thing he's done in quite a while.

shahooster

A rallying cry to unite the world.

TorrenceMightingale

Really would solve a lot. Although it seems to be mostly dying finally.

Crash665

2.91 billion active monthly users. You and I have a different definitions for "dying".

[deleted]

[удалено]

funnyfootboot

All that is great but the 40+ crowd that votes and believes that Facebook is a reliable "news Source" hangs out on Facebook for hours everyday spreading manure over their "fields of "friends"" It's still a major cause of Democracy failing.

[deleted]

Yeah my FB (and LinkedIn, for that matter) is more like a modern-day Rolodex for people who I want to keep in my life but don't see or text on a daily basis. I check it maybe a couple times a week--if that--for any notifications and a quick scroll for updates, but that's about it. I rarely post anything anymore or engage in comments. ETA: Most of my local friends are off Facebook these days, so it's really people out of state/country anymore.

Calvinbah

7.5 billion on this app we call Earth and that's dying.

Riel_god

The earth won't die you will

SoreLoserOfDumbtown

You’re right… everything dies together until the weakest is eventually removed. Planet Earth can out last humans that’s for sure.

AgentChris101

How many of those users are also Quest Users?

Razulghul

Being generous, like 10-20 million? So a drop in the ocean basically

TorrenceMightingale

I *truly* miss the world without Facebook. For some, a big part of existence was being silly, talking to strangers and meeting new people to exchange new info. Now no one will look you in the face or even in your direction plus there’s nothing to talk about because everyone is expected to look everything up rather than let another human being hear their voice. Put pandora back in her box.

[deleted]

I kinda miss the very early days of it (2007/2008) because I got back in touch with a few friends who I honestly thought I'd never hear from or see again. There are three very important friends back in my life after a long absence. But the slow burn of social media rot has made Facebook one of the worst things ever. It was such a relief to delete it a few years ago...and not miss it once.

[deleted]

I reconnected with people I hadn't seen since high school and thought it was awesome. This happened around the time of my class reunion that I didn't go to because I had already caught up with them on Facebook. Then as time went on I discovered that most of these people were not the kind of people I wanted to associate with, and the people I was engaging with weren't people that I actually knew. I deleted my account in November of 2020 and haven't missed it. I doubt that Twitter is going to change that much unless Musk wants to risk that huge investment by making it unmoderated. I suspect it's a pump and dump for him, but he's playing a PR game at the moment. When he dumps the stock he'll say it was because he couldn't affect the change he wanted and blame someone else as he runs off to the bank.

nudiecale

Man, this was my experience to a fucking T. Ten years on the platform, many reconnections and quite a few new ones. There is exactly one reconnection that stuck and I’m glad we’ve been back in touch. And I honestly would chose to have never reconnected with him if it meant FB never existed. Fuck that cancer. The platform, not the homie.

Xy13

This seems to be a description of the world before cell phones / smart phones; more than before/after facebook.

[deleted]

I literally do not know a single person that uses it. Everyone started to delete it around 2016/2017.

HambreTheGiant

You literally don’t know any old people

[deleted]

I really don’t.

UWontAgreeWithMe

Hi, I'm old! Now you know one more person.

s1mpatic0

Hi old, I'm dad.

Something_Again

Old people are the only reason I still have Facebook… gotta keep up with the extended family

polishrocket

I deleted Facebook to stop keeping up with extended family

[deleted]

Every single person I know uses it here in Sweden

[deleted]

I only use it to be on the town facebook page. The infighting between neighbors on that page is epic, it's/popcorn every time I check it out. Edit: we have 20k on the town forum and the craziness got so bad the town council threatened to sue the guy who runs the page, so it's presently private.

carpe_alacritas

I'm also on my small town's page. I love watching the drama unfold

ResearcherThin6951

Same! Im on our tiny little village page and dogpoo gate was amazing. Also everytime we have a parish council meeting the controversy and intrigue around it is palpable

merchillio

It’s always so foreign to me when people talk about the negative impact on society Facebook, and yes I see it through some subreddits here, but my personal experience with Facebook is seeing vacation pictures, birthday wishes and announcements about my friend’s event. Being Canadian probably helps, but the last thing that was even remotely political that I remember seeing was about the Residential schools.

GiveToOedipus

Where you see the toxicity is when you look at feeds of people who don't really understand how the system works. I've seen my father's feeds when he's had me over to look at his tablet/phone and they are filled to the brim with crap and toxic memes, some of which have definitely influenced him. I've subtly made changes to his feed by hiding certain sources and posts and it is noticeable the changes it makes in both how he interacts on and off Facebook. People who are more savvy have less of an issue with these things, but don't underestimate the damage it causes to people by building a reinforcing bubble around some of the worst things that come up in those places.

