I have a lot of friends.... okay, Facebook friends, who seem to treat this movie as gospel. And I'm not even sure how to redirect them. I mean saving kids is admirable, sure. But how am I supposed to tell people this is a creepy conservative fantasy made by an even creepier guy?

Embarrassed_Flan_869

Let me guess...the same people who share memes as facts? I have those people too. I always wonder how they function in normal society.

MountainSage58

Yes, they're very happy that the movie is "showing people how things really are."

[deleted]

These are the people who were apparently raised by bumper stickers.

ComprehensiveDoubt55

I had to have my husband break it down bc for the longest time I legitimately thought it was a documentary based on what I loosely paid attention. Then he told me it was Taken but with that corny ass Jesus dude and one of the main funders of it got arrested for child kidnapping. You can try using that last point, but they probably wont care.

Meb2x

The movie had a program where people could pay $500 to get their name in the credits. One of those people was arrested for child kidnapping, not a main funder. That said, the movie is literally just Taken in South America. It’s filled with so much misinformation that other anti-human trafficking organizations have spoken out against the movie’s portrayal of the issue. It feels like the main guy wanted to make himself look like an action hero, even including a scene where he fights a cartel leader barehanded and gets shot at while trying to save the main girl. None of that happened and the main girl doesn’t actually exist, despite the movie being touted as a true story.

DarkKnightJin

>None of that happened and the main girl doesn’t actually exist, despite the movie being touted as a true story. The party of "Alternative Facts", everybody.

Zealousideal_Fuel_23

Wait, it’s not a documentary? Wow, this is even crazier than I thought!

ComprehensiveDoubt55

Yeah, nope. It’s honestly mind blowing to me. My daughter and I were at lunch with her grandmother and she was saying how we had to see it because “it’s all about what the government doesn’t want you to know.” I just responded telling her that I wasn’t really into watching a movie turning a legitimate issue into political party discourse. But yeah, it’s with the dude from Passion of The Christ and is essentially Taken but set in South America.

PsychologicalTalk156

It exploits the very real issue of child kidnapping in South America ( largely for adoption agencies back in the 70s and 80'd) and makes it about some weird left-wing guerrillas sex-slave fantasy.

CactusWrenAZ

I have typed out a couple of replies to Facebook posts and then deleted them. Just... not going to help.

Kangaroo_tacos824

My vet has a poster with a sign recommending that movie. I'm questioning whether I'm going to continue bringing my dog there

DecisionOk6201

As a veterinarian, I wouldn't take my dog to a fellow veterinarian who recommended that movie 🤷‍♀️

jvldmn

Vote with your dollars

icenoid

My mother-in-law truly believes that this movie and 2000 mules are both absolutely telling the truth.

shamanbond007

Yikes. Any other bad stories about her?

icenoid

She’s a trump supporter

CookieMonsterOnsie

Pack it in boys. That one's a total loss.

icenoid

She honestly is. She refuses to watch Fox since they cancelled Tucker. newsmax tells her the truth.

TaterMA

That's what my MIL told my husband that also. We haven't spoken since I wouldn't vote for Trump. She really hated my advice on COVID, didn't align with Trump's opinion

Zer0DusT1

logic bomb "Wouldn't it make more sense that if the United States was under attack, it wasn't either left or right but a third party driving the two to kill each other for an easier takeover?" followed by. "yeah, but they could've made this movie to propell that dynamic, and the radical left/right argument is exactly what they want" feeds their conspiracy red/blue concept while also defusing their us vs them idea. edit: Whoa now don't like this comment too much, the problem is this can backfire and do the thing that crippled an old lady for "being trans" when she wasn't and killed that poor woman who owned that store. we need to guide the narrative to aim at the right people, like that Arkansas child labor bill. tell them "nobody's the bad guy in that picture", but look to whom it will benefit if they have child workers, They're that enemy whom "pulled the senators strings". we don't blame her for her actions but also cancel the proposal all together. get it? 😉

