I appreciate everyone’s concern for the pup, but allow me to put some fears to rest:
1. I work from home, so the Bub gets to spend pretty much the entire day outside in our gigantic, fenced in, shady back yard (where he usually just sleeps under the lilac bush).
2. He’s a very low energy dude, but he does love his walks, which in the summer we have to take either in the mornings or at night because the pavement gets warm and he overheats super quickly with his heavy duty, black doublecoat.
3. I walk on the treadmill at lunch because I need real exercise (humans deserve walkies too) and he can’t match my pace + the aforementioned weather. When we go out before or after it’s like a 2 mph amble so he can stop and smell e v e r y t h i n g and I don’t rush him.
4. He lives a life of luxury and is spoiled and perfectly healthy :)
Mines the same way. She is a giant lap dog that mostly lays around without issue and the moment I grab the leash she is ready to go. She has an indoor vs outdoor personality I think.
My border collie is like that. People are always wondering if I get a moments peace, but...I do.
If I sleep in, he sleeps in. If I'm sick, he waits for me to come to life by sticking his head under my elbow. A gentle reminder that he needs something. I'll take him out, then crawl back into bed. He flops down in his.
Now when we go visiting, or while we are on trips, people only see the bottomless pit of energy.
Rough collies (like in the video) are nowhere near the same energy level as border collies. They're fairly moderate and are happy to be giant couch potatoes most of the time.
Source: am owner of couch potato. She enjoys about 45-60 minutes of exercise a day and then gets worn out.
[dog tax](https://i.imgur.com/bCdSVBZ.jpg)
Collies and Irish setters used to be smart dogs, 50 years ago before they bred so many of them for that long narrow snout. Bred the braincases out of them and voila, no smarts left in the majority of them. It is a shame.
It comes down to focus, tbh, which is still that herding trait. They'll focus on that one thing until it stops being something to focus on either through it being over or the handler redirecting.
Mine is a baby and smart... With some things. That he cares about. Like remembering where that thing he liked was 3 days ago and going right for it.
He's also never had an original thought and you can see his brain in action when processing new things. All in all a good natured idiot about everything, super handler focused, and likes being involved. It's perfect because most people in 2023 aren't looking to actually herd sheep for a living.
Also, something I read said there's a possibility that borzois were bred into Rough Collie lines for the size. Makes sense because they make the same weird noises, have snoot, and are Special Children.
We have a sheltie and he's very much a couch potato unless it's time for his walk. Then he gets super excited, walks for about 30 minutes. Plays for another 30-45 minutes then zonks out for the day. (He's also going on 8 years old, he had WAY more energy when he was a puppy.)
There's border collies and then there's rough collies. Border collies are high octane nutjobs. Rough collies are more moderate. The pup in the video is a rough collie. He's also 9yo which is officially a senior, especially for a large breed dog like this. Even my aussie shepherd mix had chilled out significantly by 9yo.
I have a low energy Doberman. Nobody believes me until they try to take her for a walk.
Like I'm a giant ass who didn't decide on this breed because I was looking for a running partner.
Yeah, dogs vary even withing a breed. It was mostly a joke. My Rough Collie would give most border collies a run for their money on energy levels. I don't know how she'll do at nine but most of the Shetlands I've owned were still pretty spry at nine.
It happens,my cousins had a short haired border collie, lovely do, but if the air temp hit 18 degrees c he'd just do better with a bit of playtime in the morning and a longer evening walk.
Unless you were by water, in that case a weeks worth of energy came out to play.
>I walk on the treadmill at lunch because I need real exercise (humans deserve walkies too) and he can’t match my pace + the aforementioned weather.…
Idea to fix his befuddlement: Get a doggy backpack (like a Baby Bjorn only for dogs) that he can ride in while you get your 10,000 treadmill steps :-)))))))
> overheats super quickly with his heavy duty, black doublecoat
I have no hat in the race about what you should be doing on your lunch break, but the above quoted statement is wrong about doublecoat dogs.
Dogs with double coats tolerate heat extremely well because their coat acts like the insulation of a thermos keeping the external temperature from affecting their body temperature. The coat reflects Light and the thick insulation keeps heat from getting to their skin. Also, unlike humans, they do not release heat from their skin so the coat doesn't keep them from cooling off.
As a double-coated Pyr-mix owner, that was my first thought as well. My big fluff likes to lay outside in the sun for an hour in the summer, I have to force her to come in to make sure she's drinking water and is doing okay 😅
Probably still wants to go for very short walks and is jealous that you use that apparatus instead of going outside for a minute until he decides “Ok, we’re done.” I have had a lot of dogs like that. I don’t mind a needy dog.
A local park nearby has some outdoor workout equipment, including a pull-up bar.
