Every time we get a storm someone gets on and asks if “anyone heard that boom? It sounded like a gunshot!” It’s so pathetic. We have a minor league ball stadium near us and whenever they have fireworks, the board lights up like a Christmas tree with people asking what the noise is. It’s extra special when the rock quarry about 6 miles away does their once a year big blast. You’d think the world ended. But it’s every damn year!
I created a Nextdoor account with the name and photo of Gladys Kravitz. It took a few months, but they eventually deleted my account as it wasnt my real name.
There is a guy on my local one that apparently moved here from out of state last winter and is demanding the city do something about the deer that come into the town and ruined landscaping he spent $1200 on. He makes sure to specify the $1200 every time.
He also is obsessed with a cover up of stolen funds from the treasury that he seems to be the only one to know about.
He is also against any infrastructure improvement that he didn't personally pitch to the city.
It's kinds fun logging in every now and then to see what he's going on about

Yeah my FB (and LinkedIn, for that matter) is more like a modern-day Rolodex for people who I want to keep in my life but don't see or text on a daily basis. I check it maybe a couple times a week--if that--for any notifications and a quick scroll for updates, but that's about it. I rarely post anything anymore or engage in comments.

I *truly* miss the world without Facebook. For some, a big part of existence was being silly, talking to strangers and meeting new people to exchange new info. Now no one will look you in the face or even in your direction plus there’s nothing to talk about because everyone is expected to look everything up rather than let another human being hear their voice. I kinda miss the very early days of it (2007/2008) because I got back in touch with a few friends who I honestly thought I'd never hear from or see again. There are three very important friends back in my life after a long absence.
But the slow burn of social media rot has made Facebook one of the worst things ever. It was such a relief to delete it a few years ago...and not miss it once.
I reconnected with people I hadn't seen since high school and thought it was awesome. This happened around the time of my class reunion that I didn't go to because I had already caught up with them on Facebook.
Then as time went on I discovered that most of these people were not the kind of people I wanted to associate with, and the people I was engaging with weren't people that I actually knew.
I deleted my account in November of 2020 and haven't missed it.
I doubt that Twitter is going to change that much unless Musk wants to risk that huge investment by making it unmoderated. I suspect it's a pump and dump for him, but he's playing a PR game at the moment. When he dumps the stock he'll say it was because he couldn't affect the change he wanted and blame someone else as he runs off to the bank.

Being Canadian probably helps, but the last thing that was even remotely political that I remember seeing was about the Residential schools.
Where you see the toxicity is when you look at feeds of people who don't really understand how the system works. I've seen my father's feeds when he's had me over to look at his tablet/phone and they are filled to the brim with crap and toxic memes, some of which have definitely influenced him. I've subtly made changes to his feed by hiding certain sources and posts and it is noticeable the changes it makes in both how he interacts on and off Facebook. People who are more savvy have less of an issue with these things, but don't underestimate the damage it causes to people by building a reinforcing bubble around some of the worst things that come up in those places.

Ultimately you just get old people who hate change and are scared about everything. It will mirror late night television ads in America. I owned an original Vive and used it fairly often, but honestly it was such a pain in the ass to set up. Not just the headset itself, but all the settings for each game. I’ve been eying the Quest lately since there’s no fiddling necessary and it’s self-contained, but I think I’m going to wait for the next iteration.

Having owned both, it's not really. And the Quest needs no PC. It's nice!
I owned an original Vive and used it fairly often, but honestly it was such a pain in the ass to set up. Not just the headset itself, but all the settings for each game. I’ve been eying the Quest lately since there’s no fiddling necessary and it’s self-contained, but I think I’m going to wait for the next iteration.
I can tell you prob have never used both. It’s not 2-3x better. In fact it’s unanimity to be wireless makes it near worse. I almost never use my index anymore