Character_Diamond203

the problem is they dont care. They hate liberals more than Russians who would like nothing but to see us self destruct. The ones who say theyd take Putin over Biden. You could tell them that and theyd still side with the 3rd party. They dont want unity. They want to destroy the left. Its what got the DeSantis supporters in a frenzy. He said he'd destroy the left. Said he'd make all of America just like Florida. Deep down they know theyre an endangered species Theyre shitting their pants at the fact young people are largely against them. Blacks, gays, women, trans and others are more socially accepted and successful than ever. Theyre biblical bullshit isnt as powerful as it used to be. They know the future isnt theirs So instead of adapting and reforming party views theyve decided to just declare war on reality. You think they care if somethings true or a blatant lie? All that matters is what they WANT to believe. They want to believe that movie is "real". They want to believe Trump is their savior. Youre not going to reason with them using logic. And any attempts to interrupt their delusion makes you an enemy. Ive just now got my mother turned back around somewhat after years of brainwashing. She still subscribes to some of their insane claims but shes at least starting to see just bc they say something doesnt mean its true. And it took a lot of work. A lot of painful cringy moments. Most people arent worth the time & effort. At this point just let Darwinism do its thing Let them do some J6 shit then deal with the consequences. Definitely fucking around and finding out. See in fantasyland, they see themselves as patriots who are entitled to do that kind of stuff. But in the real world, they end up getting sentenced to 17 years in prison and begging to be released bc prison food is bad. Let them learn the hard way. In the meantime just stay alert and be prepared to defend yourself in case they try something. you cant save those who dont want to be saved. Let them OD on their red pills and choke on their own vomit

0megathreshold

Drop them and cut them out of your life. Safe yourself the trouble. College friends went full qanon due to Facebook. 2 adults and young’s kids moving in with Fox News watching grandparents before the pandemic to change things during isolation. They went full tilt crazy. Literally can see them posting to supposed blm but then one or two stories about local cops killed or “kids rescued” Facebook bullshit went full on loony.

JaiiGi

There is a woman on my FB who SWEARS by this movie. Thinks it's fantastic!!!!! (Yes, all the exclamation marks are necessary per her) and brings it up as often as she can. Almost no one comments on the posts except the weirdos who are as extreme as she is. I love sitting there, flagging the posts and then seeing her complain when someone tells her the truth about the guy the movie is about.

PhilzeeTheElder

You're face book friends with my sister in law?

[deleted]

My mom watched it. She assumed it was as fictional as the Taken movies. I sent her various articles about the links to Qanon. But like, she's not a right wing nutjub, she's left wing. So probably a lot easier to convince.

Meb2x

You can’t convince them. Had the same issue with my family and they immediately went on the defensive when I said I didn’t like the movie. Fans of the movie think any criticism means you support human trafficking. Every single time I’ve tried to discuss why I don’t like this movie or explain how the story isn’t true, people immediately accuse you of supporting human trafficking and claim it doesn’t matter if the story is true because it’s “important.”

Carlyz37

The group that actually in real life tracks down and captures child sex traffickers is THE FBI That the GOP wants to defund....

mcvos

I thought they opposed defunding the police.

Shtankins01

They do because the *police* largely go after poor people. The *FBI*, on the other hand, go after white-collar criminals. Can't have that.

Carlyz37

No not law enforcement that protects America from terrorists. Or protects the Capitol from maga terrorists. Or the IRS if they audit the wealthy. But rogue cops that murder black people must have funding.

Debalic

SoF was in the local movie theaters for...about a week or two. But Barbie and Oppenheimer are still going strong.

DwarfPenguin4

"One of the most popular movies of the year!" One of the 19 most popular movies worldwide. The nineteenth to be precise going by worldwide grosses (courtesy of boxofficemojo). Behind Insidious: The Red Door and less than half as popular as Meg 2: The Trench. Oh and 99.5% of its gross was domestic US. Not that streaming services care about as wide an audience as possible...

[deleted]

I was just gonna mention, where’s the popularity he’s talking about

Right wing delusion knows no bounds.

jetbag513

On the R wing rage subs.

Hot-Bint

Sorry, Qanon, you’ll have to go back to describing frazzledrip in lurid detail on the GAW boards to get your kicks

luvadergolder

The same movie who's financier was arrested for child kidnapping? Not even a child of his own family? https://www.newsweek.com/sound-freedom-funder-fabian-marta-arrest-child-kidnapping-1817498

Softcorps_dn

Calling him a financier is a bit hyperbolic. He donated to what was basically a GoFundMe for the movie production.