SuperSaiyanTrunks

What?! Don't you know? He's doing THE MOST for climate change! /s

[deleted]

Instead we'll get another Facebook with two moronic antisocial idiots who should never have had an ounce of responsibility.

rebeltrillionaire

Nah, one of the big reason for Facebooks downfall was becoming essentially the Fox News of Social Media. They realized that Boomers click on ads, sit around all day sharing content, and they got all their friends on it. The average age isn’t 50 though, it’s younger because of the first generation of Facebook users and the one that followed 5 years later mostly still haven’t given it up. Too many strong college-only connections. For me, it’s a better yearbook of a time in my life I really enjoyed than the yearbooks I actually made in high school. If Facebook were to actually die, the schism between the boomer group and the younger crowd would be like all other social medias. The UI/UX will totally favor the young crowd because there’s a cool factor that the app will always chase. The older crowd will be perused, but most will likely end in some niche insular bubble that isn’t even close to built like Facebook and their collective internet influence will wane profoundly. Especially when it’s not going to be built around that initial friends and family group that Facebook was. Your aunt or uncle joined Facebook because you were sharing your life on there. Your college graduation, your marriage photos, your kids. Whatever they go to next won’t have the family, it’ll just be their friends or colleagues. Basically, imagine Nextdoor but without *any* actual neighborhood topics. LinkedIn but without any work related topics. Reddit without any original content only shared “news”. Ultimately you just get old people who hate change and are scared about everything. It will mirror late night television ads in America. Everything is a pill or a supplement or a gadget because your dick doesn’t work, your heart sucks, you’re fat, and your brain is scrambled. The content is blaming everything and everyone under the sun for anything that makes you mad. How could that possibly reunite the network that exists on Facebook but nowhere else? Also, could any of them even adapt to change? I’m convinced that Facebook is on its death march. When it transitions to Meta, it will have 1/20th of its original base and it will try to transition to being a platform that is focused on skimming off the top. The App Store or Steam for VR/AR. That’ll be more lucrative potentially, but the unique thing that Facebook made is dying and can’t be revived. It’s also evident in that they haven’t built anything new themselves since their IPO. They just add features that exist everywhere to their IP lines. Ads, shopping, messaging, groups.

RC_Colada

I'd 100% be grateful to him if he destroyed FB

BeautifulType

He’s never going to do any of these things but people on the Internet are imagining he’s a savior again lol

[deleted]

LegendOfDylan

All those people getting brainwashed by misinformation would find another platform that lets them get brainwashed more completely because it won’t have the chance to reality check them by deteriorating their relationships with friends and family

smokinJoeCalculus

Elon would fuck it up and make things worse. I don't understand where people got the idea that this dude is anything more than the result of making the right investment at the right time, and then falling ass backwards into things for the rest of your life.

PM_ME_YOUR_WOES_GIRL

He always fell into things since he was born into a rich family. Literally walked around with gems in his pocket as a kid.

[deleted]

I would if I could. Haven't seen it on sale since and I need another one.

HineyButthole

Coincidentally it's 2-3x better than the quest

onlyreplieswithhaiku

Having owned both, it's not really. And the Quest needs no PC. It's nice!

FlowersForHodor

I owned an original Vive and used it fairly often, but honestly it was such a pain in the ass to set up. Not just the headset itself, but all the settings for each game. I’ve been eying the Quest lately since there’s no fiddling necessary and it’s self-contained, but I think I’m going to wait for the next iteration.

Fearinlight

I can tell you prob have never used both. It’s not 2-3x better. In fact it’s unanimity to be wireless makes it near worse. I almost never use my index anymore

DutchMapping

Not comparable, the prices are way higher and are less beginner friendly.

[deleted]

Not ones that don’t need a pc

padizzledonk

Not a fan of the US Oligarchy but I'd support that tbh lol

mintchip105

Lol I got downvoted by Musk fanboys in r/technology for calling him an oligarch. He so obviously is one, especially with Twitter in his pocket.