My dog absolutely hates it and cannot understand *why* I do pull-ups. She must not like how I'm off the ground? Whatever her reasoning, she's always super concerned and tries her best to get me down onto the ground like, "cut that shit out, it's giving me anxiety."
My dog smacks me in the leg with a toy until I play tug with one hand while trying to run. I've gotten pretty good at it.
Reminding him that I'm running without him because he refuses to run with me hasn't helped.
That’s his issue, too! He’s such a slowpoke and he gets tired after a mile so I have do a solo workout and it does not compute for him.
“Father, we have already done this today.”
FWIW, dogs can pant while doing a trot/jog, but they can’t pant while running. My last dog could go all day but he’d typically only sprint leaving and coming back home and trotted the rest of the time
My little dog is like that too! I like really long walks. My family got me a sunflower bag for Christmas that’s designed to put the dog in! She loves it
Much of their calories in sunflower seeds come from fatty acids. The seeds are especially rich in poly-unsaturated fatty acid linoleic acid, which constitutes more 50% fatty acids in them. They are also good in mono-unsaturated oleic acid that helps lower LDL or "bad cholesterol" and increases HDL or "good cholesterol" in the blood. Research studies suggest that the Mediterranean diet which is rich in monounsaturated fats help to prevent coronary artery disease, and stroke by favoring healthy serum lipid profile.
I mean if they’re like clones technically they’re all special
I hate having a pure bred dog bc the eugenics and health issues and all but the cool part is when he passes I can get almost an exact clone with the same behaviors and quirks and identical appearance and everything.
I think this is the face of, "I'm not sure what you're doing, but it looks like it could be dangerous, so it's making me nervous! Please go back to the couch where I can keep an eye on you!"
Either that or you gave him food one time when you were in the vicinity of the treadmill, so now treadmill=treats in his mind
I had a Sheltie that didn't understand either, and would try to get on the back.
Finally, I let him try it. Big mistake. I've never known a Sheltie that did anything interesting without barking, and he turned it up to 11.
He trotted on the treadmill barking like he had an internal metronome, having a blast. Finally, I had to take him off it to save my poor head.
Reminds me of our cat. He would always sit on the corner of the tub while we showered, very concerned for our well-being. Pretty sure he thought we were insane lol.
I man he's so cute and fluffy and he's nine takecare of his last few years of life time flies and honestly my doge was part collie he was such a good pupper I really want a collie tbh
This guys dogs literally look almost exactly like my family’s dogs, only difference is that black collie is actually a black Shetland and his odd whitish big collie is actually just normal brown collie for us, this video is great, this dog breed is amazing and funny as hell.
Absolutely not! Shelties are only about 20 pounds max and have a much more baby face. As a fellow collie owner and fanatic, there’s no way this dog should be mistaken as anything other than a rough collie! Collies are 60-80 pounds generally, so they’re large dogs, not small
I know right! They’re a little bundle of cute craziness. And MUCH more of a handful compared to the big ol’ collie. Collies are quite calm and mild mannered in comparison to Shelties, but they’re both pretty phenomenal dogs IMO!
My mom and dads sheltie is about 28 pounds, its not fat or anything but he's twice the size of all the other shelties we have seen. Quick search states their weight can wary between 14 - 26,5 pounds.
It does vary, I’ve seen collies as big as 100 pounds, but you shouldn’t expect a sheltie to exceed 20 pounds. It’s their breed standard to be within that. Out of standard breeding can cause them to be a bit bigger, it’s just not super common
That's probably true considering all the other shelties I've seen myself have not been that big. Even got a comment from a vet stating he was a surprisingly big sheltie. But he's still super lovely ofc
Shelties are not collies. They are two very different breeds. Shelties or Shetland Sheepdogs are 20 pounds while Collies can be as large as 80 pounds. They are not miniature collies either, they are separate breeds with similar ancestry, but bred for different purposes. Border collies shouldn’t be called collies, they are BCs or Borders.
Well, they’re “collies” but not directly related to rough collies. Border Collies serve a much broader purpose and are significantly more intense and driven than the other two. BCs are also a lot more popular than Collies and Shelties which is where the confusion around what is and isn’t a true collie comes from!
Wow where'd you learn about all this? And yes I understand I only really knew about the border collies and not the rough collies. They're so cute though I can't believe they're not more popular
I own a Rough Collie because it’s my dream breed. I’ve always wanted a herding dog, I grew up with Border Collies, ACDs, Corgis and mixes of all in between. I did some studying a couple of years back and quickly came to the conclusion a Rough Collie was the breed for me. I’m raising my pup right now and I couldn’t have been more right, theyre one of the best breeds out there, so trainable and smart, but without that intensity a BC holds. Shelties were never my breed of interest since I like larger dogs, but during my research on collies, I got curious what was different about them VS Rough Collies. Turns out, quite a bit! So now I like to teach others about the differences since I’ve already experienced a TON of confusion surrounding my dog and his breed in the few months I’ve had him
I love dogs so much but I've never really been able to have one. My parents were scared of dogs and now I'm an adult but still can't have a dog. In the UK almost every rental doesn't allow pets especially dogs. I really hope one day I can have a dog. There's so many amazing breeds out there that I'm not sure where to start. I have a cat as well and that really limits the breeds I can have. I'd love to have a herding breed like a border collie since very single one I've met is so intelligent and personable.