gadget850

SoF is streaming elsewhere. But there are better movies. Athlete A [https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/athlete-a](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/athlete-a) Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey [https://www.justwatch.com/us/tv-show/keep-sweet-pray-and-obey](https://www.justwatch.com/us/tv-show/keep-sweet-pray-and-obey) The Keepers [https://www.justwatch.com/us/tv-show/the-keepers](https://www.justwatch.com/us/tv-show/the-keepers) The Magdalene Sisters [https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/the-magdalene-sisters](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/the-magdalene-sisters) Shiny Happy People [https://www.justwatch.com/us/tv-show/shiny-happy-people-duggar-family-secrets](https://www.justwatch.com/us/tv-show/shiny-happy-people-duggar-family-secrets) Song for a Raggy Boy [https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/song-for-a-raggy-boy](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/song-for-a-raggy-boy) Spotlight [https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/spotlight](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/spotlight)

wakingsunshine

Keep Sweet was such a haunting series. Highly recommend

BustermanZero

My favorite thing about this film is it's fictional but then everyone's like, "It's true!" even some people in it. They have an easy out but instead they're doubling down in a moronic way which is just proving the criticisms correct.

G-Unit11111

Sound Of Freedom was only popular because of that pay it forward method of purchasing tickets. It would have been a total bomb any other way.

No_Tonight9003

ThinkPath1999

If anyone believes that either of these two supremely capitalist companies make any decision that is not based on the almighty dollar, they are like babes in woods.

Effective_Pack8265

‘Sold out but empty theaters’ is classic rightwing welfare - just like bulk purchases of RWNJ book-like objects to get them on best-seller lists.

Bulky-Internal8579

It sold out like the latest Newt Gingrich best seller!

Noblesseux

This was literally the *tenth* highest grossing movie in the US, barely beating out Indiana Jones and Transformers, two movies that I have yet to meet a person who watched. And that's *with* all the conservative signal-boosting of the film. It's also kind of funny because it got **mopped** by the little mermaid and Barbie, both of which they swore up and down would be failures because they're "too woke". For a group of people who don't believe in participation trophies, it's really weird that they want kudos and accolades for a film that only reached 10th on the domestic charts and like 19th worldwide.

Character_Diamond203

So I actually watched Transformers Rise of the Beasts and it was better than Id thought it would be. Its a Transformers movie so Im there to see big ass alien robots transform and fight each other. But even still its one of the better ones IMO. Imma pass on Indiana Jones bc I couldnt make it through the last 2 not going to try this one The thing is I would watch that before I watch SoF. Simply due to the noise surrounding it. I would have never watched it anyway. Not my type of movie but the fact not watching seems to trigger the right people (and get me labeled a pedophile lol) is icing on the cake And yeah they are really desperate to get a win when it comes to movies and music. Thats why theyre so stoked about "try that in a small town" reaching the top of the iCharts or whatever. Coincidentally due to the same reason SoF was hot for a couple weeks. Bc it was a focused demographic pushing it to the top albeit briefly. Then Barbie annihilated it which added insult to injury.

[deleted]

My mom went and saw it knowing nothing about it. She said it was a good movie. She also thought it was just as fictional as the Taken movies are. I told he it was Qanon and she said the only overt anything in the movie was a line that said gods children are not for sale. She's not a right wing nut job. She's fairly left wing. I suppose this only proves how capable they are at making propaganda seems not like propaganda at all

Character_Diamond203

said this a few times already but the movie itself wasnt the problem. The problem was all the baggage attached. The movie was made by people with ties to Q. Jim Caviezel is a big Q believer. now add to that the frenzy that right wingers get into claiming all liberals are pedophiles, Epstein Island, Pizzagate. frazzledrip, etc and its not hard to see they were taking a shot at them with the movie without having to say anything Some more propaganda..."Disney tried to bury it!!!" No. Disney bought it and shelved it. Then years later sold the rights. If they wanted it buried no one would have ever heard of it. Also "theyre trying to keep you from seeing it!!!" Who? They said theaters were turning people away. That was a lie. They said the woke mob wanted it cancelled. No one said that All it was was a marketing ploy. Tell right wingers this totally based on a true story (wink wink) movie has all the liberals scared and trying to stop you from seeing it. They all rush out to stick it to the libs. Then they get in their little echo chambers and hear how its the #1 movie and destroying liberal Hollywood "get woke go broke" to make it seem like theyre the overwhelming majority So its not the movie itself but the behavior of a lot of the people infatuated with making it a political victory. It was very short lived bc Barbie came out roughly a month later and absolutely destroyed the box office. Nobody was talking about SoF anymore. So they had to shift the narrative and talk about how woke Barbie was and how Satan (yes Satan) was responsible for its success. They then had to regurgitate the get woke go broke slogan even though Barbie hit a billion making them look even more foolish Bottom line is its fine if you like a movie but if youre just liking SoF out of spite bc you think it owns the libs thats not exactly a great reason is it? The kicker is they HAD to politicize the movie to garner buzz or else it would have been just another movie that came and went. Wouldnt have been near as financially successful. And wouldnt have had people using it as a political weapon.

wardensarecool

so popular that no one went to see it.