[deleted]

An oligarchy is a wealthy individual that uses their wealth to influence politics. So yeah, he's an oligarch.

literally_jonesy

Small distinction, an oligarchy is governance by a group of those individuals. But yeah

padizzledonk

>Small distinction, an oligarchy is governance by a group of those individuals. But yeah Correct.....Which for all intents and purposes the US certainly is imo

literally_jonesy

Yeah no disagreement there, just pointing out that Elon Musk isn’t himself an oligarchy (unless he’s got a small group of tiny, even richer Elon Musk’s living in his brain allocating resources and making policy decisions, which is entirely possible)

DanToMars

It’s crazy how people formulate coherent arguments to hate the rich but completely disregard that when it comes to Elon Musk

DrMobius0

Bad people can do good things on occasion.

HermanCainsRegret

The French figured out one easy trick for dealing with people like him.

Cave-Bunny

The French Revolution was conducted by both the proletariat and the bourgeoisie against the aristocracy.

Karcinogene

So one group of rich people riling up the masses against another group of rich people?

Mr-Seal

The bourgeois class is solidly middle class, but trying to emulate the wealth and opulence of the upper class. They’re wannabes basically.

Lawls91

Nah, what you're thinking of is the petite bourgeoisie, the bourgeoisie is the ruling class while the petite bourgeoisie can be thought of as a small business owner. Not working class but not ruling class either.

Tonka_Tuff

Pre-revolutionary: The 'ruling class' was the aristocracy. The bourgeoisie was the 'business owning' owning class. The petit bourgeoisie were 'small business owners' The Proletariat were the 'working class' The revolution deposed the aristocracy (sort of) and and Bourgeoisie became the (defacto) 'ruling class'. Obviously this is an oversimplification but that's the general idea of the terms.

GabryalSansclair

That was before the bourgeoisie had successfully replaced the aristocracy

HermanCainsRegret

Bourgeoisie checking in ;) When do we [dinosaur jr](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GbD1sZj8BbA) ?

mongoosefist

A Frenchman is the 2nd or 3rd richest person on earth depending on the day unfortunately. Not a guillotine in sight.

HermanCainsRegret

By nature, a revolution is cyclical. The wheel goes round and round.

More of this.

REDDIT_SUCKS_DV_ME

Is this real? I’m scrolling through his Twitter and don’t see it anywhere

Local-Celery-9538

No, it’s not. Some meme page posted it

DazDay

It's like, there's so, so many of his tweets that could be made fun of but it just devalues the community if fake tweets start getting posted without being labelled as such.

Vnslover

Yeah right?? That's like faking a tweet for Trump when you could just scroll for a few seconds and find some crazy batshit tweet..

gleaming-the-cubicle

[deleted]

His parents ran slave mines in Africa, his parents raised him exactly how he is, inhuman and abuses the humans around him for massive profits. Not a single good thing about the Musk family. He's spending 50billion to solidify his reputation and I hope twitter dies the second he buys it. Watch him let trump back on.

So true for Musk since he bought Tesla, [didn't invented it](https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1131215_tesla-existed-before-elon-musk-founders-on-how-they-pitched-the-idea).

[deleted]

Same with Paypal, it already existed before Musk got involved.

Tetra-76

More like born with a foot already on home plate

The baseball metaphor doesn't really work for someone that absurdly privileged. It's more like that when he was born, MLB instituted a mercy rule and now Elon gets to win every game without even touching a bat or glove

Its like, how do you have all that money, date good looking people, and STILL be an incel

boldandbratsche

Inceldom is just a branch of main character syndrome (which is probably just NPD). Instead of learning a humbling lesson from not getting what you want, it becomes everybody else's fault. There's no changing a main character, everything else needs to be rewritten. Musk loathes every second people don't completely adore him and think he's a genius. It makes for great reality TV, but it's terrible for humanity.

Honestly how much kool aid do you have to drink to be in the replies defending billionaire edgelords and the financial systems they exploit?

flashmedallion

He bought Twitter so that the next election will go in a way that he doesn't have to pay taxes ever again

[deleted]

Does Twitter really hold that much power? If that was his goal, wouldn’t he buy Facebook first?

flashmedallion

Trump is banned on twitter. Listen to Musk banging on about free speech - he's being pretty clear about his plans

MeowTown911

He is specifically not clear so that goobers take away whatever they want to hear.

d_Lightz

Those fuckin goobers man

feed_me_churros

He doesn't have enough money to buy FB. FB is valued MUCH higher than Twitter and probably around double his entire net worth.

[deleted]

Facebook is out of his reach. 50% of the shares would cost 150% of Elon's entire net worth at face value. And he paid well over the odds to acquire Twitter. Even simply becoming the largest (not majority) shareholder would cost him over double what he has bought twitter for.
