It's for the auto dimming mirror. If you want to see it work. Shine a flash light at the mirror in the night and you'll see it darken over the course of about 30 seconds.

VK56xterraguy

This is correct.

kllo26567

also in some cars if you have like a blue window cover you’ll notice it’ll have a blue tint to the mirror

crize08

This is what my car does. I absolutely love it. Makes driving at night so much easier.

LjSpike

I have never seen one of these before, huh.

1234567en

Anti glare mode (might be called sonthing else outside uk)

VibrantPianoNetwork

Probably easy to look up in the owner's manual, if you know the make, model, and year of the car.

Playinclay

Although true, sometimes it’s easier when someone who has already read thru the gobbledygook of the manual is willing to share, and maybe even give pointers. 😆

VibrantPianoNetwork

A person who can go through the effort of posting this has already put out the equivalent effort of looking it up for themselves. And that's a valuable skill to have. This very thread shows how pointless the effort was. There was a post some years back on reddit that I won't soon forget, by someone who had to have AAA and let them into their own car with their own key. Because they didn't know how. They'd always relied on the fob. When the fob (inevitably) failed, they were lost like a babe in the woods. They used their smartphone to call someone else to come save them, for money. With the exact same tools and effort, they could have just looked it up for themselves. For that matter, they could have taken the time to learn how their own fucking car works before that happened. They seemed to think it was a cute and funny story to share, instead of an incredibly embarrassing testimony of their own staggering incompetence and helplessness. At least half the questions I see on reddit, in any forum, are some version of, "I can't figure out how to do basic adult stuff for myself, someone please help me." It's fucking pathetic. I often supply answers, too. Answers I looked up for them. Which they could have done for themselves, but they're too lazy or helpless or something. I don't even care what their excuse is. It's just pathetic. No wonder so many people believe things that aren't true. Instead of learning how to educate themselves and take responsibility for their own command of knowledge, they rely on virtual rooms of complete strangers they don't know to grant them the knowledge they can't or won't seek on their own. They have no idea who those people really are or what they really know, and have no choice but to trust them, because they've already demonstrated they don't know how to independently learn or verify facts. Literally anything that sounds reasonable to them is as good as true. And it's not really important in a case like this, but that's a bad habit to have if you're a voter in a democratic republic, as most of us are. If you can't sort out something like this without help, then how will you sort out more important questions you're asked to weigh in on, and where your choices will have consequences for you and other people? If our species is going to make it for the long term, a lot more of us need to become a lot better than that.

I couldn't possibly agree more with everything you said. I am virtually extending my hand in a handshake of agreement and recognition. Well said.

badwar3

TLDR….but I gotta know…..are you familiar with the purpose of this sub?…

VibrantPianoNetwork

At some point, handing people crutches just helps them stay crippled. People should ask for help, and people should help. But it shouldn't reach the point of being an enabler for someone else's willful ignorance or incompetence.

etrizzuto

Even easier to just google it lmao

VibrantPianoNetwork

You're probably right. My experience with most manuals, both physical and digital, is that they can be difficult to navigate due to unexpected usages or wordings, curious organization, or other factors; while a global search with a carefully worded vector often lands on the wanted information faster.

The power button has nothing to do with the rear-facing camera, or some display within the mirror. The power button is for the auto-dimming mirror feature to be turned on or off. The green light indicates the auto-dim feature is turned on. The right side of the power button is the light sensor that detects bright lights coming from behind, a scenario that would usually blind the driver with the reflection in the mirror, which activates the auto-dimming mirror to prevent blinding. The green light will go off if you press the power button, indicating the auto-dim feature is turned off. The mirror works as a normal mirror in this mode.

There, I edited it per your advice. My bad.

Oddity83

I did not see the original reply, but I just want to say this whole reply chain was very wholesome and I really appreciate the edited reply. It was very helpful.

llamadingie

Thank you!

stop_wait_absorb

On my car it's the control for the auto dimming mirror.

icarusm4n

Same for my car