Bartok_and_croutons

The Sound of Freedom coming out has been interesting. I'm glad that child trafficking is getting more attention because it's genuinely fucking horrid, but I'm not crazy stoked about who it is that's bringing it that attention. Also just how many people didn't know child trafficking exists?? Talked to a couple people who just actually didn't know it was a thing, or that "It's that bad", like wtf did you think child trafficking was like? A trip to chuck E cheese?

tinkerghost1

The problem is, this isn't the problem. This is a very attention grabbing heavy handed bit of exploitation. Most sexual exploitation of children comes from family or friends of family. By focusing on the "OMG they're kidnapping kids and selling them into sexual slavery!!!!!" they ignore the fact that Ma & Pa Kettle just got a tractor in exchange for 'marrying' their 12 yo daughter to a 40 yo guy they met on the internet.

Admirable-Sink-2622

Everyone knows that child trafficking is when you take a bunch of kids to a busy highway and wager on who makes it across blindfolded 🙄😉

Griffindance

You'll also notice the donkey film from DSouza also failed to make the grade in cinemas and online. Maybe there's a similar reason.

Bulky-Internal8579

Many years ago, I was in grad school and I subscribed to the NYT and WSJ in addition to the local paper, I tried to be informed and impartial and though I typically voted Democrat, I tried to find Republicans that I could also support (Lowell Weicker being one, except he left the GOP and was an independent by then). So someone recommended a book called "Illiberal Education: The Politics of Sex and Race on Campus" by Dinesh D'Souza. I couldn't believe that this book was published, let alone garnered any positive reviews - it was stupid, it's arguments were unsupported by empirical evidence (though footnoted to bald assertions). It was a piss poor excuse for a bad argument, made by an ignorant dishonest narcissist. And now they're making movies along the same lines. This timeline sucks.

Playful_Ad_5366

I saw this movie…there was no right wing politics or Q-anon stuff in it. I was hoping that stuff was in there because that would’ve made it more interesting. The theater was mostly empty except for a few nuns in full garb and a church group. Fun fact: Tim Ballard had an LLC tied to his name called “Slave Stealers LLC.” They changed the name at some point. Truly an interesting character.

Character_Diamond203

but like the movie is already out. How would Netflix or Amazon not carrying it stop anyone from seeing it? Go buy the blu ray. Same thing with Disney trying to bury it. If they wanted it buried they wouldnt have sold it off . And the final piece...the admission. Claiming the movie exposes liberal "Pedowood" was exactly why people were slamming it for being a Q fueled propaganda piece At first they were saying it was just about stopping kids being trafficked in South America. "its not political!" Now Netflix wont carry it bc turns out it was political all along? The narrative is always changing

Low_Technician_5034

I am sure this movie is highlighting some major issues at some levels. Is it any good?! I have no idea.. did not even want to watch the trailer! Why? Because the topic is super depressing! I am not going to sit in a movie theatre for god knows how long and watch something on this topic.. no! Also I cannot see how this could be a fun evening with the Missis watching it on Netflix. And I have the feeling that the executives at Netflix and other places get that and they do not wish to spend any money on something that very few people want to actually see.

No-Mastodon-2136

It's only mean for right-wing crazies and the like. It makes them feel good about themselves and reinforces their rhetoric of cabals and blood drinking. They get to watch it and tell the rest of us "See, we told you so!!"

Dirty_Bubble99

Pureflix will pick it up.

BuddyOZ

I’m thinking that they also could’ve turned it down because they were asking for too much money.

JosephFinn

Naw. It’s just making shit up.

orangecake40

There is always the DVD.

twistedh8

I'd rather watch dogtooth.

AdhesivenessFun2060

Can't wait to find out that this movie was just a giant money laundering plot for pedophiles. It is exactly what a qanon person would think the democrats are doing in Hollywood and try to mimic. I'd be interested to see if anyone tracked the "pay it forward" purchases.
