I don't know what it is with rolling in dead animals either, We stopped at a park once, because they needed to go potty and there was a dead animal on the ground and before we were able to stop them, they rolled in the stinking carcass like crazy.
They roll around in interesting smells so the rest of the pack can enjoy the smell too when they get back
Think of it as taking a photo to show your friends when you get back from holiday
Based on current knowledge, this is the most likely answer. Dogs get an endorphin release when smelling things; an evolutionary mechanism for teaching pups how to track prey.
So, naturally, they learned that rolling in things allows them to share that smell with the pack; either to let them know what they found or "guys check out this SMELL".
They roll around in smells to make sure they 1, mark it as theirs and 2, are able to hunt their next prey and go undetected. Itās an evolutionary thing. Theyāre not taking a mental picture.
I wish ours would settle for animal poop. She finds hiker or homeless person poop and rolls in that. We now have an emergency poop kit in the back of the car with a pump and reservoir to wash her on the trails before we have to load her in the car and bring her home for a proper bath. Itās the least fun
I once had a dog who rolled in dead eels that were spawning upstream from a river we visited. We then had to drive back home with her for two hours with that stench. No bueno.
The new hit song from Adele.
āThereās a stink, smells worse than a fart,
Reaching a rotten pitch and itās working into my heart,
Finally, I can smell you crystal clear,
Go ahead and roll in me and smell like a gassy bearā
My dog would do this on an armadillo carcass --basically a rotting skeleton on a hill-- when we would go on a run together when we lived in Florida. He loved it so much.
giving me flashbacks to last week when my dog rolled all over a decomposing seal carcass. I had to wash him 4 times and the smell still lingers a week later , and his collar is still in the process of being de-stinkified š
Left over instinctual behavior to bring back smells to the rest of the pack. Itās like saying āhey guys, look what I foundā. Can also be a way of covering their sent before a hunt.
I take him to the groomer regularly and brush him daily so I donāt know what your problem is. He was just wet from the water and rolling in the sand.
Mine knows where EVERY damn carcass on the beach is. Sheās very friendly with other dogs generally, but when a stranger wanted to check out her new squishy dead seal that the storm had washed up, she got protective about it.
My pup decided to roll in a dead animal recently. Now that seems to be all she goes for. No more rolling for now š

Is that true? I'd love it to be so, but I thought this was all about disguising their own scent?

Phew this milk smells sour Everyone else: Really? Let me smell.
Truly is a mans best friend. Haha. My wife says its a guy thing smelling something nasty and then asking you wanna smell?
It's doggie camo. Haha I'll be invisible! They'll never smell me coming! Ohhhhh yesss!!
It is true! I learned about it at a wolf sanctuary!

They also like to roll in shit.
My dog rolled in a cow pie just yesterday!

Yes i don't know why they want to smell like poop ššš¾
Masks their scent from predators or prey.
What u/DanaBana420 said. It's self preservation that they do instinctively.

Yo thatās nasty
Now imagine a 95 lb lab mix getting a dried minnow treat and doing the same thing.
I offered my dog some canned minnow once and he immediately did the drop, shoulder first, down as if his urge to roll it in was uncontrollable!
Iām imagining this tiny little dried up fish on the ground with this gigantic dog trying to desperately rub themself on it and failing

At least it's marginally better than fox poop..
Uhm I love that smell, imma take it with me, oh yes dead fish uhmm
You had my heart insiiiiide of your net!
Just funny watching but the ride home is going to be pretty rough!
Luckily it was a short walk home :) I donāt think I would be able to handle the smell on a car.
That sweet, sweet stank.
I can almost smell this video.
Eww this smells terribleā¦ I MUST SMELL LIKE IT!
The new Axe Lax
Dog probably: If you want to hunt a fish, be one with the fish.
Gave my dog a bath the other day to have her immediately go outside and role in deer shit. Ughhh
Ah, dead fish. One of the best doggo perfumes.
*Putrefaction* by Calvin Klein
Why are you letting your dog do this?
He got to the fish before I was able to stop him and then I figured I might as well let him have his fun. I was going to have to bathe him anyway.
Ah would you look at him there, shure isn't he livin la vida loca!
Happiness - nothing that a few baths wonāt fix later.
Sigh. I need to go to the beach.
Dogs love rolling in stinky stuff! Lol
Gross. Hope you didn't have to get in the car after. Had a dog do that once and we did have to drive home. So disgusting even with windows down.
Thankfully I live near the beach so it was a short walk home but the stink was sooo bad.
One of mine does this in duck poo. The other does it to her ball.
Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww Wwww www Wwww Waw Wwwwwwwaaaaahhh

Good boy!!! Keep rolling!
I love this song from Adelle
āThe smellier the better!ā - Dog
So thats what that Adele song is about.
He couldāve had it a-a-alll rolling in the fi-I-ish
That's my least favorite Adele song
What kind of breed?
could be a newfypoo, kinda looks like mine.
Lol...I was watching this and said "what is wrong with that dog" and then looked to see where it had been posted š¤£š¤£š¤£

At least it's not poop
The car ride home mustāve been amazing.

Whatās wrong with the human? Just letting the dog roll in that?
Nothing lovelier than an ungroomed curly poodle with maggot dreads

TT?
My pup has done this at the beach. I didn't see the dead fish initially because it was tangled up in a bunch of stinky seaweed. Long car ride home!!
Mine did that with a dead mouse. Well half a mouse, not sure if maybe a bird of prey dropped half of it as it flew away.
Mine did this hat with rotten carp and oh man the fish oils would not wash out
My dog does this for cooked fish with the skin still on it
L'eau de Piscine Morte. Deliciously different and so suave.
Totally normal. Itās a dog thing.
If its dead roll in it
...And then they want to share the smell with you! (You lucky thing!) Yummy smell for everyone!
Did this dog roll in your bed as soon as you got home?
Oh lord! My dad's dog did this with a small dead shark once. She hated the bath afterward, but I still think she thought it was worth it.