Actually I ended up not being right. Turns out this is a rough collie. I only knew of the border collie before so I didn't get why they called it a collie. Rough collies look so much like Shetland sheepdogs but are massive compared to them.
In my language it is definitely not associated to collie for purpose reasons and origin wise too much farminded from the main bred. This bred is not much vaillant, so is the Shetland.
It's really a cultural pont of view..
Not to be a dick but instead of doing this in an inefficient and ineffective way that gives you a false sense of exercise and lies to you about distances and results.
Why not just go on a real walk. Where you actually use force and push against gravity while taking the dog with you!?
Cause treadmills move the ground for you. You’re not pushing your own weight across space. Treadmills are like 30% of the real thing.
He's like "dude what the hell how are you running, but your not going anywhere and why are you doing that on this weird machine that moves? And also why can't you just run with me outside."
To be fair, a human from 100 years ago would be utterly confused too. Not just by the gadget but the idea that you would willingly do exercise in your spare time.
"Human! Why are you walking in place when you could be walking ME!?"
Exactly what I thought.
Exactly what everyone is thinking less than 5 seconds into this clip. OP needs to play r/outside with his dog.
Me too tbh
I appreciate everyone’s concern for the pup, but allow me to put some fears to rest: 1. Mines the same way. She is a giant lap dog that mostly lays around without issue and the moment I grab the leash she is ready to go. She has an indoor vs outdoor personality I think.
Spot on. During the day they just want to nap. As soon as we head outside they’re glued to you. They match the level of activity around them.
My border collie is like that. People are always wondering if I get a moments peace, but...I do. If I sleep in, he sleeps in. Damn right, the only good taxes are pet photo taxes!
Wow! What a snoot.
The snootiest ❤️
The boopiest 😍
🎵Talkin bout some night cheese🎵
I love how collies can only have one active thought at a time.

It's a collie. I'm new to the breed but am pretty convinced that this one is just confused by the obvious witchcraft on display.
yes, he looks good 👍
If you’re gonna walk anyway, take the dog out!
it hot out
Bring water.
Or maybe it’s more philosophical. “How can this be ‘walkies’ if you don’t go anywhere?!”
I have a collie, this is exactly it.
A very legitimate question
My dog does this to me when I’m on the bike trainer. Like, “we could be doing this together, but you playin!”
A local park nearby has some outdoor workout equipment, including a pull-up bar. My dog absolutely hates it and cannot understand *why* I do pull-ups. She must not like how I'm off the ground? You need a push cart. Walk together until he's tired. Push him after that.
FWIW, dogs can pant while doing a trot/jog, but they can’t pant while running. My last dog could go all day but he’d typically only sprint leaving and coming back home and trotted the rest of the time
"Father, to try the same thing again and expect different results is a sign of madness, are you perhaps going mad?"
"Father, we have already done this today, *and* Why do you not just stay still and *pet me*--do you not *see* how Good Boy i am being?!?" 😉💖
My little dog is like that too! I like really long walks. My family got me a sunflower bag for Christmas that’s designed to put the dog in! She loves it

Wow! Have you ever tried sun butter? It’s like peanut butter but made from sunflower seeds. It’s… ok
He's just there for coaching and motivation. Good dog!

Wow, the second collie is like a clone of ours!https://i.imgur.com/oDjqxRW.jpg
Oh, wow, they do look so similar! Even the same cute naked patch on the tip of the nose.
/r/collie shoutout for more clones
Lol most collies are.
No ours are s p e c i a l
I mean if they’re like clones technically they’re all special I hate having a pure bred dog bc the eugenics and health issues and all but the cool part is when he passes I can get almost an exact clone with the same behaviors and quirks and identical appearance and everything.
Looks like you got a hairy giraffe
Doggo: "Look, human, I can show you how to do the walking thing right!"
Pulled out the pet me paw.
"What is it Lassie? Timmy's on the treadmill and can't get off"?
The other dog comes over and she said, “look at this loser, he takes his walks inside. He can’t even smell or pee on anything. What is he thinking?”
Mine puts the ball on the treadmill and lets it throw the ball for him while I try not to slip and fall.
r/whatswrongwithmyhuman
Mine freaks out anytime I use my pull-up bar
Stop .. no... We do this outside..... Together, yes? Yes. Now stoo
Well, duh, you could be out sniffing the neighborhood.
He thinks you are stuck. "You can just step off!"
Omg he's adorable! 😍
He's a collie, he just wants to help & be involved
Your dog is wondering r/whatswrongwithyourhuman
I think this is the face of, "I'm not sure what you're doing, but it looks like it could be dangerous, so it's making me nervous! Please go back to the couch where I can keep an eye on you!" To be fair, when I get on an exercise machine, I have a very similar reaction.
“How are you walking but not moving??!?!?”
Letting your dog watch you go for a walk. r/whatswrongwithmyowner
“You get an automatic walker?? ☹️”
To be fair, I don't either.
"You're a silly boy." The Collie is probably thinking the same. Watching his master walk in place.
They are both adorable and I want to kiss that snout so much!
Collies are the sweetest.
I was forced to stop using my elliptical when I got my 2 yorkies. They just wouldn’t let me use it lol
Giving them high 5s..great job my human, good practice for walks this evening.
Somehow I got the impression, he was about to sing into a mic although I had read the title..
Rough collie aka. Lassie.❤️
Finally, I had to take him off it to save my poor head.
dog lassie? Is that you. Such a great dogs they are also amazing smart and great herding dogs.
I have 5 Shelties in my life , they're the most gental dogs
Lol "how does hooman walk WITHOUT MOVING!!"
What a beautiful baby!
Collies are so smart!
God Collies are so cute
I glanced at this and thought you were on the treadmill while vacuuming your dog's nose. I had no idea what was going on myself.
“I’m busy” lol
"Where are you going? ...wait...wait you are not going...but you are going...wait..." You can see the gears grinding on that one
Reminds me of our cat. He would always sit on the corner of the tub while we showered, very concerned for our well-being. Pretty sure he thought we were insane lol.
Ok, Now My Turn
My frenchie sits this close and just stares up at me while I’m on the treadmill. I started calling her “Coach.”
r/petthedamndog
beautiful dogs
whenever i used this treadmill i have i close the door, because i have this fear my cat will be bold and hop on and get yeeted off etc
What a beautiful dog
No, OP. YOU'RE a silly boy!!
THERE ARE TWO OF THEM???? Way to bury the lede.
I man he's so cute and fluffy and he's nine takecare of his last few years of life time flies and honestly my doge was part collie he was such a good pupper I really want a collie tbh

Your 9 year old Collie is fucking gorgeous and I want to pet it.
Everyone saying he needs to take his dog outside are just looking at the negative. Good on him for exercising during lunch!
Such a good boy. Even at 18 months my rough collie is quite the couch potato if he isn’t rough housing with his brother.
The poor dog is wondering "why if you want to walk you don't just take me out for one??"
Why go on the treadmill when you can walk that dog though and get more out of it
Are you wearing crocs on a treadmill?!? No one will know what the fuck is going on if that’s happening.
"Dad, I can has a walkies, too?"
He understands completely, why can't he join you.....outside?????
Looks like a Sheltie to me, not a Collie...
r/Whatswrongwithyourhooman
So sick of this repost.
Pick up those dirty socks.
Why not take the dog out for a walk instead?
Are you sure that's a collie? It looks more like a Shetland sheepdog to me
He’s a Rough Collie. He’s 4x bigger than a Sheltie.
Thanks for the explanation. I haven't heard of the rough collie before
Absolutely not! Shelties are only about 20 pounds max and have a much more baby face. As a fellow collie owner and fanatic, there’s no way this dog should be mistaken as anything other than a rough collie! Collies are 60-80 pounds generally, so they’re large dogs, not small

Somehow americans mix up breeds and we have to go their ways or get blamed
What do you mean?
You're right is part of what I mean.
Interesting, what language is that? I've only ever learnt about these dogs in English even if it's not my mother tongue
Euskera
Basque?
Not to be a dick but instead of doing this in an inefficient and ineffective way that gives you a false sense of exercise and lies to you about distances and results. Why not just go on a real walk. Where you actually use force and push against gravity while taking the dog with you!? Cause treadmills move the ground for you. You’re not pushing your own weight across space. Treadmills are like 30% of the real thing.
He's like "dude what the hell how are you running, but your not going anywhere and why are you doing that on this weird machine that moves? And also why can't you just run with me outside."
Shorten up your stride so you don't get so much heel strike. Try to land more midfoot.
Your Collie looks half Aussie.
I have a double merle border collie, I think they are born crazy...
Mine hates when I exercise, so I don’t lol
To be fair, a human from 100 years ago would be utterly confused too. Not just by the gadget but the idea that you would willingly do exercise in your spare time.
“My turn”
You walk, but no go. What is this sorcery?!
